at this hour still, like some of you have done in your careers, are at the bedside in this case of their children, not knowing for certain what the outcome will be. >> president obama visited victims in the hospital last night in colorado, but left before the massive vigil. thousands of people attended that vigil to pay their respects. candles were lit and flowers were left for the victims. the mayor of aurora said, quote, while our hearts are broken, our community is not. stay with nbc and nbcwashington.com for continuing coverage as we learn more about the shooting suspect and the victims. we'll have a live report from colorado coming up at 6:00. here in the district, a hate crime investigation is under way after a night out for a gay couple ended in a brutal beating. it happened early yesterday morning. news 4's pat collins is live at howard university hospital where one of the victims is still recovering. pat?

>> reporter: pat, one of the victims had to undergo surgery here today. now, this happened sunday morning just after midnight. a gay couple walking down the sidewalk, jumped and beaten by a group of teenagers. police say they're investigating this as a hate crime. inside howard university hospital 29-year-old michael hall, junior, operated on today. they say he has a broken jaw and a fractured cheek bone. mike and gail hall are from colonial beach, virginia, very proud of their son mike, junior, an accomplished yoga instructor. when he moved to washington nine years ago, they worried for his safety. >> every morning get up and turn channel 4 news on see if he was alive or not, who got killed, stabbed. >> you wore worried about him? >> my god, yes. >> my biggest nightmare is the fact that this would happen eventually. >> reporter: sunday morning the

halls got that phone call that they always feared. it happened in the ek inning ton section of northeast washington. mike hall and his boyfriend had been to a restaurant. they were on their way home. they had just gotten out of one of those town cars, they were walking down the sidewalk when they were ambushed, ambushed by about five teenagers. >> four or five kids just came out of nowhere without any warning. we didn't think it was a robbery because they didn't immediately ask for anything, they just came out swinging and hitting. >> reporter: a woman and her boyfriend got the two men to safety. later an ambulance came and took mike hall to the hospital for treatment. >> do you think you were attacked because you're gay? >> i don't know. i can't think of another reason other thanks like, we got out of a fancy town car and we were walking in a not great part of town at a late hour. i mean, you know, we were probably holding hands. it could have been because we're gay, but i don't know that for sure.

>> it's so unnecessary in this day and age when everybody could just get along. >> reporter: some local youg ga studios are holding charity classes to help raise money to pay for mike hall's medical expenses. live in northeast, pat collins, news 4. >> thank you, pat. crippling sanctions against penn state football today in the wake of the jerry sandusky sex abuse scandal and subsequent coverup. while the school escaped the death penalty, the ncaa slapped it with a $60 million fine. college sports governing body also stripped the school of 14 years of wins taking away joe paterno's title as the winningest division 1 coach of all time. the team also banned from postseason bowl games for four years and has a four-year scholarship cap. current players are given a waiver that will let them transfer to other schools and play immediately. the school is also on probation for five years.

>> no price the ncaa can levy will repair the grievous damage inflicted by jerry sandusky on his victims. however, we can make clear that the culture, actions and inactions that allowed them to be victimized will not be tolerated in collegiate athletics. >> jerry sandusky will spend the rest of his life in prison. the family of the late hall of fame coach joe paterno says the ncaa's sanctions defame his legacy and are, quote, a panicked response to the scandal. today's tough sanctions could devastate one of the top programs in college football. the penalties are getting a lot of reaction from penn state alumni in our area. christ gordon is here with that story. chris? >> good evening. today i spoke with long-time alumni and recent graduates. most are heartbroken, not because of the sanctions or what they do to the football program, but because it has hurt the legacy of penn state, the university they say they love and for which they say they

bleed blue and white. adrianna rivas works in alexandria, virginia, her first job since graduating last year from penn state university. she says she's still proud of the school and feels today's sanctions are unfair. >> i was surprised and almost pretty angry about how harsh the ncaa has punished penn state. i think it punishes the wrong people. right now i think penn state is looking towards healing and going forward. i think it punishes the current football students. >> reporter: when penn state alumni who have settled in our area and can't make to it a football game want to watch the nittany lions, they have a half dozen bars and restaurants to view the games in our area, including this one. union jack's in boston. >> penn state always has a great crowd. they come in and give us a great business.

hopefully they skill come in and have the school spirit. >> reporter: some people who didn't go to penn state feel today's sanctions are justified. others say it punishes current stew departments and athletes there. >> the school is being punished and you're part of that punishment and you had no control over it. >> reporter: what is your reaction to the sanctions against penn state university. >> i think they were justified mainly because of the extreme money thrown around in college sports which is a corrupting influence. >> now, just before the start of the new football season, penn state players will each have to decide whether to stay and play for the it inially any lions or transfer to another school and play for another team. brack to you. virginia is asking for federal disaster assistance after the powerful storm that killed 15 people and left more than a million others without power. state and local governments spent $27.5 million recovering from the storm at the end of june.

that doesn't include the price of damage to private property. if approved, virginia could be reimbursed for activating emergency crews, opening shelters as well as removing all the debris. after a weekend with a lot of rain, there is more on the radar right now. storm 4 chief meteorologist doug kammerer has the first forecast. >> we are watching some showers and thunderstorms out there. not many around our area. some locations have seen a couple of sprinkles today. that's about it. we're sitting at 89 degrees at the airport with mostly cloudy skies. we've seen a lot of clouds across the area. this is the highest temperature we've seen today. also a little on the humid side. humidity up to 52%. wednesday out of the west at 6 miles per hour. what are we going to be seeing? temperatures shape up this way, looking at 88 in leesburg, but only 82 in frederick and gaithersburg, down to the south where we have seen more sunshine. temperatures have been able to get above the 90-degree mark. fredricksburg coming in at 91 degrees. the radar picture showing where the storms are.

food and drug administration has approved two new cancer drugs. one treats patients with advanced breast cancer. it's called after fin tore for post menopausal women whose cancers were caused by something known as hormone receptor

positive disease. in clinical trials the drug shrank tumors that became resistant to previous medications. the fda also approved kai parole liss to treat advanced cases of bone marrow cancer. that drug shrank tumors when other therapies stopped working. some of the world's leading researchers in aids are in town for a conference. their presence is significant as the city struggled with an alarming unfex rate. 3% of adults between 15 and 49 are living with the disease. >> reporter: just yesterday at an event for the aids memorial quilt, the director of the d.c. department of health highlighted some of the progress made in dealing with aids. >> in the city, the death rate, the infection rate from needles, intravenous drug users have dropped by almost 80%. >> reporter: while those numbers

are encouraging, there are more numbers that are much lessen couraging. they say per capita compared to some third world countries the aids rate in washington is actually higher. that's here in the shadow of the nation's capital. similar comparisons have been made for years despite innovative and controversial measures. condom distribution in schools and the needle exchange. d.c.'s mayor vincent gray says the city's rate of 3% is high but in the ironic calculus that prevails, the number is higher because of advances. >> life is being preserved. >> reporter: for many there's a sense that factors beyond medicine come into play. nancy bernstein with the national aids housing coalition. >> there's powerful research that documents that when people are stably housed they engaged in less risky sex behaviors and can adhere and access to treatment. that's really the key. >> reporter: still the numbers reverberate with those on the

million people living with hiv and aids around the world. turning now to the weather, so, doug, are we not done with the rain? >> there's just a few showers out there right now. we've seen a lot of rain over the past couple of days, much-needed rain. here is something the rain may do for us. on thursday we could hit a high of 99, maybe 100. because of the rain the past couple days, we may not get as high as last week. does that make sense? >> we'll be thanking you for the rain. >> the rain will help to keep us cooler over the next few days if you can understand that. as far as the temperatures go today, we reached a high temperature of 89 degrees under partly to mostly cloudy skies, if not cloudy skies, just about all day long. that's exactly what we have out there right now. we'll call it mostly cloudy with a crept temperature of 89 degrees. we have seen a little sunshine at least at the airport over the last hour. that has allowed us to hit that 89-degree mark. temperatures right now one degree above our average high of

88. winds out of the west at 6 miles per hour. look at the temperatures around the region. you can tell where the clouds have been. 82 in frederick, 84 in martinsburg, 84 in galters burg. down to the south where we've seen more sunshine, 93 degrees. charlottesville at 77. not only clouds there but also rain as well. you can see on storm 4 radar, not much in the way of shower activity. we have a couple towards winchester along i-81. more rain towards the charlottesville area. that's moving south and east and away from our area. you can also see strong storms around philadelphia. i want you to take a look at these storms. big-time storms in southeastern pennsylvania. big-sometime storms down to our south around charlottesville, roanoke and richmond. notice no storms around washington. why is that? because of the cloud cover we saw out there. look at the clouds. we've been socked in all day long. we still have the clouds there.

without the sunshine to give us that extra energy those storms needed, we have stayed during the dry side today and not seen any of those strong to severe storms develop. tomorrow, however, i think that could be a little bit of a different story. first off, humid and stormy down to our south. this is through 7:00 a.m., on the muggy side, humid as you step out. tomorrow, possible thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon with more heat. i think we do get back into the low to mid 90s tomorrow ahead of this frontal boundary. that front will produce a chance for severe weather. as it moves to our south, say good-bye and say hello to the sunshine and hello to really nice weather. wednesday is looking fantastic with plenty of sunshine, highs in the upper 80s and low humidity. i think wednesday is going to be by far the best day of the week. this evening mostly cloudy, isolated showers, warm and humid. temperatures 79 to about 83 degrees. as we move through to night and in through tomorrow morning, a few clouds to start off the morning hours. it will be on the muggy side,

but a nice start to your tuesday. temperatures 68 to about 76 degrees. winds will be light out of the west at about five miles per hour. tomorrow afternoon, possibly strong storms. going for highs of 92 to 96 degrees. that's on the hot side. watch what happens as we move through the next couple days, especially down towards the beaches. how about this weather? looking good tuesday, wednesday and thursday. it will get on the warm side. not all that bad. here is the next four days showing temperatures moving back to about 99 on thursday. 92 on friday. but once again, wednesday looking great. >> good to know. >> the beach is where you want to be when it's warm. >> yeah, i'm back. >> and excited about it. >> thank you, doug. still ahead, the online scam targeting the sellers, not the buyers. also weather could play a major factor in volleyball at the olympic games. in sports he was part of an olympic champion track team.

maryland coach andrew val man is headed to the london olympics in a different role and he tells dan hellie all about it.

>> almost here. let the games begin. >> i start crying just hearing the music and we haven't had an olympic moment just yet. i'm very emotional about sports. i don't cry about anything else. the olympics, yes. d.c. will definitely be well represented in london as the olympic games open this weekend. it's not just local athletes who are making the trek. university of maryland track coach andrew valmon will be

headed across the pond as well. valmon already won olympic gold in '88 and '92. when selected, valmon wasn't sure he was going to be able to go. at the time university of maryland was threatening to shut down his track program due to funding. dan hellie tells us that's all worked out now and valmon is ready to pack his bags. >> truly difficult. one of the things i try to do is balance it. the women's program was obviously safe. i went back and forth with how am i going to balance potentially being the men's head coach at olympics and not having a men's program but having a women's program. are we going to raise that much money in a short period of time? it was only six months. now i can take a sigh of relief and we get phase two to get the program set for the future. >> reporter: it's andrew's past that will help him coach this year's team. being a two-time olympic gold medal winner himself.

>> made the job, the transition seamless because i remember my experiences, some of the good ones and some of the tough ones. i made sure i wouldn't make those mistakes again. >> andrew valmon has given the u.s. a lead off the first leg. >> instant credibility with the guys? >> yeah, you look at them and you've been there. when you talk about the call room where you have to sit and stair at your competition for 15 or 20 minutes. i can tell them that's the time you have to get into the zone, not a lot of face time. find your little zone and really kind of zone out with everyone else. >> what's going to be the biggest challenge for your runners at the olympics in general? >> kind of being, making sure they're not taking it too close to home. london is not too far. for the most part the majority of the athletes have a lot of family coming. we want to help them minimize distractions and focus on the task at hand first. >> reporter: for andrew, the tallest task will be balancing

all his duties in life, maryland track coach, olympic track coach, father and husband. at least his wife meredith rainy understands his olympic calling because she's a former olympian herself which makes their household a very interesting place. >> competitive environment. we try to minimize some of the stuff with our kids. we've got three kids. we're competitive. she's really competitive in everything she does. obviously ran in two games. she's the olympic trials meet record holder. we joke about who is a better athlete in the house. at the same time we want to make sure we keep our kids grounded as well. >> don't forget, dan is in london covering the games from our favorite olympic sports to our local hopefuls, hellie has you covered. look for his report starting this thursday. the opening ceremony is friday here on nbc4. they're going to try to top beijing. it will be hard to do.

a fast forward through the headlines. james holmes, the colorado man accused in friday's deadly theater shooting faced a judge today for the first time since the attack. his hair dyed bright orange and red, just like the gunman witnesses described to police. he appeared to struggle to stay awake at times during the brief

procedural hearing. charges will likely come next monday. the ncaa hit penn state with crippling sanctions today in the wake of jerry sandusky sex abuse scandal and subsequent coverup. the punishment includes a $60 million fine. the school has been stripped of 14 years of wins, banned from postseason bowl games and it's on probation for the next five years. the school says it will comply with all of those conditions. d.c. police investigating a weekend attack on a gay couple as a hate crime. group of teens allegedly beat up michael hall junior and his boyfriend in northeasterly yesterday morning. hall, a local yoga teacher still recovering in the hospital from a broken jaw and cheek bone. so far no arrests in this case. now let's fast forward to the weather. the weather out there right now not too bad. temperatures on the mild side. a little humidity in the atmosphere. highs today only in the upper 80s for most of us. we have a couple of light showers in northern fauquier county, also back towards

frederick county, virginia. that's about it. most of this activity has been well to our north and south as a result of the cloud cover we saw. those clouds helping to keep us more stable today. giving us less of a chance of showers and thunderstorms. i do think, however, we'll see a return to both the heat and the stronger storms as we make our way through the day tomorrow and then into the rest of the week, too. we'll talk more about that in just a minute. an arrest in the stabbing death of a woman in prince george's county. police found her body inside a home in berwyn heights on sunday. today they say she knew her killer and she feared for her safety. news 4's darcy spencer has more. >> reporter: police say 36-year-old amber chenault was found dead in the basement of her home on 57th avenue in berwyn heights around 3:30 sunday afternoon. police responded after receiving a call from someone who was concerned about her welfare. >> once they got here, they had to force entry into the home.

and they discovered the victim in the basement suffering from lacerations to her neck. >> reporter: police developed 37-year-old andrew kugler as a suspect. police spotted him this morning and followed him in his car to the college park metro station, three miles from the crime scene. police say when the suspect got out of his car, he had already slit both of his wrists. he was taken to the hospital where he remains under police guard until he's well enough to be taken to jail. this is a photo of the slick tim on a local car dealership website where she used to work. police and neighbors say the couple had a history of domestic problems. police say cueing her was arrested for arresting chenault after a bizarre incident. she got a protective order against kugler. >> i feel real bad for the folks and for the girl it happened to. you know, it's not indicative of the town.

it's a very unusual thing. >> reporter: officials say this was the first murder in berwyn heights in 21 years. >> this town is very safe and wonderful community. this is as isolated case. usually a situation like this does not occur in berwyn heights. >> reporter: darcy spencer, news 4. montgomery county police cracked a 25-year-old cold case using dna evidence. a woman was raped in her silver spring apartment back in 1987. police took dna samples at the time but there was no match until this month when dna tests linked the crime to a man named william david trice. he committed suicide two years ago while in jail for another rape. his dna was linked to that case as well. man is under arrest for the alleged armed robbery and arrest. police arrested june branch today. he's 21 years old, accused of attacking a woman at gunpoint in the 1900 block of 18th street

southeast. he's charged with armed sex assault and robbery. d.c. mayor vincent gray battled a new accusation of wrongdoing by his 2010 campaign for mayor. "the washington post" reports gray's campaign may have improperly used government lists of public housing residents to boost his vote totals. tom sherwood has this story. >> this is a side issue to the federal investigation of gray, but it is another headache for him. >> hiv infection -- >> reporter: mayor vincent gray monday opened the international aids conference in washington as protesters complained about the need for more housing for aids patients. reporters surrounded gray, but not just asking about aids housing. "the washington post" citing unnamed sources reported gray's 2010 campaign recruited voters off official lists of public housing residents to boost his vote totals, a potential violation of law. mayor gray unlike his silence on the federal probe aggressively

reacted monday saying he knew of no such lists and didn't need it given his long career in housing issues. >> i can go through and name you leaders in virtually every public housing development in the city. i don't need a list to do that. i wouldn't need a list. i didn't even know a list existed. i wouldn't need a list because i know people. we trust each other. we work together. >> reporter: the post also noted that his son carlos has a management job at the d.c. department of housing where such a list would be kept. the housing department monday announced it would review the post allegation and promise strong action if any wrongdoing is found. carlos gray declined to speak to news 4 but told the post he was not involved with obtaining the list. mayor gray defended his son. >> any thoughts about your son being mentioned? >> i believe with my son. i've been with my son all my life as your might imagine. he's hard working. he's a young man of integrity and he's very committed to the city. >> mayor gray said anyone with

get ready to spend more money on your next flight. over the weekend united announced it will raise base fares by $10 per round trip flight within the u.s. and within hours, most other major airlines, they followed suit. delta, american, us airways and jetblue are also raising fares. southwest fawill raise fares as well. this is the first one since march, but the fourth this year. federal investigations are under way into two of chrysler's top-selling vehicles. the national highway transportation safety administration is looking at dodge rams made in 2009 and

2010. there's concern that the rear wheels can lock up which can cause crashes. there's also a problem with the 2012 jeep grand cherokee. there have been reports that a power industrialing fluid leak can cause engine fires. the investigations affect more than 30,000 vehicles. a recall could be issued once the investigations are complete. selling your stuff online is an easy way to get rid of things that you don't want anymore. but it's also the place scam artists target. liz crenshaw is here with a warning. >> jim, just when you get all excited that someone wants to buy something you're selling online, you end up losing out on the deal through a bogus check scam. the federal trade commission tells us it received more than 43,000 complaints about check scams just last year, and online sellers get duped every day. >> i buy and sell all the time. >> reporter: michael rad disturns to websites like ebay and craigslist when he wants to

get rid of something or is looking for someing to buy. the reason we're talking is there's several people out there trying to take advantage of people's good nature. i have been the attempted victim of two scams. >> reporter: the first time raditz was trying to sell ten sets of french door locks similar to these. he posted his ad on e boy bai and got a bite. >> i'm contacted by a buyer who says they want all ten locks and they're going to send me a check. i sent them a note saying i take paypal. and that's the only way i do business. they said, send me a check and i said five. >> when the check came, it was made out for $2,980, nearly six times more than raditz is asking. >> what he wanted me to do was cash the check, take the money out for the locks and shipping, box all the material up and mail

it to him along with the balance of the cash which he wanted me to wire back to him. >> raditz was suspicious so he told the bank the check was a fake. >> it came back as fraudulent. >> this is the kind of scheme that smart people fall for. >> charles hardwood is the deputy director for the bureau of consumer protection. >> you won't be able to tell a counterfeit check from the real check when you see it. >> reporter: it can take up to four weeks for a check to fully clear. but law requires banks to credit you the money quicker, and that's the catch. if you deposit a phony check and wire the extra money back to the sender -- >> when the bank discovers that check is fake, they're going to come back to you and they're going to insist you make good on the money -- >> reporter: the second time he got hit with a fake check, he was selling a tandem bike on craigslist.

his ad was asking $455, the check, $2,650 and a request to wire the extra money back to the buyer. >> they asked me to return the balance to western union, and there is just no way that i'm doing that for anyone. >> somebody is smart out there. the ftc says it's continuously working with law enforcement to stop such scams but says this kind of scam is hard to eliminate. if you think you've received a bogus check or have fallen victim to an online buyer file a complaint with the ftc or your local attorney general's office. red flags out there. you know it's happening every day. >> generally, if the check amount doesn't match the amount you've been up -- >> if you've been trying to sell that thing for a long time, you're just like, yippie! >> doug is here to fill us in on the latest weather. >> did you like today? >> i liked today. >> did you like 82 the other day, yesterday? >> yes. >> did you like 71 on saturday? >> loved it.

northern portions of howard county around baltimore. most of us remaining on the dry side. areas towards philadelphia, big-time stores there. down toward the south around the richmond area, they're both seeing storms. our cloud cover today actually held our severe thunderstorm risk down. that's very good news for us. we don't need to see more storms. tomorrow, however, we have a better chance of the storms rebuilding and firing over our region. something else that's going building, the heat. these warnings, these oranges and pinks back here to the west around st. louis, omaha, this is where the heat is right now. these are excessive heat watches and warnings, also heat advisories. i expect this heat to move our way during the day tomorrow and es spshldly into the day on thursday with, of course, wednesday between. wednesday looking great. but that's about the only day right now that really looks very nice. future weather forecast showing the warm conditions. a few showers around president overnight tonight we'll break out of that, see a nice start for tomorrow. i think low to mid 90s tomorrow with the frontal boundary coming across our region.

a few thunderstorms tomorrow, could be strong, maybe severe. we'll have to watch out for that. then on your wednesday, nice weather. the hot weather just down to our south and west, but i think wednesday will be very nice. i think we'll see low humidity on wednesday with a lot of sunshine. wednesday is looking spectacular. the heat, however, builds back in during the day on thursday. so we're going to watch out for that very, very closely over the next couple days. next couple days showing 89 on that wednesday. once again, very nice. here comes the heat. i'm going for a high of 99. we could reach 100 once again. let's keep it around 99 for right now. it is goings to be on the humid side, too, with a good chance of strong to potentially severe storms late in the day on thursday. we have two chances for severe storms, one tomorrow, a better chance on thursday i think and some run-of-the-mill thunderstorm activity friday and into saturday. we stay on the warm side tlrks but at least right now, just a couple of really hot days. not a streak. >> all right, thanks. let's take a look at some of

jury selection began today in the trial of drew peterson. he's the former suburban police officer accused in the drowning death of his third wife. >> peterson has been locked up for the last three years awaiting trial. charlie woej how ski has more on today's proceedings. >> reporter: after two long years of legal wrangling, the trial of drew peterson is under way. >> the most significant part of the day was starting. that's finally starting.
