105 tomorrow and events across the area are being cancelled. tracks expanded and bent. it was a green line train that went off the tracks. more than 50 passengers are stuck under ground until rescuers showed up. jackie bensen will have more on what they call a heat link -- kink, that is, responsible for the derailment. we go first to shomari stone at the west hyattsville station with the story from the passengers. >> that train was hitting here to the west hyattsville station and we talked to some of those passengers. >> reporter: how are you feeling with your boy and you are on the trail and it derails. james and his son wait outside the ambulance when the paramedics treat his pregnant fiance. what is going through your mind? >> fear. >> reporter: medics drove her to

the hospital. the train was going to d.c. when it derailed, rocked and came to a screeching halt. >> me by myself that's one thing but with my boys it was scarier. >> it was shaky. >> reporter: she said there was no air-conditioning. metro cut the power to the thattings. >> the pain just crashed. >> reporter: nearly 100 firefighters, and police rushed to the scene and escorted passengers through the dark evacuation shaft. >> we didn't understand what happened. >> reporter: the fire chief said it was incredibly hot when the folks were walking up the stairs and 100 degrees outside the tunnel. when they came above ground they started drinking bottled water and passengers cooled off in air-conditioned shuttle buss. no one was hurt but the derailment rocked people's

nerves. >> my son is crying and my 10-year-old is nervous. >> reporter: james and his family are back home tonight. doctors released his wife from the hospital. she is going to be okay. for more information on what caused the derailment we go to my colleague, jackie bensen. >> reporter: thank you, and good evening, everyone. we want to show you the bus bridge still busy at this hour even if you do not ride the green line the derailment affects you if you plan on using metro this weekend. this video shows the section of the green line tracks where the derailment is believed to have begun just before the tracks go into a tunnel prior to the west hyattsville station the rail on the right is bent. the third rail also appears to have been damaged. bottom line through sunday all metro trains will be forced to slow down to 35 miles an hour when they are above ground while investigators try to determine

whether the blistering heat caused the bend often referred to as a heat kink. >> it's too early to make those determinations but in the days ahead we will take stock. >> reporter: heat kinks are not uncommon and have caused problems before. but this happened two days after passengers on this same green line self evacuated a malfunctioning train and walked to the college park station in the sun. now commuters spent another evening waiting for buss in 100 degree heat. >> it's so hot out here. >> hot and the fares just went up? >> reporter: this weekend's previously scheduled work on the green line, the track work has been cancelled so the investigation into the derailment can be conducted. jackie bensen, news4. and the heat could cause more problems tomorrow. d.c. parks officials cancelled all little league and rec league

games and activities on city fields. >> an excessive heat effect goes into affect at 11:00 tomorrow morning. we are currently at 88 degrees with the dew point of 70. so it is very warm and it is very humid out there. winds out of the south at 8 miles an hour. this this is 11:00 at night. and the heat index is 98 degrees. 91 in lees burg. in the district, it is 93. and annapolis at 90 degrees. you can only imagine where we will be during the day tomorrow. that's why we have the excessive heat warning in effect for just about everybody along the i-95 corridor and places off to the west. this darker red here this is an excessive heat watch to see if we get to heat index above 110. and the advisory out to the

west. i raised my numbers for the weekend. it's not something you want to hear but the numbers are higher than what i showed you at 6:00. i'll show you how high i think we can go. and a warning for drivers and motorcyclist in the heat there has been buckling along roads in virginia. the concrete expands and makes uneven surfaces. they are warning everybody to look out for problem spots. pools will be packed and fitness centers will be busy. washington sports club is welcoming anyone over 18 to use the showers, charge electronics or cool off if they don't have power at home. animal shelter officials are were whatting pet owners to watch out for signs of heatstroke especially in dogs with shorter snouts. they have a harder time breathing in hot weather.

and the storm was raging around her. a man appeared from out of nowhere to help her. >> and he and i worked myself out of the front seat window. >> reporter: and he helped a dazed and profusely bleeding riley into his pickup truck and negotiated around downed trees and power lines to suburban hospital. she asked a nurse a write down the man's name but it was lost in the confusion of that night. her wish is simple. he wants to let him no she survived and wants to know if he got home okay. >> the nurse at the hospital said it is clear god is not threw with you yet. >> riley said it is incredible she made it out alive. it seems the capital where are is awfully slow to respond to emergencies. the roads stay snow covered, the power is out for days. people trying to get out and flee the disaster just see in

terrific for hours. two local leaders were asked about the troubles on wamu radio this morning. they discussed the earthquake and the gridlock that ensued on the roads. >> that was completely unexpected. but that is what a terrorist attack would be. >> there is no adequate form of transportation that allows that to happen in a way that is orderly. there is no jurisdiction in the country. >> there was a plan to have people hunker down in place instead of running for the exits. both agreed that power companies especially pepco must react more quickly. fire investigators said a propane grill on a balcony started a four alarm fire. three firefighters were overcome by heat while fighting the flames yesterday. grills are not allowed on apartment balconies if there is a roof own the balcony.

the man who shot and killed ray is von martin this year is at a safe house in florida tonight. his name is george zimmerman. he was let out of jail after posting a $1 million bond today. zimmerman is wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet and not permitted to leave the county. zimmerman is charged with second degree murder for killing martin in february. zimmerman maintains he shot martin in self defense. high speed rail is coming to america. california lawmakers approved billions of dollars to build a high speed rail line between los angeles and san francisco. altogether the project is expected to cost $68 billion. california will get $3 billion in federal fundings. supporters say it will create jobs. opponents worry it will push the cash-strapped state over a fiscal cliff. coming up tonight, the incredible video of a life and

the truck came within inches of the pump. no one was hurt in this crash yesterday. witnesses pulled the driver and a passenger out of the cab. the driver said the brakes gave out and walked away with just a citation. president obama is spending the night in camp david after going to ohio and pennsylvania. a dismal june jobs report sent the stock market plunging. and mitt romney says he knows how to get the economy back on track. >> reporter: continuing his his tour of ohio, president obama came to akron about the time that the bad news kamt in on u.s. jobs in june. 80,000 new hires. unemployment stuck at 8.2%. but at a rally, the president looked on the bright side. half a million manufacturing jobs in states like ohio have been regained.

refusing too. i'm steve handelsman, news4. a sad development at a diner that got a visit from president obama during his bus tour. officials say that the restaurant owner josephine anne harris died this morning of natural causes. she told the local newspaper she was thrilled to have met the president yesterday when he had breakfast at the diner. today mr. obama made a call to harris's daughter to offer his condolences. the heat sweeping the country forced a chocolate shop to close early. even with the air conditioner set at 68 degrees, the owners cannot keep the chocolate from melting. they tried moving everything to the back of the store. but every time people over the door it lets hot air in and the chocolate cant take it. >> they have to have a party and eat all the squishy chocolates.

we are all feeling squishy and melty right now. it's ridiculous. >> it is ridiculous. day nine and hitting day ten tomorrow and day 11 on the day sunday and we increased the numbers for the next couple days too. let's show you what is going on out there. an orange moon. why is the moon orange? that is what you get when you get a hazy atmosphere a lot of humidity. it looks like a big orange egg or a golden egg. the temperatures in the 80s but we hit 99 degrees earlier today with a low of 81 this morning. i think we will be around that low temperature tomorrow morning. the record high is 103. tomorrow's record is 102 and i don't think we're going to have much of a problem beating that record. here's a record. a record heat wave. days 95 degrees or higher, nine days in a row and it will be 11 by sunday if we get above 95 on

sunday. we had three streaks in the past. this is the only nine-day stretch and we will get to ten and 11. 88 degrees right now with a dew point of 70. that puts the heat index at 93 degrees. you will feel it tonight and you will feel it tomorrow. and you have been feeling it for the last week and a half. 82 in martens burg. 77 in culpepper. what is going to be happening tomorrow? well, let's just take a look at the numbers. i raised the number tomorrow to 104. we have only hit 104 in d.c. 11 times in 140 years. so tomorrow could make it an even dozen. 105 in culpepper. these numbers could be even higher in some locations. so that's why the weather

service put out this excessive heat warnings. but the dew point. you add in the dew point and you get a heat index of 110 plus in all of southern maryland. back to the west heat advisories and watches. what this is telling you this is going to be a hot day maybe the hottest day of the stretch. satellite and radar showing a good thing. no storms out there tonight. i don't think we'll see storms during the day tomorrow for the most part. tomorrow morning, mostly clear, warm and muggy. temperatures 73 to 82 degrees. tomorrow here's the high temperatures between 99 and 105 with record heat. temperatures tomorrow will soar and there is an isolated chance of a thunderstorm. but most of us will be fine. temperatures at the beaches do look better here. 87 on sunday, 83 on monday.
