it's a week of dominance at the pool for team usa, but this morning, there is a new golden girl. >> that's right. we have a very new hometown hero talking about 15-year-old katy ledecky, coa d katie ledecky. >> she's the youngest person to ever win the race and dan hellie has more on her incredible performance. >> 25 meters left for lad eke. forget it about. ledecky will win olympic gold in the 800 free. world record line creeps ahead of her. ledecky, a gold medalist. >> i felt great. i knew i had to calm down and the crowd would be there for rebecca allington, and i just focused on my own lane, my own race and really paid off.

expect another very hot day today. heat index, 100 degrees or higher, starting about lunchtime, going up through 5:00, 6:00 this afternoon. talk about more storm chances, which may include severe weather chances for your sunday. coming up in a few minutes. back to the news. university of maryland police are looking for a person they say fired a gun near campus. officers arrested two other people just before 1:00 this morning, but they say the third person got away. police have not said what led to the shots fired or whether anyone was hurt. they also have not released a description of the gunman, still on the loose. three people in the hospital after a bad crash in prince georges county. that crash happened around 10:30 around marlboro ridge road. three people were pulled unconscious from the cars and they are working to get cars from the wooded area. all injuries are serious, but non-life-threatening. no word on what led to that crash. a shooting at a prince

william county motel landed at least one person in the hospital. an argument between two men at the motel eight on new market court in manassas when one man shot the other. the victim taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. so far, no arrests made in the case. decision 2012. july jobs report, a case of good news/bad news. the economy added 163,000 new jobs, higher number than expected. but unemployment ticked up to 8.3%.bama and mitt romney tried to spin the numbers to their advantage. >> another harm blow to the struggling middle class families of america. the president has not had policies that put american families back to work. >> we have too many folks out there looking for work. we've got more work to do on their behalf. >> analysts say the added jobs are positive for the economy, but unemployment rate is causing businesses and consumers to become more pessimistic about a

possible recovery. one of hollywood's most accomplished actors made romney's day with an endorsement. clint eastwood announced he's backing the republican nominee. he says the economy needs a boost and romney is the man to do it. he attended a romney fund-raiser last night in idaho. president obama is taking the weekend off from campaigning to celebrate his birthday today. the commander in chief turns 51. he will enjoy a late birthday celebration next weekend in chicago. another big sports event going on in our area. redskins holding annual fan appreciation day today at training camp. derek ward live at ashburn with today's festivities. >> hey, this is always a day for redskins fans and a chance for the team to say thank you to those who follow them through thick and thin. certainly seen a lot of thin, hoping for some thick this year. last year's camp, a record number of people showed up.

today is child victim awareness day. the family of a teen murdered ten years ago will spend the day helping other parents helping to better protect their own children. 14-year-old erica smith found murdered in ashburn being virginia, in 2002. her killer has never been found. family and friends gather for a vigil in her memory. erica's family has have not given up hope the killer will someday be caught. >> pray toy god that whoever is responsible to doing this to our daughter is caught and put in jail for a long, long time. >> this is an animal. i feel that this is a monster.

what he's done is -- is very, very cold blooded. >> police announced last year that they had identified a potential suspect in the case. but they have not made an arrest. people in fairfax are being told to keep an eye out for coyotes in the area. the warning comes after three coyotes attacked a dog while it was playing with its owner on a trail at daniels run park yesterday. police say while people should be careful at night, coyote attacks are not common. they advise residents make sure pets are inside at night but they also say homeowners should secure their trash as the coyotes are looking for an easy meal. it is still summer, but now is a great time to save some money on school supplies. this weekend is virginia's tax free shopping weekend for school supplies. most items under $20 like pens, paper, binders and backpacks are included. you won't pay tax on clothes and shoes under $100.

the discount is drawing parents from d.c. and maryland to virginia. some maryland students will be stocking up for school with the help of a cop. believe it or not, calvert county sheriff, maryland state police, prince georges county police are taking part. they will be picked up, they will go bowling and then buy clothes and school supplies at walmart and then afterward get haircuts and lunch at outback. the students were selected by school counselors. >> a nice deal. time is 8:13. we've seen virginia's golden girl, gabby douglas top the competition in london. but wait until you see my skills. see me tumble and on the rings, pommel horse, balance beam, we tried it all. it's coming up next. db rncdvr, folks.

nasa is counting down the hours to one of its most anticipated landings in years. the curiosity rover will touch down on the surface of mars early monday morning. the rover will study rock and soil to determine if conditions have been favorable for life now. or in the past. nasa says 2. $5 billion mission is crucial to consider when we'll be able to land. any clues when it will happen? >> not in my time. a long way to fly and a very small capsule. would you be up in that thing

and then is a good deal. men's gymnastics team still has a shot at gold in the individual finals this weekend. >> cooling off with the pommel horse or paralegal bar routine, not as easy as it looks. i found that out first hand. gymnastics one of the most watched events of the summer games. the women's team holds gold now, gabby douglas beat out the world's best, danell leyva took the bronze in the men's all around. the coach tatiana perskaya coaches some of the best in the sport. take a look at capital gymnastics in virginia. a 10-year-old who can pull off i seemingly effortless vault. a teen with amazing agility on uneven bars. and those who can flip and tumble without breaking a sweat. >> that's better. >> but then there's me.

>> we support each other, and mom by and large a tough, strong woman. able to endure this. she's doing pretty good. >> a billboard up with a sketch of a potential suspect. they've asked anyone with information on this kidnapping to contact them immediately. cuba gooding jr. will not face charges in connection to an altercation that he had at a new orleans bar. misdemeanor battery charges dropped against the oscar-winning actor. last week, a bar employees accused gooding of shoving her. she claims she was trying to calm him down after other customers wanted him to pose for pictures. yesterday's move, not much of a surprise. the employee said she didn't want to press charges in the case. one of maryland's oldest prisons will soon be no more. inmates tearing down the maryland house of corrections in

jessup. governor martin o'malley ordered it shut down after two corrections officers stabbed and one died. prison officials say inmates taking aparting the facility are learning some valuable skills like asbestos abatement. they say the demolition is saving taxpayers millions of dollars. today, the national mall will be packed with families looking to make a statement. hundreds, if not thousands of moms are expected to gather at the mall to raise awareness to breast feeding in public. moms and their little ones will take part in the great nurse-in as it's called. organizers hope this helps remove the social stigma of nursing in public. they want mothers to know their rights and laws in d.c., maryland and virginia. the event goes from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and part of world breast feeding week. the chick-fil-a debate inspires strong opinion on both sides. days after thousands showed

the famous red telephone booths. they are now mostly obsolete are becoming more broken down and necessity xwlekt negligented. so he and his team clean them up, turn them into showers, mini bars and even offices. >> i see myself as just having been elected to restore these things, if that makes sense. i've been privileged to restore over 400 key kiosks now. i'll keep doing it until i go to the big phone box in the sky. >> most people want the phone booths to be restored completely. even with a working phone. take a shower and be on the phone. >> don't know about all of that. speaking of showers today. >> yeah, 30% chance. >> are you go ahead? need another bite? >> this barbecue slider is very good indeed. that smoked cheddar in there?
