good evening. >> first, to some breaking news in maryland. chopper 4 live over a roof collapse. this is a large building in hyattsville. >> well, wendy, it was about 10:00 this evening when we receive it had call about the building collapse. it's in the 1500 block at the intersection of sheriff road. this is the old safe-way warehouse, if anybody can remember that far back. it's now a business called recall which is a documents management company. from what i understand, there's just stacks and stacks and rows and rows of paper files. for whatever reason, it's unknown at this time, why the ceiling collapsed causing the walls to buckle on the sides of the building and causing several of the high stacks of the boxes to collapse. we are searching for one

employee that remains unacounted for. the problem is with the fear of the remaining part of that building possibly collapsing -- near collapse, we cannot send anybody in at this point. we did send one group in, did a very quick search and had to come back outside of the building. >> mark, do you know how the roof even collapsed? >> no, it's too early to tell. some of these buildings in this area are rather old and aged. i don't know if that has anything to do with it or not. but, at this point, we're still in the investigative phase and the rescue phase to try to attempt to locate the missing worker. it probably won't be until tomorrow that we figure out kpa exactly why this roof collapsed. >> thanks, mark. >> reporter: okay. >> you can call it extreme, excessive, oppressive, whatever you want to call it, it is going to be really hot tomorrow.

>> i think we're talking about temperatures around that century mark, around 100 degrees tomorrow and a heat index near 105, maybe even a little bit above for some of you out there. the heat advisory, really for just about everybody in our vooing avoo i viewing area. the only exception around the shene nrksz doa valley. right now, we're at 83 degrees. a dew point of 61. the dew point has really come up over the past few hours as our winds have been out of the south. that is going to increase our humidity where it stands right now. that's why we're going to be dealing with the heat. tomorrow, it's going to be the humidity that gives it to us. 96 degrees in washington, 97 in rally. recording sitly sh ining simpl here. a new record in st. louis

baeting the old record by 3 degrees. 103 in cincinnati and the hottest there is still making its way. i shoel you how hot we get tomorrow, how long it lasts and when we could see some relief in my full forecast. >> thanks, doug. this entire area is gearing up for that heat. at&t national golf tournament continues tomorrow in bethesda and through the weekend. bottles of water there now will sell for 2 instead of three. meanwhile, coaches at the tennis park say they're going to be encouraging everybody to slow down. >> the 1970s motif that will just tough it out. that's completely archaic. so we don't use that. we use a lot of good, common sense. >> several local governments will open cooling centers over the weekend. that's in addition to keeping the public pools open later. you can find information on all of this on nbcwashington.com!

that huge wild fire raging in colorado springs has now destroyed close to 350 homes. that total would make it the most destructive in state history. in the last sick days, these flames have sorched 1 scorched acres. right now, that fire is only 10% contained. and it's not just out west. closer to home, in our area, there is a growing danger in virginia near front royal, a wild fire getting worse tonight. people who live nearby are being told to prepare for the worst. and some neighborhoods in northern virginia are already smelling the smoke. >> reporter: right now, 353 acres have burned. firefighters are very concerned about the hot and dry weather expected over the next couple of days. let me move out the way and my photographer can sooem in for you. you can see the orange flames right there. there is still smoke burning, obviously. and the fire is on the mountain.

the terrain is steep, rocky and remote, making access to the fire extremely challenging. >> you can probably get is there in about three minutes. >> the fire continues to burn. jeff and anne downs live less than a mile from where it's burning. >> i'm not good. >> reporter: what about you, man? >> i'm praying. that they put the fire out. >> reporter: the fire marshal told us the folk that is live on the mountain between sherman gap and veech gap might have to evacuate. it's only 5% contained, more than 300 acres have burned. 109 firefighters are battling the blaze. it's burning in the george washington and jefferson national forest. the u.s. forest service closed four hiking trails and are trying to keep the wild fire from spreading towards homes and farms by putting in fire lines. >> i sure hope i don't have to pack up. >> this helicopter helps out

spreading water and refilling every five minutes. >> the forest service, they already said something ablt, you kn know, we'll let you know if we're going evacuate. >> reporter: the cause of this fire is under investigation. firefighters want people who have breathing problems to avoid outside as much as possible. in bentonville, news 4. >> attorney genric holder is now the first member of a cabinet to be held in contempt of congress. he called the house vote politically motivated. representatives voted 255 to 67 to censusecensure for not fast furious. more than 100 democrats boycotted the vote today. they walked out of the capital. >> today's vote is the regrettable culmination of an

care law was evident outside the courtroom. looking like a pageant at times, supporters and opponents wearing costumes. meanwhile, in virginia, the attorney general and the first state prosecutor to file a lawsuit. he says it proves that lawmakers misled the public. >> because they all wanted to be accused of voeting to raise taxes. and, in fact, what the court said today is that's exactly what they did. even while they lied to us about what they were doing. >> he said that virginia will do its best to come ply with this health care law for now. over in maryland, they're praising the supreme court's decision. lieutenant governor anthony brown said it would help the state move forward to let individuals and small businesses buy coverage through a health care exchange. that exchange will rely on

not on a list of 22 crimes that would force him to give up his pension. sandusky was an assistant coach at penn state, a state school. one lawmaker has already introduced a bill that would broaden the list of crimes that would eliminate a state worker's pension. >> it's note often that you worry that kids' pajamas are going to catch fire. but close to 230,000 pairs of a pajamas are being called for that very reason. rigo international, pa ja ma brand and ishtex did not meet the flammability standards. one incident is reported of pajamas catching fire. >> thou sansands of panels of a quilt are on display for the first time since 1996. that quilt is part of the smithsonian folk life festival.

the first panels were honored for those who died of aids or hiv. sheila jones is making one in memory of her daughter who got aids when was 15 and lived with the disease for 17 years. >> this is a family effort. i'm putting the finishing touches on one that my mother made. >> the entire aids memorial quilt includes 94,000 names. >> wow, that is a thing of beauty. >> um-hmm. >> it was interesting being outside tonight because, suddenly, you could feel the humidity around 8:30 just start sucking us in. >> that's when the wind shifted. our humidity levels went up and we had our first heat index of the afternoo noon.

there was no humidity and that meant that the heat index was exactly what it felt like out there. our average high temperature plan this time of year is now up to 87 degrees. so we are well above average. and, tomorrow, we're going to be even warmer. the record-high tomorrow is 101. the all-time record june temperature is 102. we could be close to those numbers. right now, 83 degrees. the winds out of the south at 6 miles an hour. dew point all day was in the 50s. now it is into the 60s. again, we are going to see that dew point increase during the day tomorrow. and that means our humidity will increase. 78 in martinsburg, 80 in fredericksburg. earlier in the week, we were down into the upper 50s already. so 20 degrees warmer right now in many locations than we were. just about everybody in our

entire viewing area for a heat index of 105. we saw it last week, we're going to see it tomorrow and we're going to see a couple areas get to that 100 degree number. this is something that could help keep us down. this is a little frontal boundary. if these are able to come through here and the clouds linger a little bit through tomorrow morning and it could help just a little bit. but i'm not anticipating too much from that. take a look at the numbers. 92 in philly, 96 in richmond. but just to the west, 100 in columbus, charleston and jackson. and that is the heat that is going to be moving our way. once again, all-time high record temperatures have been set all across the country and it looks like it could be moving our way. here's the warm temperatures tontd. watch how this kind of moves through our area tontd. and even tomorrow, we do have a sliegt chance of a shower or thunderstorm, any storms that develop in this kind of heat, they could turn out strong. but don't expect much. just expect the heat.

it's going to be here tomorrow. it's going to be here on saturday. belter chance of storms coming in on saturday. tomorrow morning, clear skies, warm and humt. 64 to about 75 degrees. and we might not get that low. tomorrow morning, or rather tomorrow afternoon, 96-101. the heat index near 105 tomorrow and that will be during the afternoon. as we move over the next couple of days down towards the beaches, not a whole lot of relief here. only in the 90s. 92 on friday, 96 on saturday. here's the next couple of days. a hundred tomorrow, a hen drud on saturday and it looks like all next week we will be 90 degrees or better. >> summertime. >> yeah. >> sports up next. >[ leanne ] appliance park has been here since the early 50s.

beal is athletic, physical and expected to be the ying to john wall's yang in the back court. >> john is a great point guard. he's been creating for others and creating for himself. overall, he's going to be a great player in the league and i'm really looking forward to playing next to him. >> i think the organization owners in the jim did a great job. it was tough to see where so many people wanted an opportunity to get to him. and i'm glad that we have the opportunity to pick him. and he's somebody that can make shots. you know what i mean? spread the court for you. you can't say what you're going to expected from him right away. >> and, in round two tonight, the wizards take a 6'7" guard out of the czech republic. let's hit you over to golf. the at&t national is at conventional counsel tri club this weekend. everyone spoke about how easy the course was. well, that hasn't been the case for tiger's tournament this year. a few changes to the course and,

after round 1 today, close to 70% of the field is over par. so much more difficult. future pga tour golfer, maybe, taking in the scene. it's about mid 90s on the course today. we begin on the par 5 six. and that one is good for birdie. to the par 3 ten now. billy hurley, he is a local guy from leesburg. that's the tee shot. lands three feet from the hole. he would just clean that up for birdie. hurley, two under 69 today. here's tiger on 14 putting from about 14 feet. slow roller. it's a good one. shot one over 72 and he's five strokes off the lead. the nationals and rockies game this afternoon was the exact opposite of a pitcher's stool. in fact, the pitching was terrible on both sides.

so on to the slug fest we go. nats down 10-9. and he catches some rocky mountain high. takes one deep and harper has his first homer in 16 days. we're tied at 10. going to extras now, bottom of the 11th, craig in pitching for the nats. lines one into right center. it falls in. the winning run comes home to score. that's all the rockies need. it oo es a walk off. the nats lose this one and they split the series. >> not so bad.
