corruption investigation surrounding mayor vincent gray's 2010 campaign. public relations executive jeanne hair sis is pleading guilty to charges of making illegal straw donations to the gray campaign as well as other candidates for local and federal office. she's also acknowledging a scheme that allegedly funneled more than $650,000 through her business. for a shadow campaign to to get gray into office in d.c., she says that scheme, however, was not her idea. tom sherwood is at the hearing and will have all the latest developments coming up right here on news 4 at 5:00 tonight. d.c. fire investigators are still trying to figure out what caused a two-alarm fire at an old northeast washington elementary school. firefighters responded late last night. crews had a tough time fighting the fire because some of the doors were welded shut. the blaze did so much damage

investigators say the building is unstable. witnesses report seeing people inside the building about 30 minutes before the fire. no one was hurt. a hit-and-run accident in arlington today killed a man who was reported missing and endangered. >> that's right. it was hundreds of miles away. investigators are trying to figure out how that 62-year-old victim from massachusetts wound up here. they are also working to find the driver who struck him in the southbound lanes of route 110 near i-395. that accident snarled traffic for hours this morning. nbc's megan mcgrath has our report. >> reporter: police walk along the side of the highway looking for personal effects and footprints, anything had a could explain how the victim came to be in the middle of route 110 at the start of rush hour this morning. what police do know is that the car that struck him was going fast and didn't stick around. >> and this individual was struck and thrown approximately 600 feet from point of impact, so he was hit at a high rate of

speed just by the sheer distance of being thrown. >> reporter: it was a passing motorist who called 911. they told the dispatcher there was a car on the side of the road with a man lying in front of the vehicle. but when officers arrived, the car was gone. police say the victim is 62 years old, a veteran with a history of mental illness. he was listed as miss iing and endangered by authorities in massachusetts a week and a half ago. his body was found on the sidewalk that runs along 110 not far from the wall that surrounds arlington national cemetery. there were also two construction projects in the area. >> we're trying to work through and identify this person, whether he was working on a construction crew, passing through the area, here to visit the cemetery. there are so many different avenues or possibilities. it's too early to make the call. >> reporter: and investigators are looking for help from the public in this case. anyone driving through the area just after 5:30 and may have seen something, you are asked to call arlington county police. megan mcgrath, news 4.

residents of georgia are cleaning up today after severe storms pummeled many parts of the state overnight. in atlanta the storms brought down trees, dozens of them. some landed on the roads. others landed on houses. a 59-year-old woman ended up in the hospital after being struck by lightning. she is listed this afternoon in stable condition. the local power company says more than 1,000 customers are still in the dark waiting for power to be restored. >> our weather is warming up. folks, we have a chance for rain again. >> veronica johnson is live with the latest. hey, veronica. hey there guys and, doug, out of the frame. we have a chance for just a few showers. nothing big around our area. take a look at some of the temperatures. ocean city, maryland, 79 degrees right now. definitely our cool spot. manassas, virginia, at 82 degrees. gaithersburg at 86 degrees now and our warm spot, yeah, 90 now in college park, maryland. and 90s may be creeping back

into our forecast. but for right now again generally in the mid and upper 80s. we have some scattered clouds and even some showers showing up. those are mainly north and down to our south. you can see a little shower there around fairfax and then we've got more rain up in areas of frederick county, carroll county and then way south down around the northern neck. so there's the possibility up until 9:00 p.m. of seeing some scattered showers around our area. it's going to be warm, too. 87 degrees at 5:00 p.m. partly cloudy. 84 by 7:00. and then as we head to 11:00 p.m., 79 degrees for a temperature. the fast 4-cast shows us it will be warm tomorrow. call it hot. talk about temperatures throughout the area and the possibility of some much-needed rainfall coming up and we're going to be premiering one of the newest parts of our weather department. it's brand spanking new and will be getting a big workout this

summer. sh showcasing it coming up in just a couple of minutes. the city of scranton, pennsylvania, facing a severe budget crisis. right now officials there say it has roughly 5,000 left in funds. to try to cut the costs the mayor has cut nearly 400 city workers paid minimum wage now. he says the city council is to blame for the cash shortage. he claims they passed a budget that borrowed a large sum of money from bajs without figuring out how to pay it back. unions representing the workers are planning a federal lawsuit against the mayor. now to presidential politics, today president obama and mitt romney both campaigned in states that voted democratic the last time out. and they talked about taxes. the issue is red-hot with an end of the year deadline, a new presidential proposal and another battle looming with congress. steve handelsman has the latest. >> reporter: iowa is where barack obama's rise to the white

house began in 2008. like they did then, iowans lined up to see him today, but not as many. >> the biggest thing right now is to get everybody back to work. >> reporter: polls here show the race a dead heat now that the president is pushing his new tax plan. >> make sure the taxes on the 98% of americans don't go up and then we should let the tax cuts expire for folks like me, for the top 2% of americans. >> reporter: taxes would go up on individuals making over $250,000 and those small businesses that pay at that rate. mitt romney informs colorado, another obama state in '08, slamming the president's plan. >> the very idea of raising taxes on small business and job creators at the very time we need more jobs is the sort of thing only an extreme liberal could come up with. >> reporter: romney was in the same school where the president three years ago pushed his number one accomplishment,

september. these are short-term improvements that are part of a larger plan to ease congestion near the new federal building. the next phase is set to begin next march and should be finished a year from now. you may not have to pay monthly fees if you have an e-z pass in virginia. the electronic toll paying service has decided not to pay a fee if you already have a transponder. only new customers will have to pay the monthly fee and existing customers will have to pay 50 cents a month for any new transponders they order. e-z pass backed off fees for everyone after many customers complained about them but e-z pass now says they need the fees to keep up with rising costs. >> we're just getting started. have you ever pretended to fall in love only to have it turn into the real thing? the hot talk around town. and cain joins us live in studio with the story. also, a crooner joins a country singer for the new s

i do think we're going to see temperatures in the 90s start to creep back into the forecast where the end of the week and toward this weekend. now earlier i said there was a shower there in fairfax and, indeed, it is still sitting there north of manassas right now. fairfax right along i-66. don't think that's going to last too long. you have some other showers up i-95. baltimore, i-83, and down around richmond. so everything right now is moving off to the east. that shower in fairfax may hold together to bring a little bit of wet weather inside the beltway. for your good night wake-up forecast at 9:00, 82 degrees the temperature. 78 by 11:00 p.m. and we'll start the day tomorrow muggy and warm. 73 to 74 degrees. here is what's going on. we have that same front, folks, still down to our south and it's going to be meandering down there the next couple of days. so what we get tomorrow a few clouds and the possibility of some showers in the mountains and just north and west of our area. and for thursday i think we're going to see more sunshine

shadow campaign scheme to get gray into office. news 4's tom sherwood will have the latest developments coming up. a man reported missing and endangered in massachusetts died in a hit-and-run in arlington this morning. police have not identified the victim but they did reveal that he was a 62-year-old veteran. a car hit him on route 110 near arlington. investigators are still looking for the driver. >> president obama and mitt romney were both on the road today. the president campaigned in iowa and renewed the call he made yesterday to raise taxes on americans who earned mo are than $250,000 a year. in colorado romney slammed the plan and called the president an extreme liberal. he renewed his vou to repeal the president's health care reform law. >> and wall street another day of losses.

people from returning to the u.s. after giving up their american citizenship. an egyptian couple under arrest tonight charged with trying to smuggle their 5-month-old baby boy through an airport baggage scanner. screeners in dubai made the discovery during an x-ray scan. he was hid nen a carry-on bag. officials say the parents both had entry visases and passports but the child did not. carry-on luggage is typically scanned after arrival in the united arab emirates after passengers clear customs. one of the most recognizable faces of the women's u.s. national soccer team is being publicly warned today after failing a drug test. the u.s. anti-doping agency says goalkeeper hope solo tested positive for the banned substance --

we're 91 in frederick. 90 in sharl lotsville. again, a couple of spots hitting right at 90 degrees today but upper 80s. yesterday's high was 87 degrees. so one degree higher today and tomorrow. here is a look at your forecast anywhere from 86 to 89 degrees the forecast. culpepper 86. 89 right in d.c. with a few clouds around the area. tomorrow is going to be a partly sunny day and notice the showers and storms in the mountains for tomorrow. areas north and west, even hagerstown, martinsburg, cumberland down to charlottesville could have showers and a few isolated storms tomorrow. we're seeing at least some showers right now on radar. they're in prince william county and fauquier county and in fairfax county right now. they have been weakening, all moving off to the east so that one there that's just northwest of fairfax right now, it may last and hold together going right inside the beltway. ocean city right now is quiet but we have, in fact, even seen some showers and storms there.

the water temperature for ocean city, bethany beach at 80 degrees so a little warmer with that east wind. 81 the forecast for tomorrow with a partly sunny sky. 80 on thursday with some showers, possibly even a thunderstorm around. just rain showers in the forecast for friday. friday, in fact, with the high of 82. we could see a little more cloud cover around our area. so the next four days, 89, 89 wednesday and thursday. 88 on friday with more clouds. a chance of showers, maybe even a thunderstorm as well as the first half of the weekend. so the next three days it's going to feel much like it does today but the weekend and next week we're back into the 90s. 90 to 96 degrees. it's going to be hot and it's going to be humid coming up again this weekend. the best chance for showers and storms will be on sunday. in fact, we could even have severe storms around the area on sunday. the early part of next week, 96 to 90.
