and good evening, welcome to news 4 at 5:00. >> first up, we begin with breaking news. a man is under arrest for sexually assaulting two young girls. >> we have a reporter in lieu isdale at the west park playground. >> reporter: this is very upsetting. they just wrapped up a news conference moments ago. the sus summing amoba confessed to kidnapping an 8-year-old girl nearly a month ago and attempting to sexually assault her. let me move out othe way right here. they also say he also confessed to sexually assaulting a 6-year-old child at this playground by the swings over there in lieu ewisdale. he is at the mobile village that is near the playground. it's in hiyattsville. he kidnapped the child. how did he do it? he offered her a toy. he was really nice to her.

and they walked out of the store to the playground. now police were called. that girl's father obviously frantically looking for her. well here's the deal. a prince george's county officer was driving around the area and found the suspect walking with the child at the playground. the officer separated him from the child and then backup units arrested him. >> she seemed very desperate and the only thing coming out of her mouth is i want my daddy. i want my daddy. the only thing i can think of that point was she doesn't have her daddy but she has me which is the next person in charge out here in the streets. >> reporter: now police reunited the girl with her father at the park. officer cashrel found them around the area you're looking over there, relatively near the basketball courts. tonight the suspect is in custody, in jail. and authorities question him and they say he admitted to kidnapping the 8-year-old girl from the same village on july 9th. okay, july 9th. yesterday was around august.

what's taken so long? well, police say they were actively investigating and they say that they were working that particular case. now coming up at 6:00, the father of the 6-year-old girl actually wrote a letter. he doesn't want to talk on camera. he wrote a letter thanking the prince george's county police and has more information to tell you all, parents out there coming up at 6:00. live here in lewisdale, news 4. >> a scene described by riders as utter chaos. metro is investigating an escalator accident that ended with five people injured. >> this happened at 8:30 this morning. chris gordon reports on what happened. >> reporter: ambulances took three injured people to the hospital. two others were treated on the scene. the escalator accident happened just before 8:30 a.m. metro says a passenger's bag or garment was caught in the side of the escalator which caused her and others to lose their balance and fall. you can see a section of metal ten feet or so in length that

was apatiently pulled from the base of the escalator. she was riding a parallel escalator as the accident happened. she took pictures with her cell phone and later told us about it. >> i was heading up stairs on the escalator. i heard a very loud screeching noise seeming to come from one of the escalators going downward. i noticed a few people were screaming. there were a lot of people running upward and running downward on that particular escalator. it came to an abrupt halt. there was a lady. she had fallen at the bottom. she appeared to be injured. i believe her leg was cut. there was bleeding. and it took a couple minutes before metro employee arrived at the scene. >> reporter: metro is investigating. transit police took picturesst metal strip laying on the escalator steps. we spoke with passengers riding me metro after the accident. >> it's terrible. i had a girlfriend fall down metro one time. it's horrible. i hope they'll be okay.

>> i think it's sad that it happened. metro could do a little better as far as fixing stuff and making it safer. >> reporter: now the escalator where the accident occurred is not this one behind me at street level but underground from the mid level platform running down to the orange line. it remains out of service at this hour pending the investigation and safety inspection. that's the latest live from the la fant plaza station. chris gordon, news 4. the neighbors are in shock after a grounds keeper finds two bodies in an apartment complex this morning. we have more on the victims and the investigation. pat? >> reporter: wendy, the bodies of two men were discovered in that apartment building shortly after 10:00 this morning. at this hour police are still on the scene investigating. the bodies we believe are still inside that bulgd. police aren't saying how the men died. they're only calling their deaths at this point suspicious.

it's been a day of grief and gut wrenching emotion here in the 1900 block of north culpepper street. throughout the day, family, friends and neighbors gathered in the street and con sosoled e other after hearing the news. >> two bodies were found in the front living room area of the residence. there was blood discovered on the scene. we're continuing an investigation at this time. >> no weapon found? >> no, ma'am. >> reporter: any witnesses? >> not at this time. >> the men are carl moton of no fixed address an 59-year-old keith sprigs who rented at apartment. police say they knew each other. police aren't calling their deaths homicides but they are calling the case suspicious. >> we are trying to figure out the cause and nature of the deaths. we don't have 100% confirmation on how they did die. >> reporter: the deaths sent shock waves through this tightly knit community. everybody knows each other and many are related.

>> we all grew up together. we all went to school together. it's just unbelievable. you know, i don't understand how it even happened. >> reporter: hyde view park is a community in transition. there are newer homes and residence and older homes and residence who say there is very little crime here. >> it's been peaceful and quiet number heavy violence, no gun shooting or nothing like that. so no crimes like that have been up this way in a while. a long time. >> reporter: you are surprised this happened? >> definitely. definitely. yeah. you never expect something like that to happen up this way. >> reporter: police are not saying whether there was alcohol or drugs involved. this appears to be an isolated case. they stla is no indication that anyone else in the neighborhood is in any danger. again, they're not calling this a homicide case. we can tell that you there have been only two homicides in arlington county in the past two years. both of those happened in the past month. reporting live in arlington, pat law son-mousse.

>>. a maryland woman faces charges for allegedly band onning her 2-month-old baby at a church. patricia finch miller left her baby at the steps at grace point on monday. the child was found by the church's youth director. >> very unexpected. but i'm just so thankful to god that i was there because normally there would be no one there. and most weeks out of the year someone drops a baby off in the morning on a monday, nobody's going to get there until tuesday and it will probably be too late. >> the infant was okay. the mother was later found in fredericksburg with two children, other children. they are not in dafrpg. she faces charges tonight because maryland's safe hafven law applies to children 10 days old and younger. >> a pedestrians was struck today near the intersection with fairfax county parkway. this is around 7:00 this morning. that shut down the eastbound

lanes. traffic was diverted to route 28. the injured pedestrians was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries. traffic backed up for miles while police investigated. construction began today on the new express lanes along i-95 in virginia. the 30 mile stretch of road promises to eliminate one of the worst traffic bottle necks in this region. megan mcgrath was in dale city when crews broke ground. at the horner road commuter lot, there is much interest in the new hov hot lane project. some think the express lanes will ease congestion. >> wouldn't trade it for anything. >> but others are skeptical. >> they're not going to build any more bridges or roads in the district. so what you are going to do? it's going to bottle neck further. >> reporter: whether you like them or not, express lanes are coming to the virginia i-95 corridor. this morning governor bob mcdonald joined transportation officials in breaking ground on the project.

>> our citizens have a great affinity for the automobile. and because people go a lot of different directions not all of them go into d.c., people go all around this great economic hub here in northern virginia, and so they have to use the automobile. they use it by themselves. and so this new project will help. >> reporter: when finished, the express lanes will span 30 miles from garrisonville road in stafford county to edsall road in fairfax county. a sort of hybrid hov hot lane system, the express lanes will be free for vehicles with three or more people. if you have less than three in the car, you have to pay a toll. some loyal slug line commuters think it's a great idea. >> can't beat this. it's fast and free. >> reporter: others wonder about the environmental impact. >> it's about the environment. you're placing more cars on the road which was i thought the purpose, one of the purposes for having an hov lane is to lessen the number of cars that are on the road. so you're going to get that as

well as with the increase of construction. but at the end i'm sure there's a benefit. >> reporter: the compress lanes fro pro jekt project is expected to cost $295 million. they should be able to use the lanes in 2014. >> another summer day in the 90s f you're keeping count out there, so far we hit 90 42 time this summer. we'll let you know if there is more in store. >> i think we'll see it during the day tomorrow and throughout end of the week. something else we're going to see is rain chances on the increase. take a look out there. 85 degrees out at the airport. we have cooled a little bit down toward the airport. some rain right now around the airport. winds out of the southeast right now at 12 miles per hour. temperatures around the rest of the region, 88. 82 in laplata. look at pachl river. only 81 degrees there. we have numerous showers and storms into southern maryland. this is st. mary's county and also right around the district

down towards southeast and across the river in towards the airport area around alexandria. a few showers continuing around that area, too. i'll let you know when we see the best chance for not only storms but strong storms. i'll have that for you. >> the faa is suspending a procedure at airports nationwide. after a close call in the skies here in our area. air traffic controllers are banned from using a traffic reversing par 4 that allows planes to take off and land opposite of the normal flow of traffic. last week two outbound usair ways flights came close to an inbound flight at reagan national. they were redirected for the weather. the faa expects to have a new policy in place next month. a former university of maryland student who threatened to go on a shooting rampage pleaded guilty in court today. sentencing will be set at a later date under the plea deal alexander song will perform 200 hours of community service and be monitored by maryland's

mental health court. he could face more than three years in jail and several years of probation. song now has a court mandated ke curfew of 9:00 p.m. the healing process continues tonight in the wake of the sikh temple shooting in wisconsin. a shooting carried out by an parent white power extremist. tonight the guru center in rockville will hold a candlelight vigil at 8:00. last night hundreds turned out in a milwaukee suburb to mourn the victims. wade michael page killed six people and wounded several others before police killed him. page was a known skinhead and a member of a neonazi band. the suspect in last year's mass shooting in tucson, arizona, will not face the death penalty. today jared loughner sold a judge he's of clear mind and understands the charges against him. he pleaded guilty to killing six people and wounding 13 others including former arizona

congresswoman gabby giffords. loughner will serve a life sentence in federal prison without the possibility of parole. a possible copycat in the colorado movie massacre was stopped in ohio. police say scott smith went to a theater on saturday night to see "the dark knight" and a manager and off duty cop searched him finding a loaded .9 millimeter handgun, two loaded magazines and three knives. then detectives searched smith's car. they found a tactical vest. he is now behind bars on gun charges. police say smith never made any threats and never spoke about killing anyone. there is a nationwide effort to take back the streets tonight. it is the 29th annual national night out. the crime and drug prevention event includes cookouts and athletic events. it is being held in more than 15,000 communities across the country. most of them are starting at 6:00. turn to the race for the white house.

mitt romney opened a new attack today on the president, accusing him of lowering work requirements for people on welfare. romney released a new ad praising president clinton's welfare to work reform passed back in 1996. he says president obama gutted that program. the white house is fighting back tonight calling romney's claims complete lies. >> i hope you understand that president obama in the last few days has tried to reverse that accomplishment by taking the work requirement out of welfare. that is wrong if i'm president i'll put work back in welfare. >> let me say that this advertisement is categorically false and it is blatantly dishonest. >> the white house also says mitt romney supported removing work requirements and welfare when he was the governor of massachusetts. across the pond today, the olympics proved to be a good day for two, maybe three u.s. women's teams. >> the games overall are also

olympics are proving to be a very hot ticket. opening ceremony attracted a global audience of 900 million people. here in britain, more people watched opening night than viewed the recent royal wedding. >> the london 2012 broadcast will reach viewers in more countries than ever before with an estimated global reach of 4.8 billion across every country of the world. >> reporter: british try athlete brownly played to that audience today. so dominant in victory that he actually stopped at the finish line to savor the moment. and a moment to forget for hurdler liu, the first gold medal in any event track. in an echo of what happened at the beijing olympics, liu pulled up injured in the men's hurdles. afterward his fellow competitors helped him off the track anguished softened by a moment of olympic brotherhood. this is the u.s. medal stand shoe. it is the fly net racer.

i'm planning on dining el fresco tonight zbluchlt may want to bring an umbrella with you. we have showers out there right now. right now where the thundershowers are going on in st. mary's county and one little shower right over the airport right now. you can see the dark clouds surrounding the washington, d.c. metro area right now. temperatures have actually fallen over the last hour or two as a result of the clouds. temperatures right now sitting at 85 degrees. yes, we do have light rain out around the airport. winds right now in the southeast at 12 miles per hour. here's the current temperatures around the region. 86 in winchester. 8 85 in mart inzburg. so temperatures down a little bit from where they have been. the humidity is still way up there. still very warm and humid. here's where the showers are. most of them all day long have stayed well south and east of washington. most of southern maryland. but these storms have been producing very heavy rains down around st. marriyor mary's coune

these storms this is the last hour, they're not moving a whole lot. once again, you can expect to see a lot of rain out of these and st. mary's, southern calvert county. watch out here. you'll continue to see that rain. once again, you could run into flooded roadways. here's this one shower i was talking about. actually, no, we're fine. now you're fine. that shower gone. that's how fast these showers do pulse up and then pulse down. i wouldn't be surprised to see a few more making their way in and around the area. high pressure over our area down to the south. that's where that boundary is. that's where the storms have been. that boundary will slide just slightly to the north tomorrow. so a little bit better chance of storms tomorrow. once again, same location. talking about southern maryland, areas south of washington around the fredericksburg area, maybe around quantico and then farther to the south around richmond. as far as thursday is concerned, we're watching a frontal boundary make its way down here. thursday, a much better chance for severe weather. a little bit more widely

scattered friday. everybody gets in on the action. and friday we could see some severe weather, too. so we're going to switch this around from heat that we've seen over the past couple days to the thunderstorm chances we'll see by the end of the week. this evening, mostly cloudy. warm and humid. isolated storms once again. mostly to the south. temperatures 79 to about 85 degrees. good idea to take the umbrella with you. pretty much no matter where you are from wash wington down southward. you can't rule out some rain to the south again even tomorrow morning. but then a better chance tomorrow afternoon. partly sunny. very warm and humid. isolated storms. temperatures 88 to about 93 degrees. those winds out of the south at about 5 to 10. here is the next couple of days. 93 tomorrow. 93 on thursday. still 90 on friday. then the storms move in. once again, some of those could be strong, maybe severe and they may last into saturday. the severe threat moves away on saturday. still a chance for rain. but some cooler weather,

i know what it's like to hire people and to make ends meet. from those experiences, i had the chance of running the olympics. the games were in real trouble. there'd been way too much spending. and in massachusetts i found a budget that was badly out of balance. our legislature was 85% democrat. and every one of the four years i was governor, we balanced the budget. i want to use those experiences to help americans have a better future. we believe in our future. we believe in ourselves. we believe the greatest days of america are ahead. i'm mitt romney and i approve this message.

. fast forward through the headlines. police arrested this man for abducting two judge girls and sexually assaulting them. charles omofa confessed to the crimes and happened on a playground on university boulevard in lewisdale. one girl was 8, the other 6. neighbors and family members in shock after the loss of two men found dead in an apartment complex on north culpepper street this morning. police haven't identified or determined how 59-year-old keith sprigs and 31-year-old carl motin died. they're calling the deaths suspicious. metro is investigating after an accident on the escalator at la fant plaza injured five people. it happened around 8:30 this morning. the focus is on a metal strip at the base of the escalator. officials tell us a passenger's bag or garment became stuck on it and that caused her and others to lose their balance and fall. now let's fast forward to the

weather. doug? >> watching a few showers and thunderstorms. down to the south and southern st. mary's county. we'll take you down there. we zoom on in here on storm 4 doppler radar. you can see where the storms r once again right down into southern st. mary's county and just to the north of the leonardtown area. right along 235 and just to the east of route 5 there. so watch out. some of the showers will continue to produce some locally heavy downpours through the rest of the evening. more storms later on this week. we'll break it down for you. plus, we'll talk about the latest on now hurricane ernesto coming up in a minute. a jind billboard in downtown d.c. is drawing criticism from vincent gray. the sign promotes guns and gun safety. the mayor says the message, offensive. tom sherwood is in the newsroom with more on that. tom? >> wendy, it's hard to miss that billboard. it's big, really big. but it's not illegal. you can see all kinds of promotions and announcements and signs of all sizes on the

streets of downtown washington. but this particular sign with the bulls eye as part of a 30 by 60 foot billboard is drawing criticism from the mayor. >> i think it's offensive. you know, we work very hard to be able to, you know, to enforce our kun control laws. it's not responsible. i think it's very irresponsible. to promote the use of guns in the city, i think really is just anti-safety. >> the connecticut-based group national shooting sports foundation obtained the $550 permit for the sign at 12th and massachusetts avenue northwest. the foundation told nbc 4 it promotes gun safety and formal training at sites aren't country. and in the washington area. the no spokeman was available for an interview. 29008 the u.s. supreme court struck down the district's ban on handgun ownership. the city has reluctantly eased the gun laws since but still

requires registration and gun safety training. passer's by on tuesday had differing views about the billboard and the legal ownership of guns. >> i think it's very important for citizens to have access to guns to protect themselves. and you should have to be trained. i do feel that. >> well, given d.c.'s history of violence, i'm not in support of guns in washington at all. >> the mayor told news 4 he doesn't like the billboard. he says it has the legal right to be there. wendy? >> all right. tom sherwood, thanks. right now a man from manassas park is behind bars without bond after using a social moeb app to meet a 15-year-old girl. they found 29-year-old michael lee tulsma and the victim after checking on the report of a suspicious vehicle at the lake ridge marina in wood bridge. investigators discovered nude photos of the victim on his phone. now tulsma faces charges to

contribute together delinquency of a minor and possession of child pornography. one man, three banks. police are looking for this han in wection with three recent bank robberies and one attempted robbery. the latest was yesterday at the capital one bank on marlboro pike in district heights. the suspect passed a note demanding money buts with unsuccessful and ran away. he's also suspected of successfully robbing the same bank back in march. the wells fargo bank in district heights in april and bb & t bank in camp springs last june. >> an undercover sting busted a local man who is trying to put a hit out on his wife. police say an resident contacted a man in leesburg several weeks ago wanting to find help to find a contract killer. he wanted someone to murder his wife. but it turns out his contract -- his contact was an undercover police officer. he was arrested on friday when he traveled to leesburg to deliver a gun and partial payment for the hit. he was one of the most

. more track & field excitement ahead in the 2012 olympic games. one of the races could be huge for a virginia native making her olympic debut. it could also be a moment of redemption for lolo jones. jones, as you recall, had a heartbreaking seventh place finish in the 100 meter hurdle final in the '08 olympic games after she clipped the second to last hurdle and it hasn't been an easy road back since. jones had spinal surgery in 2011. tonight, the 2010 world indoor champion will try to make her way back to the 100 meter final. also vying for the chance to win a medal is hampton native kelly wells. like jones, she's also had to overcome a lot of personal hurdles to get to the games including a broken arm. and a hamstring injury that kept her from qualifying for the beijing olympic games. jones and wells join fellow team

reports, it comes as a result of a community wide effort. >> the condemnation signs are still on the doors of these two homes in stafford's austin ridge subdivision and this is the still jaw dropping view from the master bedroom. but after 11 long months, there is finally a fix for the landslide that residence feared would claim their homes. this is what it looked like last september when the heavy rains from two tropical storms took their toll. at first one part of the patio was still standing. only to slip away later. >> it was -- i have to say, heartbreaking. and unbelievable. >> reporter: what happening now though is heart warming for the family. insurance doesn't cover a loss like this. the church and the community pitched in with fundraisers and collected more than $60,000. >> we had hoped, you know, that something would come out of this. >> reporter: county officials say the contributions of experts in the community also made the fix possible from the engineers
