good afternoon. i'm wendy rieger in for pat lawson muse. >> i'm jim handily. it took close to 1 hu00 firefighters to knock down this fire in burtonsville. 17 people had to be rescued from the flames. the fire broke out this morning at woodlake apartments on castle boulevard. megan mcgrath has our story. >> when i woke up i looked out the window and the building was a ball of flames. all i seen was black smoke. >> reporter: it was a fast-moving fire. >> it was filled with toxic, black smoke. >> reporter: the flames spread so quickly that many couldn't get out of their apartments. tim which isly watched horrified as family friends trapped on a balcony waited for rescue. >> felt helpless because i couldn't help them because they were screaming and yelling and smoke was pouring all over the place. it was awful. i'm telling you, it was absolutely awful. >> reporter: but firefighters were able to help.

in all, they pulled 17 people out of the burning building. >> it was chaotic and she was screaming and it was just the heat was so intense. >> reporter: it's too early to pinpoint the exact cause of the fire, but investigators believe it started in the rear of the complex and rapidly spread up the wall to the roof helped along by the building's vinyl siding. >> the vinyl siding off gasses when it burns. it's kind of like vapors that you would see off of a gasoline can and those vapors actually ignite. >> reporter: there were minor injuries, bumps, bruises and cuts, but nothing serious. in montgomery county, megan mcgrath, news 4. >> police canvassed an area in montgomery county where a man sexually assaulted a woman. he attacked a woman while she was wonninging her dog at the green farm conservation park in gathersburg. this morning officers handed out flyers to runners in the area

hoping this information would lead to an arrest. >> there is a description of the suspect. he was armed with a knife. there's also the phone number to the major crimes division, 240-773-5070. detectives are looking for people to call them and provide them with any information if they believe they know anything about the suspect or the crime. >> again, if you have any information, that's montgomery county police. a suspicious device found on a delta flight from new york to madrid has been declared not dangerous. flight 126 left new york's jfk airport around 8:00 last night and it returned an hour later after a passenger found strange wires in the bathroom. all 200 passengers were evacuated and the bomb squad determined the wires were non-explosive. a spokesperson for the airline says the aircraft was diverted out of an abundance of caution. the plane resumed its flight early this morning. police in rosel park, new jersey, are hoping this video serves as a warning about the

dangers of drunk driving. they say this driver was drunk when he slammed into a pole late last night. amazingly, he only suffered minor injuries and no one else was hurt and police did arrest him and charged him with dwi. president obama is spending today and tomorrow campaigning in virginia. the commonwealth used to be reliably republican, but virginia voted for mr. baum in the last election and he wants to keep it that way. republican candidate mitt romney is countering while raising some doubts among the military. here's steve handelsman. >> president obama is campaigning for two days in virginia where he made history in 2008. the first democrat to win virginia in generations. if he does it again this year he could lose swing states like florida and ohio and still win re-election and he demanded tax breaks could be the same for everyone except the wealthy.

>> the republicans disagree with me on this and mr. romney disagrees with me on this. if you say you want to bring down the deficit, but you're not willing to let tax cuts lapse for the top 2%, it tells me you're not serious about deficit reduction. >> to help the president, former president clinton pressured mitt romney to release tax returns that might show romney shielded income overseas. >> the voters cannic ma up their own mind about whether they think it's a good thing to -- for a person who wants to be president to minimize his own tax liability by putting the money in overseas tax shelters. >> team romney fired back. >> when they want to talk about bank accounts let's talk about bank accounts and let's talk about the bank accounts of the american worker who right now is trying to make ends meet. >> romney himself charged in a letter to the president printed by virginia's largest paper. your insistence on slashing our military to pay the tab for your irresponsible spending could shut the doors on factories and

shipyards and potentially shutter virginia military bases. a tough fight for a state that could be key in november. virginia polls put the president ahead by a bit. today's national poll by pugh research finds romney falling behind on the issue of who would be the best on the economy. i'm steve handelsman, news 4. secretary of state hillary clinton says she is outraged at reports of a new civilian massacre in syria. there are reports that 200 men, women and children in a small farming village were killed by syrian artillery, tanks and helicopters. clinton calls the reports credible and says they are, in her words, undisputable evidence that the regime deliberately murdered innocent civilians. she's calling on the international community to increase pressure on the syrian regime until president bashar al assad is forced from office and the political transition is

under way. j.p. morgan chase says a trading blunder cost the bank $4.4 billion just since the beginning of april. that estimate is up from the original cost which they thought was just 2 billion. the bank says all uft managers in the london office that are responsible for the trade have been fired. j.p. morgan says the loss has not affected its clients. >> hot day today and there's a chance some rain may mar your weekend. >> meteorologist verronic johnson, that's a lot to say. >> reporter: that's right. >> we could use the rain, you know? >> reporter: and we are going to get some rain. most of it will fall this weekend, so your evening, we're pretty good to go to enjoy things and we have some clouds out here right now standing out on the storm team 4 weather patio and clouds overhead and even a bit of a breeze is in the air and humidity, fairly low, too. let's take a look at the temperatures across the area.

88 degrees and warm indeed and the wind out of the east at 5 miles per hour. and the dew point temperature are cooperating and they're pretty low right now and we will see the return of a lot of humidity this weekend and we are going to see the rain and you can see the rain showing up on satellite and radar and quite a few clouds with the exception of southern maryland and calvert and st. mary's county in the clear as far as the rain goes and we're seeing those showers now and make their way northeast where they've been running out of areas of west virginia and even a few light showers at least in gathersberg and montgomery county and for the most part they'll stay toward north and west this evening. where the rain has been in the 70s, where it hasn't been in the 80s and upper 80s at that, and fredericksburg, coming in at 88 degrees. so a warm evening for us and a cloudy evening. there is the possibility of again, a few light showers up around frederick, maryland and northern areas of lowdown county

and most of us will be dry. our temperatures will fall to the 70s by 11:00 p.m. so tomorrow we're talking about the possibility of rain and it could come with thunder and we'll talk about the possibility those storms could be and how much heat we'll be getting this weekend as well as next week. >> see, folks leaving work already. >> what time is it? >> it's time to head to the parking lot. see you in a bit. >> reporter: bye, guys. >> it's not 5:00 yet. coming up, we have a head's up if you're driving or take the metro this weekend. police in maryland will be being kra cracking down on speeding motorcyclists and maryland state police will be taking part in something called operation road runner and they're targeting speeding motorcyclists along a 14-mile stretch of route 50. those guys go down -- some people go out really fast on the motorcycles, whatever they're called and they go zipping by

>> one way to escape the heat of the weekend, the box office, your favorite frozen friends are back in "ice age. continental drift." they're backing apart and manny, diego and sid are trying to find their way home, and it's difficult seeing as they're stuck on a glacier. the fourth installment is rated pg. sigourney weaver is in the supernatural thriller red light. they play skeptics who debunk, mind readers, healers and when they are confronted with blind psychic robert de niro thicks aren't exactly what they seem. >> a move beimagination is in the southern wild. a 6-year-old little girl named hush puppy has to deal with the very real devastation of a storm wiping out her home so she uses her creative mind to help save herself and her father from the cat taft officery. "the southern wild" is rated pg-13.

. >> tonight you can watch the fourth of july fireworks in gathersburg. city leaders reschedule the celebration because the utility companies use it as a staging area after the big storm. the celebration begins at 5:00 at the fairgrounds and it will feature live music and food and the celebration starts at 5:00.

>> imagine! they better go off. storms this weekend. but these are different kinds of storms that we're used to. >> run of the mill? >> yes. typical summertime type storms and right now we're not expecting severe weather. oh, my goodness, are we going to get what we got just a couple of days ago? no, but any of the storms we being get this weekend and not looking like they'll be severe and they could be producing downpours and we want to be cautious as possible out there. for today, we've had cloud cover and for today we've had just a few light showers and motor st those were the early part of the day and the wind out of the east at 5 miles per hour. i was just outside and going back outside it's really pretty comfortable. the humidity waning a little bit before starting to spike, and it is going to be a sticky weekend. that's what we're expecting right now. 87, the temperature in

baltimore, maryland and 81 degrees in leesberg. leesberg has had just a few sprinkles to come through the area, during the overnight in the area and expect light showers for 11:00 p.m. and early north and west of the area and then tonight at 5:00 and 7:00 a.m. and a few scattered, light showers really anywhere throughout the area and sun sets at 8:23 and tomorrow at 5:55. all right and we are in temperatures in the 80s and where the cloud cover has been ask where the rain has been all day long and funneling northeast ward up to west vrj virginia and elkins at 65 and 72 in charleston west virginia right now and tomorrow we're expecting heat and thunderstorms. hagerstown, frederick, right around i-81, light showers here and it's all been funneling

northward up through west virginia and it's the gulf of mexico moisture that we're expecting to get over the next couple of days and look at the rains and around houston where they've had serious flooding around 6 to nine inches and will it get shoved eastward and we have the possibility of scattered showers and looking likely for the afternoon and any storms could be strong bringing downpours and heavy rain in a short period of time and then through the evening, too. it looks like wet weather and we get a break sunday morning and back to storms sunday morning. there's the cold front and it will be slow moving and monday, early part of next week and the possiblist a few showers around the area. for us this evening, most of the area is dry. 75 to 82 degrees and the range in temperatures with cloud cover

and tomorrow, grab the umbrella, 68 to 76 to start off with the light wind and for tomorrow afternoon, 83 to 89 degrees and again, lightning possible and heavy downpours also possible tomorrow. as far as the rain goes this weekend, it's not going to be widespread where everyone will be getting wet and getting a nice soaking on their lawn, but at least we have the possibility there for this week and saturday and sunday the best chance comes saturday and we'll see another heat wave as we see 97 degrees on tuesday and maybe a degree or two higher and for now we're going with 97 and we'll take a look at the end of next week. >> will they come in late in the afternoon. any time after 2:00 and morning you shoers, and we'll get a break. just a few light showers. >> thanks, veronica. still to come, are customers being played when it comes to carnival games and they took a hidden camera to find out. a teenager who lost his arm to

three-alarm fire and it sparked at the wood lake apartments on castle boulevard. more than 100 firefighters had to work to rescue 17 people trapped inside. nobody seriously injured. here's a change on wall street today. stocks snapping a six-day losing streak following j.p. morgan's earnings reports and the dow jumping 204 points and the nasdaq had a 42-point gain and the s&p 500 wound up 22 points higher. >> summer is the season of carnival, but are those popular carnival games, are they stacked against you and your kids? >> you may have noticed some of those games are nearly impossible to win. nbc news investigative correspondent jeff rossum went undercover to expose the secrets of just how they do it. ♪ ♪ >> reporter: big prizes. >> can i get it mom? >> reporter: that seem

so springy it bounced off the rims. it seemed to happen to us at almost every shot and we went back to the carnival with the cameras out. >> jeff rossum. experts say some of these games are rigged. >> i don't know about that. i know mine not a. he says just before he walked up this boy won. people won every once in a while. >> what shape are those rims? >> oval. >> that doesn't seem fair that a round ball. >> of course, it seems guess what? every person that shot would win. >> experts say some rims are so small that even if you make the perfect shot your odds are still low. >> and you probably have a half-inch margin. >> even with the perfect shot. >> reporter: here's another game we couldn't win. seems simple, the carney told us, what you can't see is a spring behind it bouncing the

background check our employees. >> reporter: look at this game, the old carnival classic, knock over the milk bottles. here's how it should work. >> bottom two are lined up perfectly. there you go. >> reporter: so i tried it out on the indiana midway. loser! i wasn't the only loser, other customers couldn't win either and even the game operator himself couldn't knock them over and maybe we were all just off that night or maybe not. if the carney sets them up perfectly even like this and you knock them, if he takes one of these and brings it forward, even just by a little bit and all of the energy is absorbed with that one and youio don't win. that one stands. >> but of all the games we played, experts say this is the trickiest. shoot out the star. surely this guy can win.

he was a special forces sniper who can hit a nickel-sized target with ease. we brought him to the midway. >> how much is it? >> $5 a game, sir. for $5 a game he flat-out loses. >> is this game winnable? >> yes. >> those are all winners from this year? >> my buddy here is a special forces sniper and he tried it and he couldn't win. >> i've had a lot of shooters come here and can't beat this game. that tells us something. when we pulled the cameras out, are the sights regulation on the guns? he didn't want to talk. >> when i see a child hand over their allowance money to play the game, that hankers me. theft by deception. end of story. >> the carnival trade association says it has guidelines and it expects people to treat people fairly, so is this illegal? laws vary from state to state. experts say some carnivals are

better than others. they say the best advice is to play the games when you're competing against other people and there is a guaranteed winner. >> we always feel like we're competing and we keep playing. >> there's also a lot of them. you want to just have fun and be free flowing at a carnival. yea. >> get ripped off by lots of games instead of just one. >> and then get cotton candy. >> then there's there. coming up, how do you get rid of the refraj rart odor. >> and the store clerk who fat back with a bat

>> so h do you get rid of fridge or freezer odor that comes after you have a power outage? why do you get brain freeze when you eat something cold and is it safe to put sunscreen on an infant? liz crenshaw joins us with the answers from this friday's edition of "ask liz." >> this question by e-mail from a woman named ellen. eileen, actually. she ended up throwing out everything in her freezer, but she can't get rid of the smell from the spoiled food. >> the usda helped us with this answer, once you've emptied the fridge and freezer of the

spoiled food you have to wash all of the shelves with hot water and dishwasher detergent and then rinse the shelves with a tablespoon of bleach per gallon of water and you have to wash the entire inside of the freezer with hot water and baking soda, then leave the door open for about 15 minutes and let the air circulate and you may have to repeat this long process to get rid of the odor completely. it is a long process, but it will solve the problem. >> our next question comes from dan in bowie, maryland. what causes brain freeze when you eat something very cold like ice cream. wendy had it last week. >> you get that pain sort of right here. we did turn to medstar hospital to get your answer. dr. mike schlossberg said referring to ice cream headache, when it passes the soft palate in the roof of your mouth and a nerve carries that directly to the brain and that can cause

blood vessels to constrict and that leads you into the pain that you feel. the good news is ice cream headaches last 30 to 60 seconds and do not pose any medical risks. >> that 30 seconds is long when you want another bite. >> okay. >> final question from sarah in arlington, sarah plans on taking her family including her new baby to the beach next weekend and wants to know what kind of sunscreen you should use for infa infants. >> sunscreen and infants, the fda gave thus answer. it does not recommend putting sunscreen on babies at all. baby's skin is thinner than adults and it can make the baby have an allergic reaction or inflammation from the sunscreen and the fda says the best approach is to keep infants out of the sun as much as possible and if there is no way to keep that infant out of the sun, apply a small amount of sunscreen only to the areas

tables and benches in the weekend will be empty, too, why? because we're talking about more rain and heat. we'll have more rain than heat tomorrow and we'll have more heat than rain on sunday. they didn't have any rain in the big apple. take a look at this. it's the manhattan solstice. maybe you heard about it. it's the semiannual occurrence where it aligns with the east-west straits. absolutely spectacular. temperatures will be warming up and we'll be quite warm this weekend to downright hot by the middle of next week and saturday oui talking about 90 degrees and by tuesday of next week we'll be pushing into the mid to upper 90s, but boston probably getting into the low 90s, anywhere throughout the eastern half of the country and one thing you will notice is there will not be a huge area of triple digit readings. i think that those are going to stay more off to the west of our area, well off to the west.

cool in cumberland, maryland. 70 degrees, and not because of more sun, but because of less rain and then you have 91 in st. marys city, maryland. 91 the temperature because of more sun. that's why the clouds have been hanging to the west today. by tomorrow morning and 76 degrees and 69 degrees expected in packs river starting out tomorrow morning and you'll hit a high temperature upper 80s tomorrow and a little bit of sun, more rain than heat tomorrow and notice the temperature for sunday, and a 40% chance of showers and storms again. keep in mind, many of the storms can bring some downpours and pack the umbrella folks, going out this weekend. monday, your high 94 and pushing it again to 97 degrees on tuesday and wednesday of next week. back to you. >> all right. >> thanks, veronica. a few years ago some people wouldn't think of going intoa i dollar store to buy soap, mouth

this would-be robber chose the wrong convenience store to target. it all went down in falls river and security shows the video the man trying to rob the store and the man threw a plate of hot food at the suspect and grabbed a baseball bat from behind the counter and started hitting the man. the suspect took off and police haven't caught him. now to a florida teenager with a remarkable spirit. he was swimming in a river monday when he was attacked by an alligator. a split-second sacrifice saved his life. here kerry sanders. >> 911. do you have an emergency? >> yes, ma'am. a gator just got my friends in the water. >> friends who had been swimming dialed 911 just moments after they watched their buddy attacked by an 800-pound alligator. are you all right, fred? i'm calling. >> we need a -- mam? mam, we need an ambulance on the other side of the river. is he out of the gator's mouth right now? >> yes, he's out.
