wildfires in the state burning out of control. gina kim has the latest. >> reporter: good evening, jim. we have six fires here in colorado, but we have 29 large fires burning throughout the western states. what's happening behind me? one, wight a lot selfwinds that have just picked up and then we're also supposed to be getting a briefs with fire officials. they're going to update us, but as of right now, we only have 5% containment on this large wildfire. >> we have several fires burning out of the control, it doubled in size overnight. >> certainly it's unprecedented.

more than 30,000 people have been forced to evacuate. >> in one of the northern most subdivisions, dozens of hose are redu reduced. >> there were some people that refused to evacuate. >> the sadness of seeing their homes is overwhelming. it pushed the inferner beyond fire breaks. fire crews are battling. colorado springs isn't the only major city being threatened. the hills around boulder are also ablaze. >> in a state all too familiar, this years is being called the

hill city, kansas. 109 in goodland, and 109 in the northern portions of oklahoma. we're going to be seeing some of that heat make its way over the next couple days, and i think many parts of the country will be near or above triple-digit numbers. maybe around the washington, d.c. area. i do think we'll get close to 100. same for raleigh. it will be hot along the east coast from the mississippi river to the atlantic ocean. we'll show you the excessive heat watch that is in effect. it takes a lot for the national weather service to put out an excessive heat watch. you have to get a heat index near 110 degrees. that's what it will feel like on friday, on saturday, and on sunday, and maybe monday, at least the heat advisory monday, but we could see excessive heat warnings, so the heat will be out there, and you need to be ready for it. if you do have outdoor plans,
