hi, everyone. we're going to show you some of the more interesting stories news across the area this week. among them, in the bag, why some celebrities and cancer patients are turning to intravenous infusions to maintain their looks and their health. police investigators investigating the first lady and who allegedly made the threat. plus, a taste of london. we'll have a preview of the eats and treats spectators can look forward to at the summer olympics. first, she is just 9 years old. even with adults and live guards around, this little girl is the one who saved another child's life at the pool. news4's melissa has the story.

>> reporter: 9-year-old camille revis is being hailed a hero. >> i love i know swming. >> reporter: june 26, it was a hot day here at the complex pool in manassas. her mother doesn't want her daughter's face shown but camille was here with her grandmother. >> i was going to get out and i saw the girl. she was face down on the bottom of the pool. so i held my breath and went down there and poke her to see if she was just playing around, holding her breath or something and she didn't look at me. >> reporter: the little girl, a 4-year-old. police say her mother had left her five children, ages 1-8, inside the gates here while she signed in a guest. this is where the little girl was. camille says when she saw her, she picked her up. she cradled her. she laid her right here on the concrete and yelled for help. >> in, help, someone, help me! i think this girl drowneded. >> reporter: the little girl wasn't breathing. the life guards started cpr. the mother of two witnessed the

rescue. she said it was terrifying. >> she had stuff coming out of her mouth and nose. >> reporter: continental pool which runs the facility here tells news4, they have completed an investigation and the life guards were in the proper positions at the time. the 4-year-old is expected to make a full recovery. camille was honored by west gate. >> she doesn't think it was such a big deal. she said she was very light to push out of the pool but it a big deal. she is a tiny, petite girl. it is amazing. >> reporter: prince william fire and rescue will give her an award for her bravery. >> i feel like i did something really good. >> reporter: in manassas, virginia, news4. >> it is a big thing and we know that her parents are proud. a new service in d.c. could really be a life saver. it is called smart 911. d.c. residents can create online profiles that emergency responders use during 911 calls. users can include information about addresses, phone numbers,

medical conditions, family members, even information about their pets. the city's fire and ems chief says it will be extremely helpful in those panic situations that come up. the new service is free it is and available in 34 different languages. smart 911.com. it has caused frustration and outrage according to the police department and now an officer has been placed on desk duty for allegedly about shooting first lady michelle obama. here's more on the fallout. >> reporter: the secret service is investigating. sources told me an officer overheard the comment and told a lieutenant in the department. the d.c. police officer is in hot water for allegedly threatening first lady michelle obama. according to secret service, it was made during wednesday morning's roll call. it handles presidential and dignitary motorcades.

the d.c. police chief will me, there is conflicting information about what the officer said. internal affairs will get to the bottom of it. according to the "washington post," the officer allegedly that he would shoot the first lady and then pulled up a picture of the gun he said he would use on his phone. here in front of the white house, tourists say they are concerned about this allegation. >> i'm very disturbed. i think that's ridiculous. >> reporter: the department placed the office order administrative duty. >> it's horrible that anybody would threaten our first lady. especially a metropolitan police officer. >> reporter: the police union chief won't comment. he said this is a criminal investigation. police won't release the name of the officer. outside the white house, news4. >> all right. moving on. security, tight at the london summer olympics. and it's been the only focus, of course for spectators. doug kammerer got a taste of the british eats and treats and the excitement of the summer game. let's take a look.

only from verizon. the white house may have the most famous vegetable garden but another urban farmer is the most of his own green space. jose planned a corn field in front of his rowhouse in northwest. now, he's watered and he's tended to those corn stalks for three months and now he has plants to harvest. he said he'll be making tamales and tortillas. he said he misses the food in his native el salvador and this is how they do it at home. next to growing your own crops, fine fruits and vegetables in season is about as fresh as you can get. but it can still be hard to keep

them fresh when you get them home. liz crenshaw shows us how to properly store produce to keep it looking and tasting great. >> reporter: the farmer's market, a sure sign of summer and the abundance colors and smells of the season. produces from the farmer's market is local and fresh but it doesn't last forever. >> basically, pick what you can use within the next few days. >> reporter: janet with usda knows how to keep your produce tasting its best. let's look at the berries, basically. they are the most perishable. when you're selecting the berries, you want to look under each one. because there is likely to be mold if they've been around for any length of time at all. when you bring them home. immediately put them in the refrigerator. and then when you're ready to eat them, wash them and serve. >> washing they will teerl creates an opportunity for mold to grow. she said berries are happiest at

50 to 55 degrees which is warmer than you would ever keep milk and meat in your refrigerator. that's what the crisper is for. >> having the separate drawer, the theory is it can be a little bit different than mayo >> what about keeping fruit out in the bowl? >> in the case of the plums and the peaches and the in effectarines, they can be on the counter. zucchini, summer squash, tomatoes. >> they should be refrigeratored except the tomatoes. the tomatoes, you don't want to refrigerator. that kills the flavor. how about zucchini? yellow squash? >> egg plant, corn, they should all go in the refrigerator and none to be washed ahead of time. >> leafy greens. they carry a lot of moisture so they, too, need to be refrigeratored. but don't wash them until they're ready to eat them. >> the only lettuce that you can

wash ahead is something like iceberg or romaine. >> potatoes keep best in a cool dry place like a basement or a basket in the cabinet. >> can i put these in the frig? >> you wonderful that's too cold. same with the onion. don't put that in the refrigerator for the same reason. i know some people who do but they lose bite that way. >> how about melons? >> we recommend leaving them out until you are sure you got them at the ripeness you want. >> here's a safety tip. even though we don't teeth rind of the melon, make sure you wash it before you cut it. >> there is bapotential for mol and bacteria and you don't want to take your knife and cut through and carry it through the rest of the fruit. >> so follow your rules for properly storing your produce and the sweet taste of summer will last a bit longer. liz crenshaw, news4. >> liz always has such great tips. the usda hosts the familiar rme

much higher. it robs us of the thing we value the most. >> the actress shows her role as an activist on capitol hill. she testified before a senate committee on human trafficking. she picked for the renewal of the protection act. earlier this year she started an organization called don't sell bodies to bring attention to the more than 27 million sex slaves worldwide. not too far from the hill, a couple's romantic moment was captured and it went viral. now the mystery of who they are was solved. the photo was snamd at a d.c. war memorial by the nevada tourist who says that she saw an airman slip a ring on his companion's finger but the air force released a statement from the couple. they say that picture does not show a proposal. the couple in fact gotten gauged two weeks earlier. they were just scouting locations for their wedding. sure in things aren't always what you see. that's all. thanks for joining us until next time. be safe, be kind, and be happy.
