70 manassas and leesburg. the clouds will give way to sunshine. temperatures today show should make it into the 70s and low 80s. if you like 90 and humid, the seven-day forecast is coming up. >> thanks. new today, penn state university has taken down the late coach joe paterno's statue outside of beaver stadium. it will be put into storage. the crews are taking the statue down. this is a time lapse video from former penn state football coach bradley. before dawn, they barricaded the streets and put up a chain link fence and threw a blue tarp over the figure. an internal investigation found that paterno was a cover-up in the jerry sandusky abuse scandal. the statue of joe paterno outside beaver stadium has become a lightning rod of controversy and a national debate including the role of

big-time sports and life. the freeh report has i hagiven loot to reflect on. and pope benedict said he's deeply shocked by the mass shooting in colorado and in the meantime, president obama heads to aurora to pay tribute to the victims and we are learning more about the 12 moviegoers killed. jay gray is in aurora with a look at the day ahead. >> reporter: president obama will travel to colorado later today to visit with the families of the victims of the massacre and this evening there will be a citywide service. as the stack of candles and flowers continues to grow. honoring the injured and the fallen. among the dead, alex sullivan, celebrating his 27th birthday at the movie. today would have been his first wedding anniversary. jessica gau hi, and alex teves

was in grad school. jess i can childress and john larimer were also killed. >> he was an outstanding shipmate. a valued member of our navy team. and an extremely dedicated sailor. >> reporter: 51-year-old gordon cowden was the oldest victim. veronica moser the youngest. her mom still unaware, and paralyzed with gunshot wounds to the neck and abdomen. 26 victims are in area hospitals, nine still in critical condition dealing with the pain of their wounds and the emotional scars which could take even longer to heal. >> how does somebody do this? i just don't understand it. >> reporter: police and federal agents are trying to understand as much as they can about the killing spree. detonating a stash of bombs pulled from holmes' apartment, a place that's the primary focus

of an fbi evidence search team team searching for any clue to help them figure out how and why it happened. police may let the people evacuated from holm's apartment building back inside today. a bomb team successfully executed what they are calling a controlled detonation of a triggering device. they found dozens of fireworks inside the apartment. investigators say the apartment was rigged to explode when anyone opened the door. holmes started playing loud music right before he left for the movie theater. a neighbor said she knocked on his door to complain. >> i definitely feel very lucky that i had an instinct or an impulse not to open that door. and it's very scary how close i came to doing that. >> this apartment was designed i say based on everything i have seen to kill whoever entered it. >> police took all the hazardous

materials to an undisclosed location where they were detonated. right now, james holmes is being held in solitary confinement for his own protection. he is awaiting the first court appearance tomorrow. meanwhile, investigators try to figure out what made him go on a rampage. he was a candidate at the university of colorado, but he was trying to withdraw from the program. school officials say he made a presentation in may about the biological basis for psychiatric and neurological disorders. a mishap last night at the preparty for the teen choice awards triggered fears of the movie theater shooting. people packed the avalon club to see midnight red when thick smoke appeared. people panicked thinking it was tear gas like the kind used in the shooting in colorado, but that was not the case at all. a fog machine malfunctioned, making it difficult to see and breathe. the fire department cancelled that concert. police are stepping up

security at local movie theaters following the shooting in colorado. they remind moviegoers to report any suspicious activities. despite the increased security, we found long lines of people waiting to see "the dark knight rises." in our next half hour items bought by the suspected gunman in the weeks before the mass shooting in colorado. plus, much more on the investigation and victims can be found at nbcwashington.com. today, hundreds of aids activists will gather in the nation's capital for the start of the international aids conference. news4's derrick ward has more on the first of many remembrance ceremonies that's underway now. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, indeed, this is sort of the unofficial kickoff of the conference. we are here on the mall. and what they'll do is lay out the aids quilt. they haven't done it yet. the ground is kind of wet. but they mplan to do it later weather permitting.

able to locate katherine jackson. popular recording artist usher is grieving today. the star's stepson has died two weeks after he was critically injured in a jet ski accident. the 11-year-old kyle glove was the son of his ex-wife, tameka fost foster. he was involved while riding in an inner tube earlier this month. a family friend who was riding a jet ski lost control and collided with the inner tube. an air force instructor will spend 20 years in prison for the involvement in the sweeping sex scandal with new recruits. a military jury at lackland air force base found louis walker guilty on several charges including rape. he cried during the sentencing hearing yesterday. he is among six instructors charged with sexual misconduct involving trainees. for first time in u.s.

military history hundreds of gay and lesbian service members marched in the gay pride parade. about 300 soldiers, sailors, marines and other members marched yesterday in san diego. some wore full uniforms and others wore t-shirts representing their branch of the military. normally the military does not allow the members to march in parades but the defense department made an exception for this in san diego. a fund-raising for a bus monitor bullied raised more than $700,000. donation for the 68-year-old karen klein broke records and 4% will go to the website indigo go. and the remaining 3% goes to credit card processing fees. klein is staking more than $654,000. she's probably going to disneyland. >> a lot of people were affected by that video. not surprising that so many decided to donate. >> there were donations from

tarp you can see there over the figure. this comes after the wake of an investigation that showed he was part of the cover-up of the jerry sandusky sexual abuse scandal. and president obama will travel to aurora today to visit with the families of the victims of the massacre. later today thousands of people including the governor of colorado are expected to attend a citywide memorial service. the people evacuated from the suspect's apartment building may be able to get back inside their homes today after the bomb squad detonated explosives in that home. this morning here are the numbers, 26 people are still in the hospital. nine of them are in critical condition. >> darcy spencer has more on the victims who gave their lives to protect their loved ones. it looks like we don't have that story ready just yet. we'll get you that information soon. of course a lot of these victims who are being remembered. some are young children.

there was a moment when, you know, i felt like, wow, this might be the end. >> reporter: darcy spencer, news4 today. >> police say the suspected gunman james holmes had been planning the attack for at least two months. a sales receipt indicates he bought some tactical gear online from a missouri based company. they sell knives and vests and it shows he purchased $300 worth of gear in early july. police say he bought a scope for an assault rifle at a gun store in colorado three weeks ago. >> i just had a weird feeling that he was just that guy shouldn't be buying that type of gun. he had kind of a weird aura about him, i guess. >> holmes will make his first court appearance tomorrow. president obama spoke directly to the victims' families during his address. he said it can be difficult to understand. >> the federal government stands

welcome back, everybody. now 9:46 on your sunday morning. cloudy skies await you on your way out the door this morning but sunshine should be making a comeback before the day is through. already you can tell that clouds have a different height and a different shape than the ones that we saw yesterday. yesterday, they were real low to the ground and full of not a whole lot of texture. today you can start to see little breaks showing up out there. doesn't look like a whole lot. but any time you see the little fragments like that, shows they're trying their hardest to break up. the sunshine is 5,000 feet straight up and it will burn through this layer of moisture and allow for at least peeks of

sunshine by later on this afternoon. if the sun does its job fast enough, we'll have full sunshine by 4:00 or 5:00. it's a real humid start. having been on the front lawn, i can promise you it feels humid out there. 70 degrees in camp springs and pran did wine, maryland. and 70 degrees at dulles airport. 72 in leesburg and beautiful upperville and middle burg out in loudoun county. temperatures on their way up here into the low and mid 70s. storm 4 radar shows not a whole lot of rain to worry about. sprinkles across maryland up into west virginia. i think anybody that's going to have a chance for seeing a rain drop today will be along into the west of the blue ridge mountains. east of the mountains the rain chances are not zero, but extremely low. even with the clouds not really rain-making clouds. big thunderstorms late last

lahood will make the announcement tomorrow morning. on friday the department announced it's giving $10 million for the bicycle project. no on wednesday, mitt romney will leave for his first overseas trip since clinching his party's nomination. he will visit the united kingdom, israel and poland. his campaign says romney will not explicitly criticize president obama's foreign policy while abroad, however, he plans to raise money while traveling. he will attend the opening ceremony for the olympic games in london. we know that that's just five days away. it seems like we have been waiting forever. >> the excitement is really building. except for the 20 local athletes who will participate there. should be exciting to see them. >> we have had a chance to profile a lot of the athletes. we want to remind you can go online and download the app and watch the olympic events live, but find out more about the athletes and about the schedule.
