qualified, then ended up fourth. his worst finish in this race since he was a teenager. >> i have a lot of races. so i think the biggest now is putting this behind me and moving on to the next one. >> phelps has six more chances to win two medals and become the world's most decorated olympian. elizabeth beisel came in second, representing the tiniest state. >> i'm happy with the silver. it means a lot to me that i can represent new england and rhode island especially here. >> the u.s. earned bronze medals in swimming, and peter vanderkaay placed third in the freestyle. the u.s. men's archery team took silver and the u.s. women's beach volleyball team going for their third gold beat australia. they're pretty excited to be in london. >> thank you, queen. for allowing us to play. >> the u.s. soccer team advanced and the gymnastics team qualified. they're on top for now.

tracie potts, nbc news, london. we'll have much more olympic coverage coming up on news4 today later this hour. we'll meet some local athletes who are looking to row their way from the potomac to olympic gold in london. you can follow our live blog any time in the london 2012 section. u.s. park police released a sketch of a man they believe sexually assaulted a woman last week. the woman was jogging wednesday night. investigators say the man put her in a choke hold and she blacked out. she woke up with her pants pulled down and the man fondling her. call the u.s. park police if you have any information. the search is on for the person who murdered a jeweler inside his own store. the owner of capital jewelers was found dead on columbia pike in arlington yesterday. as darcy spencer reports, police

are still trying to figure out if this killer has struck before. >> reporter: flowers and candles are placed outside an arlington jewelry store where a man was robbed and killed friday afternoon. police are looking for this man, dressed in a neon traffic vest in connection with the killing. they say the vest may have helped him blend in. >> there's an awful lot of construction going on in the arlington community. we are doing a lot of road work so it's not unusual to see workers and for safety most all of them are wearing this type of a vest. >> reporter: the photos of the suspect were taken from surveillance video at capital jewelers on columbia pike. that's where police believe the victim was killed around 4:00 in the afternoon. his body discovered after relatives called police. he had not called home from work. the fire department had to break down the door to get in. >> it's infortunate. >> reporter: police are only describing the victim as a 52-year-old man from herndon while reviewing surveillance

video from the store. they're not saying exactly how the victim was killed or what weapon was used. police say they could see the attacker taking jewelry on the video. they're conducting an inventory of the store to see what was stolen. >> i'm in shock that this happened. just found out and i was back here early this morning and i saw the police here and i have never seen that here before. i'm just disturbed and whoever did this, i hope they're caught. whoever did do it, they hope they turn themselves in. >> reporter: arlington county police are maintaining a 24 hour a day presence here outside of this store. the store still not been secured. there are jewelry items inside. now, police need the public's help in this investigation. if you recognize the person in the photo or perhaps the lettering on the back of that vest, you are asked to call arlington county police. in arlington county, darcy

spencer, news4 today. a prince georges county police officer is recovering this morning after she was shot outside a popular nightclub. officer rachel jacob was working security at the galaxy nightclub in langley park. this was early saturday morning. investigators say three people were kicked out of the club. as they were driving away they started shooting towards the club. officer jacob was shot in the leg. police arrested three people including 32-year-old kelly gillis of beltsville. he faces several charges includes attempted murder. d.c. police are on the hunt for whoever shot two women yesterday morning. it happened at the intersection of 12th and u streets northwest. one woman was shot in the neck, the other in the face. they're both expected to be okay. investigators don't think the women were intended targets. this is the second time two women were shot in the u street area in the past two weeks. major questions for a new york police detective after a man was found bound and gagged in the officer's garage.

the victim was taken friday morning and held for $75,000 ransom. police found him by tracking his cell phone. the detective says he wasn't involved, but he has been suspended without pay. his cousin and three other men have been charged with kidnapping. a hospital staffing company is facing a class action lawsuit over a maryland worker who may have exposed thousands to hepatitis c. they placed him in the hospitals around the county and he is accused of stealing drugs and syringes and tainting them with hepatitis c. 30 people are diagnosed and thousands more are urged to get tested. >> patients are -- my clients, they're worried about, you know, can they touch their grandchi grandchilds? >> he worked at johns hopkins, maryland general, baltimore veterans and southern maryland hospitals. if convicted under all charges

today search teams will try to reach the body of a virginia man who died climbing a peruvian mountain. 32-year-old ben horne and gil wise of new york fell off a ridge while coming down a 20,000 foot mountain. the bodies were found yesterday about 280 miles north of lima.

they believe the men fell nearly a thousand feet to their deaths. a 97-year-old woman is safe and sound after she went missing for three days. search crews found edna clay in a dried up creek in southern ohio. she was flown to a hospital. officials say she had some broken bones but is otherwise okay. clay went missing on wednesday after her family says she walked away from home. so far no sign of a crime here. outrage in mississippi, as a couple says a church rejected their wedding plans because they are black. charles and teeian dra wilson were set to get married at the predominantly white church, but some people complained and threatened to kick out the pastor if he married the couple. they have never married a black couple. >> had never been done here before. so it was setting a new pre precedence. and there were those who reacted because of that. i didn't want have to have a

areas of maryland, virginia, into west virginia are down into the 60s this morning. a pleasant start under a clear sky now. all those storms we had last evening are long gone. things are settled. off to a beautiful start this morning. throughout the day, a few clouds building during the afternoon. these areas in green, these are some zones that might get some isolated thunderstorms. mainly around the bay and the eastern shore. that would be later this afternoon and into this evening. as we get into monday, greater chance of maybe some scattered storms around. mainly on tuesday is our best chance for more rain moving in. tuesday afternoon and evening. as well as on wednesday. so far, this afternoon, partly cloudy. a slight chance of a thunderstorm after a sunny morning and we'll have highs reaching the upper 80s. back down to the low 80's. then this evening, partly cloudy. any storms will be ending quickly. temperatures down to the upper 70s by mid night. then by dawn tomorrow, it will be down near 70.

on monday. to the hardwood. the u.s. men's basketball team will kick off their olympics today as they take on france. this year's team has been repeatedly compared to the famed dream team 20 years ago. today they hope to let their game do all the talking. the french will be looking to spoil the u.s. led by their star point guard tony parker. you might know him as the star player of the san antonio spurs. now, here locally the washington nationals crossed the century mark. 100 games in they're 20 games above .500. a big reason is their ability to win on the road and last night in milwaukee was not the exception. the nats and brewers going old school, honoring the homestead grays in the negro league last night. the nats pitcher went six innings and striking out six. ryan zimmerman helped out at the plate crushing a solo home run in the fifth inning here.

israel if they decided to take military action against iran if it meant keeping iran from securing nuclear weapons. a strong statement comes as the republican plans a speech in jerusalem this morning. he will also meet with prime minister benjamin netanyahu today who is a long-time friend. and he plans to meet with the palestinian prime minister as well. if elected, romney has promised stronger ties to israel. the man suspected of the colorado theater massacre is scheduled to be in court tomorrow to face charges in the attacks. there are also new questions regarding the psychiatrist who was treating james holmes before the mass shooting. dr. lynn fencen was disciplined by the colorado medical board in 2005. she reportedly wrote prescriptions for herself, her husband and another employee. before the shooting, a package was mailed to him and the judge will decide if it can be used as evidence in the trial. more heart breaking news from the shooting massacre. the mother of the youngest victim has suffered a miscarriage. ashley moser is in critical

condition. she was shot in the neck and stomach. her family says she's recovering from surgery, but the trauma caused her to miscarry. moser's 6-year-old daughter veronica was killed in last week's attack. today, flags in aurora will be returned to full mast. there's a bit of heart warming news in this tragedy. cinemark, the company that owns the movie theater, has offered to pay for all of the victims' funerals. this comes days after the hospitals treating some of the victims announced they won't charge them or cut down on the medical bills. three more victims were laid to rest yesterday in texas, ohio and illinois. a local theater is also helping out those affected by the shooting. in hagerstown, maryland, the theater is donating a dollar from every ticket sold yesterday and today. the money will go to the colorado-based community first foundation. the maryland man accused of planning a workplace shooting

will likely spend next week undergoing a psychiatric evaluation. neil prescott is being held at ann arundal medical center. they found an arsenal of two dozen weapons at his apartment. police are waiting on the mental evaluation before they charge. supporters of same-sex will hold demonstrations this week at chick-fil-a restaurants around the country. on friday, same-sex couples will hold a kiss-in at the restaurant chain. d.c. mayor vincent gray waded into the controversy while at an event yesterday. he slammed the fast food restaurant for what he calls hate chicken. mayor gray says he has always supported ljbt rights for people living in the district. >> when people who don't support marriage equality, it's the law here, people who don't support human rights for everybody, there's no place for them in

this city. >> in 2010, gray helped pass legislation in the district legalizing same-sex marriage. other mayors have also criticized chick-fil-a. and there will be more police presence today, but they won't be sitting in their cars. they'll be running the beat in the kentland neighborhood. that means they'll be literally running a two-mile route in an effort to be more visible and engage the community. it's part of transforming the neighborhoods initiative which is locused on lowering crimes in six communities. if you see them, say hi. >> but maybe it quick because they're on the run. >> they're on the go. next, why it may be easier to park and pay at metro stations tomorrow morning. we have a lot of rowers representing our region at the olympics. meet two athletes going for gold in london who did all their training right here on the potomac.

expect some delays on metro today. there is track work on four of the system's five lines. first on the red line. the medical center in bethesda stations will be closed. that means you have to catch a bus between grovener and friendship heights. the buss will run between eisenhower avenue, but you'll be able to ride blue lines. and when you go to park at a

metro station tomorrow morning, you might be able to pay by phone. metro is testing a pay by phone system at the rockville and ft. tauten stations. customers can pay for one of the 122 spaces at the rockville station for a dollar an hour or $5 for the day. 32 kiss and ride spaces at ft. tauten are also available. parkmobile does charge a 32 cent fee for each transaction. nbc4 is looking to help out those who help others. with help from the nbc universal foundation, nbc4 has launched a grant challenge called 21st century solutions. we will give away a total of $100,000 to three deserving nonprofit organizations. any nonprofit that's about three years old or less in our viewing area is eligible. tell us how that organization is using new and innovative ways to address challenges in our community.

people were shaking their groove things all over the mall as part of the national dance day yesterday. this is the third year of this great event which helps promote dancing. not only as an art, but a fun way to work out. d.c. congressional delegate eleanor holmes norton and the cheerleaders busted a move at the event. for some people who say all music sounds the same, there's a new study that says they're right. researchers broke down pop songs from 1955 to 2010 with advanced algorit algorithms. music has become louder and more bland using fewer unique chords and melodies. old songs could become popular again if they crank up the volume and simplify the chords involved. there you go. dancing music, a little bit of everything in there. >> they're having a good time out there. i think you got distracted with

all the cheerleaders. >> i'm not saying anything about that. i was very focused on what i was supposed to be doing. tom, what's the weather looking like? >> off to a beautiful start, but in london the sky is starting to fill with clouds there. we have a live view of the olympic stadium there. there's a live view showing us some clouds that are building. let's look at the olympics stadium shot is showing that where we have the clouds building over the olympic stadium. and right now, it's in the low 60s and later today in the upper 60s. could get some afternoon showers there and unfortunately they may linger into early evening. some of the outdoor events in london could be affected. there's the sky over washington right now. 74 at reagan national. sunrise a little after 6:00 and as we look at temperatures around the region, we are in the 60s to near 70 degrees all around washington and the nearby

suburbs in arlington, fairfax, montgomery counties, low to mid 60s. humidity levels have dropped even around the bay and on the eastern shore, not much humidity around in the wake of the storms last night. we had quite a few of those. heavy downpours at the beaches, but now they're long gone. we have a weak area of high pressure. that has moved in and will be in place today giving us plenty of sunshine. here is your day planner. sunrise is at 6:07. by noontime we'll be in the mid 80s. lots of sun this afternoon. we ought to hit the upper 80s, briefly 90 degrees, then the winds will shift a bit. clouds building by late afternoon. by then, we might have a few isolated thunder showers, mainly around the chesapeake bay. but probably not anywhere farther west of there. overall a gorgeous day. enjoy. then as we get into the evening hours we'll be down to the upper 70s by midnight.

we'll have a partly cloudy night. then tomorrow, getting more humid, afternoon highs around 90. we have a small chance of some scattered afternoon storms tomorrow. then as we get into tuesday, a lot of clouds around. maybe a little sun in the morning. low 70s. then upper 80s during the afternoon on tuesday. scattered showers and thunderstorms tuesday afternoon and evening. then as we bet into wednesday, partly sunny. low 90s. probably the hottest day of the week and some scattered afternoon storms. after that, things settle down. here's your seven-day outlook. on thursday, up near 90 degrees and partly cloudy. a little less humid. not quite as steamy as midweek. then on friday, looking partly cloudy. only a slight chance of a thunderstorm with highs around 90. then again on saturday, we'll be up near 90 degrees during the afternoon and again just a small chance of an isolated thundershower coming in perhaps on saturday afternoon.

working to win. >> ready? >> the face of our sport is the 6:00 a.m. early rows. when it's freezing out and no one else wants to be awake or doing a workout. >> for u.s. national rowing team members margot shumway and sarah trowbridge, the olympic medals are won under the cloak of darkness when no one is watching. >> drop it, there you go. >> you don't have to know a thing about rowing or like it to learn a valuable lesson about what it means to be the guest and the sacrifice it takes to see you through. >> part of that is not just the more amount of hours you're doing. it's also the work you're doing outside of the boat house in terms of taking care of yourself and preparing for each practice. >> but it does start here. each and every morning. >> warm-up is going to be as we did yesterday. >> the pair both had a taste of success at the college level. but despite the pressure of being a student athlete, the

intense training regimen required to compete at a world-class level is a whole different game. >> when you take the next step to try and be an elite level rower, everything in your life is centered around practice and competition and you're not a kid anymore. it doesn't mean it's not just as fun at some points, but it is, you know, a very serious undertaking. >> it makes the potomac boat club a second home for these two and other rowers like them. chasing dreams isn't a 9 to 5 job, but a lifestyle. >> these athletes will work out two or three times a day. they need something to help pay the bills so there's job availability. for the coach, you have coaching here. the boat club is a big resource. >> there's very few people that you can pursue and you want to be the best in the world. there's no way to tell you're

the best at what you do. i want to be the best in my country and in the world is very rewarding. and it's -- you can't buy a gold medal at the olympics. >> so they will get into the water on monday and get things started. but the interesting thing about them, it's not the 6:00 a.m. workouts that's crazy. but making decisions off the water. you know, you can't go out with friends for fear they might set them back. i mean, it's a lifestyle for them. sacrifice is just unbelievable. >> all the athletes, i mean, they have to be so focused that it takes over their lives in some cases. but that's what it takes to get to this level. >> for one shot. >> and they do it at all hours in the day. because i know you followed other athletes that do the same sport. we have had the daytime cam and that was pretty cool. you were out at night. >> like they said, that was early in the morning. they get three workouts in. they're working at the facility to make extra money. while they're, you know, in

it is sunday, july 29, 2012. as you can tell from the live picture in london, a lot of clouds moving in. quite the contrast in the washington, d.c. area. >> after all that is what london is known for. we have tom kierein in for chuck bell today. he has more on the forecast and how things are looking in london. hey, tom. >> good morning. our clouds are moving out in the wake of the storms and now we've got a clear sky over the potomac. there's a live view from the hd city camera on this sunday morning, starting off with low humidity. there's capitol hill in the distance. 72 now at reagan national. down to the low 60s, a nice change overnight. and that in the wake of the storms, they unloaded torrential rain on the eastern shore. a lot of thunder and lightning. even had a few of those coming through last evening in the metro area. we have a nice area of high pressure moving in. and as we get into the afternoon hours we're warming up.

but right now, off to a cool start. many locations in the 60s. that includes all of virginia and much of the eastern shore. except for right around the tidal potomac and around the bay. out of the mountains even dipped down to the upper 50s in western maryland and in west virginia. so for the day today, by 9:00, bright and sunny. low humidity. a fresh northwesterly breeze. then by noontime -- excuse me -- into the mid 80s and then by mid afternoon up near 90s. enjoy. a look at the workweek ahead is coming up in a couple of minutes. >> tom, thanks. day 2 underway and team usa is looking to build on an impressive start to the olympic games. >> here's a look at the medal count so far. china leads the way with six medals. four of which are gold. but the u.s. and italy are not far behind. tied with five medals each. although the americans only have one gold right now.

week. the woman was jogging on the capital crescent trail wednesday night. investigators say the man put her in a choke hold and she blacked out. she woke up with her pants pulled down and the man fondling her. if you have any information about this incident, call u.s. park police. the search is on this morning for the person who murdered a jeweler inside his own store. take a close look at this picture. police believe this may be the killer. and as news4's darcy spencer reports, they think he may have struck before. >> reporter: flowers and candles are placed outside an arlington jewelry store where a man who works here was robbed and killed friday afternoon. police are looking for this man, dressed in a neon traffic vest in connection with the killing. they say the vest may have helped him blend in. >> there's construction going on in the arlington community. we're doing a lot of road work so it's not unusual to see

workers and for safety most all of them are wearing this type of a vest. >> reporter: the photos were taken from surveillance video at capital jewelers on columbia pike. that's where police believe the victim was killed around 4:00 in the afternoon. his body discovered after relatives called police. he had not returned home from work or answered the phone. the fire department had to break down the door to get in. >> it's unfortunate and hopefully we won't see many more of these incidents occur. >> reporter: police are only describing the victim as a 52-year-old man from herndon. while reviewing surveillance vie from the store, they saw the crime being committed. they're not saying how the victim was killed or what weapon was used. they could see the attacker taking jewelry on the video. they're conducting an inventory to see what was stolen. >> i'm in shock this happened. i just found out and i was back here early this morning and i saw the police here and i have

never seen that here before. i'm just disturbed and whoever did this, i hope they're caught. whoever they did do it, i hope they turn themselves in. >> reporter: arlington county police are maintaining a 24 hour a day presence here outside the store. the store has not been secured. there are jewelry items inside. now, police need the public's help. if you recognize the person in the photo or the lettering on the back of that vest, you are asked to call arlington county police. in arlington county, darcy spencer, news4 today. a prince georges county police officer is recovering this morning after she was shot outside a popular nightclub. officer rachel jacob was working security early saturday morning. investigators say three people were kicked out of the club. as they were driving away they started shooting toward the club and officer jacob was shot in the leg. police arrested three people including kelly gillis.

he faces charges including attempted murder. another shoot put two women in the hospital. this one happened at the intersection of 12th and u streets northwest yesterday morning. one woman was shot in the neck. the other in the face. they are both expected to be okay. investigators don't think the women were the intended targets. but this is the second time two women were shot in the u street area in just the past two weeks. it could be slow going for some drivers in virginia today. the wilson bridge project is causing headaches on the beltway. telegraph road is completely closed between the beltway and duke street until monday morning. the ramp to the eisenhower connector will be closed until noon today. there will only be the two through lanes open. they're working on the bridge over the railroad tracks and expect lengthy delays all this weekend. the time is 6:07. modern day claims of discrimination. hear from a couple who says they couldn't have a wedding at a

a thousand feet to their deaths. prince georges county police need your help in finding a missing elderly man. 81-year-old lester hearst was last seen yesterday afternoon near his home in the 3,000 block of craigs lawn road in beltsville. he is driving a 2005 gray toyota corolla with maryland tags. 5 eb 57. he had suffered two strokes before which is hindering his reasoning and motor skills. if you have any information, call prince georges county police. a 97-year-old woman from ohio is safe and sound after she went missing for three days. search crews found edna clay in southern ohio. she was flown to a hospital and officials there say she had broken bones but is otherwise okay. clay went missing on wednesday after she walked away from home. a mississippi couple says a church rejected their wedding plans because of the color of their skin.

they were set to get married at the predominantly white first baptist church of crystal springs, but some members threatened to kick the pastor out if he married them inside the church. the church has been open since 1883 and has never married a black couple. >> this had never been done here before, so it was setting a new precedence. there were those who reacted to that because of that. i didn't want to have a controversy within the church and i certainly didn't want a controversy to affect the wedding. i wanted to make sure that their wedding day was a special day. >> the wilsons are now talking to their lawyer to figure out their next move. church officials are planning internal meetings on what to do should this situation happen again. today, your four legged or feathered friend can sit in the pews with you.

ahead of the pack. phelps in lane 8 at the bottom of your screen, he's not doing so well. to the final lap, lochte's cruising in. he takes home the gold. meanwhile, phelps doesn't even medal with the fourth place finish. from there we are heading over to the beach and check out the volleyball duel of misty may trainer and kerri walsh. they have been dominant on the sand over the last eight years. they continued to do their thing yesterday in london. this time against australia. after winning the first set, the duo fell behind 13-9 during the second. but they rallied back to pull off the 21-19 victory here. misty may trainer with the kill. they'll face the czech republic on monday. to the hardwood, the u.s. men's basketball team will kick off their olympic competition against france today. this year's team has been compared time and time again to the famed dream team 20 years ago. who really knows how they match

up? today, however, thane hope to let their game do the talking. the french will be looking to spoil the u.s. led by star point guard tony parker. he's the point guard of the san antonio spurs. locally the nationals have 62 games left in the regular season and they're certainly red hot. currently 20 games above .500. part of that is their impressive road record which they put on the line against milwaukee last night. the nats and brewers turned back the clock honoring the homestead grays and there was a great homecoming going six innings and striking out six. ryan zimmerman helped him out at the plate crushing a se low home run here in the fifth inning. the nats win 4-1. and the teams will play this afternoon. the orioles in action. a rough outing for orioles pitcher tommy hunter. right-hander gave up two home

a comfortable three seconds to spare. >> this is only the start of the olympics so i have to keep going. >> reporter: he competes in the 200 meter freestyle. he beat michael phelps who look issing to set a record for winning more medals than any other olympian than ever. but phelps came in fourth. >> it is frustrating. just going to try to move on. >> reporter: the world's number one skeet shooter kim roadie competes today. >> i'm at four olympic medals, two gold, a silver and a bronze. >> reporter: one more she becomes the first american to medal in five consecutive games. look for superstars on the court, lebron james, kevin durant as the men's basketball team plays france. venus williams will compete and today she'll face the romanians with her sister. the u.s. could see more gold.

dana wohl her is favored in the butterfly. >> this is one of the best re y relays. >> gymnastics gets underway with jordan weaver. there's men's basketball and gymnastic, beach volleyball. but the rain could impact those. i want to show you one thing here. this is in the paper today. remember the queen in opening ceremonies, parachuting into the olympic stadium? this is the guy right here that was the queen. he was sewn into this salmon colored dress. he played james bond. the queen apparently got quite a kick out of it. >> they were saying the queen is the new bond girl, but it turns out there's a new bond guy. >> yeah. i love that the queen had many word robe changes. >> hey, we are hearing that some of the venues are not actually full to capacity, there's some empty seats. is that true? >> yeah.

into next weekend in ten minutes. back to you. >> tom, thank you. a mitt romney adviser says the presidential candidate would back israel if they decided to take action against iran. if it meant keeping iran from securing nuclear weapons. the strong statement comes as the republican plans a speech in jerusalem this morning. the former massachusetts governor will meet with prime minister benjamin netanyahu today who is a long-time friend of his and he plans to meet with the palestinian prime minister. if elected, romney has promised stronger ties to israel. the man suspected of the colorado theater massacre is scheduled to be in court tomorrow to face charges in those attacks. there are also new questions regarding the psychiatrist who was treating james holmes before the attack. dr. lynn fenton was disciplined by the colorado medical board in 2005 for writing herself and family members prescriptions. before the shooting, holmes mailed fenton a package which a

judge will soon decide if it can be used as evidence in the trial. and a woman who is in critical condition and who has already lost a daughter in the shooting suffered a miscarriage. ashley moser was shot in the neck and stomach. her family says she's recovering from surgery but the trauma caused her to miscarry. moser's 6-year-old daughter veronica was killed in last week's attack. she was the youngest victim of the shootings. today, flags in aurora will be raised to full mast. there's a bit of heart warming news. cinemark the company that owns the aurora movie theater has offered to pay for all of the victims' funerals. this comes days after the hospitals treating some of the victims announced they won't either charge them or they will cut down on their medical bills. three more victims were laid to rest yesterday in texas, ohio and illinois. a maryland theater is doing their part to help those affected by the shootings. in hagerstown, they're donating $1 from every ticket sold today and yesterday.

they'll do a dollar for dollar match of the ticket sales. it will go to the community first foundation. and a man accused of planning a workplace shooting will undergo a psychiatric evaluation. neil prescott is currently being held at anne arundel medical center. he threatened a rampage at the pitney bowes office in capital heights. they found two dozen weapons at his apartment. police are waiting until the mental evaluation before deciding on the charges. supporters of same-sex marriage will hold two separate demonstrations at chick-fil-a restaurants around the country. they'll take part in on a peaceful sit-in and then a kiss-in. vincent gray weighed in on the controversy at an event in southeast d.c. yesterday. he slammed the fast food restaurant for what he calls hate chicken. mayor gray says he's always supported ljbt rights for people living in the district.

here's some good news if you drive to the metro station. when you go to park, you may be able the opay by phone. metro is testing a pay by phone testing at the rockville and ft.

hello. i'm meteorologist tom kierein in weather center 4. this morning, around our region off to a beautiful start. in london they have a lot of clouds closing in. there's the olympic stadium. forecast there for today, mostly cloudy. chance of some showerers. temperatures in the mid and upper 60s and then lingering showers there into the evening hours. there's the sky over washington now on this sunday morning. live view from our hd city camera off to a clear start. right now, reagan national is at 72 degrees. we have dew point there at 64. that's comfortably dry. that's going to be the story through the rest of the

afternoon. low humidity in place and quite a bit of sunshine. now, as we take a look at temperatures around the region now, we're generally in the 60s in suburbs and rural areas. and right around 70 degrees now and upper 70s. any breeze off the water, the water temperatures are in the 80s around the bay. at the beaches, water temperatures around the 70s. all those storms we had last night, they are long gone. heading out to sea. being replaced by a nice large area of high pressure. that's going to be over us here throughout the rest of the day and into this evening. just a slight chance of a few isolated thundershowers, around the eastern shore. to our west, probably won't have any rain around for the afternoon. for the morning hours, upper 70s and lower humidity in the air. lots of sunshine. a delightful morning.

club. we all had opportunities at the community pool growing up. but this is a whole different thing, isn't it? >> it sure is. >> what constitutes a great dive? what three things can you point to? >> you start off with height or lift from the surface. how high do they get up into the air. and then the exciting about where they start to somersault and twist, the flight through the air. then the big one is the entry. how do they go through the water. is it straight up and down without a splash or over on their back or short on their stomach. >> one thing that has always amazed me is this platform diving. and we had an opportunity to catch up with some of the divers earlier this week. can you walk us through this? what are they doing here? >> sure, you're looking at colby shin holter on a platform. you're looking at a nice, straight body line. it allows him to balance three

stories above the water and then he'll fall away. you'll notice a lot of times with the diving is this head position. it allows them to know where they are in space, it allows them to have control and to be able to see what's happening. >> you side that that head control kind of dictates what the rest of the body does. >> sure. it's tremendously important in the whole thing. you will see -- >> and we always catch it at this point. you know, for a novice like me who doesn't know a lot about diving i'm looking at the splash. >> right. >> i know if you cannonball you're not going to win, but you can -- from a coaching standpoint, you can see here his leg positioning and kind of what might happen, is that right? >> sure. you're looking at -- that is the moment that everybody looks at and goes, not so good or that was great. you know? that's the easy part for the layman to say straight up and down,

synchronized diving. you try to do it in unison. but this isn't just difficult for the divers, but from a judging standpoint s that right? >> it's incredible the amount of detail that you have to look at as a judge. you're watching the intricate details of a very complicated dive. then you're trying to see how precisely those two dives are performed together. >> it's got to be difficult coaching that. you know, if one is overrotating or not rotating enough, how do you tell one to do one thing and then be on the same page with another? >> we use two things. one, we have a staff of coaches so we have two people watching the dives at the same time. otherwise, we're watching it on replay like this. on the pool deck, we have video equipment so we can look at things over and over again and break it down. >> all right. great, doug beavers, i appreciate it. back to you. diving 101. be sure to check out the synchronized diving later on today. >> all right. i thought i can do some of that,
