in the middle of a stifling heat wave more than a million people are still without power this morning. crews are working feverishly to restore activity. they're raising fears that the kelt toll toll now at 22 could continue to rise. nbc's steve handelsman reports. >> reporter: washington, d.c., on day three of the massive power outage. it's another scorcher and still no air conditioning for a million households from north carolina to new jersey. >> it's prepost truss. at this point what are we left to do? what are we left with? >> reporter: trees. work crews have thousands to lift off homes and cars. utility crews have to rewire a grird that has been ravaged. pepco has crews from texas and even canada. >> you know people are not

happy. >> absolutely. and we get it. >> frustrated. highly frustrated. >> reporter: david rut lidge and his neighbors are spoiled, full of food. crowded malls and schools and libraries. word is power may not be back on for many until friday. >> we put a lot of money into restoring and/or hardening the system but this was around extreme event. >> reporter: the first storms blasted through friday night, 90-mile-an-hour winds. >> you could see rain falling, trees, trash being lited off the ground. >> reporter: storms in chicago. one kill add couple on a golf cart. another kill mand taking refuge in a barn. the death toll when the storms passed, 22. and today will be even hotter from coast to coast and in the mid-atlantic. more potentially powerful storms

are forecast. i'm steve handelsman, nbc news, washington. in his first comment since last week's contempt of congress vote attorney general eric holder said republicans voted against him to make attorney general a proxy to attack president obama. he told the post he won't resign. the attorney general said he is angry but not surprised by the vote over the justice department's decision not to turn over dounlts from the fast and furious gun tracking operation. he said in an election year, quote, you'd have to be exceedingly naive to think that that vote was about documents. >> a surprising new poll finds clie ma'am change is no longer american's chief environmental concern. according to a new "washington post" stanford university poll, 29% of americans consider water and air pollution to be the world's biggest environmental problem compared with only 18% now worried about global warming. that is down from 33% back in

st. louis conned their streak. denver was 101 yesterday. even minneapolis, a new record high yesterday of 99. so what's happening out there today? we have some very strong thunderstorms that are waking up people in the middle of the night. northern minnesota, probably the worst weather this morning. still very hot. the high pressure over tennessee. the warm air is flowing all the way up ahead of the next storm system it's going to be a very warm uncomfortbling day. the southern great lakes, iowa, illinois, and areas through missouri especially, that's where the heat index is going to approach 110 during the day. that's the "feel like" temperature. as far as the thunderstorms, they're rolling down. green bay, northern michigan is getting those storms. minneapolis is getting it. stay inside and then the storms should pass on through. so how hot will it be today? still 90s to a near 100. not much bet owner the east coast. that's a look at your national forecast. now here's a look outside your
