the tragedy in colorado, one of the worst mass shootings in american history. hundreds gather for a candlelight vigil. 12 people were killed and 60 wounded when a graduate student dressed in combat gear opened fire early yesterday morning during a showing of the new batman movie. >> police say the suspect called himself a joker and had planned the attack for at least two months. investigators still have not gained access to the suspect's apartment. they're heading back out today to gather that evidence. >> we'll have much more on the mass shooting in colorado, but first we want to get your forecast. >> we have rain moving out of the area. chuck bell is in the weather center. >> a good saturday morning, everybody. your weekend finally here. and we're really going to be catching a break from the extreme heat we've been dealing with for most of the summer. off to a wonderful, cloudy and cool start this morning. won't be the best day outside enjoying the weather, but boy if you're going to be outside doing a little bike riding or jogging

today, sure is a nice cool change compared to the last couple of weeks. 68 right now at national airport, 63 in montgomery county. there are rain showers dotting the landscape this morning. heaviest of the showers between downtown washington and the 270 spur coming into the capital beltway there on the northwest sides of town. also a little batch of showers down towards culpepper and up 95 for the next little while. and rain showers out towards the blue ridge shenandoah valley. there's the showers this morning. more clouds than sunshine for today. i don't even know that you'll get a whole lot in the way of sunshine this afternoon. highs today probably going to stay below 80 degrees. that will be a nice change. tomorrow will be the better outdoor weather day but still not a complete dry day guarantee. >> thank you, chuck. >> and more now on the movie massacre in aurora, colorado. a candlelight vigil held last

night for the 12 victims killed. we're hearing from people who were inside when the gunfire started. leanne gregg reports. ♪ >> reporter: mourners gathered at vigils not far from the crime scene trying to make sense of one of the worst shooting rampages in u.s. history. police say 24-year-old james holmes kicked open the theater's back door, tossed in smoke devices and came in shooting. he was dressed in black wearing a gas mask and body armor, armed with an assault rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun and two glock handgun. ten were killed at the scene, two died later. steven burton is among the 58 injured. >> at the time i thought it was firework, then i got hit here and i realized it was something much more serious. and people started screaming. there was a lot of chaos. >> at that moment i just remember thinking i'm not going to die in here. me and my kids, we're not going to die in here. i need to get them out.

i need to get out. and all i could think was if i stand up, he's going to shoot because that's what he was doing. and i was just trying to think. >> reporter: a few miles away the suspect's apartment described by aurora officials as extensively booby-trapped, continue to be a focus of the investigation. with help of a robot officials are working on a plan to disarm what appears to be bottles connected with wires with possibly incendiary devices. colorado's governor is among those struggling to understand why this happened. >> the whole country recognizes that this is something that we don't accept, we can't explain at this point, but we're not going to just let it happen to us. we're going to push back. ♪ >> reporter: a community in mourning as the investigation enters another day. leanne gregg, nbc news, aurora, colorado. today police will once again try to gain access to james

holmes' apartment. holmes booby-trapped the place with trip wires to ammunition to fireworks. investigators are being cautious preserve the information inside including computer and laptops. this morning holmes' friends and neighbors are speaking out about the shooting. the 24-year-old grew up in suburban san diego california. he graduated from the university of california riverside with a degree in neuroscience in 2010. a friend described him as smart and funny. >> first i found out it was him, the first thank you i thought was expletives. oh, my god, i can't believe this happened. >> i just keep thinking what happened to a nice little boy from a nice family and it's terrible. >> the holmes family issued a statement saying, quote, our hearts go out to those who were involved in this tragedy. we are still trying to process

this information, and we appreciate that people respect our privacy, end quote. the director of the "dark knight" trilogy also spoke out. christopher nolan released a statement that said in part, quote, the movie theater is my home and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me, end quote. and some of the country's largest theater chains are changing their security procedures. amc theaters say it will not allow customers to wear masks or bring fake weapons into the theater any more. regal cinemas is tightening their security as well. a representative said only that ticket holders should expect stricter control over character attire and accessories. montgomery and county police have dispatched extra patrols to the showings in silver spring. some moviegoers say the shootings did not affect their decision to see the film last

prince george's county police are offering a $25,000 reward for help to catch a suspect killer. authorities are looking for rudy guerra. police believe he shot a man last week in langley park. police are warning people not to

approach him as he's considered harmed and dangerous. call drim stoppers at 866-41-tips. investigators say 60-year-old hays dennis was stabbed in the chest during a dispute at the gold star cab company on q street southwest. the company was closed at the time but mechanics and other employees often stay late. police are still looking for the attacker and a motive. maryland pepco customers will soon see a rate hike but their bills won't go up as much as expected. the maryland public service commission rejected most of the rate increase request. if the entire request was approved, customers would have seen a monthly increase of around $5.50. instead the increase will be about $2. they said that pepco did not deserve it caiting what they cal

a history of poor service. three champion style buses after a fire wednesday in silver spring. there have been at least a dozen fires on the champion buses since 2009. the company says it will run a normal schedule this weekend. a modified holiday schedule will be in place next weekend. right now the food and drug administration is warning people not to eat raw or partially cooked shellfish that come from new york's oyster bay harbor. this comes after several people got sick in several states including maryland. oysters and clams could be contaminated with bacteria that causes stomach illness. consumers should check the tags on their shellfish to identify where they were harvested. if they were harvested in the harbor on or after june 1st this year, consumers should throw the shellfish away. a worker that caused the hepatitis c outbreak worked with

johns hopkins hospital. the contaminated syringes were then used on patient that have since been diagnosed with hepatitis. quite at c kwiatkowski worked at johns hopkins in 2009 and a spokesman said he also worked at three other hospitals but those locations haven't been named. the time is 6:14. ahead the decision some olympic athlete are making this week. across fairfax county are upset with a change in policy that could force them to cut the number of children they care for. but county elected leader are hoping to head off a child care crisis. >> not by the hair of my -- >> chinny chin chin. >> today kathy is caring for just two children at the lucky stars preschool academy located in the lower level of her lorton home. her state license allows her to care for up to 12 children and sometime she's does with the help of an assistant. but a new state rule suddenly puts her dare care home and hundreds of others in jeopardy. that's because it now requires the providers to make sure county zoning officials are aware of the home business. and the big disconnect was discovered. while the state allows 12 kids, the county only allows 7. though a special peshlt can raise that number to ten. >> feasibly i wouldn't be able to stay open. >> she's operated her home day care center for 12 years and she

has 12 children booked for fall. including six babies. >> you get attached to these kids. just the thought of tell the parents two have to leave and choosing the two, how do you do that? >> they have eased the uproar a bit by promising a grace period. the new rule won't be enforced until possible changes can be examined. >> from my own personal point of view, i think raising the upper limit to 12 is an appropriate thing to do. the last thing we want to do is to lose good child care providers. >> this mom who is hoping her son can enter lucky stars in a year says the county can't afford to lose quality home day care. >> it's not a large sort of industrial type of setting, you know, and it's where i want my kids to be when i can't be with them. >> day care providers will huddle with county officials at a town hall meeting monday. it seems pretty cool out

off to a damp start on your saturday morning. not a whole lot of other rain to really worry about. if you're getting the car packed and heading down to the beach, not best beach weekend. kind of cloudy and stormy. tomorrow passing showers. finally the warmer weather comes back early next week. for us today, a whole lot more cloud cover than rain today. but nevertheless have the umbrellas ready to go. most of that should fade away. then tomorrow with a little more moisture and warmer air coming under way. might be able to bubble up showers tomorrow in the afternoon hours tomorrow will still be the better of the two days this weekend. today then mostly cloudy, passing showers slowly tapering off by late afternoon evening timeframe. then for tomorrow a little bit more sunshine, noticeably warmer tomorrow and the risk of a chance of a thunderstorm tomorrow or evening timeframe. here's the all-important seven-day forecast. cloudy today, 79. back into the 90s for monday and

tuesday. next week looks like we'll hover around the 90-degree mark for the rest of the week. no 100s. you can follow me on twitt twitter @chuckbell4. london is preparing for top notch security at olympic park. >> britain's home secretary says the games are on track to be safe and secure. tech secretary theresa may stopped by the security hub yesterday after the private security firm admitted last week that it could not supply enough security guards. 3 3,500 troops have been sent in. the final alterations have been put in play before the olympic games. the network is massive to allow athletes and officials to get across the city in record time. they began the final stable of the network late last night.

the olympic road network is set to open tuesday. most of the olympic athletes have already arrived in london. >> but the most famous participant of the olympics made a pretty dramatic entrance into the city. the olympic torch arrived in london yesterday via helicopter. it was then rappelled down by the royal marines. the flame was eventually give on the a small torch which will stay the night in london's jewel house alongside the london jewels. >> pretty impressive. muslim olympic athletes face a dilemma. the month of ramadan began which requires muslims to fast. what should olympians do who observe the whole month, keep fasting or preserve their strength. one practicing muslim says in the end it's the individual olympians choice. >> they can talk to their doctor. fand it's bad for them to fast while they're playing, it's very

mississippi. favre will work at oak grove high school, which is near his home in hattiesburg. no word on what his role will entail but he's worked with that high school in the past. the nationals hopefully got a good night's sleep as they prepare for a double header today against the braves. washington and atlanta play their first game at 1:00, then take a short break before starting game two at 7:00 tonight. the nationals are hoping to bounce back from a devastating loss. washington was up 9-0 by the fifth, but atlanta stormed back eventually winning the game in 11 innings. for the nats, their largest blown lead in franchise history. the orioles put up a ton of runs but no letdown against the indians. the o's stomped cleveland 10-2. jim thome hit his 610th career home run. he's now seventh on the all-time

unleashed inside this colorado movie theater. >> it's an act that defies jipgs. >> reporter: police say 23-year-old james holmes was dressed in full body armor and wearing a gas mask when he burst through an exit door during the premiere of the movie "the dark knight," first tossing two smoke canisters, then opening fire. >> he was going up the stairs and shooting everybody just at random. he didn't have an agenda except to kill people. >> reporter: he had weapons purchased in the last 60 days and that through the internet he had ordered more than 6,000 rounds of ammunition. >> he could have gotten off 60 rounds even if it was semiautomatic within one minute. as far as we know it was a pretty rapid pace of fire in that theater. >> reporter: chaos erupted with that gunfire. victims scattered across the theater, others scrambling to try to escape. a horrific scene that rattled

even soend officers. >> our cops went through a lot. as i told you this morning, they rushed people out of that theater into police cars. >> reporter: when it was over, 12 people were dead. 58 injured. >> he was just like unloading into the crowd. it seemed to me to be very purposeful and methodical. >> reporter: holmes was captured behind the theater and apparently surrendered without putting aup fight. his hair was dyed bright orange and he told officer he was joker from the batman series. bomb squads are still at his residence tonight. >> it's a very vexing problem how to enter the apartment safely. i've never seen anything like the pictures shois. >> reporter: many in this community say they've seen anything like the horror that

unfolded here. jay gray, colorado. in addition to the 12 killed more than 50 people went to the hospital with various injuries. one of those victims is marcus weaver a virginia beach native, who now lives in colorado. he spoke to our affiliate wavy tv about what he snau the theater. >> you could hear the ricocheting off the seats, people screaming. it was utter chaos. when i was jumping over the seats to get to the exit there were people tram bell p elling over people lying on the ground. the most horrific scene i've ever seen. when i went outside, everyone was saying, hey, your shirt's bleeding. and i had a gunshot wound to my right shoulder. >> weaver is still recovering in the hospital. he said he's thankful he's alive and is praying for all the other victims. it sends shock waves through

the country as movie theaters prepare for one of the biggest weekends of the year. he and moviegoers say while the shooting is terrible, it shouldn't stop people from going to enjoy the movies. >> unfortunately. i think it's isolated. i don't think it's something that should change the movie theater industry as a practice. >> i did do a double take of should we be doing this, but i didn't want to alarm my kids and say too much. and just hope that nobody would do this again. >> movie theater managers say this is likely to be the biggest release of 2012. police say there are no similar threats to theaters in this area. parents are looking for advice on how to explain the tragedy to their children. dr. cindy mcdonald says that children should sit down with

their children to discuss the shooting. important to be honest and direct with kids while sharing age appropriate information. >> i don't believe in sugarcoating it. kids will overhear things the and fill in the blanks with the information they're looking for. >> she also suggests is when your kids are ready to go to the theater, parents should consider tagging along. president obama has ordered the american flag to be flown at half-staff out of respect for the victims in colorado. the flag will remain at half-staff until wednesday night. he and mitt romney have taken their campaign ads off the air in colorado for the time being. the campaign canceled multiple events. romney is still planning to head overseas next week. a planned trip to england, israel and poland. the battle for virginia's senate seat isn't slowing down. later this morning george allen

and tim kainewill square off in their official debate. candy crowley will moderate that debate. the latest polls show -- that came out thursday shows allen leading by two points but within the poll's margin of error. >> a redistricting map will go before voters in november. opponents gathered 59 thises this signatures. critics say the map approved by the democratically controlled general assembly amounts to gerrymandering. >> we're moving right along. make room on the roads. the event bringing 20 thises this people this weekend. gas pries are going up. what's causing this pain at the

expect delay on all five metro lines this weekend as crews will be working on projects. on the red line, the medical center and bethesda station are closed for structural repairs. the trains will travel through those stations but they continue won't stop. on the blue line at springfield. on the orange line single tracking between east and west falls church. greenline trains will single track between totten and prince george's plaza. riders can use the green line to complete their trip. everything should be back to normal for the monday morning commute. the recent drought that swept across the country could cause you a little more pain at the pump. the drought is damaging the corn crop which may force gas prices to go up. already the national average has jumped seven cents in just a week. now at $3.46.

two endangered cuban crocodiles have hatched at the national zoo. the births are very rare.
