another price. good afternoon, everybody. i'm jim handly. >> i'm pat lawson muse. for many those storms brought an end to the searing heat. for some it became another case of losing power. dominion says about 3,400 of its customers are without electricity. bge reports just over 2500 without electricity, mostly in baltimore city, baltimore county and anne arundel county. the storms that blew through brought an end to a series of weather records we were setting. >> first word from veronica in the storm center. >> that's right, guys, we like seeing that, and we're going to talk more about the records we set in just a couple minutes. but for right now we're at 84 degrees, reagan national airport. we're running 15 to 18 degrees cooler than yesterday. look at the dew point

temperature, it sits at 60 degrees right now. we have seen that number, of course, as high as 65 to around 70 the last couple days, giving us very sticky air. if you look at the satellite and radar reviews, to the north clearing skies. to the south clouds, and even a few thunderstorms. one is headed over toward ocean city. that's a weather front market right around our area. it's bringing in drier air and definitely cooler air. raffle from today, just over a quarter inch of rain, winchester, just a half inch. culpepper and just over that about a third of an inch in baltimore. storm4 radar shows nothing more than just a few showers, but down to the south, more storms and down to the south, south of lynchbu lynchburg, south of areas of richmond, virginia, severe thunderstorm watch there until 9:00 p.m. for us it's still sprinkles, and

still a bit of humidity. for 7:00 p.m., 85 the temperature, for 11:00 p.m., 78 degrees your temperature. we'll talk about an even bigger cooldown, and of course during the day too. how long can we keep this cooler air around? that's all coming up in a couple minutes. they took a hard hit in fredericksburg. last night strong winds nearly flattened several businesses along a stretch of fleming street. four people, including two children, window up in the hospital. now officials from the national service are trying to figure out if it was indeed a tornado that caused the damage. melissa mollet reports. >> reporter: witnesses say it sounded line a train. it was raining so hard you could hardly see outside. now this building behind me is almost completely gone. cars smashed in the parking lot next door, dao debris everywhere. it's amazing to think no one was

seriously hurt. the storm came from the northwest barrelen across jefferson davis highway, first slamming into this strip mall. at virginia mattress direct, the roof gone. through the glass, you can see a pile of debris inside the set and trend salon. a portion of the roof was lifted off, smashing it onto the owner's suv. clyde garland owns a used car lot just across from the debris. >> couldn't believe it. something i had never seen before. >> reporter: the wind crashed into cheer fusion, blowing away most of the cinder blocks here. the 20 children and their parents who were inside hit just through this doorway in a room lined with metal. seven were hurt, four went to the hospital, but it didn't stop there. the cinder blocks and roof flying across this lot, smashing into this home where they have lived for 50 years i want just

turned the hout upsidedown. everything started falling. >> reporter: the winds slammed into brenda mcfall's house. >> we saw the sky get dark, come inside, then we're watching everything. next thing we know, we see hail, so we knew it wasn't a regular thunderstorm. >> reporter: the gusts careened into this street, slamming trees into a half dozen houses. maria white's home splattered with leaves and mud. >> it was bad. this tree out front was down, all the debris. >> reporter: building inspectors took a tour of the destruction. power is out here, and some stores suffered only minor water damage. >> just can't believe it. never seen anything like this. it looks like a war doane out here. >> reporter: the next step will be a survey by the national weather service. they'll determine if the damage was caused by anything more than very strong winds.

in fredericksburg, virginia, melissa mollet, notify noif. the problems from the hot weather aren't over yet. in some places the cooler temperatures and desperately needed rain are coming a little too late. nbc's jay gray has the story. >> reporter: as a record heat wave finally begins to break, the concern of damage and deadly effects still linger. after temperatures over 100 over much of the country for the past two weeks. >> it's a very dangerous circumstance. >> the extreme conditions are being blamed for at least 74 deaths across 14 states. today noaa scientists confirmed what many of us already felt, the first six months of this year have been the hottest ever on record. >> we've seen worsening conditions across much of the intermountain west, stretching through the plains and into the ohio valley. that's having a lot of impacts on the ground, and also with agriculture. >> reporter: a cold front could drop many places 10 to 15

degrees, bringing relief and much-needed rain. though a violent clap of thunder and flash of lightning clearly rattled players during last night ace major league game in arlington, texas. the hot dry weather is no game for those who struggle from living with -- >> our farmers are really hurting. >> reporter: drought conditions stretch over half of the country, creating what scientists call the largest drought footprint of the 21st century. cornstalks and many other crops have withered and died, and any rain now is just an insult. >> rain today will not do us any good. it's over will. mother nature hasn't been very good to us this summer. >> reporter: a pliering summer that's really only just begun. washington's tallest structure is expected to stay closed to the public until 2014. last year's 5.8 magnitude

earthquake caused extensive damage to the interior and exterior of the washington monument. following a lengthy investigation, the national parks service says it's ready to move forward with repairs. it's expected to start those repairs sometime this fall. they should last up to about 18 months. during that time the building and some of the area surrounding the monument will be closed to the public. it didn't take long. they have reached a settlement in their divorce case. attorneys for both sides released statements today, saying the two had reach an agreement. that brings a quick resolution in hollywood terms for a marriage that lasted five years. by comparison, kim kardashian is still in negotiations with her exfor a marriage that lasted only three months. they have a 6-year-old daal suri. we'll have more ahead at 4:15. the man who admits to sthooting and killing tray von martin is at a florida safe

house. he posted a $1 million bond, wearing an electronic monitoring brace lett, and he ebbet leave seminole county. a judge originally revoked the bond after prosecutors accused him and his wife of misleading the court about their finances. meanwhile, the death of actress natalie wood remains a mystery nearly nine months after detectives reopened the case. new media inquiries began this weekend after records that the core nor changed the cause of death from accidental to undetermined. she was vacationing a catalina island with her husband actor robert wagner and actor christopher walken. ted the coroner's department had determined she had several glasses of wine and accidentally fell overboard. a new tax war is heating up today. for months president obama has been calling for tax hikes on people who make $1 million or

more per year. today he widened the net, called for tax hikes at the quarter million level. steve handelsman has the story. >> reporter: to change the subject from the slow recovery and to be seen on the side of the middle class, president obama again proposed hiking taxes on 2% of americans. >> i just believe that anything making over $250,000 a year should go back to the income tax rates we were paying under bill clinton. >> but the former president a few weeks ago said that's not the right move now. other democrats, nancy pelosi, new york's chuck schumer, wanted the cutoff at a million, for rates to rise from 35% to 40%. republicans say small businesses tax-like individuals will be hurt. >> it would affect our being. i don't understand how you can see multiple job reports come in

big loss in the entertainment industry. hollywood is mourning the loss of oscar-winning actor earnest borgnine. he died yesterday in los angeles at the hospital with his family by his side. borgnine is known as the mischievous naval office in "mchale's navy." in 1955 he played in "marty." he was 95 years old. there's a new cash dashian to keep up with. kourtney kardashian has welcomed their second child. she weighed 7 pounds, 14 ounces. grandmohr kris jenner said

kourtney had an easy delivery, and penelope looks like her bigger brother mason. normally around this time each month we would be talking with billy bush out in l.a. from "access hollywood." but over the weekend he had an accident biking with friends in utah. he's expected to be just fine, but we're told he has a broken collarbone. he's here with one of his three daughters. he's undergoing surgery later today. billy will likely be out all week from "access hollywood." and "a.h. live." >> ouch. we know that hurt. last year "the hunger games" debuted. now the sequel is getting help from an academy award-winning star. philip seymour hofmann is joining the cast for the part 2 of the tryly.

well, it was so nice to have a cool breeze blowing today. >> wasn't it? >> yeah, and we're seeing the humidity kind of leave the air, too, kind of cleanse itself. a lot of folks saying good riddance to that heat. stay away. >> fat chance. >> it's going to be at least a couple days, i can assure you, for at least the next seven days we will not have any extreme heat. with el do have some clouds, but let's look back, shall we. when we hit sunday, we had 11 days in a row where a temperature was 95 degrees or higher. when we look back to four of those days when we were 100 or higher. uh-huh, thursday, friday, saturday, sunday was the first

time we did that since 1930. in fact, when you lee it can numbers, saturday 105 degrees, sunday we hit 102. this was the hottest stretch of heat we've sever gotten around here. and advisory, today, we're in the 80s, so we're seeing that cooldown. staying away for a white now. manassas virginia at 80, 82 in germantown maryland, and alexandria, you're coming in at 84 right now, so certainly much more comfortable than last week, right? still on the humid site. a touch of fog around the area tomorrow morning, and south there could be light showers, but look at this, the temperature will be starting between 70 and 74 degrees tomorrow morning. that's where the storms are, big storms, too. big thunderstorm watch. area south, down through north carolina, until 9:00 p.m., so fierce storms still firing ose

and south of where the boundary is now, so that front moves through us, we've got the drier area, a little bit cooler air across our area. that front will meander done hoar, so we'll continue to see clouds. there would be few showers in the mountains off to our west. all in all a partly sunny to mostly cloudy sky at time. here's the forecast. and as you take a look -- well, that's not for tomorrow afternoon. 86 degrees tomorrow. that's it. the last couple days we've been posting the triple digits. 87 degrees for thursday, 85 for friday. i said this high heat, the

welcome back to "news4 at 4." i'm pat lawson muse. >> the national weather service is working to figure out if a tornado caused all this damage in fredericksburg, virginia. several businesses were practically demolished when a line of strong storms rolled through last night. four people were hurt, but residence say it's a miracle that no one was killed. a live update at the top of the hour. katy holmes and tom cruise have officially reached a settlement, bringing an end to their five-year marriage.

holmes filed for divorce late last month. no details have been made public, but they issued a joint statement, saying they will work to do what's best for their daughter, suri. president obama upping the ante today. instead of urging tax increases for americans -- he's aiming now for tax hikes. republicans say raising taxes will not put americans back to work and could further stall the economic recovery. on wall street stocks extorted the new trading week on a negative but relatively flat note. and the s&p 500 ended with a two-point loss. two months ago, a simple ziplining accident led to a medical nightmare that changed aimee copeland's life forts. she was infected with a flesh-eating bacteria.

she's still recover. copeland just started rehab their, and her progress is remarkable. gabe gutierrez reports. >> reporter: for most people they're everyday tasks, for aimee copeland, they are milestones. >> i was absolutely astonished. >> reporter: on his facebook page, he writing -- just a quick note. aimee fed herself today for the first time. she can also now brush he own teeth. how's that for only four full days of rehab? yeah, i'm beaming from ear to ear right now. >> just being able to tackle this and tackle it head-on, and basically make the most of it as a very early stage in the rehab process is phenomenal. >> reporter: last week aimee was transferred from a georgia hospital to a rehab center. the 24-year-old grad student lost her limbs to a flesh-eating bacteria after a ziplining accident in may. copeland sis his daughter is now using velcro cuffs stuck to the

end of her arms. >> just surviving this infection, this nasty spreading infection which kills playable up to 50% of its victims is -- >> reporter: late this week she is scheduled to be fitted with her first prosthetics. >> i don't know that she's extraordinary, she's a normal person, but she has just really responded quite well to extraordinary circumstances. aimee's expected to be in rehab for 6 to 8 weeks. in the meantime her parents are now remodeling their house so aimee can continue her recovery once she's released from rehab. the former stepson of singer usher has been declared brain-dead after an accident on a lake in georgia. kyle glover was riding in an inner tube when he was hit by a passing jet skier friday in atlanta. the boy has 23409 shown signs of brain activity since doctors admitted 4i78. official say it's too early to

a lot of unscripted drama on the set of sandra bullock's new movie in massachusetts today. a city bus hit a tractor trailer that was part of the production equipment for the film. several people on the bus were treated for minor injuries. the movie's a comedy about cops called "the heat" with melissa mccarthy from "bridesmaids." lance armstrong is fighting back, fighting the latest doping charges. the seven-time tour de france winner filed a suit today, arguing the agency violates the constitutional rights of athletes to a fair trial. it also accuses the head of the agency wages a personal vendetta against him. armstrong won the tour de france every year between 199 and 2005. if found guilty of doping, he

everything is dry. >> we are crunchy out there. >> exactly. we're going to get some rain, at least for the overnight period for tomorrow, we'll get it, but it won't be in the form of thunderstorms. a lot of folks really love the sound of that. we're almost 7 inches down for the year on rainfall. a cool pattern for us, too. let's look at the area. we're at 84 degrees. you folks over there in green belt, camp springs, 81 degrees, 86 in college park right now, as far as falls church, 80 degrees, currently that's pretty nice, 15 to 20 degrees cooler. we'll take a look at the radar right now, pretty quiet. we had a few light showers, a few sprinkles. where most of that rain is is along south of that weather boundary that moved through. you can see a big cluster of showers and storms around shallotsville, roe anew york city, areas, raleigh, north

carolina, all this is shi shifting -- there they are in raleigh, roanoke with a couple warnings out. even close to ocean city, some moderate rainfall is falling there. so we're going to be taking a look at the forecast, ocean city the next couple days. mt. airie, and 72 the start down around fredericksburg, and 75 to start your day tomorrow up in annapolis. not too bad, right? could be a touch of fog, too. then for tomorrow afternoon, 85, 84, to around 87 degrees for a high temperature tomorrow. in fact the next couple days, we will see our highs around the mid 80s. heading to the beach, that water temperature sits in the upper 70s to around 80 degrees. for tomorrow showers around the

area. high temperature just 82 degrees. for wednesday 84, for thursday 82. finally even cooler there at the coast, maybe you're heading to bethany beach or rehobeth, not bad. as you look at wednesday, 85 our temperature. thursday right now is quiet 87, we're just calling it mild here. then for the end of the week as temperatures push into the upper 80s, for saturday, for sunday, 88 to 90 degrees, there's a little bit of heat, but much better compared to the 105 we hit this past saturday, a chance for showers and thunderstorms this upcoming weekend. mostly showers for tomorrow and wednesday. and then we could be pushing back to a little bit of heat by the mid part of next week. so tomorrow a 20-degree difference from saturday. >> huge. >> bundle up.

[ female announcer ] purina cat chow indoor. always there for you. . an appeal in a case that grabbed nationwide attention several years ago. scott peterson is trying to save his own life after spending eight years on death row in california. his lawyers claim mob mentality not evidenced sent him to prison

in this case. natalie morales has the story. >> reporter: laci peterson disappeared. scott peterson told police he went fishing in san francisco, and when he returned to home in modesto, laci weren't there. laci's remains were found nearby the next day, not far from where peterson told police he had been gone fishing. he was arrested and charged. he had dyed his hair blond, had grown a goatee, and carried cash, credit cards and other items in his car. he was tried and convicted in 2004. in the appeal filed last thursday, peterson's attorney says the prosecutor could not prove how the crime occurred. there were no confessions or admissionses much culpability. there were no eyewitnesses and

there was no murder weapon found. >> they're raising good evidentiary issues the problem is that circumstantial evidence alone is enough to establish guilt. >> reporter: the appeal also said a mob of more than 1,000 people waited outside the courthouse for the verdict and cheered the departing jurors after they found peterson guilty, but before they deliberated his penalty. >> certainly the question of how the media affected these jurors will be examined carefully, but in this day and age, trials go on, particularly high-profile cases. >> reporter: peterson is on death row at san quentin, spending 19 hours a day alone in a single cell. >> certainly not a life that any of us would enhave. >> attorney michael cardoza provided analysis of the trial and was asked to cross-examine scott peterson by the defense. >> he's let out of his cell five hours a day to exercise, play board games, to do things in the

yard with the other inmates. he's only with the people that have been sentenced to death. they call that the condemned. >> reporter: a label peterson is now fighting to change. >> they're hoping a court will reverse their conviction and send them back for a second trial. >> now, this won't be settled any time soon. lawyers familiar with the case say more briefs will be filed and that the court could spend a year or more studying them before scheduling a hearing. now at 5:00, was it a tornado that caught an area of virginia off-guard? >> tonight at 5:00, the investigation into how three children apparently drowned in a creek on maryland's eastern shore. >> a horse who was stabbed last spring is slashed again in fairfax county. this is information on when the monument may be open again to tourists. good evening, everybody.
