a gunman linked to the murder of a jewelry storeowner in arlington may have robbed another store last month. >> with his hair still died, the shooter finds out how many charges he's actually facing. >> why so many empty seats?

we're live from london straight ahead. did evening, everybody. i'm jim handly, and i'm wendy rieger. news4 has learned that investigators have a major lead, and there could be a connection to a robbery in d.c., jackie bensen has the latest. >> it's what the gunman was wearing, the same knee onsafety vest that appeared to have been worn in a jewelry robbery in d.c. just last month. this security cam are video from june 9th shows a man in a safety vest entering a jewelry store minutes before closing time. in a terrifying instant he pulls a gun on the owner. >> when i was robbed, i gave up the jewelry and didn't fight, didn't question the guy, and he went on his way.

>> reporter: this weekend the victim saw this image on tv. it was made from security camera video at capital jewelers, distributed by police after 52-year-old tommy weong was found murdered in history saturday. >> i saw the same exact description, same yellow vest, same hat, and he looked very, very similar to the guy that robbed and shot and killed the other guy. mr. weong's family is devastated, trying to come to grips with an unimaginable loss. >> he's a great man, very loving. all he's ever done is focus on his family and cared for us, and never once has he burdened us with his troubles. just appreciate it if everyone can bring this man to justice. >> arlington detectives interviewed the victim this morning. >> he's a career criminal going

after other people. hopefully we can get him off the street. >> reporter: the arlington victim, mr. tommy weong, had just attended his 25-year-old son's wedding the week before he was murdered. reporting from d.c. police headquarters jackie bensen, news4. take a look at the two men in this surveillance video. police say they robbed a check cashing store, and you is see one of the hold ago an employee at knifepoint. they forced the woman to open two safes and ran off with more than $37,000 in cash. james holmes, the man accused in one of the worst u.s. shootings in history is now charged with 24 counts of murder, two counts for each of the victim. one murder with deliberation, the other is for extreme indifference. holmes made his first very short statement in court answering "yes" for the judge's question about waiving the next hearing.

krupski, an avid fisherman and contractor. he was remodeling this apartment and he was staying here while he did the job. and it was here that he was killed over the weekend. by phone today, i talked to his half-brother scott birr quist. >> he told me it was a rough neighborhood, but he was okay. >> reporter: police were called of reports people were disorderly, chasing each other around with a shovel. they say that turned into a case of murder. they say dave krupski ran from this apartment up the steps, down the sidewalk, two teenagers close behind. at 52 avenue, he crossed this foot bridge, next to that creek. as he got across the bridge, just to the other side, they say those teenagers beat him to

death with that shovel. the motive -- robbery. charged with robbery, charged with murder p. 17-year-old james mur murray, and 16-year-old andre attaway. >> three lives wasted over something stupid. they got $5, is what i heard. >> back at the scene, people are still talking about what happened here. >> it could have been me. i work in these buildings. it could have been me. you never know. people running around robbing people, looking for robberies. it could have been me. >> reporter: both teens have been charged as adults. according to court documents, both teens confessed to the crime. pat collins, news4. d.c. police looking for witnesses after a shooting. two women were shot at the

intersection of 12 and u streets, northwest on saturday morning. both victims are expected to be okay. one is an nbc news white house produc producer. shauna thomas was grazed by a bullet in what happens to be a random shooting. there is an ongoing case, and she is working with the police. we are grateful shauna was treated and released soon after being admitted to the hospital. we ask for respect for her privacy. a shooting that shut down part of chinatown during the morning rush has been ruled accidental. this happened outside the mcdonald's at the vising center. investigators say after getting into a fight, a man shot and wounded himself by accident. he was taken to the hospital and is now under arrest. a few showers out there today. will it rain tonight? doug kammerer has the first word on the forecast. >> we are seeing in vain out there and some thunderstorms. you can look at that picture out

>> this ribbon ceremony signals the opening of a new pathway to cross the anacostia. if you're trying to go downtown directly from southbound 295, forget it. there's absolutely been no way to do that. >> reporter: until now. these vehicles were the very first ones to use a brand-new ramp that will take commuters traveling southbound on 295 directly across the 11th street bridge. >> this is the fulfillment, at least a substantial partial fulfillment of a long-held dream. >> reporter: the new ramp is the latest phase of the $400 million project, and it's the first of two missing links connecting 295 directly to the southeast/southwest freeway. >> we have made improvements here today, first of many that will make that connection

possible. >> to get to 395, motorists traveling on southbound 295 have had to detour through neighborhoods, taking either the howard road or suitland parkway exits, then looping around to cross the south capital street or 11th street bridge. i come around the back side, across the bridge, sit in traffic. >> with this new ramp, motorests can go directly from 295 south onto the 11th street bridge. at this new exit. it should shave about ten minutes off your commute. >> if it cuts out ten minutes of my time, i'm going to try. >> community leaders say it will improve safety. >> you don't have to make any more u-turns, no more illegal turns, no more going the wrong way going to downtown washington, d.c. >> d-dot says the opening puts the 11th street bridge project on schedule and on budget.

a new northbound ramp directly connecting the two freeways is expected to open in the fall. jim? trying to find enough quarters to plug a meter at a metro station could be a thing of the past. the new program began today, allowing customers to pay by phone. this program is run by the same company that runs the district's pay by phone parking system. metro tells us it will test customer interest, and then decide whether to expand the program. a big afternoon for team usa. we're going to go live to london for a look at the events this morning. and a whole bunch of guns seized along with marijuana plants. plus ease this or eat that. liz crenshaw breaks

nbc's coverage of the olympic games continues tonight with a couple marquee events. men's gymnastics and another round of men and women's swimming. >> lots of excitement in the pool. while the athletes continue their quest for the gold, some are taking to twitter to express from frustration over the games. phil rogers joins us, and what is up with the empty seats? we could have come, it turns out. >> reporter: good evening.

it has been a picture-perfect day in london today, with lots of action in the pool, on the court, and even in the press. as kayakers navigated the slalom course, officials were dealing with rough waters of their own. continuing controversy over empty seats in olympic venues, most apparently were tickets allocated to no-show sponsors and official and athletes. while hundreds are being returned to public use, complaints continue. >> it's infuriating. because so many people haven't been able to get anything at all. >> reporter: on the positive side, london is getting high marks for moving the millions of people who headed to work, this the first day of week diehl competition. officials predicted an extra 3 llion olympic journeys a day.

michael phelps advanced in his signature event. outside the field of play, some frustrated athletes, including sprinter sonia richard-ross are taking to twitter, demanding a changes in olympic rules which currently bar them from using their own names and likenesses in advertising during the games. >> the majority don't have sponsors and don't have support. a lot of my peers have second and third third jobs to be able to do this. >> reporter: but for all athletes, the competition remains job one. in competition you may think of this as a backyard or picnic game, but badminton is an amazing sport. you may follow basketball more closely, however. the u.s. women will be facing off against angola later

anne arundel county police announced an arrest for a weapons charge. the suspect lives in maryland. chris jordan reports on the caches of weapons and marijuana received today. >> reporter: 24 weapons were seized as evidence. there were handguns, shotguns, rivals, including an assault weapon. also a large quantity of ammunition. nick lard dominic of gap brels, maryland faces charges after a search warrant was executed. the wells were. >> a citizen came forward about concerns of possible drug activity taking place, and it's really what began this investigation with our detectives. >> mr. dominic is charged with manufacturing marijuana with intent to distribute. possessing of firearms, all within 1,000 feet of a public

robin gardner's family is breaking their silence tonight one year after she disappeared in aruba. they say they have faith she is alive and are planning a vigil of remembrance in her hometown of frederick. gardner went missing, went on vacation with gary giordano. her sister, who spoke to news4, questions that part of the story. she's hoping someone will step forward with niismgs about what happened. >> it's been very difficult. we've been grieving the whole time. we're going to grieve forever. but after a year, i wish we had more answers. that's one of the reasons why i'm speaking now. >> the vigil is on wednesday evening at 7:30, being held at the griffin art gallery in downtown frederick. it's open to the public. a virginia man is charged
