the all-new cadillac xts has arrived, and it's bringing the future forward. it looked like a mib i tornado, it looked like a tornado or hurricane came through. >> people in prince georges county left pick up the pieces a day after severe thunderstorms leave their community in shambles. tonight we've learned that the worst of the damage was caused by a microburst. good evening, i'm jim rosenfield. let's get right to the aftermath of last night's storms. more than 7,000 people still don't have power, most of those outages in prince george's county. pepco is working as fast as possible to get the lights back on and some may not have power

for a few more days. darcy spencer has a look at how they're coping. darcy? >> reporter: at the height of the storm pepco had 45,000 outages. they're made progress, but obviously it will take some time. take a look down here. this is newton street in bladensburg and this was the hardest hit area, and there is debris all over the streets and pepco crews are doing all they can. if you come back over this way, just to give you an idea of the sheer fort of the winds, this white thing is the roof of a nearby apartment building that flew about 200 yards and landed here on an suv. so they have a lot of work to do. a lot of these lines are tangled up and we are told it could be sunday night into monday morning before they get the power back on. pepco officials say they're working 24 hours a day to get the power restored and they have their workers as well as contract workers and other

utility companies working on this and because of the sheer magnitude of this problem it will take everybody's time to get the power back on. >> our customers are our number one focus, we aim to restore the power, we want to rely on enhancement, customer service and we will continue to work for 24 hours and restore that power. in restoring the power and restoring the trust, do you think people will work until sunday and monday? >> i hope so. we will have everyone working until we're up and running. >> reporter: you see one of the utility crews working, and they've had so much devastation with the trees falling into the power lines and you can see they're all over the street and all over vehicles in this neighborhood. there is quite a bit of damage here affecting numerous multi-family dwellings in this area, apartment buildings as well as condominiums and pepco

officials are doing what they can, as quickly as they can and they have it keep safety in mind of their workers, again, 24 hours a day until the job is done. reporting live from bladensburg, darcy spencer -- >> we want to stay in bladensburg because it was so heavily damaged. todaya authorities confirmed it was caused by a microburst, a downdraft capable of providing strong winds and significant damage. dozens of homes between newton street and 52nd street lost their homes. derek ward has more. >> it was clear even at night that the bladensburg neighborhood were hard hit. the red spot marks buildings where the roofs were torn off and devastation and there are the stories of those who were caught up at the height of the high winds. >> as i was trying to come out of the building i couldn't open the door. the wind was coming so strong

and i still had my windows open. >> she says it was a neighbor that finally helped her open the door from the outside despite his own problems. >> he tried to open the door and the roof fell on him and he had a concussion. >> high winds came in quickly, downing trees and power lines all along newton street. >> i was ready for it to come and then i seen the roof over there. >> reporter: crews brought out heavy equipment and they cleared newton street early on, but the rest of the cleanup could tack a while longer. so what could have possibly caused all of this damage? >> the reports we're getting from the national weather service which is some type of microburst that came through here yesterday evening. >> as many as 600 people were displaced and they were put up at nearby shelters and schools. >> we are coordinating with the red cross. they've already been in there. the health department and the acting health officers as well as the social services, so weir really working to make sure that the residents are taken care of. >> the fire department will go

through the buildings that are unfit for habitation and they'll close down and those that simply don't have power we'll put a sticker on it and we'll prefer to go to a shelter. >> it is bad. it is bad. i haven't seen anything like this, since the last natural disaster we had in the county. >> in bladensburg, derek ward, news 4. >> people that were forced out of their home have moved to a temporary shelter at bladensburg high school. we are told 70 people are staying there. for more information you can call the emergency operation center. the number on the screen is 301-583-2230. what a difference a day makes. the severe weather moved out and left behind a nice weekend for those not dealing with cleanup. meteorologist chuck bell has more from storm center 4. >> unfortunately for folks without air-conditioning it was another 90-plus degree day.

the man pushed her into the backseat and sexually assaulted her. police are asking bopeople to wk in groups late at night. june lim was robbed in an apparent robbery. police believe someone had been watching lim and knew her routine. customers held a prayer vigil as her family gave away food and drinks to those who attended. d.c. police are trying to find out what led to a deadly shooting overnight in northwest. it happened before 2:00 this morning. the victim, antoine baits was found shot and wounded and he died later at the hospital and so far no arrests. >> he had a front row seat for the jerry sandusky trial. now one of the viewers is talking about the verdict that sent the coach to prison. how a priest made history in

one of the jurors in the jerry sandusky trial is speaking out about the guilty verdicts. late last night a jury found the coach guilty of 45 counts of child sexual abuse. he was handcuffed and taken to jail until he remains until

sentencing in 90 days. joshua harper was on the jury and he spoke on the "today" show, and said all of the jurors were on the same page when it came down to sandusky's fate. >> we went over it systematically making sure that we believed the testimony that we saw, corroboration between the testimonies and that they were credible and we just did that for every single victim. >> sandusky's attorney says his client is now on suicide watch and being kept away from other inmates. several investigations into the abuse and an alleged cover-up at penn state remained open and more charges could be filed. support is still rolling in for karen klein, she's the school bus monitor from upstate new york who was taunted mercilessly by kids on the school bus. as of today donations for her top $600,000 and a rally was held in her honor. some of the students have since

alexandria have been closed since last night. all traffic between van duren street and telegraph road will use one local lane. you can take 395 to the southeast-southwest freeway or the mixing bowl. this construction may be back next weekend, as well. crews got a late start because the companies that supplied asphalt lost power because of last night's storm. local anglican priests became part of catholic history today. they're part of the first national class of the chair of st. peter. it was created earlier this year for anglican clergy seeking to become priests. three exist in the world, one here in the u.s. and also the united kingdom as well as australia. >> just about a month away from the start of the summer olympics in london and part of the fun made a stop in d.c. today.

was unfortunate because it was another toasty warm day, but oh, what a difference the day has made and the real measure of moisture in the atmosphere and they've been tumbling all day long and we had the dew point up near 70 degrees and as a result, our relative humidities have really plummeted. so if you're in the shade and not working to clear debris out of the yard and able to relax a little bit and it's a beautiful afternoon to be outside. it's still toasty warm, though, 89 at national airport and the relative humidity, 26%. yesterday that was in the 60% range at this time of the day and that's a huge turnaround and courtesy of the north breeze averaging 13 miles per hour. a real pleasant evening coming up. temperatures right now, mid to upper 80s in most looks and we didn't spend that long above 90 degrees and battle of the beltways continues and the nationals and the orioles, first

pitch in camden yard and ballot bore and 84 degrees and a good weather for baseball. on the whole, a big story, less humid outside for today. that will stick around for the remainder of the overnight hours and the lower humidity will allow a clear sky overnight tonight and another warm day tomorrow, but the lower humidity won't feel too bad. the trough of low pressure will generate showers in the mountains of west virginia tomorrow. everybody has a chance of seeing passing showers as the weather front comes in monday morning and behind that a real break from the heat that will carry us through the middle of the week. not much showing up on the radar and in the gulf of mexico, heavy rain today. and tropical storm debby is born. the track for now from the national hurricane center will take us westbound near the texas coast, but all need to watch this carefully and there's a great deal of uncertainty with where the storm will be going. if you're going down to our beaches, great weather. sunday, monday, tuesday. a chance of rain for the beaches

on monday, but other than that it will be awfully nice. what about around town? clearing skies and a bit cooler by morning and mildest by the bay around 70 and back into the upper 50s and low 60s and another beautiful day. plenty of sunshine and that's not going to bother most of us for tomorrow and the best chance for everybody to get rain will be monday probably in the first half of the day and tuesday, wednesday, thursday look fantastic and if you love industrial strength heat and humidity, not so much. not so much. coming up in sport, the caps

the weather is heating up out there and so is the battle of the beltway. last night was the pitching between the nates and zimmerman. he was backed up with some timely hits and the stingy os defense. let's go to camden yard. this one always brings out some conflicted friendships. we pick it up in the top of the second, and one round to second and cole hamlin, sits out espinoza. j.j. hardy punches one to left. nick johnson scores what would become the game-winning run.

the nats will get a shot in the seventh and jesus flores gets a chunk and hearty robs in with his glove in the end and first his offense and now what it will do, showing ups on that one and the nats leave two on. in the end, hamilton improved the 5 and 0 lifetime against the nats and os win 2-1 and mets' manager, davey johnsness on was quick to admit that hamel was just in one of those zones. >> he had to get everything working and he had a low pitch, and i didn't you had it. >> hamel was an unbelievable pitcher. i think he's an ace and one of the best we've seen this year. we have three quaility pitches and 96 mile an hour sinker. he did a great job tonight.
