anybody in his way he was going to shoot. >> terror in a movie theater. children, a baby mowed down by gunfire during a midnight premier in colorado. tonight 12 people are dead, 60 others injured. police have a suspect in custody but they say he set so many bobby traps inside his home it could take days to remove them all. good afternoon, everybody i'm jim handly. >> i'm pat lawson muse. we'll bring you the weather and potential for more flooding. meteorologist veronica johnson is monitoring the conditions for us from the storm center. >> thanks a lot. take a look at the radar. today we got widespread rains across the area. we don't have any thunderstorms right now so there's no lightning out there and because of the fact we don't have any thunderstorms not expecting any

high winds for the next couple of hours. here's a look at where the back edge of most of that rain is from baltimore where they are getting moderate rain, eastern areas of howard county to the district. exiting areas right inside the beltway and on the other side of woodbridge and quantico, virginia. that will be moving out. here's what's moving in. a line of strong thunderstorms from pittsburgh just outside of west virginia. i think that will be moving into our area after 8:00 p.m. and we could then as that line moves through get some areas with moderate and heavy rain again. we could be getting some lightning as well. that's what we got to deal with later. that means the potential for more flooding as we saw last night with the heavy rains that came through. a flash flood watch through 11:00 p.m. and covers the entire viewing area. here's the rainfall amounts we picked up. .63 in maryland.

gaithersburg .78 inch of rain. temperatures in the 80s. we'll talk about what we can expect this weekend and how cool it will be. >> turning now to the other top story that deadly shooting inside a movie theater inside denver, colorado. 12 people killed, 60 others were hurt. the gunfire broke out during the midnight premier of the new batman movie. the suspect james holmes is in custody. authorities are searching his apartment locate ad few miles from the theater. they believe it is rigged with explosives and the search could take days. police say the suspect was heavily armed last night when he barged into a crowded theater, hurling a gas canister and opening fire on the crowd. >> nbc's jay gray has the latest now. >> reporter: it was just after midnight when the "dark knight" quickly moved from fiction to reality. >> it sounded like madness.

we were watching a scene of the movie. it was a shootout scene. guns were firing. a loud bang came from the right of the theater. smoke took over. >> reporter: witnesses say a man wearing a helmet, bullet proof vest, loaded with body armor and a gas mask burst through the exit door near the movie screen and tossed two canisters into the theater. >> it was a gas canister. got harder to breathe. then gun shots started. >> reporter: the gunman identified as 24-year-old james holmes fired one shot into the air then turned his weapons on the crowd. knee walks up the stairs and i hear gunshot after gunshot and women and children screaming. >> reporter: when the chaos and killing ended 12 people were dead, 59 injured. >> most of the injuries were again gunshot wounds. they appear to be of high caliber. >> reporter: holmes was armed with an assault weapon, two high

caliber pistols. he was captured behind the theater. warning officers his apartment was bobby trapped with explosives. >> chemical elements there and also some intent diary elements. >> reporter: as the investigation continues at his apartment and theater, holmes family in san diego has released a written statement which says in part our hearts go out to those who were involved in this tragedy and to the families and friends of those involved. the faces of those lost in the shooting are coming to light. people like jessica ghawi, an aspiring sportscaster. so many struggling like investigators here to understand how and why it happened. jay gray, nbc news, aurora, colorado. >> here's more of what we know about the suspect. james holmes. he's 24 years old. done have a criminal record at

colorado. officials at university of colorado in denver said he was in the process of withdrawing from a graduate program in neuroscience. holmes enrolled in the program one year ago. his mother again lives in san diego. local police departments are watching the events in colorado very closely today as people head out to theaters in our area. they are beefing up security as a precaution against possible copycat crimes. montgomery county's police chief said you'll see more officers at theaters where "dark knight" is being described. alexandria police are doing the same as are other police departments throughout our region and across the country. "the dark knight" rises was expected to set records. movie goers are still heading to the theaters but well aware of the violence that unfolded in colorado. richard jordan has reaction from the uptown they tesh in cleveland park.

>> reporter: the poster promotes the most anticipated movie of the summer. tickets are selling hours after a midnight massacre. >> somebody coming through an emergency exit is frightened. >> reporter: people were out early for the latest in the bat man franchise. >> i won't stop doing what i usually do just because people shot somebody. you got to go on with your life. >> reporter: the caped crusader billed as an action-packed thriller. the blockbuster film drawing big crowds for the premier showing but the hype of the movie is tainted by tragedy, an audience covered in blood and some killed. movie goers are coming to the theater with the shooting on their mind but they won't let fear get in their way. >> hope it's not a pattern and spread all over. it's one isolated incident. >> don't take away your liberties because some nut did

it. if you're going to start searching everybody nobody wants to go to the movies. >> reporter: d.c. police will pay extra attention to theaters. movie goers say that's fine. what they don't want to see is metal detectors or security officers inspecting them just to go see a movie. in northwest washington, richard jordan, news 4. >> in response to the deadly shooting, warner brothers cancelled today's paris premier of "the dark knight rises." cast and crew members were already in paris. they suspended the interviews. no word on when the premier will be rescheduled. >> the studio has released a statement. it says warner brothers and the film makers are deeply saddened to learn about this shocking incident. we extend our sincere sympathies to the families and loved one of the victims at this tragic time. >> the presidential candidates called for unity and offered prayers and sympathy for victims of the theater shooting. brian mooar reports. >> reporter: president obama and

all right. how many times have we said here we go again. a lot of neighborhoods are suffering this week. >> you want me to tell you? >> don't tell us we're going to do it again. >> yes. tonight. tonight the potential for more storms. we got them late last night with moderate and heavy rain. we'll get it again late tonight between 8:00 p.m. and about 1:00 a.m. in the morning. as far as what we've seen so far, i made this composite for you that shows where the heavier rain totals have been. they have been mainly around d.c. up into areas of baltimore. they had all that flooding yesterday, three to four inches of rain up in baltimore. you can see the darker shadings there of dark blue and green just up to the north and of course here around d.c. over two inches of rain in isolated spots. what we got now showers moving through generally light showers, fredericksburg, waldorf through d.c., annapolis, baltimore,

maryland right now some more moderate rain. on the western side of the county. we got a big break and then after 8:00 p.m., 9:00 p.m., strong line that's going to come in to our area. does have some lightning with it. so we might have some high winds. i don't think we'll have anything over 40 definitely some lightning and more downpours. we're at 81 degrees. gone from hot to very stormy to really wet and on the cool side. our temperatures will dip down to mid-70s by 11:00 p.m. it's rain, rain, overnight. tomorrow morning showers starting out at 66 and 71 degrees. depends on what side of the front you'll be on and indeed ate front that's right through d.c. with an area of low pressure that's moving east along that front and that's what's going to allow us to see more showers and storms across parts of the area tomorrow. if you're on the north side of this front, mainly areas north of d.c., you'll have kind of a

cool showery type of conditions tomorrow. on the south side and right along the front the potential for some isolated storms and some moderate to heavy rain. by sunday we'll see that front really start to lay out more, wiggle around the area so showers and maybe a thunderstorm back in the forecast but really for sunday that's more off to the west of our area. this evening's forecast then rain likely with some isolated thunder coming our way, occasionally heavy especially around that midnight hour of 70 to 78 degrees. by tomorrow morning your temperature, 66 to 72, and that is a cooler start for us by oh, by five degrees or so from where we've been in the last couple of days. light showers early tomorrow morning and then we could get heavier showers and rain for the afternoon. higher humidity too on the south side of that front. so, again, it all depends on where you are and what you'll get tomorrow. temperature 77 to 81. look at what happens on sunday. we scoot it up to 86 and i do think on sunday we'll get a few

injured when a gunman opens fire in a crowded movie theater. welcome back at 4:30. i'm jim handly. >> i'm barbara harrison in for pat lawson muse. we'll have the latest from colorado in just a moment. first a weather alert. >> meteorologist veronica johnson is watching for the possibility of more flooding. she's in storm center 4. >> we got more showers falling right now. generally light throughout the area but the fact is more moderate to heavy rain coming our way this evening and we got the potential for flooding. flash flood watch until 11:00 p.m. where? every where throughout the viewing area. we're watching just off to our waste strong line moving in, i think between 8:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. we'll see that line moving through. some isolated heavy rain and flooding once again is possible. take a look at the radar. there are are your showers, d.c., annapolis, waldorf, leonardtown moving out with more off to the west. that's virginia coming in. more coming up.

the mayor of aurora, colorado tonight said it's a tragic day for his community. shortly after midnight a man wearing a gas mask set off a gas canister and opened fire inside a crowded movie theater in this denver suburb. at least a dozen people again killed. 60 others injured. folks were there to see the new batman movie. some bullets went through the wall and into the theater next door. >> we thought, you know, special effects, midnight showing that's awesome what theater does that any more and then it was after a while that i started to get more curious about it and i turned and looked at the wall and people started to stand up and starting to leave and me and my sister and friends were wondering what was going on what was happening and then at that point i saw something come through the wall, multiple objects just float through the wall, i saw holes in the walls and everything. >> the suspect was arrested outside that theater near a car. authorities found several guns

in his possession. they are now searching his apartment and expect to be there for quite sometime. police say the apartment is bobby trapped. no word yet on a motive for the shooting. that shooting suspect james holmes is 24 years old. his only contact with police in colorado was a speed being ticket back in october. he enrolled in a graduate medical program at the university of colorado for neuroscience last summer but he was in the process of withdrawing from that program. and this just into our newsroom. police have evacuated part of the campus now. authorities say there's no specific threat, but they are searching two research buildings as a precaution. also just in, the associated press is reporting that holmes is not cooperating with investigators. a long and difficult road lies ahead for the victims and their families. we're joined by a doctor with more on the trauma that they are facing and how they might be able to handle it. there were a lot of kids apparently in that theater and

young people of all ages. we've seen them, heard what they had to say. they are all really kind of strung out as they describe what's happening. how do families help them deal with what they've been through? >> first of all, this is just such an extraordinary event that nobody can be prepared for this. so i think that these people who were in the theater, they are just flooded with so many different emotions, they are probably mostly feeling numb because we're not prepared. our brains are not prepared to process such an extraordinary event. so i think even though they come across on tv, to me as seeming fairly calm given the circumstances as we've seen during some of the earlier clips. >> almost hyped up. >> hyped up. i'm surprised to see how calm they appear. you see that probably because they are feeling a state of numbness. it will be a couple of days before this really tarts to sink in for them. >> what how old families do to help them? >> the key for families is that they want to process had event

in every minute detail. they want to talk to the person about every single thing that happened. they don't want to ato the person who ended up leaving the theater doing okay without any injuries saying you know you're really so lucky that you survived. they don't want to focus on that and try to blow over all the difficulty that this person is probably going to face as a result of the psychological trau trauma. there's survivor guilt. >> how about the families of those who lost loved ones last night or this morning? >> just terrible. i think they too are probably in a total state of shock and aggressive, anger, a mix of so many emotions. they are going to want to reach out to everybody available to them, prosees this, even though they themselves were not in the theater. if they lost somebody they are trau traumatized and grieving. they are imagining all the

horrible things that happened to their loved ones. >> let's talk about the suspect. this man planned this. he had tear gas, guns. what was he, what was in his mind? >> it's so hard to know what was in his mind. one thing you want to look into is see if maybe he had a mental illness like schizophrenia or psychotic illness. maybe he was hearing voices, telling him to do this or maybe he was using a lot of drugs and that was causing him to have an altered state of perception of things. however, i also think it's possible that he was feeling like a person who just had no purpose really. he was a graduate students but maybe he felt he's a nobody and he needs to do something to show everybody that he's important and that he can change the world. and, in fact, what are we all doing today? we're all talking about this guy. >> had there been any sign that his family should have recognized or friends inner loop

that's asking a lot of people. even if they saw that he was depressed oranges or not sleeping or acting somewhat strangely i think nobody imagines that somebody they know is going to do something of this magnitude. so they have may have had some signs but to ask them to have been able to identify that he was about to do something this great and this terrible is asking too much of people. >> doctor, thank you so much for coming in and talking to us about this. >> thank you. >> jim? >> when we come back, of course our team coverage of this tragedy continues. again 1 people dead, 59 others injured when a gunman opens fire in that crowded movie theater in colorado. some of the victims thought it was part of the show until the gravity of the situation became frighteningly real. >> after that he was shooting people behind me and i had like gun shells falling on my head, burning my forehead. i smell ee eed powder.

getting enough exercise is important for everyone but it's especially important for kids with special needs. >> tonight we check out a gym that's helping these kids not only learn to work out but to have fun at the same time. we asked them what's your work out? >> i told you you could do it. >> we deal with all different kinds of children from kids that are autistic, kids with cerebral palsy. so what we're trying to deal with is trying to help these kids work on certain motor skills. >> great catch! >> take certain exercises that they need to be working on or certain areas that they need to be working on and we twist it in a way where they fine it fun to do. every talent has three level of lights. each level has a distinct tone to it. what you have to do is the person has to now from an auditory standpoint is process where is that sound coming from.

>> doing a great job. >> what it is it works from quick reaction and coordination. up. good, good. we have a machine that basically what you do a light comes on and you have to jump up and jump down. we're working with their muscles and legs. we also have a laser maze. what's beautiful about thatcy think many times people assume that oh, that looks like a fun game. it's not. what it does it really allows to you understand where is your body now in space. >> when he came here he was pretty much walking with a walker. and he is walking now. i mean they have him using his arms. they work on strengthening him and balance. jason with autism, it's a different mode of disabilities. staff works with him on communication. they have had crazy stuff that's

here now for the evening hours early part of the night we're talking about more moderate and heavy rain in some spots that could be coming in. jim you and i talked during the break. we don't think this line coming in as fierce as last night. not at much lightning. we had quite the light show last night. there's possibility of some flooding with any of these storms that come rolling on through. 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. is that time period that i'm looking for the line to come in to our area and make its way from west to east. those showers sliding eastward. and really starting to break up. they are really starting to fall apart around d.c. and down to the south but the other line here just now coming into west virginia, if you remember yesterday that line came in after 9:00. so this one too here for the late evening hours and early part of the night. our temperatures, way cool. after a high of 101 on tuesday we're now at 72 degrees around mount airy, frederick, maryland.

79 in leesburg. manassas 79. these are our warm spots too and really closer to where our early morning temperatures were at the beginning of the week. high temperatures for tomorrow about 80 degrees to our north, 78 manassas, 79 degrees around culpeper. again, more rain. take a look at the future weather here for the evening. here's the line coming in and moving through. most of those storms are expected to make their way right through the south of our area, quantico and waldorf and then there's a possibility of more showers and storms along that front tomorrow. rain threat for tomorrow currently at 50% chance, 40% chance for sunday, so a little wet and cool and damp for the weekend. i can say cool and damp, certainly cool after the highs that were in the triple-digit readings at the beginning of the week. 90s for next week, low 90s. >> that's veronica. there's much more still to come on news 4. >> coming up a news 4 exclusive

a close call for a woman on a scooter in china this week. take a look at that. police say the woman ran a red light while a truck was rushing through to get through the intersection. she jumped off her scooter. the scooter destroyed. traffic cameras captured the whole thing when the argument between two drivers who was at fault. the woman known as the queen of soul food has died. sylvia woods owned sylvia's restaurant in harlem. she passed away yesterday. no word on official cause of death but family members says the 86-year-old had been battling alzheimer's disease. she opened the restaurant back in 1962. it has attracted everyone from locals to tourist, even presidents. >> i've done my share of damage
