tonight an explosive allegation by the psychiatrist treating the man charged in the colorado movie massacre and the parallel to virginia tech. big time heat trying to move our way. chick-fil-a is a battleground on gay marriage and tonight is part one. i hear a primal scream. >> the virginia daughter who lifted a car to save her dad. we begin tonight with new develops in the colorado movie theater massacre. a psychiatrist at the university of colorado denver reportedly raised concerns about accused gunman james holmes in june. that warning came several weeks before 12 people were killed and 60 others wounded in a midnight

screening of "the dark knight rises" the psychiatrist was alarmed by his behavior he notified the campus threat assessment team. the university never contacted the aurora police. the university has not commented on the report. some are comparing it to the 2007 shooting in virginia tech where the university was accused of ignoring warnings. a survivor of the tragedy who was shot in the head is out of the hospital. she underwent brain surgery. she had plans to come to the university of maryland for graduate school this fall according to a fundraising website set up by the family. she is starting rehab in colorado. the man accused of threatening to carry out a shooting in prince george's county owned an arsenal of weapons but the charge against him is not as serious as some

would like it to be. it's just a misdemeanor. wendy rieger is here to explain the legal blind. >> reporter: neil prescott threatened to shoot up his office. he has 20 guns but he only charged for using a telephone. he called the pitny bows firm and referred to himself as a joker and said he was going to load up his guns and fire everybody up. they found 20 guns and 40 boxes of ammunition in his apartment. but because maryland has no felony threat law on its books, prescott is charged with misdemeanor misuse of a phone. the top prosecutor said they wanted to do more. >> i absolutely believe that the charges are insufficient to cover a threat like the threat mr. prescott made. he should be facing felony charges not just misdemeanor

forward. >> if anyone has information on where she is, come forward. don't be shy about it. this would help our entire family. >> reporter: a family helped by remembrances and caring friends. in frederick, jim rosenfield, news4. news of a crisis narrowly averted at national airport. the faa says three u.s. airways commuter jets came within seconds of a midair collision. the planes had to be rerouted because of bad weather south of the airport. the faa says two planes taking off were too close together and they almost ran into another plane that was landing. the planes eventually did land and take off safely. officials are blaming poor aircraft communication and appropriate action will be taken. a passenger discovered a sewing needle on a flight from

victoria to toronto on monday. it's too soon to know in the case is related to needles found on delta flights last month. those had taken off from amsterdam and headed to american cities. flames are burning up to the driveways of mansions in the california hills. firefighters are trying to save the luxury homes. they knew they lost the battle at one house and went in to save pets. this fire started earlier today. it was started by a piece of equipment used to clear brush. about 200 acres have burned so far. the florida judge in the george zimmerman case denied a motion tody qualify himself for being prejudiced. a judge questioned his honesty and said he was plotting to leave the country. zimmerman is charged with murder. he has pleaded not guilty.

seven stores are on alert after five robberies in four hours. the holdups happened on wednesday morning four in prince george's county and one in d.c. photos from inside the store on u street show the gunman wearing ski masks. police believe the crimes are connected. turning to politics, president obama is making a campaign stop in lees burg tomorrow to talk about his economic plan. the president will speak at loudoun county high school. he is going to be calling for an extension of middle class tax cuts. mitt romney is expected to push his economic agenda in the coming weeks. calling for tax cuts. but the democrats say it favors the wealthy. romney says it would help the middle class. in virginia they released a bald eagle today. a handler set the eagle free. two months ago, that eagle was

found, thin and hydrated, near boeing air force base in d.c. it had a scratch on its face. the eagle is healthy, stretching her wings big time. in 1977 there were 60 bald eagles in virginia. today there are estimated to be more than 1,000 of them. a smart car but the driver, not so much. an incredible feat as a woman in virginia saves her father, pinned under a car. too close to call. >> another nail biter at the olympics. michael phelps' journey to greatness and the local athlete who helped make it possible. i got the chance to start my own business. i know what it's like to hire people and to make ends meet. from those experiences, i had the chance of running the olympics. the games were in real trouble. there'd been way too much spending. and in massachusetts i found a budget that was badly out of balance. our legislature was 85% democrat.

police down in texas were involved in a chase that for a minute looked like something out of a cartoon show. they were chasing a smart car around houston. they tried to pull the driver over on the highway but he refused to stop. the cops chased him on to city streets. the driver finally decided to give up. he stopped in his own driveway. he was arrested for dwi and facing more charges as a result of the chase. in virginia a woman is hailed as a hero for saving her father's life. he was working under his car. a jack slipped and the car fell on top of him. his daughter found her father pinned to the ground. she jumped into action and single handedly lifting the ton

and a half car off her father. >> lifted up right here. and just kind of threw it, shoved my body into it and came back and dragged him out and started cpr. it flashed i'm going to lose my dad. his eyes were open but he was not responding to me. >> he is in intensive care at vcu. he has broken ribs but there was no any permanent damage. the fifth day of the olympic games was good for the gymnastics team. dan el leyva made an incredible comeback after a disappointing exercise on the the pommel horse he fell to 19th place but brought it back with a big performance on the parallel bars. in the pool today, two big wins for the usa. on the women's side they win the

200 meter freestyle rely. a surprise win in the 100 meter freestyle. he won by .01 second. dan hellie has a look at two local swimmers in london. >> reporter: despite all the medals they are still debating whether michael phelps is the greatest olympian of all time. he now has 19 total medals. he raced the 4x200 freestyle relay and got a gold but got help from a local kid, matt mclean from sterling swam the second leg of the preliminary race setting them up for success in the finals. he didn't get to take part in the medals ceremony. but he did get a gold medal. >> it was awesome. i knew my teammates would take care of it to. be on the relay in the morning was an honor.

and did what i could to help the team out. another fresh-faced phenom, kat katie lidecki. she is going to race in the prelims of the 800 meter freestyle tomorrow morning along with kate zeigler. we caught up with ledeki's mom. >> we don't have any expectations for her at this meet. we want her to swim well. if she makes finals we'll be thrilled. we'll have another event we can go and see her swim. she loves the sport. she loves every big meet that she gets to swim in. she loves the competition. >> mary, jen and her family happy to be a part of the olympic games. just another meet, to them.

that's for sure. later today it will get hot. the temperature 79 degrees. the dew point of 70. the humidity is starting to come up. tomorrow will be a hot and humid day. a lot more so than it was during your wednesday. 73 in fredericksburg and 72 right now in la plata. the temperatures not that bad. not a lot of rain for most of us. but some areas saw big storms including the west virginia panhandle and virginia, martinsburg and manassas. they saw three different storms come over that region. and fairfax county saw those three storms. out there now nothing on the radar. we will stay dry through the night tonight and most of the day tomorrow. the only exception maybe back to the mountains. you can see the storms developing and the clearing skies. the storms making their way to the south and east. here also comes an area of high

pressure. the frontal boundary moving through the region. it's not going to be a cold area of high pressure. this moves in from the west and allows our temperatures to move back into the mid-90s tomorrow. temperatures around 94 in d.c. with a heat index around 97 and 98. hotter during the day on friday. not talking about records but talking about big heat. high pressure on your friday and hotter with a chance of showers and storms over toward the mountains. not even in the five to seven-day forecast. only 20% will see the showers and storms. tomorrow morning mostly clear. 64 to 73 degrees. tomorrow afternoon, mostly sunny and hot and a bit on the humid side. temperatures 90 to 95. not a lot of relief tomorrow. the next couple days, a high of 96 on friday. some areas close to 100 degrees. it will feel like 100 in most

areas. saturday and sunday, low to mid-90s and chance of storms last you this the beginning of next week. i've got the next seven days in a row at 90 degrees or higher. we have seen that before. now we're moving into a new month. kind of like the same heat. >> kind of like the last month. >> hopefully not quite as hot. >> thanks, doug. over the next four months, you have a choice to make.

not just between two political parties, or even two people. it's a choice between two very different plans for our country. governor romney's plan would cut taxes for the folks at the very top. roll back regulations on big banks. and he says that if we do, our economy will grow and everyone will benefit. but you know what? we tried that top down approach. it's what caused the mess in the first place. i believe the only way to create an economy built to last is to strengthen the middle class. asking the wealthy to pay a little more so we can pay down our debt in a balanced way. so that we can afford to invest in education, manufacturing, and home-grown american energy for good middle class jobs. sometimes politics can seem very small. but the choice you face, it couldn't be bigger. ♪ i'm barack obama and i approve this message.

training camp continued today with where a few of the guys got a day off from mike shanahan. how do they do that? today with only being the sixth day of practice in camp. the question was asked isn't it too early for a rest? >> kerrigan missed a few days a year ago and didn't miss a play in the season. i had to give him a break some time. london is 37 years old. every time he is on the practice field, he practices like he is 22. i have to force him into retirement for a day or two. >> you have to love that guy. more news from the olympics, venus williams lost in the third round today but it's serena is still doing it. she goes to the quarter final. she will face wozniacki. the women's basketball team was playing turkey.

we recently donated a number of our incubators to a hospital in east london, homerton. we take the sickest and the most premature and the smallest babies in the whole area. [ mother #1 ] they're lovely in here. they're absolutely brilliant. i couldn't ask for any better. their first chance of life is not the greatest. and so i think, just being here to help them through that first chance in life is amazing.
