[ jim perdue ] we believe in a better chicken. good morning, everyone. welcome to news 4 midday, i'm barbara harrison. it's tuesday, july 17th, to 12. we begin with breaking news from charles county this morning. police are on the scene of a family shooting in the 3600 block of seagrate court. melissa mollet is there and has more. >> good morning, barbara. at this point we know one person is dead and two people are in critical condition. investigators still out here on the scene six hours into this now. take a look here behind me. this is the home. the yellow home behind me where it all happened. police still inside. the front door open and they're in there gathering evidence and

trying to determine what really happened here. here is what we know. at 5:00 this morning, a woman inside the home called 911 for an assault in progress and when officers arrived they found her and the man the homeowners collapsed in the road in front and the man and woman are flown to area hospitals and listed in critical condition right now. when officers were out here, there were some indication to them that the shooter was still inside the house, they brought in a hostage negotiator and neighbors were warned to stay inside their homes, as well. officers never made contact with the person inside. they entered the house around 9:15 this morning and they found a 33-year-old man dead in an upstairs bedroom. a revolver was found inside. what do we know about the relationship between the two people who were shot and the man who shot himself. >> the shooter was the step

different son of the male victim. >> do we know if this shooter has been in trouble in the past and has this been an issue before? >> i'm not aware of any incidents at this house, in terms of any other history, something investigators are researching. >> police say the shooter did live inside the home with his mother and stepfather. it does look like the woman will make it. we do not have any additional information on her husband's condition. investigators are inside gathering evidence trying to determine what exactly happened here early this morning. live in waldorf, maryland, melissa mollet. >> we'll continue to follow the story. thank you, melissa. now, to the extreme heat. it's already nearly 90 degrees in much of our area. tom kierein joins us with the first forecast. tom, good morning to you. >> good morning, barbara. it just looks hot. that was a live view from our hd city camera and on this tuesday, we have to call this torrid

tuesday. already climbing into the 90s, reagan national now at 92 degrees just past 11:00 in the morning. much of virginia into the 90s. look at warrington, they are up to 94 right now and montgomery, arlington, fairfax, prince george's county right near 90 degrees and for the rest of the afternoon, just stay inside, stay with us here at nbc 4 and stay cool unless you absolutely have to go outside. just stay in the ac. going to be up near 100 degrees by mid-afternoon feeling maybe like 105 when you factor and tomorrow, if you're going to imagine, it can get even more humid with the heat, we'll talk heat indexes near 110. i'll have details, though, on a break coming our way. that's coming up in just a few minutes. barbara? >> tom, we'll see you in a few minutes. the d.c. government is trying to help out a number of public pools throughout the

district remain open later than usual today and tomorrow. other pools will be closed altogether. trash will also be picked up an hour earlier than usual tomorrow. new today the potomac nationals announce they'll build a new baseball stadium at the potomac town center right off i-95 in prince william county. they join the potomac nationals announcing the partnership development. the project includes a 1,500 space parking garage that commuters can use during the day. drivers will have access to the hov lanes from the garage and the project still needs environmental approval and a public will get a chance to weigh in, as well. the new stadium is expected to be completed in 2014. the metro bridge being built over the beltway in tyson's corner is finally finished. crews installed a final section of the aerial guideway just minutes ago. these are live pictures from chopper 4.

the 380 ton span is part of metro's silver line and eventually take riders into tyson's. phase one of the silver line is still scheduled to open late next year. it will go all the way to restin. also today metro is holding a talent audition. the agent is looking for singers, dancers, musicians and poets to perform live in metro stations. the auditions will happen tonight from 5:00 to 7:00. selected artists will perform for free at a assigned metro stations later this month through september and also get invited to perform as part of the music on the maul program. let's see how things are moving on the roads. we'll check in for our first check of mid-day traffic. >> watching a system in northwest, downed wires right now have macomb treat blocked in northwest. please, be aware of that. and plan an alternate route. let's head over to the beltway. still seeing big delays and this one going on for some time now.

i think the new traffic pattern still slowing you down and outer loop of the beltway at van dorn and slow to telegraph road and if you try to get to the wilson bridge from this area, it will take 15 minutes to do so as you drive 25 miles per hour, very slow. barbara, back over to you. >> you look wonderfully summary today. thanks a lot, see you in a few minutes. new from overnight. d.c. police are searching there the person who shot a man along eighth street in northwest washington. someone shot the man in the chest just before midnight and the victim was taken to the hospital. he is expected to make a full recovery. no word on a motive for that shooting. a dozen families are out of their homes this morning after a fire through an apartment complex in woodbridge. the two alarm fire sparked around 9:00 last night along gym stone drive. crews say they arrived to heavy smoke and fire. some residents were jumping from their balconies to escape the flames. one firefighter did suffer minor injuries. firefighters are still investigating what caused that

fire. well, a new call for d.c. mayor vincent gray to take action in the deepening scandal of the 2010 election. graham told news 4, time to explain this role in the scandal and answer some questions. three other council members have asked for gray to resign. right now graham says he will hold off on calling for the mayor's resignation. gray has not responded to the suggestion that he will provide more details on his role in the campaign finance scandal. meanwhile, martin o'malley now says there's a better than 50/50 chance he'll call a special session to discuss gambling in his state. house speaker michael bush to talk about that. lawmakers will decide on a measure to bring a casino to prince george's county and legalize all table games in maryland. casino live would be bad

business for the whole state of maryland. the company's chairman says nearly half of the casino's revenue is coming from the d.c. area. he says a casino in prince george's county could be devastating for maryland live and the result would be two weak aseenoes that would generate less tax revenue and create fewer jobs. the developer of national harbor where the prince george's casino accused the company of being afraid of competition. our time is 11:08. coming up, the latest on two mass shootings, including one near the university of alabama. plus, what jada pinkett smith is tking to lawmakers about this morning on capitol hill. is there any relief in sight for drought conditions now affecting half the country? we may have some answe

sfauloing developments in a shooting this morning. police just released this surveillance video of the suspect walking through the parking lot with a gun at his side. police say at least one person is in critical condition, at

least three are in serious condition. and we're also following a developing story in canada. police are looking for the people responsible for a mass shooting that left two people dead and 19 others injured at a barbecue in toronto. a baby is among those that were injured. the child's injuries are not serious, we understand. more than 200 people were at the block party last night when the shots were fired. police say it appears more than one person fired those shots. >> this is not only unprecedented in toronto, i've been a cop for 35 years and this is the worst incident of gun violence in my memory anywhere in north america. it's, it's very shocking event. a lot of innocent people were injured. >> police say they do have a person of interest in custody and they're also looking for others who may have been involved. and new today, one of hollywood's biggest stars is on capitol hill today, but it has nothing to do with her next

blockbuster. jada pinkett smith, wife of will smith is testifying before a committee on human trafficking. earlier this year smith started an organization called don't sell bodies. to bring attention to the more than 27 million sex slaves worldwide. and today she's pushing for the trafficking victim's protection act to be renewed. >> as we look forward to the next decade, we must renew our commitment to ending the skornlg of slavery, fighting slavery doesn't cost a lot of money. the cost of allowing it to exist in our nation and abroad are much higher. it robs us of the thing we value the most, our freedom. >> smith also brought three former sex slaves with her who are now successful college students and working to fight the industry that they were once enslaved in. and right now, federal reserve chairman ben bernanke is on capitol hill. he's giving his semiannual report to the senate banking

committee today. bernanke expects the unemployment rate to come down. he says it will likely remain high for the next two years. >> given that growth is to absorb new entrance into the labor force, the reduction in the unemployment rate seems to be slow. indeed, the central tendency for participant's forecast has the unemployment rate at 7% or higher at the end of 2014. >> burr nanernanke will testify tomorrow. well, a week after the president spent a weekend in the state, first lady michelle obama is returning to virginia. mrs. obama will make two campaign stops on friday, one in charlottesville and the other in fredericksburg. and the president is on his way actually, right now, to texas where he hopes to bring a record haul at two fund-raising

stops. first visit san antonio and then a private fund-raiser at the home of an attorney. then he will fly to austin, where he will meet with donors of ostaen music hall before a a home at tom meredith. the campaign hopes to bring in more than $3.5 million, a record for the president for a single day in the state. and, meanwhile, mitt romney is visiting a swing state today with a a stop at a gas drilling service outside pittsburgh, pennsylvania, but it could be overshadowed by attention over a running mate announcement. senior romney adviser told reporters that the former governor hasn't finalized his vp pick yet, but it could come by the end of the week. the vp selection is usually made closer to the party's convention. the district could ease its building height restrictions on thursday. a congressional committee will hold a hearing into the decade's old height limit on tall

buildings. the hearing could determine if regulators could change or eliminate the building height restrictions for parts of the district. the move could help the district generate new tax revenue, however, critics say taller buildings will change the character of the district of columbia. well, storm 4 meteor also is here and we'd like to change the character for today. maybe cool things down, tom. how about that. >> i tweeted that it's so hot and i'm getting some good replies. >> can they be repeated? >> it is so hot i wish i was shoveling snow. i like that. actually, sort of trick yourself into thinking, just singing jingle bells -- >> some radio station might decide to do that, play holiday music. >> that's right, because it's already now into the 90s around the region and do what you can, think cool or just stay cool. stay in the ac or get to a pool. hey, that rhymes.

now, the pool is a great place to be. you take a dip in the cool water and it just feels great and that's a great place to be. if you absolutely have to be outside, take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water and right now 92 at reagan national. dew point upper 60s near 70. that's moderate humidity. tomorrow dew points may get to the mid-70s with this kind of heelt. that is just sweltering humidity and heat. right now, we've got a light breeze coming in out of the north and as we look at the view from space over the last few hours, nothing but hazy sunshine all across maryland, virginia and into the mountains. where at the higher elevations, it is cooler. it does help to get to a higher elevation. some of these areas in yellow are still in the upper 70s to near 80. some of the highlands and west virginia. the areas in the lighter orange, they're in the 80s and that includes most of the shenandoah valley and panhandle of west

virginia and maryland. these areas of dark orange are in the 90s from the blue ridge east across most of virginia and most of maryland and around the district and eastern shore. 92 at reagan national and we are right around 90 or so in the nearby suburbs in montgomery, arlington, fairfax and prince george's county. right near the bay, a breeze off the water there. 93 at pax river. farther west now, charlottesville up to 92 and culpeper 91. 80s to our west. how does it feel? here's the combination of temperature and humidity. it's not much higher because the humidity is moderate. right now, it does feel, though, like it's 97 in washington with the temperature at 92. and we're going to add that humidity tomorrow, but going forward throughout the rest of the day today, just lots of hazy sunshine throughout the region and overnight tonight, hazy, warm and muggy. and as we get into tomorrow morning, we'll have a few clouds around and then tomorrow afternoon, all these areas in

green, these are zones of potential downpours with thunder and lightning, so we need the rain. that will quickly cool us down tomorrow, but before the rain arrives tomorrow, another very hot day. then as we get into thursday, yes, more rain likely throughout much of the region with more clouds around and from midday all the way into the afternoon hours, some passing showers, maybe some thunder and that will cool things down and it will settle down then thursday night. so, for the rest of today, yeah, stay cool. very hot up near 100 degrees and feeling like maybe 105 or so and winds just gentle and then overnight tonight, not much relief through the evening and mid-90s early evening and back down to the mid- 80s by midnight and upper 70s around the metro area and bottoming out in the mid-70s in the rural areas and, yes, more humidity around tomorrow as, once again, before any rain arrives, we'll be soaring into the upper 90s feeling like maybe 105 to 110

with the humidity tomorrow afternoon. then those showers and thundershowers coming through, mainly with heavy downpours tomorrow. that will quickly cool it down and then during the day thursday, a lot of clouds around and cooler with highs around 90 or so and then the lower humidity still looking like coming in on friday and just in time for the weekend with a few clouds around. highs 80s and morning lows 60s over the weekend. looking terrific. a nice break from extreme heat and high humidity. >> what a nice present over the weekend. thank you, tom, we'll talk to you, again, before this hour's over. but right now we'll talk to danella sealock and see how things are moving on the roads out there. >> we're looking at road work. taking 395 and heading northbound from edsall, that's where you'll slow down. right lane being blocked by the cones and also in the hov lanes, your right lane has the cones up in that area. delays from edsall as you make

there's one whole lot of people talking about something that was caught on tape. a new york city bus driver is being hailed a hero for catching a 7-year-old autistic girl from a three-story fall. the important thing to remember as you look at this video, though, the girl is okay. so, now, let's check out the video. steven st. bernard was walking home from work when he spotted a little girl dancing on top of a third floor window air conditioning unit. he told her to go back inside the apartment and that's when she lost her balance and fell. he was right there to catch her. >> please, let me catch her, please, let me catch her. let me catch the little baby. i picked her up and was rubbing her and she more or less just kept looking around. she never closed her eyes or lost consciousness.

>> st. bernard suffered a torn tendon in his shoulder. we are hearing from the mystery couple spotted at the d.c. war memorial. angela gallick took these photographs. she thought perhaps they had just gotten engaged and she had been searching for them to give them the photos she had taken. a little more than an hour ago the couple released a statement saying this is not a photograph of their engagement after all. they got engaged actually last month. they were scouting out possible wedding locations when this moment took place. they say they're thrilled with the photos, but they're asking for their privacy at this time. it's 11:26 and coming up in the next half hour of "news 4 midday" new information about a deadly plane crash that happened in montgomery county. plus, what was found in some airline food that injured at least one passenger. tom kierein will be back with a closer look at when we will see relief from this heat out there.

right now a 33-year-old man is accused of shooting his mother and stepfather before turning the gun on himself in charles county. it happened in the 3500 block of seagrape court in waldorf. the shooter died at the scene and the mother is in critical condition, but she is expected to survive. the stepfather is suffering from life-threatening injuries. right now work is complete on a key section of metro's new silver line. this morning, crews installed the final piece of the aerial guideway in tyson's corner. the 380 ton span will eventually take metro over the beltway and into tyson's. the first phase will extend all the way to restin. the slated opening is late next year. and right now, the faa is looking for clues that help explain why a small plane crashed in montgomery county.

one person died and another was critically injured when a plane went down late evening. tracee wilkins is there with the latest for us now. >> we're standing just a few yards away from where that plane came down just through that brush. you can still see it there. now, let me show you what's happening on the other side of the rope where we're standing. here we have an entire community, folks who live in houses here just yards away from the end of the runway. it is amazing that no one else was involved in this crash and that that plane did not hit one of these houses. now, the investigation is into dpaktly why that plane went down is under way. at the davis airport a inila latensville, maryland, letting airmen know they lost one of their own. >> he was a pilot and an aviator and a good aviator. he was a good friend of frank schmidt. he said he was his last student and last night he was the first on the scene after seeing the

plane go down. >> i reached down into the aircraft and his hand was sticking up, i felt and he was no more. >> he said he was in the passenger seat of the 1964 four-seater plane. the man flying the plane who has not been identified was also a seasoned airmen. he was transported in critical condition. >> the process itself is divided into three parts. we looked at, in this case, the man and we looked at the machine and we looked at the environment. >> reporter: this morning, federal aviation administration and national transportation safety board investigators are on the scene of the crash, trying to determine what caused it. >> right now, we are in the fact-gathering stage. we are way, way far away from anything we can call information at this point. >> reporter: as for the student who witnessed his teacher's plane go down, he said his love for flying is as great as it

ever was. >> i have a little airplane parked down there on that air field and as soon as humanly possible i'll get back in the air. that's what we do, that's what we love. >> reporter: officials from davis airport say both the pilot and the passenger had years of aviation experience. they also say that that plane had undergone high maintenance and was in tip top condition when this accident happened. i'm tracee wilkins, news 4. the fbi is joining the investigation into how sewing needles ended up in turkey sandwiches served on delta airlines flights. the airline says the needles were found in at least a half dozen sandwiches on four flights on sunday. all from amsterdam to the u.s. one passenger was hurt, but turned down medical treatment. a catering company in amsterdam made those sandwiches and the company is using prepackaged food during the investigation. a very different type of

scare for passengers on a flight that had just left dulles airport. the united airlines flight was over the atlantic on its way to on sunday when it suddenly dropped 20,000 feet. they went from 40,000 to 20,000 feet. the plane turned around and landed in canada. united says there was a mechanical problem. well, if you hear some loud booms in frederick, maryland, this week, don't be alarmed. the city is just scaring off some birds. starting today, the city will use a bird gun to scare off birds in the area around split rail lane. the city has dealt with them starting around mid-summer. the bird gun is one way to scare off the birds and approved by the humane society and you'll hear the gun go off through this friday. and let's check in with tom, again, now and see when we might see some relief to the heat. he's out on the news 4 storm

patio with the latest on the forecast. any clouds out there, tom? >> yeah, a few breezes. now, normally, the breezes help to cool you down, but not today. the breezes are hot. it's like somebody has a giant hot air blower going and it is maybe just a very light breeze about five to ten miles per hour. we've got the sun pouring down and we have a plaza over here where we have picnic tables and chairs and nobody's outside. you can see. nobody is there everybody is huddled inside in the ac today because we are already now above 90 degrees. it's now at 92 at reagan national and it is into the 90s all around the region and farther to our south, parts of north central virginia into the mid-90s and much of maryland near 90 now and you factor in the humidity, it feels like 95, 96 degrees and out in the mountains, though, higher

elevations, that helps. it is down in the 80s there. and as you get near the bay waters, though, not much of a breeze off the bay. water temperatures in the 80s and temperatures right near the bay are in the 90s, as well. as we look at what's been happening over the last few hours, no clouds around hardly at all and just a few wispy, high, thin clouds. highs reaching 90s by late afternoon and tomorrow humidity will be stifling. it will be higher than today. temperatures, though, about the same into the upper 90s and then relief in the form of some thundershowers tomorrow afternoon. that will cool it down. some of those could be heavy downpours off and on, too, on thursday. and then the weekend looks much better. lower humidity and cooler temperatures for friday, saturday and sunday. highs in the 80s. that is the way it looks, barbara. >> i like your other suggestion, tom, of just thinking about shoveling snow. we're going to be wishing for warm weather when we get to that, i'm sure.

thanks a lot, we'll see you, again, shortly. well, we were talking about corn, how much we love corn from the season and who says you have to head to the country to see corn fields. you'll find one right here in the district. jose planted a corn field in his front yard of his row house in northwest d.c., just blocks from georgia avenue. he's from el salvador and says he misses the food from his native country. he better share it with his neighbors or they will not be too happy about all that corn growing in their front yard. you can soon pay more to park in the hot spots. expanding its performance parking strategy that started around nationals park. usually meters around the park are $1 an hour, but they jump to $8 an hour on game days. vdot hasn't announced it will charge in new performance zones. the higher rates help cut down on the number of drivers who park for hours at a time,

preventing residents from finding spots near their home to park. we'll check on the mid-day traffic now, again, here's danella sealock. >> actually, we have good news. down wires in northwest along connecticut avenue. that is now gone and that road has reopened. that's good news. let's head down to 395 and still seeing delays as you make your way northbound. problem road work here, take a look. you can see the cones are up blocking that left lane and as you make your way from the beltway, you're slow past edsall. now, let's take a live look at the wilson bridge. no issues as you cross it on the inner loop and outer loop, nice and clear at this time. barbara, back over to you. >> thanks, danella. police are looking for witnesses who may have seen a deadly crash, but didn't stop to help the victim. arlington police released this surveillance video showing people walk by ignoring the dying man. a car hit him on columbia pike

the night after the big storm when many of the traffic and street lights were out. the driver did stay on the scene. and police want to talk to the people who were in that video. they say those people are not in trouble and they shouldn't worry about that. they just want to ask them some questions about the crash. new allegations against the man charged with killing trayvon martin. a woman now says george zimmerman molested her when she was a little girl. the woman said she, that the abuse began when she was just 6 years old. she said zimmerman was 8 years old at the time and she claims he continued to molest her for the next decade. the unnamed woman contacted police shortly after trayvon martin was short and killed. she also said zimmerman and her family didn't like african-americans who don't act like white people. prosecutors have said that if they, if they that they may use the woman's accusations in the trial. three new victims are accusing jerry sandusky of child

abuse dating back to the early 1970s. in the early 1970s when one of the men said he was abused, the former penn state assistant football coach would have been in his late 20s at that time and convicted in june on 45 counts of child sex abuse against ten victims. since the trial began, more alleged victims have come forward, including sandusky's adopted son. the grand jury investigation is still meeting and could potentially hear from more of those alleged victims. sandusky is set to be sentenced in september. meanwhile, nfl star quarterback michael vick is opening up about his road to redemption. the hampton, virginia, native served 19 months in prison for his role in a dog fighting operation back in 2007. this morning on "today" show vic explained what he told his 7-year-old son when his son found out that his father was going to prison. >> it was tough, i really

couldn't explain it. the only thing i could do at the time was console him. you know, and there was no explanation. it was, you know, very deep and very far fetched for his brain, too far fetched for his brain, i understand, what i had done. the only thing he knew is was that i was going to jail and he knew the concept and it was a situation where money couldn't get me out of feelings or emotions and none of that. >> vick is coming out with his new book called "finally free" this fall. he said he learned about dog fighting at 8 years old himself. he is now working with the humane society to stop dog fighting altogether. a major milestone this morning in the fight against aids. the food and drug administration just approved the first drug shown to reduce the risk of hiv infection. it's called truvada. a preventive measure for people

transfat went down. >> reporter: five years ago new york city became the first in the nation to implement a transfat ban in all of its 24,000 restaurants. in a new study, new york city health officials calculated the nutrition content of nearly 7,000 receipts from orders placed after the ban was implemented. they found diners ate significantly less transfat and there was only a slight increase in saturated fat. >> you can walk into your favorite restaurant and order the exact same lunch you've always ordered and it just has much less transfat, nothing else has changed. >> reporter: including how food tastes and how much it costs to prepare. what appears to have changed is a customer's risk for heart disease. >> we know that when transfat intake goes down, bad cholesterol goes down, cardio vascular risk goes down. >> reporter: consumers still need to make healthy decisions when heeating out. but at least in new york city, patrons can order their food without a hidden dollop of

transfat and for some that might be the icing on the cake. >> since the new york city ban took effect, other cities have followed suit, including philadelphia, boston and seattle as well as the entire state of california. well, the redskins are one of the nfl's most storeied franchises. we all know that. they also happen to be one of the most valuable sports teams in the whole world. a new report by "forbes" ranks the redskins as the fifth most valuable franchise in the world at more than $1.5 billion. that's what they say it's worth. they trail the redskins trail the dallas cowboys, we don't want to hear that and the new york yankees for the most valuable teams in the u.s. which both tied with a value of $85 billion. topping the list is uk soccer team, manchester united which is worth an estimated $2.2 billion. and they're followed by another soccer team real madrid.

>> what's number one on your list in. >> one of the first things everyone should have because it's summertime is sunscreen. a lot of sunscreens are mixed with moisturizers, it's two for four. that's the first thing. an antibiotic, we like, as dermatologists polysporin versus neosporin because people have sensitivi sensitivities. it usually sits right beside it on the shelf that you can get these topical antibiotics. this one is better, less sensitivity with this product. >> okay. >> the next one is have some cortisone cream. 1% hydrocortisone cream is safe enough for children and adults if you get bug bites or itchy crash hydrocortisone cream is one of the best things that you can use. >> will that get rid of the itch? >> it will help with the itch, but, also, take an antihistamine

along with you. i have claritin here, but benadryl is safe for infants and children. you can get the syrup or the lixer type of benadryl. having that on hand and some people prefer the topical benadryl cream. >> benadryl always a good idea, especially for the itching from bug bites and that sort of thing. >> those are the basic things. now, other things that women like to have in their handbags like tweezers. >> that's on my list. did you mention any aveeno. >> this is a topical preparation so if you're miserable there are products out there that have a hydrocortisone or antibiotic that they're also combined with a topical anesthetic. >> will it work for sunburn, too. >> it will work for sunburn or anything that there is a little pain associated with it. >> i told you the thing that i'm always looking for that i don't have and now you can carry it
