amid a federal investigation into his 2010 campaign. >> top leaders at penn state look the other way instead of protecting young boys. that's the finding from an explosive report about the cover-up involving the jerry sandusky scandal. >> narrows down the list of potential v.p. picks. >> our top story tonight, his job is to protect the first family. but, tonight, a d.c. police officer is under investigation threatening to shoot michelle obama. >> reporter: the secret service is investigating. sources told me that an officer overheard the comment and told a lieutenant in the department. the d.c. police officer is in hot water. according to police and the secret service, the comment was made during wednesday morning's roll call in the special operations division. an officer overheard the alleged threat. d.c. police chief told me there

is conflicting information about what the officer said. internal affairs will get to the bottom according to the washington post, the officer allegedly said he would shoot the first lady and then pulled out a picture of the gun he said he would use on his phone. tourists are concerned about this allegation. >> i'm very concerned. >> there should be some type of disciplinary action. >> reporter: the department placed the officer on administrative duties. >> well, it's horrible that anybody would threaten our first lady. especially a metropolitan police officer. >> reporter: the police union chief won't comment. he says this is a criminal investigation. police won't release the name of the officer. outside the white house, i'm shamari stone, news 4. >> mayor gray accepts an award in public amid growing calls for his resignation. but then the mood changed from outside the wilson building as the mayor stands firm vowing to continue to work for the city. erica? >> well, doreen, it has been

after a report of a suspicious device. sources tell nbc news someone found pieces of cut wires in one of the bathrooms. as a precaution, the entire plane had to be searched. right now, it's on the ground at j.f.k. in a remote part of the airport. >> a cleaning solution sparked a hasmat square. flight 709 was making a lay over at b.w.i. when a flight attendant suddenly became ill. 134 passengers were evacuated and a flight attendant was taken to the hospital. no one else on the plane had any symptoms. passengers were put on another plane and continued to chicago. >> some people have been allowed back into a riverdale apartment complex after safety issues caused the building to be condemned. the tower was hit hard by the june 29th storm and deemed unsafe this morning after new problems were uncovered. prince george's county officials

charlottesville. we have a few warm spots, but nowhere where we were this time last week. here's the rain just down to our south and west. this rain is trying to make its way our way. so we're watching two things now. we're watching the rain and those temperatures. they will be going up. the chances of rain will be increasing. the etemperatures, i'll have it all coming up in just a couple moments. >> joe paterno once symbolized all that was right in college sports. but now his legacy is tarnished after an internal report shows he helped cover up allegations of child sex abuse against assistant coach jerry sandusky for more than a decade. nbc 4's chris gordon reports. >> reporter: former f.b.i. director louis freeh's investigation including legendary football coach joe paterno failed to protect

against jerry sandusky harming children over a decade. that they had a kalas and shocking disregard for the victims and they were concerned more about bad publicity for the unit. . >> the most powerful men at penn state failed to take any steps for 14 years to protect the children who sandusky victimized. >> reporter: the report says when mike mcqueary reported a 2001 incident, three of the school officials were ready to report it to authorities. but coach joe paterno stopped them. >> could it be construed as obstruction of justice? conspiracy? aiding and abetting? or a cover up? >> those are all legal conclusions which i'm not prepared to make. the evidence clearly shows in our view an active agreement to conceal. >> reporter: penn state has already implemented most of the changes recommended by this report.

george went out with friends around 11:00 on sunday night in fairmount heights. a light colored crown vic did a u-turn to follow them. then, someone in the car started shooting and hit wamer in the back twice. he was just a block away from home. >> i was shake iing, little joe little joey? say something to me, you know. do you hear me talking to you? he was just not responding to none of that. >> george wanted to be a barber when he grew up and was already working to learn the trade. police are still looking for the shooter. >> people in chevy chase are being told to keep a look out for a fox. last night, a man says he was bitten by a fox on turner lane. there were also reports of a dog being attacked by a fox. there have always been foxes around and usually they leave people alone. >> they live in the creek down here. and they have been around.

. talk about a close call. a toddler in england came within millimeters of a potentially life-threatening situation. two-year-old wren bowl was drawing when she tripped over a stair gate and a pencil went through her eye socket and into her skull. it took surgeons four hours to remove it. the pencil missed two major blood vessels with the tip pressing against a third. amazingly, she is not expected to have any lasting damage from this. >> we're still more than two weeks away now from the london cams. but there's already controversy with the u.s. olympic team.

the uniforms from ralph lauren are red, white and blue but made in china. that last part has several members of congress outraged tonight. senate majority leader said the uniform should be thrown into a pile and burned. the u.s. olympic committee says it's proud to have an iconic american company like ralph lauren as a sponsor. an international crime ring busted at a local nail salon. police raided this star nail salon arresting five nail technicians and leading them away in handcuffs. customers in the middle of their manicures were forced to the floor as they moved in on liquid gold. tide detergent. >> tell me what it was like? >> it was nightmare on elm street. you'd think it was a play or something. >> investigators say the women bought stolen products like tide detergent, razor blades and

fragrances and resold them in vietnam. they're even accuse ed mixing i with water and increasing their profts. >> the one that got away is making a much better story than the fish who one woman tried to reel in. take a look. [bleep]. >> yeah, that was a bull shark that jumped ouft of the water and stole the fish right off her line. she was on a pier near myrtle beach. this was her first fishing experience and maybe her last. not quite the relaxing trip she was looking for. the bull shark is believed to be 4-6 feet long. >> i missed what they said. did you catch that? >> holy! >> that was it. >> that's exactly what all of us would say if we got that close to a big old shark.

>> and that was right off the dock. you know they've probably been swimming there earlier in the day. i don't think they're going in that water any time soon. >> of course, they may never go fishing again. >> ruined for life. >> nice night out there, one of the last ones for a little while, huh? >> i think today was just absolutely spectacular. obviously, i got to enjoy it with our backyard weather out there. really, the weter could not have been better today. but we said it a little bit earlier, could have been the 6:00 news, could have been the 5:00. we did say all good things must come to an end. this nice streak of weather is going to come to an end tomorrow. we sue a high temperature of 88 degrees after a low of 72 degrees. temperatures a little bit below average. chance of rain over the next couple of days? yes. another heat wave in the works? yes. and this next one not going to be quite as hot as the one we just went through. but still going to be quite hot out there. right now, 80 degrees.

very warm for this time of night. kind of what we expect in the month of july in the washington, d.c. area. temperatures around the rest of the region. 72 in culpepper. storm 4 radar. what do you notice here? well, you notice a few showers down around charlottesville. we are starting to see some showers trying to make their way in towards our area from the south and west. the clouds have already moved in. the clouds have been here for the last couple of hours. but notice the rain out to the west. the models i've been looking at, trying to keep this rain out of our region. it's getting a lot closer. i wouldn't be surprised if we didn't see a few showers as we make our way through the night tonight. and we still have a chance for a few showers early tomorrow morning. tomorrow, we're not going to see a whole lot of rain. we've got that rain out to our west. over the next few hours, we'll see high pressure dominate. that's going to help keep the atmosphere on the dry side. still seeing the rain out to the

west in through the mountains with a flow that is out through the gulf of mexico. we're going to see that heat increase over the next couple of days. high pressure moves off the coast. saturday, much more humid, a little bit warmer and a good chance of some rain. we need the rain, we really, reelly do. it looks like saturday has a good chance of seeing that rain. not a wash on saturday, but we will see some scattered thunderstorms. mostly cloudy. temperatures 66-74 degrees. tomorrow afternoon, mostly cloudy and cooler. a 30% chance of somehows. most of those to the west. so temperatures tomorrow will be about 3-5 degrees cooler than where they were during the day today. on saturday, back up to 90 degrees. and then on sunday, we really start to see that heat moving in. 93 degrees on sunday. 95 on monday. tuesday, a high of 95. and 96 on wednesday. it does look like we'll see a chance of showers just about each day.

finally tonight, a funeral home hoping to offer an extra shot of comfort with some coffee. the robinson funeral home down in easley, south carolina is starting construction on a new coffee shop called the coffee corner.
