you are cal run kin jr. police warn her kidnapper on the loose and armed. he held her up at her home, forced her into a car and forced her to drive around for hours. pat has the latest. >> reporter: neighbors is a she went almost every morning to mcdonald's for breakfast. the gunman was waiting. did he know who he was kidnapping? violet ripken, 74-year-old mohr of orioles star cal ripken. she was kidnapped, tied up, blindfo blindfolded, held for 24 hours before she was released this morning just a couple blocks from her aberdeen home. gus lives next door. he talked to mrs. ripken right after she got free. >> yeah, i talked to her this

the case. the former neuroscience graduate student apparently told investigators about a package he had sent to the university of colorado's mel campus in aurora. police found it in the mailroom, unopened. inside they found what is described as details about tilling people. >> i'm overwhelmed by this. good people taken. >> people like gordon cowden, the oldest victim of the massacre took his two teenage daughters to the movie. they survived. he was laid to rest, the first of at least 2 funerals. >> i need officers on the east side. >> reporter: after the chaos and killing at the theater, there are now growing questions in this grieving community about what will happen to the crime scene. some say it should be torn down and replaced by a memorial.

tanning beds can increase your risk of skin cancer. they looked at 20 different studies between 1981 and 2011. they found those who used those tanning booths had a 20% increased risk of melanoma. that risk increased for those who started use the tanning machines before age 35. here in the u.s., the food & drug administration is considering a ban on tanning booths for people under 18. >> no need for a tanning bed today. you can go outside and get some of the vitamin d. >> it's great out there. the heat will return. it's been a hot summer, the heat returns tomorrow. it's actually on it's way here. you can tell when we have a nice day in washington. you can tell be the blue sky. today that sky is very blue. the potomac looks just blue today.

and he didn't tail it. >> reporter: tom sherwood, news4. news4 reported this week that the police chief's office has asked gray's security detail to create more space around him for safety, but not necessarily to keep reporters away from him. a man was beaten after accusing someone of stealing his iphone on capitol hill, but now police say there's no evidence that phone was ever stolen. the victim's name is david mercer. he's a prominent democratic strategist. this shows him in a 7-eleven checking his pockets for his iphone. mercer appears to ask another man about the phone, and then follows him outside. police say the two got into a fight and mercer was taken to a hospital. d.c. police say there is no evidence that a theft ever occurred. they say they are still investigating. a korean war veteran says he has some unfinished business. he would like to expand the current memorial to those who

fought in korea. he has a deadline, one year from today. richard jordan shows us what changes could be on the way. >> we're coming down this afternoon with the ambassador. >> retired colonel william weber calls what he. he lost his right away and leg on the front lines, but the 87-year-old can always stare at his 25 years oldself before he was injured. he inspired a statue at the memorial, but he says the tribute is incomplete. >> it seems to me ridiculous that people would visit this memorial and be totally impressed with the artistry and magnificence, but have to get a brochure when they leave to explain to them what the memorial's message really is. >> reporter: the korean war is often called the forgotten war, but weber says he won't let his comrades suffer the same fate. his two children died recently, expanding the memorial would be his lasting legacy.

chief, what can you tell us about this fire? >> well, doreen, jim, good evening. the fire came out problemly 20, 25 minutes ago. units rid on the scene on the back side of the building, not the rockville pike side, but closer to richard montgomery. there was fire from what appeared to be a parapet-style wall. we do have fire in the ceiling of the second floor of this building. it's gone to a second alarm. we have approximately 85 personnel on the scene. we're attacking the fire, both from the interior and portions of the exterior at times. the building has been evacuated. we do not have any civilian or firefighter injuries. we're not seeing the fire until control. we still have significant fire, and until we -- that second floor ceiling clear, we're working both inside. >> mr. graham, what about traffic?
