aircraft. metro a has the same for their trains and that's where the problem was. it happened at about 2:00 p.m. according to metro a computer at the metro control sent went down and he could not seep where the 44 trains operating on the system were. the system that controlled signal, speed and proximity of trainers from one another was not affected. trains were stopped oust sadie nonetheless and passengers experienced delays of 20 to 25 minutes. >> chaos. trains not running due to a computer system. i've been downstairs near the tenley town university station. just alerted there is no train service due to the computer system being down. thank god they have cabs and buses still running. for us reline lying on the train system, it's puts a damper on our day, but it's saturday. >> it stopped about 25 minutes in between stations, just going from bethesda to tinleytown,

took me almost half an hour. >> reporter: normally how long does it take? >> five minutes. >> reporter: operators were notified by radio to proceed to the next station and hold until the problem was resolved about half an hour later. metro says there was never any danger. they never lost control of the trains but couldn't see exactly where they were. technicians are trying to figure out now why that happened. we're live in chinatown, back to you. >> all right, derrick. kniss has been a rough serm so far for metro. back on july 6th, the extreme heat caused this kink in the track outside the west hyattsville station. the green line train derail and people exited underground and left the tunnel through an escape patch. forcing it to revise exit operations in extreme heat and sundayly lost power near the college park station. 25 passengers inside a hot train

about 20 minutes before they began evacuating themselves. several complained of hea heat-related issues. no one taken to the hospital. stay with news 4 for the latest on shutdown and we want to see your videos if you have them and pictures. you'll see a link in the pop right-hand corner of the page. following a developing story in northwest washington this evening. a body found in an alley in a busy part of the circle. the man found unconscious around 9:30 at the corner of 17th and p streets. police pronounced him dead at the scene. they're still trying to figure out exactly how he died. d.c. police are looking for a man who robbed and sexually assault add woman at gunpoint. police say a man attacked the victim just before 5:00 this morning, thursday morning, i should say. a photo of him. this happened at 18th street southeast. the victim said the man pulled a gun, demanded money and sexually assaulted her. afterwards she said he walked her to a nearby atm and forced

her to withdraw cash. the man was last seen walking east in the 1300 block of good hope road southeast. d.c. mayor vince gray isn't staying out of the public eye even in the wake of a campaign scandal. the mayor spoke at a community art event in northeast. earlier this week a former aide pleaded guilty to running a shadow campaign for gray back in 2010. three d.c. council members called for the mayor to step down. others say calls for his resignation are premature. on the campaign trail tonight, president obama visited fairfax county trying to drum up support in the battleground state of virginia. pushing his plan for middle class tax cuts and raising questions about mitt romney's time at bain capital. brian mooar has our report. >> reporter: at rally near richmond, virginia, hundreds of people braved a downtour to see president obama in way you have seen him before.

brian mooar, nbc news, washington. let's talk a little more about this rain. meteor logist chuck bell has details on new showers moving in for us. right, chuck? >> absolutely, jim. already rain showing up literally on our city camera view. looking southbound. the main terminal at reagan national airport. looking down the anna costa rav ir, just in the distance. you can't see the bridge because of moderate rain showers inches northbound towards the city of washington. rain-cooled 79 at the airport with a south breeze, seven miles per hour. a little shower out of charles county and southern prince george's county, mostly into southern fairfax and the southern half of the district now. and her to norm just down to the south. earlier, about two hours ago from clinton to waldorf right on the prince george's county line, a lot of rain two to three inches of rain with flash flooding problems earlier. subsiding for now.

enforcement database to check if people have the right to vote. the federal government gave the state the okay to check people's names against a list of resident non-citizens. that list is maintained by the department of homeland security. the obama administration denied florida's request for months, but relent aed after a judge roomed in the plan. ship say the mistakes won't be corrected by the election in november. and joe paterno re-upped his contract in the same month of the investigation into jerry sandusky. the longtime coach reached and agreement with penn state on the amended contract last august including a $3 million bonus if paterno retired after the 2011 season. paterno was fired in november amp sandusky was charged with child sex abuse.

an update on the breaking news we brought you at the top of the newscast. metro trains are moving again tonight after a systemwide shutdown earlier this afternoon. it was a computer glitch forcing 40 trains in service to hold at stations. around 2:00 this afternoon. officials say the issue affected metro's ability to see where the trains were on the system. the trains were running again in about 45 minutes. no one injured, but passengers' patience was certainly tested. again, everything is back to normal now. the london olympics, less than two weeks away. spirits are high and so is security. now there are new questions about whether the city is, in fact, ready. nbc reports from london.
