charges of a man accused of opening fire in a crowded movie theater. james holmes was officially charged in colorado today in the attack that leave 12 people dead. witnesses say he has a much different demeanor today than in court just one week ago. jay gray is outside the courthouse in centennial, colorado now. >> reporter: jim, you're absolutely right. a short hearing today, but it did in fact provide some insight in how prosecutors plan to move forward. even though cameras are barred, we have getting insight into the man accused. the red dyed hair looks to be growing out. he was clearly more alert and responsive. 24 counts of first-degree murder, 116 attempted first-degree murder charges, two

counts for each victim, shooting after deliberation and an attitude of universal malice, manifesting extreme indifference. lives like veronica, the 6-year-old killed during. her mom was paralyzed and suffered a miscarriage after the attack. >> it was important to come and see him, who he was, and there was a lot of anger. >> reporter: dozens of family members and several survivors of the shooting spree were drawn to the courtroom today. >> when we've seen him before, he looked like he was kind of spaced out or out of touch. he looked very, very alert today, and very lose i had to what was going on. >> reporter: much different than this bizarre scene when he seemed dazed and disengaged. today he spoke for the first time publicly, answering "yes"

when asked if he wanted to waive his right to a preliminary hear. that's the time that they will most lickly use to prepare what is most likely an insanity plea. >> he had a persona of evilness to him, but he looked very sane to me. >> his fate could ultimately hinge on how holmes looks to court-appointed doctors in this emotional high-profile case. along with the 140 murder or attempted murder charges in the case, prosecutors have also charged holmes with criminal violence and possession of explosives, the latter centers on that cache of bombs pulled from his apartment. live in centennial, colorado. jay gray, news4. the woman who snatched a newborn from a new york hospital and then raised that child as her own, she will be spending the next 12 years in prison, a judge sensed her today.

fight outside the mcdonald's on 7th street this morning. at some point one of them pulled a gun and shot himself by accident. he went to an area hospital, has since been released to police custody. officials closed down 7th street in the area for several hours. it has since been reopened. a hazmat skill caused a scare this morning t crews got called for the 14800 block of swe schweitzer lane. everything inside the building was evacuated. starting today, there is finally a direct link between two of d.c.'s busiest thoroughfares, a new ramp opened today allowing drivers on 295 south to merge directly onto the 11th street bridge and then get on the southeast/southwest freeway. before this ramps, they had to go through neighborhoods to

week. romney has been in poland, meeting with the leaders there. aides say the main goal of this trip, foreign policy, but as steve handlesman reports, the former governor is fending off criticism. >> reporter: as mitt romney arrived in poland, his staff was back in damage control. the latest controversy came as romney capped off his visit to israel with a fund-raisers hosted by wealthy americans. he praised the economic success of israelis, whose average income is $31,000, versus the poverty of minds. culture makes all the difference, says romney, citing a book on development. i recognize, romney said, the power of at least culture and a few other things. minds called the remark racist, because romney failed to mention the effect of the israeli occupation. >> the. they are people, equal. >> reporter: with the candidate and his wife ann in poland,

there are conflicting reports tonight over who is in control as fighting continues in aleppo. several amateur videos uploaded today appeared to show rebels

with captured or abandoned tanks, weapons and trucks. the syrian military says it has retaken most ground in and around that city. the united nations says 200,000 syrians have fled over the border in the past ten days. nbc news has been unable to authenticate this amateur video. two teen are facing charges. police say they chased down a man and beat him to death with a shovel. why police say they did it. pat? >> reporter: wendy, indeed, the murder weapon here, a shovel. the murder suspects here, teenagers. the victim, 54-year-old dave krupski, an avid fisherman and contractor. he was remodel this apartment, and he was staying here while he did the job, and it was here that he was killed over the weekend. by phone today, i talked to his

half-brother escort burquist. >> i talked to him last sunday, and he said it was a pretty rough neighborhood, but he was okay. >> reporter: police say they were called here saturday night for reports that people were drinking, disorderly, chasing each other around. they say that turned into a case of murder. they say dave krupski ran from this apartment, up the steps, down the sidewalk, two teenager close behind. at 52nd avenue, he crossed this foot bridge. next to that creek, and as he got across the bridge, just to the other side, they say those teenagers beat him to death with that shovel. the motive -- robbery. charged with robbery, charged with murder, 17-year-old james

murray, and 16-year-old andre attaway. >> i think it's horrific. three lives wasted over something stupid. i think they got $5 is what i heard. >> reporter: back at the scene, people still talking about what happened here. it could have been me. i work in these buildings. it could have been me. you never know. people running around, robbing people, looking for robberies, so it could have been me. >> reporter: the teenagers in this case charged as adults. live in bladensburg, pat collins, news4. thank you, pat. a warning from police in ocean city, officers are looking for a man who tried to sexually assault several women. the most recent assault happened saturday night when a stranger allegedly approached a woman walking home alone and forced her to the ground. police are asking for anyone with information on these attacks to call them.

jury selection began today in a close already watched trial between two of the world's leading tech companies, apple and samsung. they're accusing each other of patent violations. a lot is riding on the outcomes, billions of, and control of the u.s. matterphone and computer tab lett markets are at stake. the trial is being held in san francisco, a jury of ten people will decide this case that's expected to last for four weeks. well, it seems like that heat wave lasted for four weeks, but we're finally get a little bit of a break. >> today it goes down just about as average assic be for the last couple days. average is not that bad when you're talking about temperatures in the upper 80s. that's exactly what we saw out there. a pretty nice shot as we look to the north and west, right across the city. what are we going to get seeing? we saw a high of 89 degrees, the average high temperature sitting at 88 degrees, so as i said,

right around the average, but once again, we still need the rain, almost 7 1/2 inches below average. a lot of you continue to talk about the lawns. out there right now, currently sitting at 85 degrees with the winds out of the southeast at about 14 miles per hour. that easterly component off the atlantic ocean, and the chesapeake has helped to keep things on the cooler side across our area. the only 90, frederick, but gaithersburg, leesburg, 81 in cambridge. right now la plata coming in, as a result of the rain showers. we do have a couple rain showers. most of these very, very light and through frederick county, seeing a few light showers also towards fairfax, but as we zoom in here, we -- this is a severe thunderstorm warning down here, but those storms are dying out, then another one to the south

and east of the culpepper region. this storm is gone. a minute ago there was a shower here. that storm is now gone, at least that shower is gone. here's one little shower around burke making its way to the north and west. another one look the border here. right along the po tom max, very light showers. now that the sun is starting to go down, we're going to lose any intensity of those showers at all. and back to the west of culpepper. what are we going to be seeing? our chances of rain will be on the increase. this guy down here, a little coastal low will make its way up the coast, but it will not affect us too much. we will see a chance for shower activity tomorrow, maybe a thunderstorm similar to today, most of us will be on the dry side. we'll still be on the warm side as we go through the day tomorrow. wednesday a frontal boundary moves from the north and west. i think we'll see a much better

chance of showers and thunderstorms on wednesday, hopefully we get some of those. once again we do need to see some rainfall. bring on the rain. partly cloudy, a for a showers, maybe a storm or two, warm, as we move on through the night tonight. tomorrow morning, partly cloudy. a nice start. can't route out an isolated shower. 66 to about 71 degrees. tomorrow afternoon, a mixture of sun and clouds, a few showers, a few storms. 85 to about 89 degrees. we're only talking about a 30% chance of showers or storms. along with that coastal low, down toward the beaches, tuesday and wednesday, a pretty good chance for at least some showers there, thursday looking good, temperatures moving back to around 86 degrees. ocean city, over toward rehobeth. right on through the day on wednesday, and then we start to

there is surveillance video from a jewelry store in d.c. shah shows the moment an armed robber pulled a gun on the owner. >> that happened last month. jackie bensen explains how it could help solve the murder of another jewelry shop owner in arlington. >> reporter: this video from june 9th shows a man in a safety vest entering the jewelry store in f street northwest minutes before closing time. he pulls a gun on the owner, who asked that we not show his face.

>> when i was robbed, i gave up the jewelry, and didn't fight, didn't question the guy, and he went on his way. >> reporter: this weekend the victim saw this image on tv, made from security camera video at capital jewelers on columbia pike, distributed by police after tommy weong was found murdered in history saturday. >> i saw the same exact dribs, same yellow vest, same hat, and he looked very, very similar to the guy that robbed and shot and killed the other guy in virginia. >> reporter: mr. weong's family is devastated, trying to come to grips with an unimaginable loss. >> he's a great man, very loving. all he's ever done is focus on his family and care for us. and never once has he burdened us with his troubles, and i just

appreciate it if everyone can bring this man to justice. >> reporter: arlington detectives bur viewed the d.c. victim. >> he's a career criminal and hopefully we can get him off the street. >> reporter: police hoped that anyone who knows who owns or owned until recently the vest and the cap like seen in the picture will give them a call. jackie bensen, news4. survivors and family members sat in a courtroom in colorado today, to hear the long list the charges against accused shooter james holmes. he's facing 24 counts of murder, two counts for every person killed in that attack inside a movie theater earlier this month. >> witnesses report that holmes seemed much more alert at the hearing today, compared to the way he looked last month. >> republican presidential candidate mitt romney is in poland today wrapping up a three-nation tour that began last week in london.

today his staff insisted his remarks yesterday about jerusalem's success were grossly mischaracterized. romney returns to the states on wednesday. d.c. police are looking for witnesses after a shooting on u street over the weekend. two women were shot at the intersection saturday morning. both victims are expected to be okay. one of them is an nbc news white house producer. nbc news released this tame today -- over the weekend nbc news white house producer shauna thomas was grazed by a bull in what appears to be a random shooting. there is an ongoing case. we are grateful shauna was treated and released. we ask for respect for her privacy. anne arundel county police acting on an anonymous tip has seized a large cache of marijuana and weapons. chris gordon reports. >> reporter: 24 weapons were seized as evidence.

there were handguns, shotguns and rifles, including an assault weapon. there's also a large quantity of ammunition. 53-year-old nicholas dominic face faces charges after a search warrant was executed by s.w.a.t. team members. the weapons were found inside outback behind a tall fence police found 46 marijuana plants, each 5 to 6 feet tall with an estimated total street value. >> this is kernel by a nuisance, and i would be remiss if i didn't mention this was within 1,000 feet of a school. that's very concerning based on the amount of children in the area there. >> reporter: police say they have no evidence there that mr. dom any ever sold drugs to any of the students. they don't know wee he owned so many weapons. >> we have no indication that mr. dominic was planning to use these weapons, to protect them, to protect his grow or be used in a violent manner. however it's a lot of weapons

for one individual in a residence with this amount of marijuana growing. >> reporter: there are only half a dozens home here on this avenue. it's a quiet neighborhood casualty to residents here. >> whatever was going on in his backyard, it doesn't disturb anything outside his little world, so what's the big deal? >> reporter: did you know there were pot plants? >> not really. >> never saw him with any drugs of any kind, never have seen anyone come and go as if -- i want i wouldn't put up with any trafficking or people coming around here. i wouldn't put up with that. >> reporter: 10 of the 24 weapons allegedly belonging to mr. dominic were registered. the federal bureau of atf will investigate to determine if any other charges will be filed. chris gordon, news4. mr. dominic says he uses the marijuana for medical reasons and has been released from jail on $25,000 bond. a head-on collision in the

hamptons has killed a man from virginia. it happened sunday afternoon on the east hampton/sag harbor turnpike up in new york. police is a a pickup truck swerved into oncoming traffic and killed another car. his wife and teenager daughter were seriously injured. the pickup truck driver also suffered serious injuries. police are investigating why that truck crossed into the oncoming lane. as of yet, no charges have been filed. a minister from maryland accused of hiding millions of dollars in assets is going to spend two years in prison. a judge today handed down that sentence to robert freeman, he's also known as dr. shine. the judge also ordered freeman to pay more than $600,000 in restitution. freeman pled guilty last year to obstructing bankruptcy proceedings. prosecutors say he used moan that belonged to the churches he

pastored to buy fancy cars and a house. he then failed to claim those assets when he filed for bankruptcy back in 2005. a large group of government contractors gathered in northern virginia today to urge congress to act before damaging automatic budget cuts take place. according to a recent report, virginia could lose as many as 200,000 if these cuts go through. julie carey reports from crystal city. >> reporter: it was an unusual sight in this hotel ballroom. defense contractors at a rally. carrying signs, wearing buttons, doning t-shirts all to warn of the job cuts if congress can't great on budget cuts. sequestration, as it's called would bring trillions of automatic cuts that had hit hard, especially in virginia. they say it's not so much their jobs they're concerned about, but the impact on the industry and the troops they support.

congress to act sooner rather than later. >> we need to stop sequestration and stop it now, not after the election, not push us to the cliff after an election. >> for the sake of the country, can we not come together, give up our respective orthodoxies and get something done for the american people? >> reporter: most of the speakers also reminded the looming cuts will also bring significant job losses in health care, manufacturing and construction. for the first time in more than a decade the lenny harris one love community festival will go out without the man who founded it. lenny harris' friends and family are planning to hold that festival next month in honor of his memory. harris was an activist who disappeared last september. his body was found months later in a well in prince george's county. three people have been arrested and charged with his murder. the festival will help provide

and welcome back, everybody. not a bad way to start off the week week at all. high temperature into the mid to upper 80s across the area. no 90s. 85 is the current temperature out there. a bit of a heat index coming in at 88. wind out of the east/southeast.

temperatures around the region, 87 in rockville, 82 in reston, 85 in ft. belvoir. huntingtown coming in at 85. we do have a couple showers and few rumbles of thunder. more right around the metro area, just a couple, around the city of fairfax, another back towards leesburg. so you have a bit of a shower, a pretty good shower, then it goes away and provides the focal point for yet another shower around the region. back towards bluement, but once again the biggest one over leesburg once again. you've already had one in your area. down to about 70, baltimore 71. la plata and 67 in leesburg, maybe a shower, but most will be on the dry side. tomorrow afternoon, same scenario, just like yesterday,

the anticipation is building for the latest high-stakes mission to mars. this is going to happen this weekend. when nasa lands its smartest and most expensive rover on the red planet, the $2.5 billion vehicle is called curiosity. it's going to enter mars' atmosphere up 13,000 miles an hour. it's too big for an airbag landing, so a device that uses parachutes and rockets will slow it to a complete stop to land safely. now you know where that 2.5 billion went to. nasa describes the sequence as seven minutes of terror. it will study whether mars ever had conditions favorable for life. coming up tonight, emergency road blocks. the i-team goes behind the scenes to show the obstacle that
