is hitting the battleground states and hitting republican challenger mitt romney hard in a new ad that charges romney's tax plan would benefit the wealthy and hurt the middle class. >> chances are you pay a higher tax rate than him. >> reporter: the president stopped off in florida before heading to loudon county. >> they have tried to sell us this trickle down tax cut fairy dust before. and guess what. it didn't work then. it will not work now. >> reporter: while mitt romney was in colorado, his campaign bus rolled into leesburg as top figures in his virginia campaign blasted the president's economic record as abysmal. they say romney's business background will bring results. >> as somebody who has grown businesses, understands how the private sector works and is going to turn this country around just the way you turned around the olympics, he turned around his state. >> but those heading to the

rally contend his leadership saved the economy from a worse fate. >> this was on the down slide before he even got into office. so i think it's unfair for people to just lay it squarely on his shoulders. >> the president inherited a mess. there were too many profiteers in the economic system, and the middle class was hurt as a result. and i think the president is the best one to lead us back to prosperity. >> the campaigns do agree on this. loudon county is a battleground within the battleground of virginia, a key to victory in the commonwealth. barack obama captured loudon in 2008, but republicans think the political tide has turned. >> loudon county is absolutely essential. and that's why we are so excited that for three years in a row, republicans have been rising and winning nearly every single office across the board here in loudon county. >> reporter: now the romney campaign tells me their candidate will be returning to the commonwealth very soon. he'll be touring around in that bus you saw in my report.

and political observers are guessing that next time he comes to virginia, he may have his vice presidential running mate by his side. reporting live from leesburg, news 4. there's a new poll out that shows the president leading in several important swing states. the study comes from the "new york times" and cbs news. in pennsylvania, the president is polling at 53% compared to 42% for mitt romney. the poll also has the president ahead in ohio, 50% compared to 44% for romney. and in florida, 51% of those surveyed said they would vote for president obama compared to 45% who choose romney. there are some disturbing new reports about the suspect in the colorado theater shooting. weeks before the attack, the allege gunman james holmes may have called a tv producer who was working on a batman-type movie. the caller said he watched the

trailer for that more than 100 times. we've also learned that a psychiatrist at the university of colorado who treated holmes was alarmed by his behavior. she warned the school about him in early june, reportedly, one month later holmes allegedly opened fire at a theater in aurora, colorado, killing 12 people wounding nearly 60 others. sources say the university did not take action because holmes was in the process of dropping out of school. and this man was arrested yesterday after some tense moments sent people running out of a movie theater in indianapolis. witnesses told police the suspect walked in while a movie was playing, sat down on the front row and started yelling and cursing at the screen and at moviegoers. he left the theater twice. the last time he pointed a finger at the audience as if it were a gun. he ran out again and was arrested. it happened at the bowtie cinemas. the suspect 25-year-old kyle tanner was charged with disorderly conduct and reckless endangerment. hot and humid out there today. some storms have moved on.

doug is keeping an eye on all of this. doug, what can we expect? >> reporter: out here on the storm 4 weather deck, and what can we expect for this evening? nice conditions, i think. it'll be warm and on the humid side. but the thunderstorms many of us saw a little bit earlier are now out of here. let's take a look and show you how things are right now. 90 degrees currently at the airport, winds out of the east at about 10 miles per hour. take a look at the heat index. right now that heat index in washington is 95, it's 99 in la plata. a warm and humid evening. and that's what we're going to see for the rest of the evening. a lot of you in prince georges county saw heavy rainfall, now the closest storms down in the southern portions of st. mary's county. watching those plus talking a lot more about the weekend. and we've got a new tropical storm to talk about in the atlantic. where that is where it's heading in a minute. >> thank you, doug. day six of the london

olympics and a history making day for team usa. one athlete is doing something no u.s. olympian has done before. there's a lot to talk about in the games today. the u.s. adds to the medal count and we're gearing up for a big night on prime time. live in london with more. mark? >> reporter: good evening, doreen. from the wind tunnel that is london, england, this evening, we're getting blown around a little bit here. but so far in these games, swimming and gymnastics have dominated the headlines competition wise in the united states. but today, it was time for a lower profile sport to cast a golden glow. great britain awoke to see the iconic tower bridge bathed in olympic gold, celebrating the nation's first gold medals of the games yesterday. but early today, the american gold rush continued. >> america versus great britain -- >> at excel arena, more u.s. olympic gold and history today as kayla harrison won the first ever american gold medal in

judo. brought to tears as she received the medal and heard her national anthem. >> i pictured it every night for the last four years and feels real. >> at the same hall, russian president vladimir putin who has written a book on judo cheered his nation and his gold medal performance. at the arena, ann romney was cheering her house in early rounds. at the lords cricket ground, loric came up short in her quest for the medal, but the woman who taught "hunger games" star jennifer lawrence to shoot, provided one of the most memorable images, an arrow that hit the camera in the center of the bull's eye. a disappointing day, but an olympic moment. >> reporter: and coming up tonight on nbc's prime time coverage, women's gymnastics, the individual all around

competition, gabby douglas and . live in london for news 4, back to you. >> thank you, mark. swimmer from bethesda has blazed past all expectations today. and now she's poised to take home a medal. we'll hear from katie ladecky in our next half hour. a close call at national airport yesterday afternoon. three planes flew dangerously close to one another. but tonight, the faa says passengers were never in any real danger. chris gordon with more now on this near miss over at national. >> reporter: it happened here at reagan national airport in the sky high above and beyond rosalind, virginia. three commuter planes with 192 passengers onboard flew too close for comfort. today at reagan national airport, passengers were aware of tuesday's mishap but didn't seem too concerned. >> they didn't collide.

it's not a big deal. >> i flew in from u.s. airways from the logan airport in boston so i heard about the near miss and that was scary. >> they were never on a collision course to hit head-on according to transportation secretary ray lahood. tuesday afternoon, traffic controllers had to redirect planes because of bad weather south of the airport. one u.s. airways commuter flight approaching from rosalind came close to a flight path of two commuter flights taken off heading toward rosalind. >> there was a loss of separation. it shouldn't have happened, but because of a well-trained controller at dca tower who immediately recognized the situation and worked to fix it. >> reporter: kevin hyatt was a commercial pilot for 32 years. he is now with the flight safety foundation. >> well, we had a situation that

evolved from a very complex procedure of where you're turning an airport around. which means you're taking off from one runway and you're going to go to another runway. and when that happens, there's a lot that has to take place in a short period of time. and evidently there was a gap in the communication or in something because the investigation is still ongoing to cause the situation to arise. >> audio recordings of the communications between the inbound pilot and the controller shows some confusion. >> what happened? >> we've got 3329 standby -- standby. >> okay. >> we've got to get on the ground here pretty quick. >> the national air traffic controllers association released a statement saying safety is natca's top priority. we will participate in any investigation that looks into improving the system. >> it's important to note that all three flights involved in tuesday's mishap reach their destinations safely. none of the passengers were injured in any way and many probably didn't even know they

another crime victim who stepped forward to help. >> thank you so much from me and my family. >> gratitude from 25-year-old desmond wong who lost his beloved father way too soon. >> i greatly appreciate him releasing that video and having the courage and bravery to help my family through this and giving, you know, the police and everything they needed to capture this person. >> the arrest of 52-year-old james sylvester caroline of the district comes five days after tommy wong was found dead in his capital jewelers store in arlington, mr. wong was 52 years old. the arrest comes three days after this chilling security camera video was aired. ken stein provided it to news 4 after he realized that the televised image of the safety-vest wearing suspect looked a lot like the man caught on camera robbing his store in the district last month. >> i felt bad that, you know, he

had to go through that. and it is sad, it's a sad case that a guy did lose his life over somebody stealing a little bit of jewelry. >> reporter: flowers and candles remain from a vigil held in front of capital jewelers wednesday night. right now, the suspect is charged with a probation violation, but he is expected to face murder charges in the death of tommy wong. reporting live in arlington, jackie benson, news 4. >> thank you, jackie. the man who once led the united nations has quit his effort to end civil war in syria. annan announced today he's stepping down as special envoy to syria. he criticized world powers for not doing more to stop the chaos and called on syria's president to leave office. also today, a syrian human rights group claimed government forces killed 47 civilians as that war continues to escalate. an estimated 20,000 people have died since the uprising began in march of 2011. steel beam signed by

president obama was placed near the top of the skyscraper at 1 world trade center in new york city today. president obama wrote, we remember, we rebuild, we come back stronger. he visited the construction site with the first lady back in june. that skyscraper is being built to replace the twin towers destroyed on september 11th. more than 100 construction workers also signed the beam before it was lifted to the 104th floor. the building is expected to be completed in 2014. nbc 4 will co-host a debate next month between two former virginia governors running for the u.s. senate. george allen and tim kaine will square off in the virginia debate on pressing business issues. it will be moderated by david gregory of "meet the press" and news 4's julie carey. you can watch that debate live on nbc 4 at noon september 20th and again on sunday 23rd right after "meet the press." doug's here now with a check on

our forecast. humid and muggy out there today. i forecasted the temperature at 94 degrees and normally you go, i think that's what we'll get. we got to 96. >> okay. >> it's like we can't -- we're forecasting a little too low, mother nature's saying you've got to go higher. tomorrow, i'm raising the temperature up to about 97 degrees. how about that? it even looks hazy, hot, and humid out there across our region. and that's exactly what you expect this time of year. however, we've seen a lot of heat. as a matter of fact, take a look at this stat. yes, we hit 96 degrees today, but this is the 23rd day this summer at or above 95. not just 90, but at or above 95. that is over three weeks with temperatures over 95 degrees, and we're not quite done yet. we still have a lot of august left to go and that is some of the hottest there still to come this summer. as far as temperatures right now, we're sitting at 90 degrees, 69 is that current dew point, humidity at 50%, it is a little bit on the humid side. temperatures right now into the

80s to lower 90s. 84 in gaithersburg, 88 in fredericksburg. the heat index today did get close to 100 in many areas and i think it will get even more above 100 during the dame tomorrow. maybe between 98 and 102 as far as that heat index is concerned tomorrow. another very hot day. as far as storms go, out towards prince georges county, watch these develop. they developed along the bay breeze, the bay set in a little bit of a wind breeze that came in and that helped to spark some of those showers and thunderstorms earlier this afternoon. those areas cooled down considerably. as a matter of fact, the airport went down to 86 and right back up to 90 the next hour. satellite and radar showing a few showers and thunderstorms down to our south. back here to the west, nothing going on. i think tomorrow, mostly clear skies, just a chance, an isolated chance of some thunderstorms. something else we're watching, this little guy down here. this is tropical storm ernesto. the tropics have been quiet over the last couple of months, really past month or so. but now starting to heat up a

little bit. ernesto making its way to the west, winds of 50 miles an hour. still pretty healthy tropical storm expected to move into the caribbean. could pose a potential threat to jamaica. if you have plans to go to jamaica or over toward cancun, heads up in those areas, could become a strong tropical storm around jamaica and possibly a minimal hurricane as it approaches cancun. we're going to watch this one very closely on this path and continue into the gulf and have almost no impact on us at least directly. now, as far as our weather's concerned here, high pressure over us, remaining hot right on through the rest of the evening sto tonight. and again tomorrow. i expect tomorrow to be fairly dry, but then the showers and thunderstorms, they're going to try and return during the day on saturday. temperatures on saturday, once again, into the mid-90s. we have today, tomorrow, and saturday that are going to be the hottest of the next couple. mostly clear skies this evening, warm and humid with a few storms out there. they're all dying out. 83 to about 88 degrees. tomorrow morning, mostly clear, another good start, warm and muggy, temperatures 6 to about

77 degrees and as we move on through the next couple of days, high of 97 tomorrow, 94 on your saturday, but, hey, might as well bump that up to 95. 93 on sunday. 90 on monday, and it does look like we'll stay at or above 90 all the way through the next seven days. and we'll have a chance of thunderstorms just about every day too, although they will not be too widespread. one area that did see some rain down around mt. vernon saw a little shower. today is thursday and that means it's time for our backyard weather. we sent veronica out today. she just had a little pulled pork a little bit earlier and right now, veronica, you're standing by the grill. that's not fair. >> reporter: well, i'm sorry, i will bring you back some. i will do that even though you don't do that to me. okay. earlier during the 5:00 show, you had a chance to meet shirl gardner, we are in mt. vernon area of alexandria, now it's clay's turn. say hi. >> hi, how are y'all? >> reporter: what do you have on

this is a high school girl from montgomery county who is having absolutely the summer of her life. katie ledecky already surprised her folks by just qualifying for the olympics. >> tomorrow she might surprise the world by winning a medal. jim handly with more. >> katie ledecky is officially a team swimming sensation at the summer olympic games. we saw her swimming the qualifying meets this morning. and out of 36 competitors she had the third fastest time.

a hair under 8:24. what is also impressive about katie is her age, at 15, she's the youngest olympian on team usa this year. no doubt about it, her local fans are excited to see her swim tomorrow. she's from bethesda, maryland, a student at the stone ridge school at the sacred heart. now let's take a look back at the race that got her to london. this is the video that we remember. ledecky won the 800-meter trials with an even faster time, 8:19.78, now their daughter could be standing on that podium. she swims in the 800-meter freestyle final tomorrow. jim and doreen, back to you. >> wow. >> katie's friends and neighbors here at home are planning a big watch party for tomorrow's final. >> they told news 4 that they've had their eyes on her for years and are confident she's going to do great things. >> reporter: a bethesda teen now america's swimming sweetheart. 15-year-old katie ledecky

heading into the 800-meter freestyle. but her path toward a medal started at a local pool. ledecky is well known at the palisades swim club. look, her name is on the winners' board time and time again, each time setting a different club record. but those who have watched the teen sensation swim as a kid still can't believe how far she's come. >> how fun to have said that she's been in my lane. so i won't mind when she swims in my lane again. >> a banner proudly proclaims ledecky is a stone ridge girl. the school has posters prepared for a watch party friday and t-shirts were printed up to support the soft-spoken sophomore. >> she's such an unassuming person and student that many of us who met her for the first time in the last two years had no idea of her potential where she was going. because she's an ordinary kid who can do extraordinary things. >> ledecky's mom knew her

daughter had olympic potential. but before the qualifying swim she said in london, she never dreamed it would all happen so soon. >> we don't have any expectations for her at this meet. we want her to swim well and if she makes finals, we'll be thrilled because we'll have another event that we can go and see her swim. >> reporter: the ledecky fan club is growing fast, but those who have known her from the start say she's doing her hometown proud and they will be watching tomorrow. in bethesda, richard jordan, news 4. >> well, it's clear that katie ledecky's friends and family are excited. we'll hear from the star swimmer herself. dan hellie spoke with ledecky after her qualifying race in london. we'll have that coming up in sports. right now president obama is about to make a campaign stop in virginia. he'll rally at loudon county high school in about an hour. in the meantime, mitt romney is campaigning tonight in colorado. scientists have discovered a new strain of the swine flu.

they call it h3n2. 41 cases have been confirmed, but health officials believe there have been many more. scientists do not believe this will turn into a crisis like the swine flu epidemic of 2009. the centers for disease control is making preparations so that it can make a new vaccine in a few months. if it becomes necessary. police are trying to figure out if a body found in prince georges county could be connected to the case of a missing d.c. woman. someone found a woman's body wrapped in a bag floating in swan creek in ft. washington. pat collins spoke with the possible victim's family tonight. >> what do you think happened here? >> i think it's foul play. >> reporter: this is security camera video of phillips when she was last seen. it was monday morning. she was dropping off her 2-year-old daughter at a day care center in northeast. she never picked up her daughter that day.

and she's not been heard from since. her mother wants some answers. worried for her? >> just want her to come home. just bring her home. >> reporter: phillips is 23 years old. she lives in the benning park apartments in southeast. she was supposed to start a hotel job this week, but she never showed up for that. her parents say she was devoted to her baby girl deniya, she was never late to pick her up, and when she didn't show monday, everybody got worried. >> if you could make a plea to someone who knows something about this -- >> i'd give them whatever they asked for, just bring my daughter home. you can have whatever. >> reporter: investigators looking into the possibility that a body found in prince georges county might be linked to this case. this is swan creek down near ft. washington. this is where the discovery was made. it was about 8:30 last night.

some people who live around here saw a large athletic bag floating in the creek. they called 911. when police got here, they opened the bag and found the body of a woman inside. so far the woman in the water has been unidentified. but the family of phillips says police have come by to collect dna samples and dental information. also last night someone broke into phillips' apartment. they say her computer and many other items are missing. was this a coincidence? or someone trying to retrieve items that might link him to her disappearance? >> now, if you've seen phillips, if you know anything about this case, please call the police. in southeast, pat collins, news 4. a fairfax county man was convicted of killing an

8-year-old boy with his car and likely will spend the next seven years in prison. victor aldana was sentenced today for running over chavez back in january. a child was walking with his mother along a road in alexandria when they were both hit. the mother survived. aldana's blood alcohol at the time was nearly twice the legal limit. the judge handed down a 22-year sentence today with 15 years of that time suspended. coming up on "news 4 at 6:00," a doctors visit could soon be replaced by a pill. >> how are we looking out there, doug? >> a little on the warm side, a little humid too. if you have plans this weekend, stay tuned to my forecast, especially if you're heading down toward the beaches. i'll have that forecast,

a rabid fox out on the streets in connecticut. they caught it on video. it happened friday outside an

apartment building. three guys were walking when the fox appeared to come out of nowhere. they say he snarled, bared his teeth, charged at them, grabbed their pant legs. one man threw a bottle at the fox, that eventually got him out of there. nobody was bitten, but that animal is still on the loose and obviously rabid. a new pill has been approved by the fda that allows your doctor to check on you without an office visit. here's how it works, it's a silicon sensor the size of a grain of sand. the food and drug administration approved it this week. once swallowed, stomach fluids power it long enough to send a signal through body tissue. that patch relays information about patients' heart rates and activity levels. also about the type of medication being taken and when it is ingested. wow. we've got sports coming up. we're going to hear from redskins park. and the

and welcome back, everybody. a very warm day out there. right now at 90 degrees at 6:00 at night, winds out of the east/southeast at 10 miles per hour. the number, though, is the heat index at 95. that's how it feels outside. it's going to be a very warm night. 85 right now in reston, and manassas coming in at 91 degrees. that heat index in low to mid-90s in many locations. watch your way making your way out, but things should begin to improve for the rest of the evening. radar showing a lot of thunderstorm activity in through southern maryland. one in calvert county and st. mary's county. but that's really about it. most of it is now dying out and will continue to do so as the sun goes down. high temperatures, rather low temperatures tonight, very warm in the city, about 77 here, 68 in leesburg, tomorrow back into the 90s. maybe 96 to 97 in d.c., 97 in

more on an impressive first day for this sensational teenager. >> reporter: can you imagine? you just wrapped up your freshman year of high school, you're swimming with the best swimmers in the world, and now you have a chance to win an olympic medal. that's exactly what's happened to bethesda's katie ledecky, the 800-meter freestyle preliminaries this morning dominated at least in her heat by katie. she won her heat, had the third best time, she advances to the finals which will be tomorrow evening here in london. after her prelims, i caught up with her pool side. >> i'm really happy with that swim. i was a little nervous, had a lot of adrenaline going into it. i may have taken it on a little bit fast. but hopefully that'll put me in a good position for tomorrow's finals. >> do the nerves help? and how long does that take to settle? >> i think, well, this is my first race, so just being here watching all the events sort of got me ready, and i think now the nerves are out and i'll be ready to go for tomorrow. >> what's the mind set for the next day? this is new, this is a first for

that was our temperature today, 97 tomorrow, 94 on your saturday, 30% chance of showers, don't let those ruin your plans, any showers that do develop will be out of your hair in about 20 to 30 minutes. you want to see a shower come over to help you cool off a little bit. >> out of your hair and after your hairdo's ruined. >> that's true. that's true. >> thanks, doug. finally tonight, a virginia man got the catch of his life. it wasn't easy, though, george was fishing near radford, virginia, this weekend when he felt a tug on his line. when he tried to reel it in, the fishing pole started to bend. eventually the fish was pulling him. he struggled for 30 minutes, grabbed the net, went into the water, the fish knocked him over. eventually, though, he persevered. he came out with his prize. check this out, a 43-pound carp. that is a fish. believe it or not this is not a record in virginia but wildlife officials say it's still a pretty big catch. he snapped his picture and let the fish back into the river.
