tonight it's burning through the air force academy's campus. good afternoon, everything. welcome. >> that wildfire doubled in size overnight and now covers more than 24 square miles. >> but tonight the flames are still too intense to say just how much damage has been done. nbc's gina kim reports from colorado springs. >> reporter: it is being described as a fire of epic proportion. one of the several fires burning out of control in colorado, the waldo canyon fire near colorado springs doubled in size overnight. >> this event that's going on is certainly unprecedented. >> the numbers are staggers. more than 30,000 people have been forced to evacuate. >> this is an active fire, not even remotely close to being contained. >> reporter: dozens of homes are reduced to rubble. >> we have a lot of structures lost. we're hoping that area had been evacuated earlier. there were some people who refur

refused to evacuate. we hope they did get out. >> reporter: for those who did get out, the sadness is overwhelming. >> it's much -- we're okay. >> reporter: 6 a-mile-per-hour wind gusts tuesday pushed the inferno beyond breaks. they're battling have the wildfire from the ground and the air. the air force academy evacuated thousands from its campus. colorado springs isn't the only major city being threatened in colorado. the hills around boulder are also ablaze. in a state that's all too familiar with wildfires, this year is being called the worth fire season in colorado history. in colorado springs, gina kim, nbc news. the recommend nands of debby have moved offshore into the atlantic. the tropical storm dumped mohr than 2 feet of rain on much of florida, leaving severe flooding in its wake. forecasters warn it could still pose a risk.

coastal areas could be flooded by the storm surge during high tide. tens of thousands remain without power. debby has been downgraded to a tropical desuppression. pepco says it's working to restore power. pepco tells us workers are getting better training and doing more preventive main fans. but emergency management agencies and the red coals say customers should also prepare. they suggests an emergency kit of items you might need in case you're without resources and a well-rehearsed plan. the thing to plan for the next couple days -- the heat. the national weather service has issued an excessive heat watch for friday. >> doug kammerer joins us with the sizzling details. we're talking sizzling. >> we really are. we just went through a heat wave where we reached around 100 degrees. this one will be worse. this event, an excessive heat watch in effect.

anytime you see a watch or warning, that means the heat index could be near 110. heat advisory is between 100 to 105. this height indense with a watch in effect for the day on friday. right now it's a watch, not quite a warning. if it stays like this we could see an excessive heat warning. where it is along the i-95 corridor, very hot 2e78s. we are going for highs near 100 degrees across the region friday, saturday and sunday. out there right now, 89 degrees with winds out of the northwest at 18 miles an hour. that's a comfortable 89. we can deal with this humidity only 29%, no humidity out there. the heat index the exact same temperature as you're seeing outside. 82 in winchester, 86 in leesburg. we're looking at a very nice afternoon tonight, but the heat starts to move in tomorrow. i'll let you know how fast it moves in, how hot we get and how long we stay there. >> we're following a developing story.

the fda has approved the first prescription weight-loss pill in more than a decade. arena pharmaceuticals says belviq can help people lose 3% of the body weight. it can be taken by that have at least one medical complication. the fda rejebbed the application in 2010 because of concerns about tumors that developed in animals during testing. after getting additional data, the fda now says there is little rusk of tumors in people. a developing story from northwest d.c., where police are looking for a suspect after a noontime stabbing on a metro bus. the victim is a 17-year-old boy. witnesses say the victim, the teen, was stabbed during an argument on that bus. as it traveled right here through the heart of the george washington university campus. the attacker fled after the stabbing. that attack was captured on bus surveillance video. pat collins talked to the victim, and we'll have a live report here at 5:00 tonight. one of the golf's premier

street journal"port has them locked in a race. in may, mr. obama held a four-point lead, but in 12 major battleground states, the president stretches his lead to eight points, with 50% of likely voters backing him, compared to 42% for romney. still more people disapprove than approve of his overall performance, 48% to 47%, but mitt romney's unfavorability rating rose last month to tie his all-time high of 39%. well, if you're a college student or the parents of one, you're likely aware that a major student loan deadline is looming. on monday, interest rates on federal loans are set to double to 6.4%. it looks as if congress and the white house are close to a deal to keep the increase from happening. but as steve handlesman reports now, it's not a done deal. >> reporter: it would be another

"motown the musical" will show him as a young songwriter who got his start with a loan from his family. he became the music legend that we all know. gordy is writing the script, also serving as producer. the show is set to open next fringe. the mccartney clan was out in force monday night in london. they attended the premiere of her husband's new film "comes a bright day." there was sibling support, too. mccartney's oldest sister, still telea was else there along with his son james. the film hits british theaters next month. a scary situation for rihanna. >> she was one of 300 people evacuated from a swanky london hotel after a fire broke out early this morning. the blaze began in an elevator shaft on the seventh floor. she tweeted news of the fire, telling her 21 million followers that she had been roaming the

we'll see clouds on the increase for the next few hours, but they were be through here by 11:00, 12:00 tonight. we need to talk about the heat. out towards the west here, we have some big-time numbers. look at these numbers 91 in denver after two days in a row of 105. 106 in springfield, goodland at 106. hill city kansas at 114. that's not the heat index, that's the actual temperature. yes, that hot area will be making its way. many areas across the country are expecting triple digits. and yes, right here, even in the washington area, i do think we'll hit 100 at least once. this evening, mostly clear, breezy and comfortable. enjoy the night tonight. this will probably probably be the last evening we have it just this nice, 76 to about 83.

tomorrow morning, mostly clear, a nice start. 56 to about 67 degrees, with winds out of the west. those winds shift a bit out of the southwest tomorrow, mostly sunny, becoming hot, but still not too humid. temperatures 90 to 96. that heat index should not be much of a factor tomorrow, but still we'll be in the low to middle 90s. tomorrow the heat kicks on. 99 on friday. i am going for 100 degrees on saturday. 99 on sunday, and those are not even records, folks. 30% chance of rain on sunday, could be a few showers friday, maybe even isolated showers on saturday toward the mountains, and then a better chance of showers as we head into the beginning of next week. notice all seven days from tomorrow through wednesday, at least 90 degrees or better, so this heat wave will be one we'll be talking about. i think it will be a dangerous heat wave. that's why we have that excessive heat watch for friday,

real-life angry birds tonight. >> yeah, first a haynesport, new jersey. many of the wild birds stalk the roads and go after people they encounter. >> they would chase you down the road, stuff like that. there was one that was aggressive. it didn't take much to get him to go the other way. >> lawmakers in the area are considering a feeding ban, but some residents say that won't help, because the turkeys go after the feed they give to the chickens and other small animals they raise. don't make them angry. to portland, where a crow is divebombing pedestrians walking on a bridge. victims say they hear the swoosh, and out of nowhere the crow comes at them. some thing it may be protecting a next, but others think it attacks people on white hats, on bicycle and apparently they don't like certainly hairstyles.

this time tomorrow we will not want to leave the studio. everyone will want to hibernate. >> tomorrow will be hot, going to 95, but the humidity will not be a problem. tomorrow should be okay. a lot of people are heading out to the national. i think i'm going to go at least early in the day. that should be okay. but it's friday, saturday and sunday, if you have plans to go out to the national, you really want to make sure you take a lot of water with you, and stay away from that alcohol. i know a lot of people out there will be drinking just a little bit, but it will be hot out there. i feel sorry for tiger woods and the guys out there, because the heat will be on. out there right now, the heat is on a little bit, at least from where it was yesterday. right now we're sitting at 89, but this is 9 numbers. a very comfortable 49, winds

gusting upwards of 39. so that is a nice, cool wind. too. our friends at college park are at 88. satellite and radar showing clear skies earlier, now we're seeing some clouds build in and increasing clouds throughout the rest of the evening, but those clouds are going to give away by later on tonight, so don't worry too much about the clouds. warm temperatures today with some sunshine. watch what happens tomorrow. the hot air moves in here. we are going to get very hot across the ohio river valley, and the south tomorrow, but it's not really tomorrow. again the heat and humidity really come in on friday, could be a chance for some showers. that would help at least locally to downplay some of that heat, but i think everybody will be close to that 100 degree mark.

tomorrow, however, everybody into the 90s. going for a high of 95 in d.c., 92 towards cambridge. on friday, this is the day that we're watching for the excessive heat. excessive heat watch in effect. when we talk about excessive height here, we're talking about a heat index near 110 degrees. that means it's possible tomorrow that means it's probable, and i think it will be very close to that, maybe 105 to 110. can you escape the heat here? i think on friday, maybe a little bit. temperature around 92, with humidity down toward ocean city. 96, though, on saturday, hot and humid, 95 on sunday, the best place to be will be in the water, with that water temperature of 73 degrees. 95 tomorrow, there's that 95 on friday, and the 100 degree temperature on saturday. the report on saturday is 101.
