the d.c. area failed to win a bid for the 2012 olympics. ten years later, there is new talk tonight to get the 2024 games to our nation's capital. bethesda's golden girl, katie ledecky is on her way home tonight. a local equestrian champion was hoping to make it to london before she suffered a stroke. now she's back in the saddle and on a mission. the 2012 olympic games are bringing attention, excitement, so now leaders in our area are at least considering another push to host the game.

couple days ago, has been all over our nbc air waves. this morning she went on the "today" and matt lauer actually has a special connection. having gone to high school with katie ease uncle john, i actually was traveling this weekend, went to parys with my family. friday night i pick up my phone, rus rushing back to the hotel to see it, i clearly missed t. and i look and it says katie won gold, she shocked the world. that was great. i felt like in some ways i was a little removed family, and i called her uncle, and this was 40 minutes after the race, and when he answered the phone, all i could hear was screaming in the background. they hadn't even seen her. i thought it was incredibly emotional and fun. >> so i gettist finally in. what's been the craziest part for you. >> just celebrating, just not ge getting too much sleep right

big chunk of this community sh should be here waiting for her. did we mention the fact she is o only 15 years old and the younge member of team usa to be an olympian, a gold medalist, you can only imagine the homecoming celebration in store for this young lady. of course we will be here waiting for her, and we will catch that moment on camera. much more on that, so stay with us on news4. we're live at the dulles na national airport. erica gonzalez. and a doping -- we will be going live to london in about ten minutes to hear about it. lots of clouds, but that does not stop us from reaching 90 degrees again. doug kammerer joins us. >> we're at 91 degrees out there, with partly cloudy skies at at about 5 miles an hour, but 91, a lot of cloud cover early, and those clouds did give away to to some sunshine. temperatures out there around the rest of the region into the

upper 80s for the most part. temperatures have been held down a bit for some of us, but still warm and humid. we do have a couple showers out there, mostly down to the south and southwest. so a few down toward the cu culpepper area. we'll talk more about those sh showers coming our way, plus the latest on our tropical storm out there. in in a minute. a gas leak for several st stories and movie theater to be evacuated today near the capital center in largo, about 3:30 everyone at the magic johnson theater was told to leave. the cause is not known at this point. >> a teen drove an suv into th this house. it happened here along miller road in oakton, new jersey. the driver suffered a medical emergency behind the wheel. he's expected to be okay.

there's no serious damage. it didn't take police long to make the arrest in the murder of a -- darcy spencer is live at police headquarters with the latest. >> reporter: there have been a lo lot of developments in this investigation throughout the day. police early on thought this was an attempted robbery over some tennis shoes. they're backing away from that, bu but they still believe it was an attempted robbery that led to t the shooting. as you mentioned, a suspect is in in custody. he's 18-year-old dare sales, charged with second-degree murder. he lives in fort washington. the victim has been identified as an tloin boatwright. temple hills believe the suspect an and the victim apparently did not know one another. they had a chance encounter there in the 5000 block of temple hill road, a fight broke out and the suspect pulled a gun. > >> around 2:15 this morning, i

heard a gunshot. i really thought it was just a car backfiring or something. i didn't pay any more attention. >> very rare we hearing about anyone getting shot or murdered or killed in this area. it appeared these two individuals had a verbal eight kay. during that verbal altercation. >> reporter: there are indications that the suspect was rating with police. we're told he went back to the scene with detectives, basically showing them around the area, where this incident happened, and police have recovered a gun in this case, but again the suspect has been charged with second-degree murder, being held without bond. new details today about the gun mane in that deadly shooting

inside a sikh temping. at the shooter was today identified. michael page was a former member of the u.s. army, discharged back in 1998, and is described by a civil rights group as a frustrated neonazi. nbc's charlie weo. >> reporter: he's been identified as wade michael page. he received a less than honorable discharge. police say he came to the temple with one handgun and multiple clips of ammunition. he killed six people before he was killed himself. also injured was a police officer, who is in critical condition. he was an officer responding to one of the people down. he was ambushed by page, then shot by other officers arriving on the scene. right now there is no motive for

these killings, but police are investigating this as a case of domestic terrorism. page has a number of links to skinhead and white supremacist organizations, and the fbi and atf say they are following up on that. the sikh community very shaken here, but they say their faith has not been diminished. they actually say they see this as an opportunity. they say they don't want to be considered wearing tiss ining t terrorists, but they want to be known as your neighbor next door, the doctor, the educated person. that's what they're trying to get across. there was a search the page's home in nearby cud ahi, wisconsin. the investigation is headed up by the fbi, the atf and oak creek police. there is more information developing, especially about mr. page's background. reporting from wisconsin, back to you. stay with news4 for more.

also the rain, down around roanoke, richmond, a lot of rain down there, thunderstorm activity, that is with that boundary that's shifted down to the south. that's where the boundary is going to remain. ernesto flared up a bit and did produce an eye a bit. a strong topical storm, that will put it in towards mexico and around belize, and then back into the open waters of the gulf of mexico. nowhere near our area. it's expected to become a hurricane, but not expect to do produce any disruptions for the united states. high pressure just to the north of this front, so we're waiting to get into that area, but this boundary doesn't move a lot. a lot of thunderstorms on that boundary. even tomorrow we have a slight

chance of shower or thunderstorm. best chance down around fred ricks berg. and then southern maryland does have a fairly good chance of seeing some rain tomorrow, but north of washington, i don't think we'll see much of rain at all. that one could set off a pretty good number of storms during the day. partly cloudy with an extra t in there, just because. warming temperatures as we move on through the morning tomorrow. warm and humid, 65 to 75 degrees tomorrow afternoon, partly sun,showers possible, the best chance will be to the south. and then we move back up. 91 tomorrow, 93 on your wednesday. 93 on thursday. then industry could be a day

look at virginia beach. and there are numb lulls showers and storms well to our south, down around richmond and virginia beach. that's the same front that helped to cool us over. today we're at 91. we are saying 91, hmm, i could take that. and firefighter suffered minor injuries this morning battling a blaze. that's near brinkly road in camp springs. the building was badly damaged. emergenciry crews in prince george's county are under fire over the time it takes to respond to trouble. their performance is getting worse instead of better. chris gordon joins us with more. >> reporter: good evening. prince george's county wants emergency calls to be answered or picked up within one minute

or left. we're live from the riverdale heights volunteer department, because according to county records, it missed nearly one third of the emergency calls made here. the riverdale heights station is staffed by career firefighters were reassigned by a prior administration. at capitol heights station, four professional firefighters are on duty during the day, but volunteers staff nights and weekends. prince george's officials are reviewing a county stat report that evil ways whether answers to calls within one minute, if not it was recorded as a missed call. it failed to respond to 31% of the emergency calls. capitol heights 30% of the time. bluffed heights station 22%. in all six stations failed to respond to emergency calls at

what is considered an alarming rate. barry stanton is the county's deputy chief administrative officer. >> it's obvious we have to look at a couple issues, do we want to increase staffing? do we want to look at the need for more volunteers working in these areas? and recruitment and training. >> reporter: the fire chief says they are trying to recruit more volunteers and hire more professional firefighters. >> should the public be concerned? >> no, prince george's county has one of the best systems in the area, we are the largest combination career/volunteer department in the united states. over 130,000 calls a year, we answer every one of them. we have never not answered a call and always will. >> the union that represents professional firefighters says understaffing has been a problem, but new hiring would make things safer for the public and for firefighters.

what an olympic weekend for the williams sisters. they overjames a tough challenge to win the dumb gold. you this now the third gold for each. first venus, she and serena took the gold in the sydney and beijing games. she has also won five wimbledon titles and two u.s. open titles. . ser reara stomped maria share positive aa. 600, 6-1, her serve was on fire. with that add an encore dan ser reara is only the second woman after steffi graf to complete the golden slam.

show tomorrow morning with lovely fluffy hair and no dandruff i'll bet. we've seen a lot of olympians with dreams fulfilled and shattered. doreen gentzler has the story of a woman who was an 0e78 hopeful. >> jan had been an alternate gnat, so with the 2012 games fast approaching, she knew she had a real chance to make the team. what she didn't realize is getting there was going to be harder than she ever could have imagined. >> i was at the second to the last jump. i made a mistake, and the horse misread the jump and hit it. we both fell. >> reporter: you can hear it in her voice. the fateful fall was more than a mishappened. what she thought at first was a simple broken away turned out to be much worse.

>> all of a sudden i couldn't talk. they knew right away that something was going on. >> seven hours later she was having a stroke. >> she landed in a way that caused her neck to become stretched. that cause add tear in the carotid artery that leads from the chest to the brain. >> blood clots formed in the torn artery, traveled to her brain, causing a stroke in an area that controls language and moved on the right side of the body. it left her unable to walk and talk. doctors said her prognosis was grim. >> they said your whole life will be different from now on. my brother said, jen, you might not ever ride again. and i'm like, what do you mean, rite against? of course i'm going to ride again. >> now barely 18 months later she's back in the salts. she took that same determine thags, and used it for her

recovery. medstar national rehabilitation hospital dr. alexander dromerics worked on her rehab. >> honestly i was not expecting she would return to this level of competition, but you know? she's a pretty tough, determined woman. >> reporter: her road to recovery wasn't easy by any stretch. >> my mind goes much quicker than my mouth, so you have to make sure i take my time. >> reporter: and rebuilding enough strength to ride and jump with her horse. she's now at the same level she was before, even competing in the 2012 olympic trials. they doesn't make the team this tike, but she's not giving up. >> my hopes for the future is to continue competing at the international level. i'm not done yet. i can tell you that. >> one of so many inspiring

it was a rough morning for many riders who use the dupont circle station. >> pat lawson muse tells us what happened with the escalators. >> reporter: passengers xwo use the dupont circle station can only use this entrance here at 20th and q, because the other entrance is temporarily closed. it's 130 feet underground, so which the escalators break, it's a big problem. just after 7:30 in the mid of the morning run, one stopped working, then another, prompting metro to shut the entire tailing down. >> it was closed just over an hour where customers were redirected to fair gut north, about a five block walk south of here.
