making the call for the first time. he says they're not keeping records of that call. we spoke to one resident who has given up on getting his power back. he has taken matters into his own hand. we'll have his story coming up at 6:00. darcy spencer, news 4. neighbors are roughing it in northwest d.c. on warren and sixth streets here.

a giant tree crushed two cars, yanked the power lines down with it. usually the roar from heavy equipment would annoy residents, but not this time. >> music to our ears. it's wonderful. isn't it great? >> it is. we were watching yesterday afternoon a lot of people were here planning, taking measurements, taking photos. >> reporter: neighbors are helping each other as best they can. a man who has power is letting the family next door to him run an extension cord to his home to keep the refrigerator number. here is a look at the latest outage numbers. still more than 75,000 people are without electricity. pepco says it restored power to norm norman more than 90% of customers. dominion has about 21,000, and bge has about 17,000.

today pepco says it is ahead of schedule in getting power turned back on to customers. >> but there is still a lot of confusion and frustration of who has lelectricity and who dose e. >> joining us on the phone is y myron opal. thanks for joining us. pepco says it should have power restored to customers by the end of the day. how is that progress coming? >> we met that milestone earlier this afternoon. so we have gotten power back to 90% of the 443,000 customers who lost power last friday. >> can we address this controversy over robo calls and maps on line being inaccurate. we have gotten several e-mails, lots of phone calls from people who say that they have been getting robo calls telling them the power is back on when it's not. they looked on maps online saying that their power is back on in their neighborhood and

it's not. so how accurate are those numbers? how much can people trust those numbers of 90%? >> if i could have a moment to explain that. what the call actually said, we have changed that message because of the confusion that it was creating. the call actually said that power has been restored to your area. with area not being defined. if you have no power, press number two. what happens is you have nested outages or somewhere on your line there's more than one trouble spot. so they go to the feeder line, and once that feeder line is energized, the system thinks that everybody else on that line has power back. because people -- if people will call us, continue to call us, please continue to call us and report those outages. it helps us define that there are people further down on the line who still have some other trouble that needs repair. and then we can get to them and get their power back.

what happens is this call goes out. if they press 2, it helps us identify that there is further trouble past that one repair that we made, and we need to make additional repairs until we get down to those individual houses. >> what do you say to people who are mad, really mad? they're angry, fed up, they're hot. their food is spoiled. they have had to find somewhere else to live. they are saying this is taking way too long. some of them have not seen trucks yet on their street. how do you address this anger? >> we understand their frustration. our crews worked 16-hour shifts and went out as soon as the storm passed on friday night. we have worked and were in full-court press since then. we brought in additional crews. we have 3,000 personnel mobilized to get power back. we will continue to do so. we will continue to work at that pace until the last customer is

restored. >> do you feel people are not understanding? do you feel they're being too hard on you? >> i wouldn't begin to characterize that except to say we are working as hard as we can. we want to get their power back on as quickly as possible. we will continue to press until that happens. >> we've seen the video of the workers. we know the long days, the horrible conditions they're working through. tell us how these triple digit temperatures in the next two three days ahead of us is going to impact meeting your goals and having power fully restored by saturday night. >> we hope that we will have no further weather. these estimates that we're making now, flpray that we haveo further complications from thunderstorms and additional outages. the conditions are very hard on the workers, on the crews out in the field in particular.

it's very hot for our customers. it's also hot for our crews. they do understand the frustration of the customers and will continue to press on until they get that power back on. >> thank you very much for joining us. good luck out there. >> thank you very much. speaking of the heat, let's find out what those crews and customers without will have to face for the next few days ahead. a seventh straight day of this intense heat. facing possibly some storms this evening. doug has the latest update. >> we are seeing some of those storms out there in parts of the area. storms just to our north and down to our south and west. 98 the current temperature out there now with a heat index of 102. northwest winds at 10 miles per hour. but no wind is going to help you when it's 98 out there. as far as the rest of the area goes, 95 in leesburg. 98 in laplata. 96 in annapolis. the heat index well over 100 in some areas. that's why we have the heat advisory in effect for everybody

here along the 95 corridor from baltimore to fredericksburg. here's the radar. there are two big storms right now. one just to the north of warr warrenington. these two storms are not severe right now, but they are increasing in strength. this is moving along 66 here. if you live towards manassas, get ready this may be moving your way. up towards frederick, these are moving down to the south. not severe at the moment, but more storms are upstream. we will talk about those and how they may effect your night tonight. neither power outages nor storm damage have stopped today's annual festivities. and they have not deterred the crowds. thousands are braving the heat out there to celebrate the july 4th on the national mall. richard jordan is live on the mall alt this hour where the crowds arrived early for front-row seats for tonight's

festivities. >> reporter: it is warm out here, that's why so many people came out early the they scored a spot in the shade, that's where they will sit it out and all eyes will be headed towards the sky. >> reporter: strike up the band. a holiday parade down constitution avenue. american i ccons from a giant uncle same to a tall and lean george washington all in attendance. the families gathered at the national mall. it's a tradition for many of those looking to celebrate in the heart of the nation's capital. >> love it. i love celebrating the fourth of july. it's our birthday. >> reporter: but for several in the crowd it's also a new way to stay connected. >> personally me, i live out of the country for work. i miss america. so i thought this is the best place to celebrate. >> reporter: those living across the u.s. and visitors from abroad were anxious to see what the big celebration was all about. >> we are on road trip from new york to miami for a month.

it's fourth of july so why not stop by washington, d.c.? >> we want to see the fourth of july in washington. >> reporter: tonight the stars of nbc prime time will shine on stage. javier cologne and megan from "smash" practice ed tuesday and will make up the special. these women are showing their patriotism with their wardrobe. >> we have invented a phrase called foj, fourth of july. these are foj outfits. >> reporter: what does a foj outfit entail? >> red, white and blue, as much sparkle and jewelry that you can have. >> reporter: the crowd is enjoying the day, but everyone knows the big attraction is still to come. >> fireworks. >> reporter: fireworks. that's right. the fireworks will be lighting up the sky here by the

washington monument. that's expected to start around 9:10, 9:15 tonight. the concert about an hour abobee that. if you are planning on coming out, police say don't bring your own fireworks, don't bring weapons or alcohol down here. also lots of streets are closed in the area. so you might want to take public transportation. it is really warm out here, so officials are saying you should pack some water. reporting live at the national mall, richard jordan, news 4. if you don't want to fight the traffic tonight, metro is an option, however it will be crowded. the system will close at midnight, however trains will be running at rush hour levels from 6:00 to midnight to get everyone home. metro is suggesting avoiding the smithsonian and federal triangle stations which are expected to be crowded. an overnight crash on the bw parkway has taken the life of a man. u.s. park police say they identified the victim as

38-year-old gary richards. he's reportedly a local rep for c chirac vodka. richards was stopped on the northbound ramp of the parkway. he pulled over on the shoulder to switch positions with a passenger when another car hit them. richards was killed. the other passenger injured. the driver who hit the car stayed on the scene. in southeast washington, an elderly woman who died in an apartment fire this morning has been identified as mildred maria harrison. the blaze broke out just before 2:00 this morning in southeast. the 71-year-old woman was found dead inside. investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire and they're also trying to figure out how harrison actually died. still ahead on news 4 at 5:00, our continuing coverage of the storm cleanup. we'll head to falls church where this power crew was a sight for

♪ in all that heat they're making beautiful noise. the marching band of broad run high school helped kick off the independence parade in downtown fairfax. it was a hot one for a parade, but main street was lined with spectators keeping themselves cool with hats, those hand fans and lots of ice cream, too. and it's all fun and games in arlington today. there is a day-long celebration in the city's new long bridge park. the celebration lasts until 10:00 tonight. city officials tell us the park is a good vantage point to watch the district's fireworks show. the nation's capital is known mainly for politics, but

every july 4th the palisades community of northwest washington offers up a parade with a real local hometown field. tom sherwood has the story. >> reporter: in the sweltering heat of this july 4th, a stretch of macarthur boulevard in northwest washington's palisades was for the 46th time turn the into a warm, okay a little corny, hometown patriotic parade with a mishmash of everything including kids and bikes, and, of course, back pipes. >> i think it's a great d.c. parade for the fourth of july. >> this is our day, liberty, freedom, country. >> reporter: 30-year resident karen plunket raised her family. >> it's a nice, old-fashioned community parade with neighbors, politicians, churches. ♪ >> it's great.

around my neighborhood, it's so hot. any time you're in the sunshine, there's no relief from the heat. power knocked out by the thunderstorms. guess what? more thunderstorms out there starting to develop. a new severe thunderstorm warning for fauquier county and prince william county. let's show you, first, down towards the mall. notice the winds. those winds blowing in some very warm air. once that wind shifted out of west, our temperatures skyroc t skyrocketed to 99 degrees. right now at 98 degrees. you can see where that storm s let's zoom into this storm. this is where we have the severe thunderstorm warning until 6:00. it includes hay market, it does not include manassas. if you live in and around manassas, off to the west,

warrenton, you're seeing that storm right now. not a whole lot of lightning, but you could see 40, 50, 60-mile-per-hour wind gusts here. watch out for this storm. it's current will you right over 15. effecting a lot of new that area. up to the north, north of frederick, along 15. you can take 15 all the way up and find more storms to the south of thurmont and to the rest of westminster. getting choked up by the storms. more of them back to the west here around martinsburg. we will continue to see these storms developing. as we widen out, here's more storminess here. this is what i'm worried about. this is a cold pool aloft, once they come over our warm air, they may create some storms. 98 degrees the current temperature out there. winds out of the northwest at 10 miles per hour. everybody on the warm side. 97 in laplata. 97 in culpeper.

96 in annapolis. the heat index 110 in leesburg. 105 in laplata. 102 in washington. an uncomfortable day. that's what we will see tomorrow. heat advisory in effect for everybody along the i-95 corridor until 9:00 tonight. watch out for those storms out there. watch out for the heat which is here to stay. 99 for tomorrow. heat index between 100 and 105. saturday. 101. heat index between 105 and 110. saturday looks to be the hottest day. that's not even a record high temperature for that day. the good news here, the best news on the seven-day forecast is nicer weather next week. the pattern shifts, and that heat moves back to the west. >> that's good news. still to come on new 4 at 5:00, a warning for runners. a woman was sexually assaulted on a popular trail in arlington. now the search is on for her attacker. pepco has revised its repair

fast forward through the headlines. still houses without ac in montgomery county. today one rockville community took to the pool to deal with the heat and celebrate the fourth. in their neighborhood about half the people have power while others remain in the dark. they are all qucustomers of pep, which has about 38,000 without power. >> the annual 4th of july fireworks show on the mall will cap off today's festivities. it is scheduled to started at 9:10. you're encouraged to take metro if you're going down there.

the system will close at mid night but the trains will run at rush hour level between 6:00 and midnight to get everybody home. leg let's go to the weather. >> this storm around the warrenton area, fauquier county, prince william county, along 66 and 15 here. around broken hill and towards the buck land area. it is moving towards gainesville this is around fauquier county. up north, another strong storm around lewis town, just to the north of frederick. maryland 15, this one producing a lot of lightning but not severe at moment. more storms to talk about coming up. five days without power, but for some there is light and air conditioning at the end of the tunnel. erica gonzalez reports on the relief that some are finally getting. >> reporter: it's day five without power in this falls church neighborhood.

customers are back on line, but still 26,036,000 people are sti without power. that's down from 540,000 who were all once out alt one time. a utility worker brought to virginia to help restore power has died in a crash in loudoun county. 57-year-old jacqueline greene was driving a freight liner bucket truck on route 7 last night. they believe she had trouble with the brakes while driving down the hill. the bucket truck crashed into a tractor trailer. greene died at the scene. a passenger was taken to the hospital. tonight police are on the hunt for a man, did they say sexually assaulted a woman who was jogging on an arlington trail. the 23-year-old woman was assaulted on four-mile run trail near glenn carlin park. the jogger says she was confronted by a man she had passed a few minutes earlier.

lion tamerins. while fascinating to watch, he wanted to find his favorite animal of all. so when we saw a zookeeper -- >> he has a question for you. >> do you have hedge hogs? >> well -- >> reporter: hedgehogs are his favorite. >> hedgehogs can turn into a spiked ball to protect themselves from predators. >> reporter: it turns out that the zookeeper just happened to have something to show us. >> i've never been in this part of the zoo. >> most people don't get to go back behind the scenes like this. >> reporter: ser is special because it is his birthday and working hard in school despite the many changes he's had to go through. >> he's a vivacious, intelligent, smart young man who has a beautiful, genuine smile.

a fourth of july tradition that is not for the feint of heart or stomach. today was the annual nathan's hot dog eating contest in new

york. on the men's side joey chestnut won for the sixth straight year. he downed 68 hot dogs in just ten minutes tieing a record he set back in '09. take a look. there's our local woman, in the women's competition, sonya the black widow thomas had no problems defending her title. she set and met a goal of eating 45 dogs, 12 more than the second place winner. the power outages meant a lot of people in our area were not able to prepare for the fourth of july as they planned. but that didn't stop the celebration in takoma park today. chris gordon has more on that and the folks still waiting to get electricity back. >> reporter: takoma park put on a dazzling parade this fourth of july, and will have fireworks tonight. despite power outages, pepco got

most here back online last night. >> we had more than 50% outage at the beginning. i think we're back down to a much lower number. i hope everybody just stays patient. >> reporter: maryland governor martin o'malley was scheduled it appear in the parade but withdraw in order to watch over the power situation. >> our power finally came back on, of course went out again last night for a little while. everyone is frustrated by it. 21stst century, the greatest country in the world. >> storms took out power lines and poles. pepco has been working hard to restore power here. >> we are happy. it was out for about three days. >> reporter: but in this bethesda neighborhood, this pool remains dangling dangerously low

in widewood manor. residents have not seen any work done here, despite pepco's claims that they're ahead of schedule. >> i know they say what they say, but we're not the only ones frustrated with their performance. >> reporter: in some neighborhoods crews are working in the heat this fourth of july trying to cool tempers of people still without power. chris gordon, news 4. it's just hot hearing those stories, and we're in day five. >> will those storms cool anything off? >> it will, when you get them. some of the areas are seeing these storms, around warrenton and up to the north. this storm was severe earlier. now it's calmed down across parts of that region. warrenton seeing some rain. south of warrenton, you can see the rain falling apart.

it's going to continue through prince william county, over about the next hof hour or so. once again, it may flair up for a time and then go back down. one of those that has gone down, this one here. it was strong about a half hour ago. now this one split into two pieces. right around walkersville, along 194 seeing shower activity there. the biggest storm now is this one around shepherdstown, west virginia, along the potomac and around scrabble. i didn't know there was a scrabble, west virginia, but now i do. a storm down to your south and east. watch out for that storm. a lot of lightning associated with that. more storms to the north and west. we will watch these closely. a lot of instability around. it doesn't take along to kick off some storms. where do you want to be right now? that's a pretty good place to be. a lot of boats tied up together to watch the fireworks. 98 degrees the current

temperature. heat index 102. you know it's on the hot side. it will stay that way for the next couple of days. right now, 96 college park. 93 in reston. 103 down towards warrenton. i expect more 100 degree temperatures tomorrow. and a heat advisory until 9:00 tonight and most likely in effect through tomorrow. tomorrow morning, it will be very warm and very, very sticky as we make our way through the next couple of days. those temperatures will go up again. 99 tomorrow is what we're forecasting. 98 on friday. 101 on saturday. 96 on sunday with a good chance of thunderstorm activity, then we get cooler and see nice weather come in for next week. if we can just get through the next couple of days, we'll be okay. >> doug, i think you had an extra letter on scrabble there.

>> did i? >> even computers like those viral cat videos. a politician accused of lacking compassion and a guy really upset with t-mobile. >> we have the pictures four you. researchers at google built a massive computer system that taught itself to recognize, of all things, cats. according to the "l.a. times," scientists had the computer look at millions of images and the computers were able to accurately identify cats. google researchers say this demonstrates a giant computer can learn without help from humans. >> how about this story. an australian lawmaker has been accused of lacking compassion after a very awkward moment on live tv. sophie said she thought the man sitting next to her was having a laugh when he collapsed on the set. a number of people who were watching criticized her on twitter for sitting there and freezing up and doing nothing to help the man. several crew members finally

heaviest i had ever been. i said i need to do something about this. i got a gym membership. i went to the gym, but it wasn't enough. i was like, okay, this treadmill, some people love it. i don't love it. some people are like there's a zumba class. i said what's zumba. then you hear the music. i'm like, this is hot. i got the courage, i stood in the back and i took the class. i fell in love. november 2009 i got certified as a zumba instructor. ♪ zumba is a latin cardio dance class. there's a lot of cardio, a lot of movements. it's international. it has a lot of beautiful rhythms, especially from central america, south america. we'll add a crunch or lunge to make it more of a workout. you actually in an hour can push up to 1,000 calories. aqua zumba is all before resistance. it's all about resistance. hand movement.

it is disconcerting when a patient with a condition like cancer goes in for a drug treatment and discovers that the drug their doctor has prescribed is not available for them. >> that's a serious and continuing problem. a possible reason? fake pharmacies. lisa meyers has our report. >> reporter: jake has stage four cancer. last summer as he was about to receive chemotherapy, he was suddenly informed the drug he needed wasn't available. >> my nurse told me the drug wasn't available and i wouldn't be able to do my chemo that day. i was shocked. how could this be happening in the united states of america? >> reporter: around the same time records show a pharmacy in this building in north carolina, ltc pharmacy, was buying the same drug to fill prescriptions. when north carolina regulators did an inspection, they found only this. no records. no equipment. >> reporter: did you find a

pharmacist? >> no. >> reporter: how can you have a pharmacy with no pharmacist? >> good question. >> reporter: investigators say it's a fake pharmacy, set up to exploit the drug shortage. >> this is about greed. this is simply about greed. people wanting to make a quick buck at the expense of sick person people. >> reporter: investigators say records show the pharmacy was buying the drugs, then often the same day selling them to a wholesaler owned by the same person. international pharmaceuticals, which was then reselling the drugs again at higher prices. >> congress investigators called this a fake pharmacy. do you agree with that assessment? >> we don't see any evidence of them filling prescriptions. >> reporter: there's a for lease sign. when we visited the company's office in durham, nobody was home. >> space is empty. >> reporter: no one is in there. faced with the prospect of having its north carolina license revoked, the company

surrendered it instead. congressional investigators say what happened here in north carolina is not an isolated case. they say they found what appear to be fake pharmacies around the country, buying up medicines in short supply. these pharmacies didn't cause the shortages, but investigators say by diverting into the gray market they're creating delays and added costs for patients. >> it's definitely making the shortages worse. and it's also driving up the prices. >> reporter: but the lawyer for the owner of the north carolina pharmacy says she is a smart business woman, who is actually helping, not hurting, by enab enabling medical facilities to get the drugs they need more quickly. jake got his drug a week late, but other cancer patients are fighting to survive. >> that was lisa meyers reporting. now, we are monitoring deveng
