plus, a news4 exclusive. we'll hear from a father rescued from a vicious pit bull attack in arlington. and how police are tracking your moves using your cell phone. good evening, everyone. tonight we begin with a weather alert. storm in our area once again. chuck bell has the details. >> thanks, jim. another pretty busy day in the weather department with thunderstorms this afternoon. another round possible late this evening. had a severe thunderstorm in the shenandoah valley and the mountains of west virginia as recently as 25, 30 minutes ago. fortunately the storm is losing its punch as it comes east of the blue ridge. still some thunder and lightning moving in. at the pace they're going, they could be administration it just to the south of middleburg, to the north of marshall over by the next 30 to 40 minutes. that would put it potentially with thunder and line into the downtown metro area. not long after midnight, 1:00 in the morning. we'll have a more complete check of the forecast in a few minutes. a crippling computer problem remains a mystery for metro technicians.

service is back to normal now but twice in less than 24 hours this weekend, metro was stopped on its tracks leaving riders in a state of suspended transportation. the first snafu this afternoon at 2:00 p.m. >> we were just sitting around reading books, playing with our iphones. >> it wasn't a game for many riders or metro. a glitch in the computer system in the metro rail command center left controllers blind. unable to see where trains were on the lines, or control switches remotely. 44 trains were told to go to the nearest station and wait. >> they said they were having electrical problems, and that the train will be moving. now i'm almost an hour late for work and possibly get written up. it's great. >> reporter: saturday's outage lasted about 45 minutes, only to be repeated shortly after midnight sunday for another half-hour. leaving metro technicians scrambling to try to figure out why it keeps happening. metro is stressing that the systems that keep trains spaced

at a safe distance worked fine during both incidents. >> i don't know all the details about what happened over the weekend. but we know that the staff will bring the board up to speed tomorrow so we can get to the bottom of it. >> metro declined our repeated requests for an on camera interview about the computer problem. in a statement the agency says it will have additional rail and i.t. people on hand tomorrow in case something happens during the morning commute and we'll keep an eye out for you. other news, a father attacked by two angry dogs right in front of his two children. that's what happened this afternoon in a neighborhood in arlington. news4's darcy spencer spoke exclusively with that father and his sons who saved him. darcy? >> reporter: yeah. this dog attacked victim has been in the hospital since about 4:30 this afternoon. he came home here to his house on this street just minutes ago. i was able to have a brief interview with him about this attack. here's what he had to say.

>> i just, you know, i completely lost it and the dogs attacked me to the middle of the street. i tried to get out so many times but i can't get up. i tried to avoid. the dogs, they really want to bite me from my neck. and from here they probably kill me. >> reporter: now, the victim says the attack happened right out here. he had just gotten home from the mall. he was buying a wedding gift for someone getting married tomorrow. his two sons were here. one was in the truck. one was in the house. and he is saying, their actions likely saved his life. >> my dad was right here being attacked by two dogs. >> reporter: alejandro morales is holding the croc shoe he held two two pit dogs. the act may have saved his dad's life. the dogs stopped biting. >> i don't know how i got the

croc. >> reporter: it happened in the 2,000 block of south oakland street around 4:30 in the afternoon. the man's sons tell news4, he got out of his truck and the pit bulls charged when he tried to scare them off his property. relatives say he was bitten at least a dozen times. >> i felt very bad for him. he was mauled by two pit bulls. vicious pit bulls! they were, look at their teeth. you should have seen their teeth. >> reporter: the man's younger son was asleep in the truck but woke up and yell for help. the older son in the house came out. tried to stop the attack. the dogs briefly turned on him. then he threw the shoe. >> my dad was just getting punished by a dog. i had to go do something. yeah. my little sister was crying. my brother was crying, too. >> reporter: police located the dogs nearby. one was shot when it charged after an officer. the other, taken into custody by the arlington animal welfare

league. >> they had like 14 bites, i think. one on his ear, right here, right here. he had a lot of, he bleeded a lot but i think he'll recover. >> reporter: now police do say that these two pit bulls live right here on this street. at this point, they have not been able to contact the owner of these two dogs but they do confirm that there have been previous complaints about these animals. this investigation is continuing. no charges have been filed as of yet. but they do say that is a possibility. reporting live from arlington, darcy spencer, news4. >> brave young men. thank you. the search is on tonight for a maryland man accused of shooting two people in a nail salon including the mother of his children. police are looking for tuan minh pham from beltsville. he is accused of attacking his girlfriend where she work at the hair and nail care spa in ellicott city. officers say he also shot a friend who was there to drive her home from work. according to court records, they

have two children together. she had a protective order against him and had recently filed for child support. >> out of the nail salon, he was like speed walking and his shirt is covered in blood and he has a gun in his hand. i look at his gun. oh, my god, he has a gun. >> both victims are in critical condition tonight. pham was last seen driving a gold or tan four door honda accord with this maryland license plate. 2 ak 0291. if you see him or you see the car, call howard county police. in prince george's county, an attempted robbery ended with one victim. accidentally killing another. and the masked men there are still on the loose. news4's derrick ward has the story. >> i prayed for protection but it makes me want to buy a gun. >> reporter: that's the reaction at the neighborhood that left one of the would be victims dead. it was almost half past midnight, according to prince george's county police. the victim was among a group standing around a parked car in

the intersection of oak street and farmingdale avenue when they were approached by three masked men who were armed. the robbers ordered the group to the ground. they complied but police say a female who was behind the wheel of the car became frightened and tried to drive off, running over one of the men the robbers had ordered to the ground, killing him. by the light of day, all that remain are the markings made by investigators who chronicle the crime scene and the shock of neighbors. >> it is a close-knit communicate so everybody knows everybody. really unfortunate that these people who came to rob people. >> reporter: the robbers ran away after the victim was run over. apparently getting away with nothing but what they did take away was a sense of safety that long time residents had. >> what can you do? where can you go? >> reporter: residents say it highlights the need for more lighting in the neighborhood, although this crime happened right under a street light. news4. out west tonight, firefighters bracing for another dave high temperatures and strong winds as they continue to battle a wildfire in northern california. the so-called robbers fire is

threatening 170 homes now. firefighters say it is burning in an area with extremely treacherous terrain. about 3.5 square miles have gone up in flame. officials estimate the fire is about 20% contained tonight. president obama is making no apologies tonight for his attacks on mitt romney's record at bain capital. the president has managed to paint romney as a jobs outsourcing pioneer. romney says he wasn't at bain when the outsourcing occurred. the republicans are calling it a successful attempt at keeping attention away from the economy. >> independent voters don't care about tax returns and bain capital. they care about getting the greatest country on earth out of debt, back to work. >> romney is expected to try to brush off the personal attacks and start focusing on the lackluster economy. we should find out if they will call lawmaker back to session for a special session on

. tonight jason kidd is pleading not guilty to a driving charge after running his suv off the road. police say kidd was arrested just before 2:00 a.m. on long island. officers say his cadillac escalade hit a pole and went

into the woods. kidd was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and then charged with misdemeanor dwi. kidd is an 18-year veteran of the nba and he recently signed with the new york knicks. a police investigation is underway after someone threw tacks on the road during the tour de france. no one was hurt but about 30 cyclists had to stop and change their tires or switch bikes during the last leg of the 14th stage today. in a show of good sportmanship, the main pack slowed down to let those cyclists catch back up. investigators are looking into whether the tacks were intended to hurt the cyclists. your cell phone may not be as private as you think. law enforcement authorities are many of us without our knowledge and cell phone carriers know all about it. nbc's scott budman has more. >> reporter: we all walk around with our cell phones. they help us connect. but little did we know, even when our phones are tucked away in our purses or pockets, we're still connecting and being

tracked. every seven seconds, data from our phones is sent to cell towers, even when our phones are off. and what happens to that information? >> this information can tell police basically anything they want about the person. >> reporter: according to trevor tim of the electronic frontier foundation, law enforcement agencies are asking for gps contacts, and other data, and cell phone carriers like at&t and verizon are giving it away without your permission. >> there is actually what's called cell phone tower dumps where they're actually going after one person. but they end up getting information on everybody who had been around a cell phone tower during a certain amount of time. so even though they're only investigating one person, they now have information on hundreds or thousands of people. >> reporter: why are cell phone carriers giving your information away without even a subpoena? t

bruised. it involves chico polyhigh chairs that are designed for tray storage. the consumer product safety commission says children are getting hurt. you will recall they were sold online, babies are us, toys "r" us, bye-bye baby, toy factory and chopco stores. chuck is back now with a word on some of those storms moving through the area. any time you have the thunderstorms, it happened two days row. we finished off our afternoon thunderstorm with of all thing, another beautiful rainbow. almost in the exact same location and almost at the exact same time of day as yesterday's rainbow. so as i was joking on the morning show this morning, we have truly maximized our rainbow potential this weekend. hopefully you had a chance to get outside and see either yesterday or today's rain bows.

probably not going to have a rainbow chance tomorrow or into most of the upcoming week. as high heat and human are coming back our way. and fewer storm chances. that's what you need to get the rainbow chances. 81 at 11:00 at night. 71 for the dew point. so 74% humidity. a wind out of the west at five miles per hour. 80s inside the urban center. 81 still in annapolis. still, a rain-cooled middle 70s for the most part across northern virginia. your monday planner, off to a mild start. nearly 80 degrees by 8:00 in the morning. 96 degrees by 1:00 in the afternoon. high heat returns tomorrow. and only isolated thunderstorm chances tomorrow. the temperature back into around 93 degrees by 6:00 p.m. there is this next batch of rain showers that did have associated weather with it between 10:00 and 10:30. fortunately it has diminished, at least for now. thundershowers coming through front royal. they're inching toward the western side of the d.c. metro

area or about the next 30 to 60 minutes they could be it in. almost on top of the capital beltway. there is another batch of thundershowers across the mountains of west virginia that will bear watching into the late overnight hours. it is part of a very weak trough of low pressure. it is oriented along that line. as that line sags down to our south tomorrow, it will take the rain chances essentially away with it. that will be one nice thing. a couple of late night rumbles cannot be ruled out. most everything should be out of here by 2:00, 3:00 in the morning if not sooner than that. off to a stuffy and sticky start on monday and it won't get any prettier as tuesday and wednesday move in. the high heat starts to build in here. i think tuesday will be the worst of it from a temperature standpoint. and then the rain chances come back on wednesday. if you're headed down to the beach, good decision. a chance some showers tomorrow. and that hot even at the beaches. but 78 degrees water temperature. that will feel nice. overnight, storm between 1:00 in the morning. warm and humid to start.

temperature in the low to mid 70s. then tomorrow, more sunshine into today. warmer today. we made 96 today. we'll do about 97 or 98 tomorrow. as a result of the high pressure building in, fewer thunderstorms to contend with. that will be nice. boy, will it be hot around here. 97 tomorrow. 99 on tuesday. 98 wednesday. then back down to 92 thursday with the showers and thunderstorms around. and then settling out into average late july weather as we head into next weekend. if it will be 97, 98, at least it is a tuesday, wednesday, when most people are at work. >> it is like this. they're calling the troops at the london olympics. why a miscalculation has the british military rushing to draft more soldiers. draft moif you want less, you can always have less,

. the british military could be drafting more troops to help with security for the london olympics. the british government says it hasn't ruled out that possibility. it is because of private contractor in charge of security underestimated the number of guards needed for the games. there are 10,000 on hand but experts say there need to be more. the british defense secretary insisted the entire situation is under control. and people across the pond are starting to flip out about the 2012 olympics. literally. today 36 acrobats attached to these bungi cords jumped off the
