loudoun county and others, they'll be coming down the 270 here. the rain chances are increasing over the next couple of hours but they won't last all that long. your forecast right now, 98 now. 92 by this evening. had only .02. we're about seven inches behind in rainfall for the year to date so far. these hit-or-miss showers today are not going to help much. tomorrow if you're waiting for a cooling rain shower tomorrow, you might have to wait until wednesday to get it. might not be much help for it tomorrow. temperatures tomorrow soaring to near 100 degrees. so hot and continued dry for tomorrow. an update on the storm progress and a look at the four-day forecast in a few minutes. back now into the air conditioned studio. >> you can come back in, chuck. all right. it's official. most of the country is suffering through drought conditions, so

severe some are worse off than the dust bowl years of 1930s. details now from chris clackum. >> reporter: this confirm as what federal forecasters now say. nearly 60% of the country is in some stage of drought condition. >> the heat has been a big factor, the lack of rainfall combined with that have created a tremendous deficit in moisture across a vast swath of the lower 48 states. >> reporter: it's so dry more than 1,000 counties in 26 states have been declared disaster areas. the biggest such declaration ever. mostly farmers are feeling it for now. more than half of the corn crops are in trouble and little left to harvest. >> it's probably going to covet more in fuel and oil. >> the soybeans, they're a little more resilient than the corn. if we can get some rain, they'll come out and bloom again.

but the corn won't. the corn is done. >> reporter: it's already threatening to drive food prices to record levels because corn has an impact on 75% of what's sold at the supermarket. >> that doesn't mean that the price at the supermarket is going to go up tomorrow, but it is going to go up next week, and it's going to continue to rise for a number of months. >> reporter: by a slight margin, the current drought actually covers more area than the dust bowl-era drought of 1936. it's bad, forecasters say, but not as bad as back then. >> we're not as bad as the dust bowl era or the 1950s yet. >> reporter: it calls for the drought afflicting the midwest to eventually worsen. chris clackum, nbc news. a developing story out of florida today in the case of george zimmerman, the man charged in the shooting death of trayvon martin.

a woman has told prosecutors that zimmerman molested her over a ten-year period, starting when they were young children. the woman identified as witness 9 says the abuse began when she was 6, he was 8. there are no police reports made or any criminal charges filed. the information was in records released by a special prosecutor. those records also included 120 recorded jail phone calls made by zimmerman. he has made no comment on the allegations. now to presidential politics. after a weekend of trading attacks over mitt romney's tenure at bain capital and his refusal to release more tax documents, both candidates were on the road today. from louisiana romney focused the nation's struggling economy. president obama campaigned in the swing state of ohio. jennifer johnson has the latest. >> reporter: out of washington and on the campaign trail in the key battleground state of ohio

president obama promised to cut key taxes and -- >> we don't need a president who plans to ship jobs overseas. i want to give incentives to you, american people to create american jobs, making american goods. >> reporter: romney attended a fund-raiser in louisiana. the issue of whether he'll lease more tax returns won't go away. some are encouraging mitt romney to just do it. others say the focus should stay on the struggling economy. >> americans aren't concerned about mitt romney's tax returns. they're concerned about their tax returns and the new taxes that obama is putting on the american people. >> reporter: romney is pushing the same in his web ad. people are struggling for work as unemployment sticks to 8.2%. the obama campaign is also not letting romney off the hook on bain capital. filings show romney was the sole owner and ceo of the private equity firm until 2002, but

romney says he had nothing to do with bain's dealings that led to bankruptcy, layoffs, and outsourcing in 1999. he says it's just another failed tactic for the pro. >> things aren't going in the right direction. no wonder he wants to change the subject. >> reporter: portman, a possible running mate. mitt romney will go to ohio himself on wednesday and president obama plans more campaigning this week in another key swing state, florida. in washington, jennifer johnson, "news 4." anthony weiner reportedly wants to return to politics a year after stepping down for a sexting scandal. the former democratic congressman from new york resigned after admitting to sending lewd photos of women, but according to the "new york post," he still has $4.5 million in campaign funds. the post reports he's seriously considering a run for new york city mayor. he ran in 2005 but lost in the

primary. joe paterno's family says it will do an independent investigation following last week's scathing report of the penn state sex abuse scandal. the family says the late football coach did not knowingly conceal sex abuse by jerry sandusky. the former fbi agent said he helped cover up the abuse to avoid bad publicity against the school. the family vehemently disagree with some of the accusations and assertion. a jury convicted sandusky last month of abusing ten boys over a 15-year span. a man attacked by two pit bulls in front of his own children is speaking out today about that terrifying ordeal. that attack happened yesterday afternoon here along south oakland street in arlington. max fernado said he got out of his truck and the pit bulls charged. when he tried to scare them off of his property, he said he was

bitten at least a dozen times. that's when his son ran out of the house and threw a shoe at the dog. >> somehow i managed to throw it at it. >> the dogs really want to bite me from my neck. that's when they came here. if they came from here, they'd probably kill me. >> police shot one of the dogs when it charged the officer. the other was taken into custody by the arlington animal welfare league. more problems on metro following a computer glitch that halted train service dwight over the weekend. the dupont station had to be shut down twice this this morning because two separate trains shut down. at one point metro kept passengers from entering the station to clear out heavy congestion inside. meanwhile metro is trying to find out what caused the computer glitch over the weekend. coming up at 5:00, darcy spencer will have more including reactions from lawmakers on

federal safety guidelines for metro. nationals alzheimer's outfielder bryce harper is already one of the most polarizing players in baseball, and it appears he's in the middle of yet another controversy. in yesterday's game against the marlins, miami manager ozzie guillen accused harper of having too much pine tar on his bat. he shows guillen the bat. guillen yells at harper and shakes a bat at him. at the end of the game, he shrugged and said guillen is trying to help his team. it's not unusual for a spectator to catch a ball, but watch this. a fan managed to catch a ball between his legs while jug ling drinks. look at him. the ball never hit the ground. he couldn't believe it either. it happened over the weekend at the toronto/cleveland game. the ball landed, took a giant

"anger management" to the uso. sheen says he will donate a minimum of $1 million or as much as 1% ends up being. the money will be put toward an entertainment facility for seriously injured military troops in bethesda, maryland. they say this is the largest single contribution from an individual ever. it's not that often that you hear boos at a bruce springsteen concert, but that's exactly what happened this weekend after concert officials pulled the plug on an impromptu set featuring springsteen and none other than paul mccartney. this is one fan's video of that concert. organizers cut after the singers' microphones after they were wrapping up their show. they apparently went over the sound curfew by one hour. residents there had complained about the noise in the past. >> you call that noise? >> do you call it noise? what's going on at "american

idol"? the death of sylvester stallone's oldest son. and a lot of news out of the comic-con festival over the weekend in san diego. here to update us is sean robinson of "access hollywood." first let's talk about "american idol." two judges out. now, what is going on there, shawn. >> i tell you i talked to jennifer lopez a couple months ago and i asked her was she going to return to "american idol". she was kind of wavering. i'm not really, really sure. i've got a lot going on in my personal life and i want go on tour. well, now she's like 99.9% out at this moment. i mean jennifer lopez is saying she's got so many other things going on. also the dynamics of the show in her mind have definitely changed and how it will affect the show later on.

for example, steven tyler out. we know he's gone. there's question whether randy jackson is actually going to be coming back to the judge's table. he wasn't really clear when photographers caught him coming outside of l.a.x. he said, hey, i'd love to stay in louisiana, but we're not sure he will be coming back to the judge's table. he may go on to a different role. and jennifer lopez says the dynamic of the show have changed, i'm not really sure. i love them, they love me, but the dynamics of the show is really changed. here's the rumor. the producers may not have given her the salary increase she wanted. right now she's make $15 million a year, pretty good, i would say. the report says she wanted $2 million more. now, the ratings for the second season of this judges' panel, steven tyler, jennifer lopez, randy jackson, ratings fell 25% to 30%, and so the producers are

intimidation that ultimately led to rape. there are 28 charges again him including rape and aggravated sexual assault. ford issues a recall today affecting certain escape crossover vehicles. the company is recalling more than 8,000 2013 escape suvs. that's because there's carpet padding that could get in the way of the brakes. they say dealers can remove it and replace it with a console padding free of charge. they'll start contacting customers next week. >> there's more to come. up next, why a change in the way you walk could be an early sign of a devastating disease. a

hiv. it was approved in 2004 but now it's been approved to people who do not have hiv or aids but have partners who do. taking it daily and practicing safe sex can greatry reduce the risk of acquiring aids or hiv. changes in the way you walk could be an early sign of memory decline in the brain. while slowing down is expected with age, researchers in switsz found a pronounced slowdown in walking pace could indicate cognitive decline. they studied more than 1,100 elderly adults, those with alzheimer's disease walked much slower than those with mild cognitive impairment. experts say the changes the in the way you walk may lead to early detekds of alzheimer's. >> we may be able to catch cognitive decline at an earlier stage by focusing in addition to

team and athletes from dozens of other nations arriving today, heathrow airport is expecting some 240,000 passengers over just a 24-hour period. now, that easily breaks the previous record of 234k at europe's largest airport. so far there's been no report of major losses of gear at least despite everything from horses to pole vaulting poles to mountain bikes and more. heathrow has put on an extra 1,300 volunteers, it says, to help athletes to get to where they're going. now, there has been one reported snafu. the u.s. 400 meters champion and also the defending silver med medalist tweeted from his bus that was supposed to take him and his team to the athletes' village. that's normally about an hour's drive but he said from his bus that it had been lost for more than four hours. >> they would have had opportunity to see more of the city than they might have otherwise have done.

video of a deadly landslide in british columbia last week. look at that. a news crew was on the water covering one landslide when another landslide happened. the crusade they were standing on land right in that spot just minutes before the landslide happened. the royal canadian mounted police say it appears the landslide trapped four people underneath the degree. last night authorities pulled one body from the rubble. three people remain unaccounted for. cameras were rolling as three people inside this suv became trapped in fast-moving floodwaters. heavy rains flooded out streets, dumping more than two inches of

rain over tucson on sunday. firefighters there couldn't get to the vehicle because the water was so swift. crews tossed life jackets to the people inside and eventually brought all three of them to safety. they walked away from this unharmed. contestants try to scoop the competition at an ice cream-eating contest near los angeles. these women dug in hard, looking to cream their competitors, whipping through their bowls of ice cream. it's all part of national ice cream day, and a fund-raiser for children's charity. there were six different heaps of the frozen treats with the winner in each category. she looks like those hot dog-eating contest people don't they. >> you don't enjoy it when you're eating like that. you can't savor the flavor. a mother fighting a flesh-eating bacteria speaks out

just two months ago a new mom in south carolina was in critical condition fighting a flesh-eating bacteria that nearly took her life. today after multiple surgeries she's in rehab and could go home as early as this week. jay gray has her story. >> reporter: her steps are measured her movements labored. >> i'm okay, glad to be alive. i mean i have my moments of pain and discomfort. >> reporter: but lana kirkendall is determined to fight through the pain often, even flashing a smile during her difficult rehabilitation. >> she is just a tough cookie. >> reporter: that more than two months ago very nearly crumbled. in early may just days after

giving birth to twins lana noticed a spot on the back of her leg. at first she was concerned wit as blood clot. instead doctors discovered it was a rare flesh-eating infection. >> if you sit long enough, they grow so rapidly that you can actually see the skin change in front of your eyes. >> reporter: surgeons had to move fast, remove muscle tissue and skin trying to save her limbs and her lives. >> lana had at least 18 operations over a 21-day period to remove the bacteria and necrotic tissue that the bacteria chose to inflict, which is really extraordinary. >> but so is their patient, fighting not only if herself but her twins, ian and abigail. >> i was just glad to see them, very glad, and i just wanted to hold them and get to know them. >> her husband, her friends, even lana will tell you that holding those babies, the bond keeps giving her the strength to

good afternoon, everybody. temperatures soared into the mid-90s. we're seeing the bub ing up of showers. luckily our severe weather threat is greatly diminished compared to what it was. temperatures well into the 90s in many, many spots. as you can see showing up on radar, one thundershower here in central parts of montgomery county. others in parts of prince george's. waldorf and la plata. you folks are going to get a shower here. fredericksburg, hard hit, two time over the weekend. this quick little shower aiming right at fredericksburg but it won't bring anywhere near the amount it brought in. this is coming straight down the potomac. bethesda, potomac, great falls, be ready for a 10- or 15-minute rainfall. unfortunately we won't be getting much in the w
