48 hours later, hundreds of thousand still without power after a fierce storm. no air conditioning or patience either. >> nobody will have their boot further up pepco's back side than i will. >> and another major problem looms, the traffic likghts. hundreds are out. tomorrow could be a nightmare commute. >> it is almost like all the jungles out there. and all the rules thrown out the window. >> good evening. it it not over yet. here is the latest where we stand after the storm. at least five people in our area are dead. more than half a million are still without power. utility cup paenz sompanies sat next weekend before all is restored. some are told to boil their water before drinking it. the big question, who is going

guard. so, you may see guardsmen out there in the morning. helping people get to work safely. reporting live from bethesda, darcy spencer, news 4. >> metro riders give yourself extra time tomorrow as well. several bus routes will be detoured because of fallen trees and power lines and some metro rail trains. they may be going at slower speeds. all metro stations are expected to open normally tomorrow. and there might be escalator outages at stations running on back up power. to help commuters tomorrow, vdot relaxing restrictions on i-66 eastbound. that means anybody heading into washington can use 66 during the morning rush hour tomorrow. tonight, hundreds of thousands of people in our region still do not have power. here are the numbers. pepco reporting more than 280,000 customers out. dominion, more than 190,000. and bge reporting more than 100,000 without air conditioning tonight. reports that more than 5,000 are

without power, novec. smeco, 6,000. utility companies are saying it could take a week to restore power to awful ill customers. and the outages have people seeking relief from the heat any way they can. when pepco says it plans to get the power back on for most customers. what's the answer, dare snerek. >> the $64,000 question. the pepco officials say by friday. on new hampshire avenue, getting the thoroughfare clear for traffic. now down there, see the tree we showed you earlier. there is an overhead pepco crew on site as well as a tree clearing crew on the other end. they have to work in concert. wires are mingled with the downed limbs. have to mack suke sure it is sa. around the edges there. looks like they will get work under way in earnest soon. they have their work cut out for

them. their goal is to get the thoroughfare open for the morning rush. there is no place like home for patricia payne, home is a honda outside the house. the car has ac, the passenger seat is the dinner table. the house doesn't have power. >> just do what i have to do. sit in the car. get cool. and then go in. >> all along new hampshire avenue, from the maryland line to petworth, power is out. and hard hit. a burning question -- >> where the trucks are. go follow where the trucks are. that's what everybody wants to know. >> i know there has been a concern that we don't see a lot of trucks out. we have been trying to restore infrastructure, without that infrastructure being in place, we can't, it doesn't make sense to continue along the way into the neighborhoods. >> reporter: those resources say pepco officials have been working on damaged substations where power is converted to levels that go to customers. out of town crews are en route

and they say they will converge on communities. according to the plan. it can't come a moment too soon. he has been living on the porch. >> you stay out here until you fall asleep. then you can lay down. just try to stayle coo. all you can do. >> across new hampshire avenue, a tree crew began the work cutting around the edges. a lot to go. this tree fell on friday. >> major are teterial. through a good part of the ward has been blocked. that's frustrating. pepco and d-dot tell me tonight or tomorrow morning. that's what we are expecting. >> what can you do? what can you do? awe up awe just have >> we have to work with what we have. >> back to new hampshire and oneida. pepco crews here now. an overhead truck out of view. they're going to got to work in earnest. as we say, they started to remove the tree. the goal ties have this artery open for the morning rush.

and, by the way, that car that you see there, there was an occupant in it when the tree went down. we are told that the female driver got out okay. she is a very lucky woman. and now the hope is that there will be very lucky commuters tomorrow when the major thoroughfare gets really busy. in northeast, derek ward, news 4. >> thank you, derek. dominion virginia power says it is working 'round-the-clock to try to restore power. we visited regional operation center in herndon today. as we learned it it not just about putting power lines back up. >> catastrophic damage interprets for us into rebuilding our infrastructure. so there are places where we have to rebuild our entire area before we can get the lights back on to customers. >> dominion is calling uncrews from other states to help with power restoration. fairfax county residents still need to boil their drinking and cooking walter to night to avoid getting sick. falls church water utility says boil water advisory in effect for customers in tysons corner,

vienna, and dunn loring, it led to a drop in water pressure that may have let bacteria into some of the pipes. the advisory will be lifted tomorrow night when the water supply will be tested. water restrictions lifted for montgomery and prince george's county. the washington sanitary commission says anyone who saw changes in water pressure or color after the storms should flush the waupter lin erwater l minutes. all customers are encouraged to conserve during the heat wave. pepco says this it the worst storm they ever dealt with. the weather caused a rough ride for amtrak passengers found themselves stranded for 20 hours. nbc's kristin welker continues team coverage. >> frustrated. frustrated. highly frustrated. >> reporter: david is living without power in his washington, d.c. home. more than 48 hours after a powerful storm hit the mid-atlantic and midwest regions

people across the area dealing without power. a look at the house in the dark in reston. home to needy and disabled seniors. residents are asking for donations of water, cooked food, juice, coffee and ice. if you are able to help them out please do so. also in fairfax county patience wearing thin after long hours without air conditioning. news 4 helped get the power back on for the people who need it most. >> reporter: here at the agape house in fairfax, independent living facility for the disabled, a scary frustrating ride. some like michael, are on dialysis. >> it is ridiculous. it's absolutely ridiculous. >> others have severe asthma. many have no cars and get their food delivered by food banks. they say it has been pitch black in the halls. >> everyone went out and got solar lights so we could see inside. >> with no power, no help and multiple unanswered calls to the

wesley housing development corporation who runs the home. >> that's why i called you all. we have to bring attention to this is inhumane. >> news 4 called dominion power. within hours the lights were back on. even our viewers showed up with food and water. this was the culprit. a large tree tangled in wires. it is a similar scene across the county. >> a disaster everywhere we go. ju just mother nature. can't help it. we got to get it done. >> a long few days here in fairfax county along fairfax boulevard. many of the stores here still dark. some of them though have brought in generator power. trying to keep the lights on inside the various stores here, and of course keep their customers cool. at this taco bell, a refrigerated truck was brought in and moved their food to a store to keep it cold. and at this mobile home park, families watch and crews work, and kids fry to keep from overheating.

here is the way tomorrow looks. cloudy, humid. thunderstorms we'll face later this evening will be gone by sunrise. 95 tomorrow afternoon. plenty hot. because of that, another opportunity for thunderstorms tomorrow. afternoon and evening. again some of those could be strong to severe. here is live radar. nothing in town just yet. look at developing thunderstorms now, across parts of northern west virginia and central west virginia. the severe thunderstorm watch is a long -- along into the west of the blue ridge mountains for now. until 2:00 in the morning. as storms continue to progress eastbound. the watch box may be expanded and extended later into the evernight houeve overnight hours. some could be in richmond in 2 1/2 hours. northern end of the line of storms could be in d.c. metro in 2 1/2 hours from now. you folks out to the west will get the storms sooner than that. it will not be as severe as friday night. that being said -- 50 to 60-mile-an-hour winds possible.
