the weekend is upon us, could storms be as well? i'm working on your forecast right now. also, d.c. welcoming the olympics with parties all over town. we'll go back to london as dan talks to athletes about the opening ceremony. good evening. >> i'm doreen gentzler. he called himself the joker. he threatened to shoot up his former coworkers, and police say he had an arsenal of weapons to back it up. tonight, a maryland man remains under psychiatric walk after an alleged plot is foiled. jamaree stone has the latest live. >> reporter: police say this is a real threat and stopped what could have been a massive shooting. tonight he's undergoing a mental evaluation at a hospital. according to court documents, he was fired. on monday, he called into the office and told an employee "i am a joker. i'm going to load up my guns and blow everybody up." >> if you call anybody and

threaten to do harm, kill people, we're going to believe you, and we did. >> reporter: authorities did check a police database and found prescott owned more than a dozen guns. on thursday, police drove to his apartment here in maryland and say he appeared to be groggy, wearing a t-shirt that said "guns don't kill people, i do." tonight authorities showed off guns they found in his apartment. among the arsenal, an assault rifle, shotguns, multiple handguns, rifles, a night scope, and 40 boxes of ammo. >> we were surprised by the amount and the types of weapons. >> reporter: we found black tape over the peephole at his apartment. he walked out peacefully. allen cavin says he knows him. >> that doesn't sound like him, that's crazy. >> reporter: police say it's clear the suspect called himself the joker and investigators say he shot and killed 12 people, wounded 58 others. at this point, there is no link between the two suspects.

tonight, members of a church located across the parking lot are concerned. >> it kind of hit us close. >> reporter: now, tonight charges are pending against prescott. live in capital heights, maryland, news 4. new evidence shows the accused gunman may have reached out for help before the shooting. court papers show james holmes was being treated by a psychiatrist at the university of colorado in denver. holmes mailed a package found in the university's mail room to his doctor and included a notebook with descriptions of an attack. he's due back in court on monday. weather now. it's been hot and sticky around here. still that way, but there's a threat of thunderstorms over the weekend. doug? >> just like today, most of us remained on the dry side. tomorrow could be similar, but i do think we'll see a couple of storms out there. 95 degrees the high temperature out there on our friday. 97 in richmond, 97 in virginia beach. very warm numbers.

minutes. vincent grey is the latest to take the stand against the chick-fil-a franchise. he sent a message on twitter today. he said the chain serves what he calls hate chicken. he does not support that company. the mayor's comments come on the heels of chick-fil-a's president's message against same-sex marriage. mayors in chicago, boston, and san francisco have also rallied against the franchise expanding in their cities. chick-fil-a issued a statement saying it does not discriminate against anyone based on race, gender, belief, or sexual orientation. amid the controversy today, the company announced its vice president of public relations has died reportedly of a heart attack. he had been with the company for almost 30 years. a sixth casino is still in the cards for the state of maryland. today, governor martin o'malley called lawmakers back to a

special session to begin on august 9th to allow a new casino. the bill would also allow table games such as poker and blackjack. if lawmakers reach an agreement, it will go on the november ballot, where voters will get the final say. u.s. congressman jesse jackson jr. is checking in to the world famous mayo clinic. the hospital reports he's there for extensive in-patient evaluation for depression. jackson's staff announced in june he was taking a leave of absence to be treated for exhaustion in arizona. his father, reverend jesse jackson, says he is hopeful about his son's recovery. a police officer celebrated for saving lives is now accused of assaulting a teenager at another scene. prince george's police corporal ricky aidy is one of the officers announced as a hero, but yesterday he was indicted by

a grand jury for an incident last august when he responded to the sound of gunshots in capital heights. he's accused of grabbing a 13-year-old who was running away, pulling him off a fence and assaulting him. he has been suspended until the conclusion of his trial. storms are gone, but the cleanup continues. now tonight president obama has approved federal disaster aid in virginia. that will help cover costs. that storm cost state and local governments $27 million. 15 people were killed. more than a million customers across the state lost power. in the meantime, in maryland, governor o'malley today filed a request for federal aid. if approved, it will help six counties, including montgomery county. national weather service now confirmed four tornados last night from the midwest to the northeast and left more than 200,000 people without power. in new york, a tornado with winds up to 110 miles an hour

did considerable damage despite the mess here and across the state, there were no reports of any serious injuries. a man down in kentucky literally felt the force of last night's storms. at the same moment his house was hit by lightning, he happened to reach for his front door handle. he said the force knocked him into a brick wall. his wife called 911 and an ambulance rushed him to the hospital. >> i felt it go through my right hand, up my arm, and out my back side, and i just fell right there on the porch. when it struck the house, the alarm started going off, the smoke detectors started going off. >> a teenager also was hit by lightning last night while he was boating. he is still in a hospital now. coming up on news 4, state troopers escort luxury cars in a high-speed race. why it could cost one officer more than his job. a new role for a bus monitor bullied in this video that went viral. dan hellie joins us live

karen kline is her name. she announced her retirement today. last month, this video of boys taunting her went viral. people around the world sent in money to help give her a vacation. it added up to about $700,000. kline says her decision to leave her job has nothing to do with those bullies. >> two new jersey state troopers accused of turning the garden state parkway into a virtual speedway are facing charges. the men drove more than 100 miles an hour while escorting sports cars in march. the troopers reportedly covered their license plates with black tape to avoid detection. one of the officers involved is a 25-year veteran. he resigned amid the scandal and could lose his $3 million pension as a result. >> london, abuzz as the 2012 olympics are officially now underway. it is the third time that city has hosted the event. >> after years of planning, it's all come to this. thousands on hand for the

spectacular opening ceremony. millions more watching around the world. our own dan hellie is there and he has the latest for us live. hey, dan. >> reporter: hey, doreen, hey, vince, danny boyle's show really was spectacular and well received by the locals. one writer said it was utterly british, brilliant and bonkers all at the same time. obviously, it had everything, james bond, the queen, the sex pistols, sheep, muhammad ali, music, also a huge part, four decades worth of british music throughout this show. what a spectacular extravaganza. one of the best moments, olympic rings joined to form the olympic rings and was raised above the stadium, showing sparks over the stage. danny boyle showed his directing chops with a short movie that involved james bond and the queen. it was a little weird because it

went from daylight to nighttime, but we can't be too picky, then sir paul mccartney singing "hey jude." a couple performers, some still very energized. >> this is my first olympic games, and i was just so thrilled. it was just like an amazing experience. you just had this chill kind of running through your bones that we're actually here, you know in there was a moment shannon and i were standing in the middle, fireworks were going off, started screaming like little schoolgirls. it was awesome. >> when team usa was chanting together walking in and you walk into this huge stadium and the crowd and the music, that and probably the end when we were all listening to "hey jude," there was a big group of americans singing it together and it was just the perfect opening and closing. >> how many people watching, don't tell me, don't tell me.

i'm thinking about kor ychoreog. >> i made a mistake of looking into the audience and seeing these faces, oh, my god, those people are watching. >> reporter: i don't know what he was worried about. only 1 billion people estimated to be watching this opening ceremony worldwide. there were 10,000 volunteers and performers taking part tonight. it was especially moving for one local lady. fobe kuto, the flag bearer for her native liberia, she had a fantastic time this evening. she's liberia's record holder in the 100-meter dash. her and her family left war-torn liberia in 1999 and immigrated to the states after surviving four civil wars. they settled in silver spring. she went on to become one of the greatest athletes in kennedy

high school history before heading to st. johns university. tonight, no doubt, the biggest moment of her life. >> i just can't put into words how i feel, but i feel very blessed and honored and it's an experience that i will always cherish and, you know, just amazing. i'm looking forward to it. going to be a lot of smiles, probably crying, i'm not sure, but i hope it's not heavy enough so i can wave it around. >> reporter: the pride of head kennedy high school in silver spring, maryland. guys, i guess everybody's talking about james bond and the queen jumping out of the airplane, sir paul mccartney, of course, but there were so many really fun parts. i actually liked when mr. bean pulled out his iphone and took a picture. >> i like mr. bean a lot. i'm with you, but the queen and illusion of her jumping out of the helicopter, that was pretty cool. all right, what do you plan for today? we can see it's already daylight behind you.

on sunday, beautiful weather. sunday's looking great with plenty of sunshine. i think sunday's going to be a very nice day. still warm with a high near tom clouds. actually this morning. warm and muggy with a nice start. temperatures about 70 to 76 degrees. your forecast for -- i shouldn't even say to today, sun and clouds, hot and humid, scattered storms in the afternoon. temperatures 89 to about 94 degrees. if you're thinking about heading down towards the beaches, not bad at all out there. temperatures into the 80s, nice and warm sunday and monday. slight chance of showers tomorrow and here's the next couple of days with my monday, tuesday, wednesday and thursday. a little bit higher than they should be, but temperature-wise,
