right now at 6:30, the day after ferocious storms roared through last night, trees down, homes destroyed. several people dead. and as we look at live radar, some of us, some of you, could be seeing more storms tonight. good evening, everyone. i'm jim rosenfield. >> i'm erica gonzalez. delaying "nightly news" because of the destruction from last night's severe weather and potential of more storms also in the forecast for tonight. as we speak, more than a million people in our area are still without power. and it could be a week or longer before the lights are back on everywhere. >> storms being blamed for at least four deaths in our area. d.c. and virginia have declared states of emergency. maryland is following suit. >> complicating matters in

virginia, the 9191 -- 911 system is down. bring emergencies to local police and fire stations. >> water restrictions are also in place for many marylanders. wssc is telling customers in montgomery and prince george's county to limit the water he noouds use, because the storm knocked out pouber to filtration plants and other facilities. if the heat weren't unbearable enough, word more storms could roll right through parts of our area tonight. tom kierein is watching things in the weather center for us. tom, bopup thunderstorms, that's the last thing people want to hear right now. >> yeah, but unlike last night, they're not widespread and don't have any reports of any widespread wind damage, but we have some very potent thunderstorms popping up south of washington over the last, oh, about an hour, hour and a half or so. you can see the areas in orange. those are the severe thunderstorm warning areas, and i'll zoom in and show you. these are the zones being
6:32 pm
affected right now. the nearest counties are in orange and into spotsylvania county, storms moving east at about 35 miles an hour. these are the towns that are affected. these towns are -- bowling green, arcadia, spotsylvania itself. bells crossroad. granite springs. all of these are in the path of this storm that's moving east at about the 35 miles an hour. you can see these dark colors in here and this pink zone. this is the strongest storm right here. this is north of charlottesville and these are tracking just about due east. fredericksbu fredericksburg. rolling right as would spotsylvania county over the next half hour or so. expect strong, gusty wind and heavy rain briefly as they come through. this is a severe risk zone, and it includes all of virginia, all of maryland, all of west virginia. so we're not done yet. this is a sthooorm we do get sts around until midnight tonight.
