5:18 pm
the other has to do with pit bulldogs. derrick ward is live in annapolis with more on this special legislative session. derrick? >> reporter: one of the reasons legislatures go into recess this time of year is because it's just too hot to be in places like the statehouse. but they've got air conditioning now. but they still have some hot issues to deal with. one of them, of course is gambling in prince george's county. it would expand gambling across the state and create a casino in prince georges county. sfrn that passes here in annapolis, it will ultimately be decided by the voters in november. >> please rise. >> reporter: with that, the special session of the maryland legislature got under way in annapolis. the big order of business, a sixth gaming license and expansion of existing games possibly to prince georges county. after sessions starting formalities, a dose of reality from the senate president. >> if this bill passes what you are seeing in the obama/romney ads are nothing compared to the ads you're going to be seeing in prince georges county if this
5:19 pm
bill passes because the people in west virginia do not want this bill to has pas. >> reporter: hurdles remain to getting to that place in this game. the opposition remains strong. >> because it's morally bankrupt. when you think about the fact that in prince george's county right now we've got the second highest level of foreclosures and even though the argument is that the so-called clients n s customers of the casinos will come from other states. if it's right there in your backyard, the provision is going to be too great. >> reporter: there are provisions, like a firewall and minority business participation. and, of course, there's the revenue. $40 million to $50 million for the state. for education and public safety and thousands of jobs. >> i think this sends a message that prince georges county and the state understand how you do business and it's competitive. >> reporter: kind of dog eat dog. incidentally, that was the other bill on hand. a repeal of pit bull laws that would say it's not the breed but the rearing that makes
5:20 pm
a dog bad. all that given, it promises to be an interesting special session. >> it's a daunting task, very daunting task to try to reach an agreement. we'll see what happens. >> reporter: one of the provisions of this bill would hold -- other jurisdictions where casinos currently are like anne arundel county. they'd be able to keep more of their profits if a new casino comes online and eats into those profits. not all the folks in those jurisdictions agree as we'll hear coming up at 6:00. >> derrick ward, thank you. london's wembley stadium is the site of what may be the hottest olympic ticket of the day. >> it's the medal women's soccer game between the u.s. and japan. phil rogers joins us live from london. hi, phil. >> hi, jim. gamehe just ended. victory and vindication for the u.s. soccer women.

5:22 pm
medal hopes for amputee oscar pistorius. on appeal, south africa was reinstated to the final. the kenyan team was disqualified. after nearly two hours, the open water marathon came down to a sprint. hungary's eva ristob taking the gold over haley anderson by 0.4 seconds. it's an event so gruelling the swimmers actually eat and drink while competing. this is the predator soccer shoe which is worn by u.s. team captain kristi rampone. a microchip built into the sole so it stores seven hours of data. that means she can go back to the athletes village this evening, download this to her smartphone and replay every moment of today's gold medal match. that's the latest from the olympic games. i'm phil rogers, news 4,

5:24 pm
degrees. here's the temperatures. 91 in manassas. 94 in la plata. 72348 martinsburg. why? that's where we've seen the rain. and that's where the rain is. look at these storms. just a tremendous amount of storms. we have a new flash flood warning for west virginia. also storms developing down to the south. this is right down towards madison county just to the south of culpeper. these storms here are going to continue to make their way up 81. once again, if your west of washington, watch out. another severe thunderstorm warning. this includes howard county. some big-time storms there and a lot of lightning. and more storms still forming. we're not done yet. the metro area, clear right now but that's not going to last throughout the rest of the night. right now back towards frederick county, virginia, this is frederick county, virginia, around winchester, storms forming here just to the west of martinsburg. this is right around i-81 and to the west. if you live in this area, you are most likely getting pounded
5:25 pm
by these storms. watch what happens when we widen out here. numerous thunderstorms. severe weather back just to our west here. and we've got all of this moisture making its way up. it's going to come together during the day tomorrow. i do think we'll see strong to severe storms. pretty much all day long across the area. so tomorrow is a day you want to stay tuned. here's what wr the moisture is making its way. a very stormy friday as this frontal boundary is making its way toward the area. by saturday, this front will move far enough to the east that even though we'll see a few showers, maybe a few storms early, we should begin to clear out. this should be a one day event during the day tomorrow and then hopefully by the weekend, we start to clear out here just a little bit. this evening, partly cloudy. a few storms to the west. most areas should stay dry. at least through 7:00, 8:00. we're going to be watching that very closely. tomorrow morning, i think we will run into a few storms early. some of them could be strong. maybe severe even early tomorrow. 68 to 76 degrees. as we move on through the next

5:29 pm
robert griffin iii can do when they turn on the stadium lights and he takes the game and starts his career in the nfl. of course, he's warming up behind me. he looks focused. he looks ready. and just to make it a little more interesting tonight, he's going against a stellar bills defense. in practices this week, out in ashburn, griffin was criticized for holding the ball too long while he checks off all his options. mike shanahan says that improves with time and reps but nothing will teach a rookie qb to get rid of the ball faster than taking his first punishing hit from an nfl lineman. buffalo defenders, they are licking their chops. they are definitely gunning for him tonight. griffin says he's ready to face the heat. he certainly did handle himself with poise in front of the fiery d.c. media. here's the best of his game week session with reporters. >> it's going to be fun. i mean, it's football. that's what we do. i think everybody is ready to go against somebody else. you know, that's the beauty of
5:30 pm
training camp. you come to get ready to get game ready. i think i'll be more anxious than nervous. you guys are putting more pressure on the game. even though it's a preseason game it's your first game, first travel with the team. an eye-opening experience. by no means am i looking to run a lot in the preseason or in this first preseason game. i have seized the moment, seize the day on these pair of cleats. if i don't get hit in the preseason, i'd be very okay with that. >> they showed you last year's buffalo game at all? they sacked the redskins ten times last year. >> no, they haven't shown me that tape. >> let's hope he never got a chance to see that footage because it was ugly. ten sacks at the hands of the bills' "d" last year. they are even better this year. they have super mario williams who is here and he is hungry. williams and griffin actually share an agent. and they had a little preseason trash talk. and williams told griffin, i'm
5:31 pm
coming for you. so we'll see if he gets the first guy to take a shot at him. the pressure is on to keep the pressure off of griffin. the "o" line is battered up. two starters that we know that will not be playing tonight. jamal brown and corey lichtensteiger. chris has a mild ankle sprain. we'll wait and see. griffin's own motto, no pressure, no diamonds, that's what they are counting from. >> we haven't had a really dominant quarterback. of course, robert griffin iii is going to be nervous. he's going against awesome defensive guys, mario williams and the rest of them. it's a struggle. he's going to see how much the speed is. if he does badly tonight, i won't downgrade him. it's going to be a long season. if we can just get half from this year from what cam newton
5:32 pm
did last year, we're going to be phenomenal. i live in niagara falls, new york. i live in buffalo bills country. if i can do it you all in d.c. can do it. >> that's the fan perspective. griffin's coaches and players say it's the preseason and it's not a time to proof your worth. it's a time to assess the progress. >> and stay healthy. carol maloney, we'll check back in a bit. travellers who use reagan national and dulles airports now have a new tool to help them get through security. the new technology is called video analytics. pat lawson muse has that story. >> reporter: it's a new realtime tool that won't make security lines any shorter. but will direct air passengers to the shortest, quickest security lines available here at dulles. dulles, a quick glance at one of these new video monitors will direct you to the faeft check point. >> the program started out of a
5:33 pm
desire to help passengers be able to make informed decisions as to which check point they might want to use. >> reporter: the new system uses special cameras posted in the main terminals east and west security mezzanine check points. the cameras constantly count the number of people in line and the number who have completed security screening. the wait time is then posted in realtime on these monitors. >> so what we are presenting the passenger is a snapshot at that moment. it's information that they can use to decide how they -- which security checkpoint they may want to use. >> and passengers don't have to wait to get to the airport. you can also get checkpoint wait times on your desktop or mobile device. a big help when you are rushing to catch your plane. >> sometimes you show up a little late because you get stuck in traffic. that way if you are in a hurry, you know which gate to go to. >> i know that sometimes we really want to get to our gate because we know it will be a full flight or we just don't like waiting in lines. so it's nice to know how long the wait will be because it just
