>> the nationwide affection outside chick-fil-a. >> good evening i'm jim vance. >> and i'm wendy rieger. a local phenom captured gold at the olympics and the hometown crowd goes wild. >> ledecky is a gold medalist. >> katie, katie. >> katie ledecky now the youngest person ever to win the 800 meter freestyle. >> dan hellie is in london with more on the swimming superstar. >> reporter: hey vance and wendy. what a night here. nine years ago the lek decky family joined the palisades pool in maryland. michael and his little brother katie wanted to join the swim team to make a few friends. now the friends will be asking to see katie's gold medal. >> 25 meters left for ledecky.

ledecky, 15 years old, is going to win olympic gold in the 800 free. the world record line creeps ahead of her but ledecky is a gold medalist with an american record. >> i felt great. i knew i had to calm down and that the crowd would be there for rebecca adlington. i just focused on my lane and my own race. i was a lot less nervous and very calm. >> reporter: he decky's time of 8:16.22 smashed a 23-year-old record held by janet evans and is the second fastest time in history. >> were you aware how fast you were swimming? >> i thought i was pretty fast since i was that far ahead. i thought at one point if this is close to the world record and i miss it i don't even care. i want to get my hand on the wall first. >> reporter: team usa's youngest

olympian was composed. but finally on the medal stand the magnitude of the moment hit her. >> i just remembered watching all the podium ceremonies when i was a little kid and seeing how inspiring those were and just being on that gold medal stand was just unbelievable and just a dream cool true. >> reporter: it was a dream for the entire ledecky family. they had to wait nearly three hours after the race to see their baby girl. >> we just can't believe it. i found out later she broke the american record by two seconds. >> one and a half. >> one and a half seconds. wow. couldn't believe it. >> reporter: what's next for the soon to be high school sophomore at stone ridge? >> i'm excited to go back home. i know it will be crazy at first but it will all go back to normal and i'll have a lot of fun. >> reporter: when will you go back to work? >> pretty soon. >> i'm excited to get back to

work though. >> reporter: her coach is flying to buffalo tomorrow because he has other swimmers there in a meet. needless to say he will be a popular guy at that meet in buffalo. she said one thing that pumped her up was michael phelps high fived her and said go get 'em katie. and the pro great britain crowd got her going. she channelled all that cheering for herself and it paid dividends. almost a world record for 15-year-old katie ledecky. what a blast it was hanging out with her family watching them bask in the glow of a gold medal for a 15-year-old young lady who will be a sophomore in high school next year. 200 of ledecky's classmates were cheering her on today. >> katie, katie, katie. >> that is 200 of ledecky's classmates cheering her on. they got together to watch a

to freedom of speech got a good airing. these woman participated in a same-sex kiss in. it was organized by gay rights groups to protest comments made by the chick-fil-a president suggesting that gay marriage is against god's will. they opposed the donations to anti-gay marriage groups. >> it affects our equality and our rights that we can't get married as everybody else does. >> reporter: free speech was on the minds of these patrons. >> this is america. you can be whoever you want to be and say what you want to say. all these people do is give money to a church and people are -- same with wal-mart. there is no hate here. >> do you want anything to drink? >> reporter: the franchise owner came out and said they were welcome to stay. >> just what we normally do every day. so it doesn't matter who you are

showers and thunderstorms. we're not just watching one tropical system. now it's two. >> thanks, doug. a developing story out of the plain states. wildfires have forced dozens of people from their homes near oklahoma city. 25 buildings have burned. drought, temperatures of 110 degrees and high winds are fanning the flames. police believe the fires may have been intentionally set. witnesses saw people throwing burning newspapers out of the window of a truck. no reports of any injuries. a northern virginia teenager vanished ten years ago and her body was found near redskins park but her killer has never been found. we tell you how her family and friends are keeping her memory. >> stress, hurt and pain. >> reporter: the parents of erica smith have waited ten long

years for their daughter's killer to be found. >> every day is a struggle. >> reporter: the rising high school freshman disappeared in 2002. she was on her way to visit a friend. her body discovered 11 days later along broad creek run in ashburn. >> this is an animal. i feel that this is a monster. what he's done is very, very cold-blooded. >> reporter: a vigil was held friday night at crossroads united methodist church in ashburn. >> erica was a good-spirited person. she loved everybody and everything. >> reporter: friends and relatives held a moment of silence. >> not a day goes by i don't think about erica. >> reporter: authorities announced that a possible suspect had been identified in this case. but to this point there has been no arrest made. erica's parents have not given up hope that her killer one day will be captured.

>> we believe that law enforcement will get this individual and we believe they're going to bring him in. >> i pray to god whoever is responsible for doing this to our daughter is caught and put in jail for a long, long time. >> reporter: darcy spencer, news4. a former lacrosse player convicted of murder wants his sentencing pushed back to october. he is facing 20 years in prison. he is due back in court later this month. but his lawyers want delay. they claim that the prosecutors never told them that love's family plans to sue. they are asking more time to consider an argument. the orioles legend cal ripken jr. has broken his silence about his mother's kidnapping. police are trying to find the man who surprised his mon, tied her up and drove her around for almost 24 hours.

ripken is saying that his mother is trying to get back to a normal routine since that ordeal. she is still shaken and so is he. >> it was the worst feeling you can imagine. i actually physically got in the car and drove around. it's like finding a needle in the hay stack but i felt lie i was doing something. >> violet ripken is 74 years old and lives in aberdeen. police released the video of the suspect. there is reason to believe that the kidnapping was planned but he doesn't know why his mother was a target. the ncaa is telling joe paterno's family not to bother filing an appeal of those sanctions that were handed down against penn state. the organization levied those sanctions after a report found that the university covered up child sex abuse allegations against former assistant coach jerry sandusky.

the family argued there was no regard for due process but the ncaa says the sanctions are not subject to appeal. two girls in maryland are reaching out to help a child who lost his family in a murder-suicide. they are donating money from their lemonade stand to 12-year-old frank hayward iii. neighbors they say that raised $400 in a couple days. the child is in critical condition after police say his father stabbed him in their home on tuesday. his father also shot and killed his mother and two-year-old sister before he killed himself. up next, an act of revenge leaves an entire town without a working police car. a wild animal on the prowl and it has local pet owners on edge. plus michael phelps going out in style. and virginia's golden girl gabby douglas making a debut in a douglas i got the chancen a to start my own business.

a sheriff's parking lot looks more like a wreckage from a monster truck rally. deputies in derby, vermont say a man angry about a drug arrest crushed six of their vehicles. the paper claims he used a tractor. deputies tried to stop him but couldn't do anything about it because they couldn't chase after them. police in a neighboring city had to be called in to arrest him. the judge ordered him held on

$50,000 bail. people in fairfax city are told to watch out for coyotes. a labrador retriever was attacked by three coyotes this morning. the owner was playing fetch with her pet when it happened. it is rare for coyotes to attack humans but they are saying to keep their animals on a leash. >> we don't want people to think it is unsafe due to the coyotes. it's more than likely an isolated incident when the dog might have come across them. >> coyotes are more likely to be out at night and hide in holes during the day. let's head back to the games in london, shall we and relish the gold rush that is team usa. it is a great end to the week for our home team especially in the pool. michael phelps swimming his last individual olympic race today.

phelps took home another gold in the 100 meter butterfly. he has 17 gold medals throughout his career. he goes for one more in the 4x100 medley relay. is it a race where the americans are heavily favored. >> this time it's going to be a world record for missy franklin. >> missy franklin took home another gold medal in the 200 meter backstroke. her third gold and fourth medal overall in the london olympics and sed a new world record just over 2:04. it's the seventh world record set in london. the u.s. is dominating in the pool with 14 gold medals and 28 medals overall. fresh off her performance, gabby douglas received another honor. she will grace the corn flakes box. the special edition corn flakes

there. we'll see a dry night today and we'll start off dry but see a good chance of showers and thunderstorms developing. we do have an upper level system that will try to rotate toward the area. not a lot of movement with these storms. any storms that develop could produce locally heavy downpours. sunday is a better chance for severe weather. also watching the tropics. this is tropical storm ernesto. and a tropical depression way across the atlantic. we will watch that one. and another little one in portions of florida. florida get wet but it should not become a depression. ernesto is all alone right now. winds at 50 miles an hour moving to the west at 18 miles an hour. it will come close to jamaica and potentially move into the

gulf of mexico as a hurricane with winds of 75 miles an hour. that is the forecast from the national hurricane center. if you have interests in the gulf you want to watch out for ernesto. the chances for thunderstorms tomorrow are 40 to 50%. be the highs will be where they were today. sunday rather breezy conditions, winds up to 20 to 30 miles an hour and a good chance, i think for not only thunderstorms but for some strong thunderstorms out there. we'll watch those for you on news4. tomorrow morning partly cloudy, 68 to 75 degrees. we're talking about the heat through the day on sunday with a high of 95. the front moves through and we have a good chance of rain on monday with a high of 88. and back into the 90s on the end of next week. so a couple of really hot days in there and one warm. >> not so bad. we have sports coming up

space, traveling more than 350 million miles, nasa's rover named curiosity is closing in on the red planet. in what some say the most difficult landing in the space agency, in seven minutes the rover will travel through the atmosphere to the surface of mars. if all goes as planned the curiosity rover lands just after 1:30 on monday morning. there you go. >> that will be fascinating. >> it will take soil and air and everything else. and it can get pictures back to us in 14 minutes. that's faster than your phone. >> searching for signs of life. should be interesting. that's our broadcast for now.
