make no mistake, okay, this apartment was designed, i say, based on everything i've seen to kill whoever entered it. >> the latest on the tragedy in colorado. police diffuse two bombs in the suspect's apartment but say the danger is far from over tonight. good evening, everyone. i'm jim rosenfield. in fact that apartment is still partially boopy trapd now and police say their suspect james holmes had been stockpiling ammunition for months. tonight live team coverage of the violence that unfolded in that movie theater. darcy spencer has more on the victim, they're stories of

heroism and heartbreak. we begin with jim gray, police wrapped up a news conference about an hour ago saying a delicate mission is still underway at this hour. jay? >> reporter: good evening. the movie theater behind me where the massacre took place still locked down by police tonight. tactical teams also searching the suspectal apartment despite explosives still inside looking for any clues, any evidence that might help to explain how and wipe this all happened. the investigation today is clearly centered on suspect james holmes' apartment where a bomb team initially worked through an intricate maze of wires. >> this apartment was designed, i say, based on everything i've seen, to kill whoever entered it. >> that could have been neighbor kaitlyn fonzie, who walked up to the door to explain about loud music playing inside about the same time holmes was allegedly terrorizing the packed theater. >> i definitely feel very luck they i had an instinct or impulse not to open that door.

it's scary how close i came to doing that. >> reporter: a fear justified. by this controlled blast. the sound of explosives being detonated inside. >> and you can see we're angry, we sure at hell are angry. what's happened to our city, what's happened to these wonderful people who live here and what he threatened to do to one of our police officers. >> reporter: as investigators search for vital clues and evidence in the apartment, we're getting a better picture now of some of the victims lost in the massacre. alex sullivan celebrating his 27th birthday at the movie. friday, his first wedding anniversary, would have been. 24 jrld jessica ghawi. 18-year-old a.j. boik, and stories of courage. matt died when he dove in front of bullets to save his girlfriend. navy petty first class officer lost his life the same way. >> john just took a bullet for me. i was thinking about what a

great hero he is, and, like -- he provided me the opportunity to survive through that, and he just knew, you know. >> reporter: a struggle to survive that is still very difficult for this shattered community. the emotions for so many here still very raw, as might imagine. back to the apartment for a second. police expect to allow some of the families that were evacuated back later this evening. those who live in the same complex as holmes, they could return sometime tomorrow. that's the latest, live here in aurora, colorado, i'm jay gray. now back to you. >> thank you, jay. we are starting to learn the names and see the faces of the victims of this tragedy. among those killed, a u.s. navy sailor, and an aspiring sportscaster and as you heard, a man who died saving his girlfriend. darcy spencer in the newsroom with a look at some of these people whose lives ended way too soon. darcy? >> reporter: among the victim, a 6-year-old girl excited about

starting her first swimming lessons. then a former member of the military who protected his girlfriend, shielding her from bullets telling her to get down and stay down. he didn't make it out of that theater alive. she did. and sharing the story of her hero. >> my gosh. i think john just took a bullet for me, i was thinking about what a great hero he is. >> reporter: jensen young told savannah guthrie her boyfriend threw her to the floor inside that aurora colorado movie theater, pushed her under the seat and covered her as the gunman opened fire. he was among the dozen killed. she survived. >> he saved me and gave me the opportunity to live. he would have done it for anyone that day. you know, the nearest person sitting next to him, he would have been, this person needs my help now. >> reporter: authorities are identifying the dead. among them 6-year-old veronica moser, her movie was wounded and

paralyzed. the child's aunt says ashley doesn't know that her daughter is dead, that the focus is on her own survival. she has bullets lodged in her throat and stomach. >> a 25-year-old girl gets shot, and her whole life, nobody can tell her her daughter's dead. that's all she's asking about right now. her whole life is changed in a flash for what? >> reporter: blogger and aspire be sports reporter, 24-year-old jessica ghawi also died in the shooting. she escaped a mall shooting in toronto just last month. >> had a passion for life and it showed. it showed in everything she did. >> reporter: police say the shooter, 24-year-old james h holmes left dozens injured, some critically. >> wounds to the neck, head, chest and abdomen. >> reporter: those recovering are having a hard time dealing with what happened. >> a muscle flash of the gun, at the time i thought it was still

fireworks, then i got hit here and realized it was, you know, something much more serious. >> reporter: now, police believe she ve identified all of the victims and made notifications to family members. autopsies showed each victim died from gunshot wounds. back to you. >> darcy, thanks. here at home, police in d.c., maryland and virginia are stepping up patrols at local theaters after the tragedy in colorado. in alexandria, police car visible outside the regal theater, ems and fire also seen outside the regal theater at gallery place. despite the increased security, we still found long lines of people waiting to see the batman movie. >> i think this is our way of showing, pushing through this tragedy and saying we are very sorry and really sorry. i was looking at some of this this morning of some of the people injured and died and what happened yesterday. but this is kind of what america is. >> d.c. police are reminding people to say vigilant and

report any suspicious activities to authorities right away. today, "dark knight" star christian bale released this statement saying words cannot express the horror that i feel. i cannot begin to truly understand the pain and grief of the victims and their loved ones, but my heart goes out to them. in a show of solidarity, all major hollywood stud yoers withholding numbers. warner brothers will wait until monday ton release. and other studios decided to do the same thing out of respect for the families. box office estimates are usually released on sunday. stay with news 4 for continuing coverage of the tragedy in colorado. we'll have constant updates on nbcwashington.com and police enter the suspect's bib trapd apartme boobytrapped apartment. another controversy at penn state. the reason crowds are flocking tostatue.

tim kaine and george allen squared off in the first debate since the virginia senate primaries last month. that took place of business at the virginia bar association meeting in hot springs. the former governors accused each other of partisanship while listing examples of their own ability to cross the aisle. quinnipiac poll released showed the candidates are deadlocked. the race closely watched because it could be a factor in determining the balance of power in the senate. a decision expected soon in the future of the joe paterno statue at penn state university. the tribute to the late coach has drawn controversy since an internal investigation imp pla kamted paterno in the cover-up of a sex abuse scandal. the statue is drawing crowds. some are there to protect it. penn state president rodney erickson will make the final call. coming up next, chuck will tell us if this dreary weather will continue for sunday. we'll be right back.

the international aids conference is kicking off here in washington this week. today as a d.c. school, young people were recruited for a new effort in the fight against the deadly disease. the ultimate goal is in aids-free generation. derrick ward has the report. >> reporter: today's event at the multicultural high school in the northwest was aimed at bringing home and international message and theme of this year's conference about empowering young people to take a leadership role in preventing aids. u.s. secretary of health and human services being osebelius how it will wor. >> grass roots project involving student athletes from gw and howard and georgetown, going into middle schools talking to kids. >> reporter: she was on the field in the school today one of the means to ending the number of aids case stemming the tide early among young people and the campaign uses music like from this brazilian group. a safe-sex song that doesn't lose much in translation.

the 70-degree mark outside. in fact 70 on the nose at the airport. high so far for the day, only 71 degrees. that equals june the 5th and june the 18th for our coolest day of the summer. a high of only 71. a nice change of pace. unfortunately, there were probably a lot of folks that had weddings and outdoor plans for today that didn't cooperate with your plans, but a lot of us really tired of the heat enjoyed the break. 68 in manassas and 71 in annapolis. nice and cloudy and cool all over the area. you're evening planner, temperatures aren't going to do much. holding steady in the upper 60s to around 70. clouds and drizzle for now staying damp through at least 9:00 or 10:00. closer to midnight most drizzle and light rain starting to end. tomorrow if you're going to the baseball game, the braves and national, first pitch at 1:35 tomorrow. sunshine will be making a comeback on your sunday with a

temperature around 80 degrees by 1:00 tomorrow afternoon. here it is on storm 4 radar. it hasn't been a lot of rain. it's just been a little bit of rain spread over a long number of hours. that's going to continue here as the drizzle continues to persist now into portions of prince george's county headed towards annapolis in the gloomiest part of area much of date east of washington and west of the bay, but fairly wet around much of fairfax count out towards chantilly and leesburg and reston, all getting in on the clouds and drizzle for much of the day. this is all going to continue to push its way on out. down to our south is where the real heavy weather has been today. thunderstorms across southeastern virginia down into parts of north carolina. so for us, clouds are here for now. drizzle slowly coming to an end. start to see sunshine back by mid to late morning tomorrow for most. by afternoon time for the rest. what about going to the beach? clouds at the beach tomorrow, but turning bet around better as beach weather goes into monday and tuesday. so overnight, us, what you see is what you get.

speaking of good shots, 25-year-old native of india, number 9. paul mcginley aced the same hole. here you go again, 16 years later's it is in there for a hole in one. that is his open debut. heck of a memory. all right, snedeker, leader after 36 holes. bogey week until this. like a gimme? not so much. he misses. that's on 5. starts a stretch of four bogeys and five hole, yet still tied for second with this guy, graeme mcdowell, long putt on 14. and he drains it to give him back-to-back birdies. mcdowell shoods a 3 under 67. at 7 under for the tournament and will be in tomorrow's final pairing. must be the purple. tiger woods bogeyed to have the first three holes. 50 feet away. i mean, 50 feet away and this guy drains it for a birdie. tiger with an even par 70 at 6 under in fourth. five shots back of the lead, of course, looking for his 15th major title.
