jim rosenfield. it's been 12 years since phelps swam in an olympic event and did not medal. lochte's win is anything but an upset. he's been the best in the world in this event and his golden reign could very well continue. tracie potts has more on the precedence this sets for the rest of the games. >> reporter: hi, jim. it was a big day for the u.s. especially in swimming. the united states won a gold medal, but not necessarily from the athlete who expected it. >> who's going to win olympic gold in the 400? >> reporter: in the so-called pool duel, ryan lochte won america's first gold winning the men's 400 meter individual medley by a full three seconds. >> i'm so happy. i have my family right there cheering for me. it's a dream come true. >> reporter: a big surprise, michael phelps barely qualified then ended up fourth. his worst finish in this race since he was a teenager. >> i have a lot of races, so i think the biggest thing now is putting this behind me and moving to the next one. >> reporter: phelps has six more

chances to win two medals and become the world's most decorated olympian. in the women's 400 meter elizabeth beisel came in second representing america's tiniest state. >> i'm happy with the silver. it means a lot to me i can represent new england and rhode island. >> reporter: the u.s. earned bronze medals in swimming, a team medal in the women's freestyle relay and peter placed third in the men's 400 meter freestyle. the u.s. men's archery team took silver and the u.s. women's beach volleyball team going for their third gold beat australia. they're pretty excited to be in london. >> thank you, queen. for allowing us to play. >> reporter: the u.s. women's soccer team advanced and the men's gymnastics team qualified. they're on top for now. so here's where we stand now in the medal count. five medals for the united states. overall, tied with italy, and just one behind china. from london, tracie potts, news 4. >> here's some of what you can look forward to on nbc primetime

in the next 15 to 20 minutes. we'll talk more about that storm and chances for storms on the rest of your sunday in the afternoon part of it. jim, that's coming up. >> all right. see you soon. now to the search for a dangerous man. police think he murdered a jeweler inside his store and they're looking into whether he has struck before. news 4's darcy spencer joining us live from arlington with more on a possible crime section. >> reporter: yeah, jim, news 4 has learned police are looking into the possibility that this crime is connected to another robbery. it happened in the district last month, and there were some very similar circumstances. tonight, flowers and candles are placed outside an arlington jewelry store where a man who works here was robbed and killed friday afternoon. police are looking for this man, dressed in a neon traffic vest, in connection with the killing. they say the vest may have helped him blend in. >> there's an awful lot of construction going on in the arlington community. we're doing a lot of roadwork so it is not unusual to see workers

for safety, most all of them are wearing this type of a vest. >> reporter: the photos of the suspect were taken from surveillance video at capital jewelers on columbia pike, where police believe the victim was killed around 4:00 in the afternoon. his body discovered after relatives called police. he had not returned home from work or answered the phone. the fire department had to break down the door to get in. >> it's unfortunate. hopefully we won't see many more of these incidents occur. >> reporter: police are only describing the victim as a 52-year-old man from herndon. while reviewing surveillance video from the store, police saw the crime being committed. they're not saying exactly how the victim was killed or what weapon was used. police say they could see the attacker taking jewelry on the video. they're conducting an inventory of the store to see what exactly was stolen. >> i'm in shock that this happened. i just found out. and i was back here early this morning and i saw the police here and force and i've never

seen that here before. i'm just disturbed and whoever did this, i hope they're caught and whoever did do it, i hope they go turn themselves in. be the best thing to do. >> reporter: back out live, arlington county police are maintaining a 24 hour a day presence here outside that jewelry store. it's still unsecured at this point. there's still jewelry items inside. now, in reference to those surveillance video photographs, police really need the public's help in this case. if you recognize the person or perhaps recognize the lettering on the back of that vest or have information that could help with the investigation, you are asked to call arlington county police. reporting live from arlington, darcy spencer, news 4. the maryland man accused of threatening to shoot up his workplace could spend the next week undergoing a psychiatric evaluation. right now neil prescott is held at a medical center. police say he threatened to ram pain at the pitney bose office in capital heights. on thursday police arrived at

prescott's apartment in crofton and found an arsenal of weapons. police are waiting before the mental evaluation before deciding on charges. a prince georges county police officer is recovers after being shot outside a nightclub. officer rachel jacob was shot in the leg last night outside the galaxy nightclub in langley park. investigators say three people were kicked out of the club and started shooting out of a car as they drove away. police arrested three people including this man, 32-year-old kelly gillis of beltsville. officers say he was the driver. gillis faces several charges including attempted murder. the former president of penn state university has reportedly found a new job. several media tlets are reporting graham spanier seen here with jerry sandusky has taken a part-time national security consulting job with the federal government. spanier served as president of penn state from 1995 until news of the sandusky child sex abuse

scandal broke. he was fired in -- that's joe paterno, of course, in that photograph. we apologize for that. that is not jerry sandusky. spanier was fired in november. is now accused of helping the university cover up the scandal. coming up, a hepatitis outbreak that could involve thousands of people all stems from one man and he worked at four different hospitals in maryland. plus a kidnapping victim bound and gagged inside a police officer's garage. why that officer is not in jail tonight. ♪ and why the national mall turned into a capital dance party. ♪

police are still looking for the gunman who shot two women in the middle of busy u. street early this morning. the shots rang out at the intersection of 12th and u. streets in northwest. police say one woman was hit in the neck. the other in the face. officers do not believe the women were the intended targets and both are expected to recover. a new york police detective is being questioned after a man was found bound and gagged in the detective's garage. the man was kidnapped and held for $75,000 ransom friday northern. police eventually found the victim by tracking his cell phone. the detective says he wasn't involved but has been suspended without pay. his cousin and three other men have been charged with kidn kidnapping. a class action lawsuit has been filed involving a hospital worker who may have exposed thousands of people to hepatitis c. the lawsuit is against a company called triage staffing which placed the man at hospitals across the country who worked in several other states including four maryland hospitals.

he's accused of stealing drugs and syringes and tainting them with hepatitis c. 30 people already diagnosed. thousands more are urged to get tested. >> patients are, my clients, they're worried about, can they touch their grandchild, can they touch their wives? >> he denies stealing or using drugs. he's worked at johns hopkins, maryland general, baltimore veterans, and southern maryland hospitals. if convicted on all charges he could spend up to 24 years in prison. coming up next, how a historic building was turned into a pile of rubble. plus, chuck will tell us if we're finished with the storms. and he's also watching the skies across the pond for the london olympi

for some new construction projects. the crews used 160 pounds of explosives to carry out the implosion of the 39-year-old tower. the building once provided assisted living housing. tonight, d.c.'s mayor is slamming chick-fil-a because of its stance on gay marriage. vincent gray says he would not welcome the restaurant if it wanted to expand into the district. this comes after chick-fil-a's president said marriage should only be between a man and woman. in a tweet mayor gray called it, quote, hate chicken. he says chick-fil-a goes against d.c. law. >> when people who don't support marriage equality, it is a law here in the district of columbia. people who don't support human rights for everybody, there just is no place for them in this city. >> mayors in chicago, san francisco and boston also say chick-fil-a is not welcome in their cities. republicans including sarah palin and former minnesota governor tim pawlenty are speaking up in support of chick-fil-a.

♪ thousands spent the day dancing on the national mall. part of a celebration of national dance day. d.c.'s celebration featured celebrity guests from the show "so you think you can dance," also performances from local dance groups. everybody having a good time out there. showers held off. sun was out. for a while. >> yeah, it was a hot one, though. another sizzler outside today. 97 degrees. >> was it really? >> oh, another miserably hot day. >> i kind of tried to ignore that. >> we all wish we could ignore it. for anybody who had to spend time outside today, it was a sizzler which of course led to thunderstorms which sometimes leads to this. a rainbow in our skies over arlington. can you make it out? right there on the left. it's on the roof of the black car on the left side of your screen. they were under the end of the rainbow. no word on whether the pot of gold was found in the trunk of that black car.

nice day outside. cooled off by showers late in the day. not everybody got in on the rain, but those who did, i suspect, appreciated it. though it came down in buckets across portions of prince georges county, out toward annapolis. right now it's 75 here in washington. winds are light out of the southwest averaging only 3 miles per hour. temperatures around the rest of the area, mostly now low to mid 70s. not going to drop too much further than this. maybe another couple of degrees. that's it between now and startoff temperatures tomorrow morning. and we're not 100% done with the rain yet. one lonesome thundershower up here just to the north of the city of washington. it's running right along the montgomery county and howard county line. it's aiming down here toward columbia and jessup. it will be on top of route 1 and route 29 here very, very quickly. still plenty of thunder and lightning now in and around, just about on top of the city of damascus. that storm is running down to the southeast. could make it to annapolis and shady side where you've already had a couple heavy rains. the rain is coming to an end after a gully washer of an evening along the beaches.

had a twitter follower report from bethany beach sideways rain, thunder and lightning there about 9:30. what about the olympics forecast for tomorrow? there's a live picture of the city of london where the sun is just now coming up. 58 with a nice day to get started. clouds will build in during the day and rain showers likely before this day is done in london. little trough of low pressure will set us up for a muggy overnight. generally dry. literally one or two isolated showers can't be ruled out. tomorrow during the day, plenty of sunshine. more than today. and fewer rain chances tomorrow than we had today. but there's still not zero. i can't give you the all dry for tomorrow. as we go on into monday, just a touch cooler. highs generally staying in the upper 80s to near 90 as posed to the mid and upper 90s where we were today. going to the beaches tomorrow, not a bad day. 86 at the beaches tomorrow which is now today. 84 monday. 81 degrees coming up on tuesday. the overnight hours tonight, passing clouds and mild. bit humid. overnight lows in the 70s. then for tomorrow, today, actually, sunday's forecast,

defense can improve on what he saw last season. >> i think there's a lot of growth. i think statistically they were maybe 31st two years ago, then middle of the pack pretty much last year. you know, i think the whole team coming together, special teams, to excel. the better we get on offense, the more we're able to control the ball and stay on the field and do those types of thing, we'll all feed off each other. i think, if nothing else, our personnel this year has just grown together. >> could it be that the world of men's swimming is undergoing a passing of the baton? michael phelps, the man who took home eight golds in beijing four years ago looked like he was ready to retire after competing in his first of seven events and it appeared fellow american ryan lochte has taken the first step toward overtaking the once unbeatable phelps. so phelps won gold in this event in 2008. lochte toohome the bronze. this is the 400 im. tonight, a different story.
