rosenfield. dozens of trains stopped in their tracks, leaving riders con fused and angry. the third major problem on metro in less than two weeks. darcie spencer is joining us live with more on what happened today. >> i checked in with the metro official just a short time ago, they still don't know what caused this computer problem earlier today. how to understand the impact of this or the magnitude. think about it this way, an air traffic control system mondayers all the planes in the sky. this computer system monitors all the trainings on the tracks. those trains disappeared from the computer screen. for at least 45 minutes saturday afternoon metro trains were grounded, held in place after a major computer system went down. >> it took an hour to get from pentagon city to chinatown, and that's half our day already just to get to ben's chili bowl. >> reporter: the problem

affected computers at the operation control cen per it officials were unable to track the 44 trains in service. out of a concern for safety, all trains were directed to the closest station and held until the issue was resolved. officials are still trying to figure out what went wrong. >> on the weekends, it's not even worth it to take metro on the weekends unless you have a lot of time, you're transferring. yeah, we took the metro, it worked out, but we might cab it back later. >> reporter: this is the third major incident affecting metro in the last couple weeks. on julyth a heat kink caused a derailment forcing dozens to evacuate through the tunnel. there was a power outage near the college park station. rider got off the train and walked to the station in the blistering heat. the incidents do shake their confidence in the system. >> people are going to take ail turn tish methods to get around

the city. >> reporter: they hope to have the cause of the problem figured out over the next few days. in the meantime, they're apologizing to riders who were inconvenienced and frustrated today. they're working on ways to make sure this does not happen again. reporting live from woodley park, darcie spencer news 4. >> let's turn to some changes in the weather tonight. chuck bell has the details for us. >> we've had plenty of showers around for most of your saturday evening. especially if you live west or south of the immediate d.c. metro area. not a lot of rain in town, but just down the road along i-95, heavy rain earlier this evening in and around the city of fredericksburg, much of stafford and responsible ilvein ya county. they're getting quite a bit of rain right now along the west of i-95 here. you folks in fredericksburg, which had two inches or more of rain earlier this evening. more rain coming, nothing is strong or as heavy as what we

saw earlier. rumbles of thunder out here. we'll talk about all this coming our way overnight and what your suffered and monday is starting to look like. one thing, it's looking very warm for the upcoming week, jim. >> forewarned, we'll see you in a bit. police are trying to 23ig out who killed a man in the hallway an apartment building in prince georges county. someone reported gunshots around 6:40 this evening. police got there found a man's body. no word yet on the motive or the victim's identity. d.c. police are looking for a man who robbed and sexually assaulted a woman at gunpoint. police say a man attacked the victim just before 5:00 thursday morning. this is a picture of him. this happened on 18th street southeast. the man pulled a gun, demanded money and sexually assaulted her. and then he says or she says he walked her to a nearby atm and forced her to withdraw cash. the man was last seen walking east in the 1300 block of good

hope road southeast. vincent gray not shying away from public appearances this weekend in the wake of a campaign scandal. the mayor spoke today at a community art event in northeast. earlier this week, a former aide pleaded guilty to running a $650,000 shadow campaign for gray in 2010. three d.c. members have called for the mayor to step down. others say calls for his resignation are premature. turning to the race for the white house. president obama finished a two-day trip to virginia in fairfax county today. he spoke at centreville high school. he talked about the need to renew the middle class, and reiterated his call for tax cuts for people making less than $250,000 a year. he continued his attack of mitt romney's record at bain capital even after romney asked the president to apologize. >> he invested in companies that

have been called pioneers of outsourcing. i don't want a pioneer in outsourcing. >> the president's campaign has been outrageous in making the kind of charges they have. i think the kinds of attacks are beneath the dignity of the presidency. >> romney took a break from campaigning today to spend time with his family at his lakeside home in new hampshire. he will not release any more financial information beyond this year's tax returns. florida can now check a federal list of noncitizens, officials believe someone's trying to vote illegally. the list is maintained by the department of homeland security. the state's been trying to get permission to use it for months. the obama administration finally gave the okay after a judge ruled in favor of the plan. some are concerned that any mistakes on the list cannot be corrected in time for the november election. a d.c. man who spent 22 years behind bars for a crime he

didn't commit has officially been cleared. the judge signed exonerating odom yesterday. he was convicted of raping a woman back in 1981. the key piece evidence was a single strand of hair found on the victim. the fbi said it matched odom's hair on a microscopic level. new dna testing found the hair was not his. >> they sent me to hell, really. to be honest with you. they sent me straight to hell. >> the case has sparked a review of thousands of other similar cases where hair analysis was used. the fbi maintains it is sound science, but other scientists say the practice is too subjective. congress is considering national standards to try to prevent other false convictions urge coming up, major news from penn state. questions about the timing of joe paterno's final contract negotiations. and a big change to his picture on an iconic mural.

august. it included a three million dollar bonus if paterno retired after the 2011 season. he was fired in november after sandusky was charged with child sex abuse. paterno died of lung cancer in january. and penn state paid out the rest of the contract in april. sandusky was convicted on 45 counts and is awaiting sentencing. a famous mural in state college no longer has a halo above paterno's head. the artist added the halo after paterno's death, he said he felt he had to remove it after the release this week of the damning freeh report. that investigation found paterno and others knew about the allegations. instead he added a blue ribbon to paterno's lapel. sandusky has been removed from the mural. chuck will tell us about a warmup in the works. plus, the dos and don'ts of dating.
