caused a small fire. firefighters got the call about 4:00 this afternoon. lightning may have hit a home. flames were shooting from the roof. firefighters got it under control quickly. no extensive damage reported. continuing to follow this stuff going on. >> we still have a severe thunderstorm watch in effect in fairfax county right now. we are watching the storm around the city of fairfax right across the area in through portions of fairfax and also towards oakton. you can see where this storm is. still a lot of lightning and very heavy rain with this. more storms around fredrick county. watch out to the north. here is the storm we are watching. fairfax right back towards the airport. this is over towards rusten and making its way towards tyson's corner here in about ten to 15 minutes. watch out for this storm this evening. high temperatures up to about 89

degrees. currently at 86 at the airport. very warm and on the muggy side. we will talk more about the thunderstorms and chances for storms through the night tonight and tomorrow. a 12-year-old boy struggling for life right now. he is the sole survivor of an parent murder suicide that left his mother, father and sister dead. pat collins is live with the latest. >> reporter: when police went into that house this morning they saw things they will not soon forget. here now from sheriff mike evans. >> it's horrible. i have seen a few in my s.w.a.t. team days and these are the worst case scenarios. you want to do something to help and there was nothing else we could have done. >> reporter: family and friends embracing and hugging each other as they try to work through the grief of this double murder

suicide. on a court named candlelight in a development named fairview estates in a place called ohhings please say a man murdered his 31-year-old wife, murdered his two-year-old daughter and then set fire to his house before shooting and killing himself. the gunman identified as 32-year-old frank hayward, jr. joe is his next door neighbor. >> very good neighbor. >> reporter: for this to happen? >> it is shocking to me. >> reporter: 12-year-old frank hayward iii survived. they say he had cuts and burns. they say he is in critical condition. jacob is a close friend. he and his father showed up at the scene and with his dad's permission i talked to jacob.

>> he tells people about how his parents are in fights a lot and how he doesn't like, sometimes he gets mad at his parents. >> reporter: this couple has a long history of domestic problems. according to court records in 2007 hayward's wife called for protective order saying she was the subject of mental and physical abuse over the last nine years. she said her husband hit me on the jaw, spit on me and broke my cell phone so i couldn't call police. recently frank hayward, jr. told friends he was selling this house. he said that he and his wife were getting separated. live in calvert county, pat collins, news 4. police are looking for answers after a deadly accident in chevy chase this morning. the driver of a car heading south on connecticut avenue lost control and struck a tree. that vehicle caught fire critically injuring the driver

and killing a female passenger. authorities don't know why the driver lost control. conneccut avenue is now reopened to traffic. we are following a developing story from capitol hill where the house is about to vote tonight on a d.c. abortion bill. this measure would ban abortions in the district after 20 weeks of pregnancy. this is based on the belief that fetuses 20 weeks or older can feel pain. this bill needs a 2/3 majority to pass. nine states have approved similar legislation. we will continue to monitor this vote throughout the evening. temperatures around here considerably warmer than the last couple of weeks and millions of people around the country would welcome a day in the 80s with some rain. the majority of the country is in an extreme drought. another heat wave in the midwest is adding to missouri. temperatures in oklahoma and arkansas soared to about 110

degrees. in iowa the heat and the lack of rain are turning farm fields to dust. they are threatening food for livestock. >> we have made three cuttings of hay. if we don't get rain our fourth cutting will not be there. there won't be anymore feed. >> rain and cooler temperatures are not expected anytime soon for much of the country. an earthquake rattled virginia earlier this morning. it was 2.4. it hit about six miles southeast of mineral. this comes nearly one year after that powerful 5.8 quake hit that same area, august 23rd. it caused extensive damage to a school and other buildings and cracked the washington monument. now to london and another exciting day at 2012 olympic games. here is a live look at the host city. night four will bring some of

granddaughter took the silver medal in team equestrian today. from that most gentile of sports to one of the most physical u.s. judo athlete had to be bandaged to continue his medal pursuit which came up short that on a day when michael phelps continued his quest to be the most decorated. in the pool franklin in the free style final. meanwhile questions surround another sensation. her gold medal performance was so dominant some in the sport are suspicious. >> we have never seen any swim that has been that far outside the range of previous swims that has not proven later on to be tainted by doping. >> reporter: the ioc says so far there is no evidence of that.

snatched at gun point from her home. police are releasing a video of the suspect and this sketch hoping it will lead to an arrest. here is the video police say of the suspect of violet ripken. it was taken at a retail establishment on the day of her abduction. >> people in that area might see that video and recognize having some kind of contact with that individual, seeing something suspicious, seeing the vehicle. >> reporter: police are also released this sketch of the suspect based on descriptions witnesses have given throughout the investigation. >> although the video is good, it is a good quality. we think that the sketch gives us something to look apt front face and maybe just generated a tip or two for us. >> reporter: the mother of orioles hall of famer cal ripken was taken at gun point, tied up,

blind folded and released unharmed on her street the same day. it is unknown if the kidnapper knew he had taken the famous baseball player's mom. >> it is unusual for our area but unusual nationwide, i would think. >> reporter: police at this point say they have not identified a motive in this case and they are not saying whether the suspect took anything from the victim. darcy spencer, news 4. the team of police officers from george mason university was honored today for saving an infant from a hot car. the child was left in the parking lot on june 7th. they arrived to find the baby hot and sweating and the car door was locked. the officers busted through a car window to get the car to safety. the driver of the vehicle was the child's nanny charged with felony child abuse. coming up spoiler alerts

remember our power outages after the big storm at the end of june. imagine being in india where 620 million people don't have power for a second day because of a massive, massive failure. this outage one of the largest in history. a smaller one yesterday left a few hundred million in the dark. and india's government power minister is blaming local governments for taking more power than their daily allotment. to the presidential race both president obama and his republican rival mitt romney were focused on foreign policy today. romney is wrapping up an

overseas trip. in the meantime the president put new sanctions on iran. some say the president's move is proof that romney's trip was more than mishaps. >> reporter: mitt romney finished his foreign tour with a swipe at president obama praising poland for sharing the republican's faith in free enterprise. >> rather than heeding the false promise of a government dominated economy poland decided to stimulate innovation, attract investment, expand trade and live within its means. >> reporter: romney did not mention poland has 12.4% unemployment and mandatory helsh insurance like obama health care. back on capitol hill today romney's republican senate allies tried again to repeal. romney's trip was rushed. in his reel he says culture

government going through the election into next year. i'm steve handelsman news 4. today urged president obama to take back his endorsement of gay marriage warning that not doing so could cost him the election. >> i would hope that the president would become wise, come to his senses and knowt that he has made a mistake and we can come back together the people who put him in office and come back together and admit he made a mistake. he has made a bad mistake that will effect the history of this country. >> that group represents a coalition of more than 3,000 pastors. it plans to launch a nationwide campaign calling it the mandate for marriage urging black voters not to support president obama unless he attracts his

endorsement of gay marriage. this happened yesterday in a beach town. witnesses say the man was swimming with a son when they saw a dorsal fin and heard screaming. he suffered severe cuts on both legs believed to be shark bites. state officials say they are investigating but can't confirm it was a shark. wasn wasn't "jaws" filmed up there? >> no. >> new england. >> north of here. >> we will consult the map. you tell us about your map. are these storms still coming through? my map is talking about storms across the area and some of those severe storms. fairfax county still a severe thunderstorm warning until 6:30. earlier today the storms came right over downtown d.c. a lot of people were carrying their umbrellas. you may need umbrellas for the

rest of the evening. if you don't have an umbrella sometimes a book works well. you can see dark clouds and rain off into distance. that is exactly where it is in the distance from d.c. and fairfax county. we have seen numerous showers and thunderstorms developing. these develop quickly and die out and develop more storms across the region. a few storms and showers up there. very northern portion of montgomery county. here is the one storm we are watching through fairfax county. severe thunderstorm warning in effect until 5:30. this starting to weaken a little bit. you saw very heavy rain and now just lighter rain along route 50 and right up 123 towards tyson's corner. the heaviest rain right along dulles toll road and down towards the lawyers road area and then towards hunters mill road. you can see a lot of

thunderstorms in this area, a lot of heavy rain in this area. watch out if you are out and along the dulles toll road. 90 degrees our high temperature today. 90 once again. just a little bit above average. most of this month has been well above average. 22 of 31 days have been at or above 90. eight of those have been at or above 100. we will be happy to get rid of the month of july. moving in the august the hot side. 86 the current temperature with winds out of the south. 78 in martinsburg. 72 in winchester and 75 in gath sburg. that is rain cooled air. we have needed that rain. good thing for some of us we did get much needed rain. you can see the numerous showers and storms as well as cloud cover today. we got a bit of a frontal boundary going to continue to make its way down to the south

during the day tomorrow. that will become a focal point. we have a lot of moisture and the heat out there so it will not take a lot to produce the showers and storms. you want to make sure you have the umbrella with you. you can take a purse umbrella but will see heavier down pours. by thursday high pressure moves in. we get rather hot as we move into the first week of august with temperatures in the mid 90s. this evening partly cloudy. 79 to 84 degrees. as the sun goes down we are really going to lose the intensity. tomorrow morning partly cloudy, isolated showers. temperatures 69 to about 73 degrees. tomorrow afternoon mostly cloudy. temperatures 87 to about 91 degrees tomorrow so on the warm and rather muggy side. the next few days warmer and muggier. 94 on your thursday. 96 on friday. temperatures on friday 96 but the heat index could be around

some people are calling missy franklin the golden girl now and millions of people watched her win the first gold medal last night in the 100 meter back stroke. >> a lot of people found out she won before that race. nbc ran a promo for the today show when it showed her celebration after she won. >> when you are 17 years olds and win your first gold medal there is nobody you would rather share it with. we are there when missy franklin and her parents reunite live from london tomorrow.

>> last night i was watching swimming and missy franklin was going to race. i happened to look at my computer and on the website it said she won. i said i know what will happen. >> reporter: the olympic games began in ancient time and modern technology is bringing it to us in more ways than ever imagined. >> one event we will not spoil is the outcome of the team final in women's gymnastics. this year team usa consists of some of the most aspiring athletes including one young woman from virginia. jim handly has more on gabby douglas. >> she has been front and center on the women's gymnastics team. fans call 16-year-old gabby douglas the flying squirrel. a team coordinator gave gabby that nickname based on the height she gets on the uneven bars. that is gabby's signature event.

former illinois police officer drew peterson charged with first degree murder in the 2004 drowning death of his third wife. he is also suspected but not charged in the 2007 disappearance of his fourth wife. a community trying to come to grips tonight with an awful scene, a double murder suicide this morning. police say 32-year-old frank hayward jr. killed his wife and two-year-old daughter and then killed himself. the couple also has a 12-year-old son who is in the hospital in critical condition. police hope newly released video will help capture the man they believe kidnapped cal ripken's mother. the kidnapper took violet ripken from her home. she was released unharmed. a man who has killed three

teenagers is out of the hospital now. all of the shootings happened within a couple of miles of each other. somebody fired shots into a group of teenagers. one teenager injured there. ten minutes later two more kids were hit in a drive by. shortly after that somebody shot and killed a man nearby. a man who lives in the neighborhood says it is normally really quiet. >> i saw the lights and i looked out and thought it was nothing. sometimes the cops go back and forth. this morning my friends called me and said your house is on the news. i was like why. he said that apparently what he is getting is somebody got shot in front of my house. >> investigators do not believe the shootings last night are related. a closer look today at what caused a deadly bus crash on i-ai i-95 in virginia. the national transportation safety board is accusing the company for having no regard for

passenger safety and says a federal agency is sharing part of that blame. julie carey with that story. >> reporter: may 31st, 2011 a trip ended abruptly when a sky express bus overturned along i-95 after a tired driver fell asleep at the wheel. four passengers were killed. today the national transportation safety members watched the simulation showing how the bus rolled over. those who died were crushed. the accident took place weeks after sky express got its second unsatisfactory review in just two years. still the company was allowed to keep operating. that is why today the chairman blamed not only the driver but also the agency that oversees bus safety. >> i think the consumers were failed by this driver who fell asleep, by the operator who did not put safety first and the

regulator that did not put a bad operator out of service when they had multiple opportunities to do so. >> reporter: more recently the fmsca has responded by cracking down on curb side carriers that travel the east coast. 26 companies were shut down last month. as a result of the investigation into the crash the ntsb is recommending all bus companies get monitored for compliance and want new carriers to prove safety fitness before they are allowed to roll. the american bus association welcomes the recommendations and recent legislation. >> companies like this i don't think are going to be able to slip through the cracks. >> reporter: as part of the crash review the ntsb examined whether seat belts would have prevented deaths they found they could not protect injuries when the roof caved in. don't expect to see seat belts on buses right work on

the express toll lanes on i-95 from garrisonville road to etsl road. cars with three or more people will ride free. construction will begin next month and say it will be completed in 2014. a line of street caricize a step closer to reality.

the columbia pike street car would run in fairfax county. leaders are hoping it will help revitalize the business district. the street car project is expected to cost about a quarter of a billion. southern maryland hospital is being purchased. the hospital was founded in 1977 and is going to receive more than $100 million in improvements. the hospital serves prince gorges, calvert and st. mary's counties. the hospital sees more than 65,000 people in the emergency room every year. a warning from charles county health officials. one of several bats found in an apartment complex has tested positive for rabies. so far only one of the bats has been caught and tested. two people who live in the apartments have gone through a series of shots.

so far the lakes have not had more than algae blooms this year possibly because of rain and wind which keeps them. lake superior at 90 degrees. >> like you make a cup of tea. this aircraft made history in maryland. a lot of people thought they might be seeing a flying saucer. it is a new drone known as the x 47 b and made its first flight over the weekend. that drone will make history this fall with becoming the first unmanned military aircraft to be stationed at sea. >> so it takes off by itself. it flies around the premanned mission. it is controlled via keend and mouse. >> what is unique about this aircraft is that nobody has operated an unmanned system of tactical aircraft size on an

welcome back. a typical july afternoon. temperatures in the upper 80s. scattered showers and thunderstorms out there. 86 degrees the current temperature with the heat index of 89 degrees. dew point at 67. temperatures around the region you can tell where we have seen the rain. resten 74. 82 in camp springs. you have seen the 80s right now no rain over the last hour or so. washington at 86 we saw pretty good rain here a little bit earlier. here is the one storm over washington. watch where this one goes. it storms right here and moves throu through the district and moves through the north. a couple of more storms one in fairfax county moved through montgomery and fredrick and almost to the pennsylvania border. there are a few more to the south. this one former moving through the warrenton area.
