storms out there across the areas. >> this is the way it's -- there are a few warnings in effect right now, this one for morgan and berkeley county. this storm has just developed over the last half hour or so. >> this is just to the north and west of frederick, then also around winchester, win chesters including fred ricks, chenin dougha and warning, all under a warning. this storm did have a storm warning with it. that storm is making its way into the open waters, eventually over towards the eastern shore.

that one not severe right now, but shouldn't be surprised to see it continue to strengthen. heat has also been a factor today. we got up to 96 today. everybody is going to cool off, but we're not quite done with those storms question. that watch in effect until 8:00. breaking news where several children were injured when an suv ran through their front yard here. it happens along 57th place in riverdale. this picture from chopper 4. authorities tell us the suv cut across the front yard of this house where the kids were playing. all were taken to a hospital, two of them with minor injuries. no word yet on the other four. the vehicle came to a rest against the second home. no details on why the driver left the road.

three years ago nine people were kid. we're in northeast washington with more on today's tribute. >> eye standing on the new hampshire avenue bridge. right underneath are the metro tracks where that tragedy unfolded 3 years ago today. this plaque contains the names of all the victims. it says in part they will always be remembered. a bronze plaque containing the names of nine people who lost their lives in metro's deadliest crash three years ago was unveiled today on the bridge overlooking the tracks where the tragedy unfolded june 22nd, 2009. >> we will forever remember what happened here. we will remember the fallen and find joy in their lives 689

second question. all the questions so far have focused on third-party winces. a man pleads guilty in a terror plot to blow up the u.s. capitol. it follows his ace rest in february, when he arrived wearing what he thought was a suicide bombing vest. >> 28-year-old amin al khalifi, an illegal immigrant from morocco grew more intent to strike a blow from within over the months between december of 2011 and february of this year. his tarts grew larger, tools more deadly. at first he wanted to blow up a synagogue, then a restaurant, then eventually he decided upon his final targets. >> he selected the targets and

devised the means and methods to carry out what he hoped would be the first-ever suicide mission in the united states directed at the u.s. capitol. >> khalifi believed he had founded similarlily minded com patriots but he was actually in league with fbi agents in an elaborate sting operations. beginning last september, he began meeting at other locations in and around a d.c. area. they tested weapons and explosives action scouted a plan to infliction the most damage. >> he wanted to bring the building down, if he could. the weapons and explosives he wear were all inopera tiff. the trap was sprung. >> i mean, al khalifi was a homegrown violent extremist, who

today. that heat index approaching 100 a bit earlier, but now we're talking about the storms just off to the west for most of us. right now you can see it around the washington area, a few light showers down through the south. in through portions around fredericksburg, also into southern maryland, we're watching storms there. these are where we have the severe storms, including this storm towards berkeley county, right around martins burg, just north, also in through washington county, this goes under 5:30. another warning is in frederick county until 5:30. a blot of lightning with this. you can see where these are just east of boone borrow, very heavy rain along route 15, back to the west. right along i-81 here, if you live in haguers ton, this storm is moving your way. yet another storm just to the south and west, that one not severe right now, but will most likely bring areas of martins

burg pretty good rain. another severe thunderstorm warning in effect for steven city. this is the storm here over steven city that's produces very heavy rainfall as well as winds gusting upyards of 50 miles an hour. this storm will move through winchester over the next, say, 20 minutes or so, then it's off toward the millwood region. be ready, this will move along route 7. if you live in louden county, these storms of not very far off. this is all part of a very large system making it's way in. look at the thunderstorm watching from new york all the way down, new jersey, philadelphia, delaware, down through virginia. all with watches throughout the

and a new severe thunderstorm warning for southern portions of st. mary's county. and calvert county. the biggers storm in through frederick county, you can see it around the thurlment area, other severe warnings have been dropped now. just thunderstorms there with a lot of rain around i-81, a lot of lightning, too. this thunderstorm does not have a severe thunderstorm warning associated with it now, but i wouldn't be surprised to see a new one for frederick county and clark county, and right along i-81. this is the new severe thunderstorm warnings, that inclusion leonardtown, lexington parks, leonard estates just outside that warning once again,

against a second home. no details yet on why the driver left the room. the alexandria man accused in a terror plot to blow up the u.s. capitol has pleaded guilty. amin al khalifi was arrested while wearing what he thought was a suicide bombing vest. a spencele vannia county man is in jail. >> as julie carey reports now, the victim was an acquaintance of the suspect through their church. >> reporter: they called him brother ed where he was treasurer of the men ace group and mentored teenage boys, now 61yards edward zatoly is accused of molesting a 14-year-old from the congregation. investigators say the other night he invited the victim and his brother to his home for a

sleepover. then while the younger boy slept on the couch, zatoly allegedly brought the 14-year-old into his bedroom. >> once into the bedroom he got into the bed naked with the 14-year-old victim. asked the victim to give him massage, and later for sectionium favors. >> the next day the teenage boy immediately told his parents what happened at brother ed's home. they contacted the sheriff's department. a sheriff's department spokesman said he turned himself in even as investigators were questioning the accuser. investigators say he confirmed the teen's accusations and told investigators about earlier incidents years ago. >> he had done this in the past, years ago in the military and overseas. >> reporter: the pastor of the church tells news4 he's totally shocked by the charges, pastor norman gallimore said he doesn't yet know how to break the news

to the congregation. more than a decade after a murder of an upper marlboro man a killer is sentenced. billy joe simon of district heights got life plus 20 years for shooting michael neal as he laid in bed next to his fiancee. in a bassinet was thain 1-month-old child. that are 12-year-old daughter was also in the house. the case went cold from a decade until dna from another crime linked simon to the murder. >> we are very satisfied we have removed from our community not only a convicted drug felon, but who is now also a convicted murderer. >> authorities say robbery was the motive. after a cheating scandal rocked the d.c. public school system, a new investigates shows some improvement. the office of the state superintendent looked at the way d.c. public schools and charter schools administered the so-called comprehensive

assessment system or c.a.s. tests last year. they evaluate how -- of the 262 schools audited, only three showed critical issues. those issues included things such as wrong answers changed to right once, improper test documentation, and the use of cell phones during testing. the city of st. pete ellers burg florida is saying thank you to a tourist from virginia. he helped in not one, but two water rescues. his name is gus hertz. last wednesday he helped pulled a driver from a partially submerged car. the very next day while out fishing, he saw an ultra-light plane go down. all the victims survived. he says he's no hero. i think anybody else would do it. i really don't think that anyone else wouldn't do. it seems scary. when you're in the situation, you just do what you've got to

hello, everybody. another severe thunderstorm warn, this one for clark county as well as jefferson county. you can see where this storm is just to the east of winchester, and really a lot of lightning with this storm right over i-81.

this is still right around the millford area and arc clark county. so watch out for this storm. it will eventually make its way through jefferson county. one against severe thunderstorm warning in this area until 6:15, this storm a very strong storm. check heavy winds maybe even 60 miles an hour. we'll keep you updated here on nbc4. take a look at this folks. special olympics virginia raised thousands with an event. 50 people took part in this two-day challenge, each strapped on a harness, and rappelled from the roof of the hotel, down 15 stories, 250 feet to the ground. money raised gone to special olympic athletes who will the

finally some relief. >> storm4 chief meteorologist doug kammerer is tracking severe weather. >> anytime we hit a record this time of year, we're talking about temperatures in the upper 90s to near 100. you need something strong to come in to break that heat, and with this, well, it's a frontal boundary, a cold front is coming in, it's a strong one and there are severe thunderstorms associated with it. you can see this one around frederick county just to the north and west of baltimore. another warning st. mary's county, extreme southern portions of calvert county and back to the west, this is the

one that's being a line now, extreme eastern portions of frederick county, including winchester, clark county, western louden county. a bit of a tour here and we'll show you where these are. right around middle way, around 1:15 in, and around shepardtown. this storm here weighing its way south and east, cabletown, are definitely in the mix. berryville starting to see the heavy rain. you can see the lightning and the thunder, a ton of lightning with this. winchester starting to get out of it right now, but also around the millville area, this storm moving along rule 7. it will be in through western louden county coming in in about the next hour to half an hour, down to the south as the line continuing to build around the strasburg area, about the next half hour, too. if you're in the way of that line, you need to stay indoors.

then ear looking at this one here. calvert county, watch out for this, this is right around the pauxant river into the chesapeake bay, and we have a lot of things loon the frontal boundary. this boundary making its way off to the east. it will cool down these temperatures. say good-bye to the 90s, say hello to the 80s. and then we get really nice, temperatures in the low 80s next week. >> that's more like it, doug. thank you. well the video that appalled many of us. middle school students taunting an elderly school bus monitor. some of the bullies are saying they're sorry. nbc's craig melvin is in rochester, new york, with details.

[ bleep ] and go through you [ bleep ]. >> reporter: more than 2 million have watched the 13-year-olds from greece, new york, bully their 68-year-old bus monitor. three of the four boys and their parents are apologizing. in statements released through police, one student writing -- i am so sorry for the way i treated you. when i saw the video, i was disgusted and could not believe i did that. i will never treat anyone this way again. a parent says, quote, i would like it if he dao do some work for you or help you in some way. i am embarrassed, angry and sad about the awful way he treated you. the same video that's triggered so much has sparked nearly as much compass and generosity. >> i saw what those kids did to you, it nearly had me in tears.

a peanut allergy? >> we checked with the centers for disease control to get this answer. it says hand sanitizers are able to kill many times of germs. however, they don't work very well against morse allergy gens. the cdc says that since allergy gens aren't living germs, the sanitizer can't really kill them. the safest bet is to wash your hands with soap and water. if a hand sanitizer is your only option, use one that's at least 60% alcohol to clean your hands. >> that's why i'm always hanging out near liz's desk. >> it's because it smells like lemons or something, lavender, i don't know. our final question has to do with the american flag since the fourth of july is around the corner. what should viewers keep in mind. >> if up to display the flag, the code says don't use it as a decoration, also never drape the flag on furniture or a platform.

some recent high school graduates in arlington are in big trouble tonight after police caught them drinking on the school's roof. news4's melissa mollet was there for the takedown. >> reporter: it was the beginning of the end when school security guards spotted the teens on top of the building early this morning. this is how they got up there,

by climbing this yellow pipe that snakes around the school and up onto the roof. investigators say the former students who just graduated on wednesday were drinking beer up there. by the time please arrived, they had come down and were running. police caught seven of them. the rooftop celebration turned into this, the students sitting in cuffs answering their questions with their black backpacks open nearby. >> that's what they yield to take the alcohol onto the rooftop. that's what was in the back packs. >> buffett students who ran fought with officers. they could all face charges of trespassing, unlawful entry for going up on the roof. nothing was vandalized. what do you make of all this? >> senior-itis? >> reporter: bad case of it? >> well deserved case of it, no
