today we reached 105 degrees, one of the hottest days of all time in d.c. and tomorrow that heat could give way to powerful storms. good evening, everyone. the extreme heat has taken its toll across the midwest and up and down the east coast. at least 61 deaths have been blamed on the triple digit temperatures. ten of those deaths in virginia, ten in maryland. we have team coverage tonight. darcie spencer is taking a look at how people are trying to beat the heat. first, let's go too chuck bell in the storm center. we're dealing with heat tonight and storms tomorrow? >> that's going to be the case, jim. the only way to get out of this extreme heat is to deal with the thunderstorms before the cooler air can settle in. only one with of our reporting stations failed to cross 100 degrees today. lees burg, i hope you enjoyed your capitol hilly 99. it was 105 record shattering

degrees in washington. 103 in annapolis. how about the hottest days ever in washington? today ranks right up there with august of 1997, july 1936 and only two days officially hotter than today, 1918 and 1930. goes back a long time. tomorrow won't be quite as bad. it's going to be another steamer. it's 91 degrees here at 11:00 tonight. just a few sprifrpg els along the chesapeake bay for now. may have to deal with severe weather in the cooler seven-day coming up. >> we'll see you in a bit. anyone who stepped outside, instantly felt the roar of those triple digit temperatures today. some people tried to wait out the heat, hoping for a cooler night. they were out of luck. darcie spencer live in resten tonight. still out in the heat, darcie? >> i sure am. i'm the kind of person who can really take the heat. i like it, but i found myself trying to stay inside the air conditioned live truck as much as possible.

when you walk outside the heat is oppressive. tonight there wasn't much rel f relief. inside they're singing and dancing. outside the tables are empty. in fairfax county, the crowd is thin. after a day of record breaking heat, the night isn't much better. >> no breeze. the mind-set you have, you can either enjoy it or sit and be miserable. we chose to enjoy it. >> would you rather have sun or snow? >> snow. and sun. same thing at resten town center. those out on this hot night trying to stay inside as much as they can. >> what do you think of this weather? >> i think it should go away. i would like it to be winter again. >> reporter: earlier you can see, it was 104 degrees. 12:30 in the afternoon. those who ventured out on the mall experienced the blistering

heat. >> it is hot and muggy. we're from phoenix. muggy is getting us very hot. >> i had to go inside to get me some cool air. >> reporter: the folk festival still drew a crowd. for some, it meant staying out of direct sun. >> it is boiling hot, so i just drink a lot and bring my own shade. >> reporter: that's a great idea, to bring along your own shade like an umbrella. tomorrow isn't expected to be much better, so again, if you're heading out, make sure you take plenty of water. reporting live from resten, darcie spencer, news 4. >> just what you need, darcie, if you're going to stay out there. >> some people are sufficienting in all this heat without electricity and air conditioning. still pepco says it's just a handful of outages left from last weekend's storm, there are 21 outages that are heat related. beg has 200 outages remaining

from the storm. dominion's website has just over 500 outages listed at last check. most people who lost power because of last week's storms now have it back. one with group of residents are still in the dark. the people in this building spent their eighth day without power and ac today. pepco fixed the polls, someone stole the wires that lead into the house. they complained to the landlord but to no avail. >> he told me he would have someone here thursday. thursday comes, no one's here. now saturday. i called him this morning. he can't get anybody to come until monday. >> the residents say they were told they can't get help from d.c. because they're not on public assistance. we're getting our first look at the long dark walk for passengers evacuating a derailed metro train yesterday. a gazette newspaper reporter took this video which shows the

walk-through the tunnel and up several flights of stairs. officials say the heat caused a section of track to bend outside the west hyattsville metro. the heat kink is what caused the train to derail. green line service will remain suspended tomorrow. shuttle buses are being used in the meantime. more than 324,000 pounds of various frozen ready to eat meat and poultry products are being called tonight. the products may be contaminated with listeria, it's a serious infection that could lead to death. they include packages of frozen meat balls and meatloaf. all of them produced by buona vita located in new jersey. for a full list of producted go too usda.gov and click on the recalls tab. for the first time in 60 years, an historic election in libya. citizens voted in free national election day.

more than 100 people are dead after flooding and landslides near the black sea in southern russia. heavy rain began falling overnight. rain expected to continue until monday. the emergency minister says some towns have been cut off by floodwaters or landslides. hundreds of people had to be rescued from their homes. back here at home, massachusetts congressman barney frank married his long time partner jim ready today, governor duvall patrick officiated. the vows said in the ceremony were with unique to say the least. they included the line, do you promise to love each other and be each other's best friend whether with democrats or republicans, whether the book is good or bad? frank is 72. ready is 42 years old. the ceremony was attended by more than 300 friends, family and colleagues.

it's a summer tradition in spain, the running of the bulls. and again, there were injuries. one with man was gored. five others injured, thousands raced the bulls through the streets of pamplona today. running of the bulls will take place daily until july 14th. the event draws thousands of on lookers each and every year. when could the storms arrive? how strong could they be? chuck's forecast is just ahead. ♪

justin bieber is in the spotlight for a different reason tonight. on friday, the california highway patrol ticketed bieber for speeding in his flashy sports car. an l.a. city councilman says he called 911 after bieber blew past him on the freeway with doing more than 100 miles an hour. angie crouch has more. >> reporter: this new picture taken by a french tourist shows justin bieber getting pulled over by the chp. >> he was looking for the car first, that's why i took the picture. and then i heard that it was justin beeb he's. >> he came by like a rocket ship in that silver car. >> reporter: dennis saw bieber followed by a caravan racing through traffic. >> he passed me, weaving in and out of traffic. and then a number of other cars, five or six other cars following. and it was a chase, it looked like a police chase. >> reporter: once bieber was pulled over, the cars following

through philadelphia and jersey shore. that's all fading away now. not a lot else going on across much of the country. just socked in with the heat. there's your slight risk area for severe weather tomorrow. a miserably hot and sticky night tonight. no doubt about it, as the front inches its way down into the steamy air mass, the thunderstorms will fire up tomorrow. not looking for a repeat of a week ago friday, but still thunderstorms tomorrow could still produce 50 to 60 mile an hour winds in isolated places. good news is, once the front settles down to our south, much cooler weather coming on in, beach weather for tomorrow. another steamy day at the beach, then turning cooler as we get into the early parts of next week. 75 to 83 for overnight lows tonight. and then tomorrow, high temperatures mid to upper 90s. fredericksburg, stafford, may touch 100 tomorrow. i don't think we'll make it into triple digits in town. that's it. temperatures back into the
