the two getting into a fight. the investigators believe a knife was used to stab the victim. a screw driver was also found. the police say while only one man went to the hospital with stab wounds it looks like both were seriously hurt. >> there is some indication that there was a blood trail that may not be the victim's. so it is possible he was injured. >> those who work in the area say the violent carjacking is cause for concern. >> real quiet area, really, for that kind of stuff. you never get violence like that here. >> but it did happen here. and the police chief is trying to reassure residents. he says they are calling up on some promising leads on the double homicide from earlier in the week. and some good leads here looking for this carjacker. they say they believe he got away in what could be a getaway car, a construction van. again, they think he was hurt so they are looking for someone that might have also been injured in this altercation. as for that victim, he is listed in stable condition over at a

6:04 pm
states that are seeing more presidential campaign advertising than anywhere else this week. colorado, ohio and iowa are also the most saturated markets. mitt romney and his outside backers are spending about $20 million on ads this week alone. that's compared to about $11 million for team obama. members of the republican convention platform committee huddled in washington tonight with virginia governor bob mcdonnell leading the group. as julie kerry is here to tell us it offers a high-profile reward and plenty of risk. >> reporter: it's just an initial get-together. the real work takes place in tampa in about ten days, shortly before the convention. governor mcdonnell sat down with news 4 to talk about how he hopes to create a document that will unify republicans while still appealing to the all-important independent voter. >> the goal is to lay out the heart and soul of the vision of the fiscal conservative and social conservative party in america.
6:05 pm
>> reporter: in short, that's governor bob mcdonnell's view of the 50-page-plus gop platform he'll hammer now the tampa with 112 committee members. but it's a task filled with challenges as mcdonnell tries to satisfy competing interests and loud voices within the party. supporters of representative ron paul, for instance, are making a controversial demand that the platform call for an audit of the federal reserve. they have threatened trouble at the convention if the idea is rejected. mcdonnell didn't close the door. we're still looking at all those ideas. you'll know in a couple of weeks. once that final document is approved in tampa. >> governor mcdonnell makes it clear his platform priorities are focused on economic issues. >> a lot of the ideas that i put forward and i'm asking to be put in there have to do with economic development, jobs and free enterprise. >> reporter: on the convention website, platform ideas are solicited around the clock. while the categories of jobs and economic growth and government
6:06 pm
reform get the most attention, others sound off about social issues. one stating, same-sex marriage isn't an option. mcdonnell says he doesn't expect any change in the party's stance in the 2012 platform. >> i think you'll see an affirmation of traditional marriage as the best circumstance in which to raise children. and i don't see any deviation from that. >> steven farnsworth says mcdonnell's challenge will be to craft a document that keeps the focus on mitt romney and doesn't provoke interest groups to create a convention scene. >> it seems the governor is politically savvy enough to figure out ways to give people what they want so that the ugliness doesn't appear before the cameras. so the party doesn't look divided. >> governor mcdonnell will arrive in tampa on august 19th with the platform draft in hand and then he expects doens if not hundreds of proposed amendments as the interest groups weigh in. after two days of debate, a final document will be produced. >> julie carey, thank you.

the hottest ticket at the olympics today might have been for the women's soccer match. it was the u.s. against japan. mark barger joins us from london with the latest. >> good evening. an electric atmosphere at wembley stadium today. the u.s. women's soccer team out to avenge their loss in the world cup final last summer to japan. they wasted no time getting down to business. >> morgan has got it. towards the back post and there's the opening goal! >> reporter: the u.s. women scored first in this match and never trailed? midfielder carly lloyd scored both u.s. goals. one in each half. >> it's all over. >> a third straight gold medal won before a sellout crowd at london's wembley stadium. >> the united states never stopping. >> reporter: the u.s. women's basketball team also has gold in its sights. they rallied in the second half to get past australia today. 86-73 to reach saturday's gold medal game. on the track, u.s. runner maneo

mitchell broke his leg during this heat in the men's 4x400-meter relay. but he still managed to finish his portion of the race helping advance the u.s. to the final. in a different heat of that same event, this collision between runners from kenya and south africa appeared to derail medal hopes for amputee oscar pistorius. >> it's just disappointing. it's a pity. >> reporter: on appeal, south africa was reinstated to the final. the kenyan team was disqualified. and after nearly two hours, the open water marathon came down to a sprint. hungary's eva ristov taking the gold over american hailey anderson by just 0.4. it's an event so gruelling the swimmers actually eat and drink while competing. and one other event that just wrapped up in the past hour nepu.s. women's water polo team won the first ever gold medal for this country.

8-5 winners over spain. maggie stephens scored five goals in that game. coming up tonight in nbc's primetime coverage, usain bolt back on the track trying to add the 200-meter gold medal to the 100-meter gold he won a few nights ago. >> thanks, mark. lots of good stuff at the olympics. but a lot of folks in washington have been waiting for this day. tonight, we finally get to see rg3 in action. he's making his preseason debut as the skins take on the buffalo bills. carol maloney is up near buffalo now at ralph wilson stadium where anticipation is building. is that fair to say, carol? >> that is so fair to say. this could be the moment that begins to change everything for the washington redskins or this could be the moment where we learn that rg3 is human. most likely, it will probably be both. rg3 may wear superman socks, fly around the football field but he's still a rookie. and the number one goal for him
6:10 pm
tonight in buffalo is that he comes out of this game healthy. 12 to 20 snaps for him. griffin in warm-ups looked focused and ready to go. earlier in the week he joked a couple of 70-yard touchdown passes and a win, well, that wouldn't be bad either. no matter how he performs, though, there's sure to be plenty of overreacting. we do know that for certain. later in sports, we are going to hear griffin on how he is handling the attention and how the coaches are going to try to make it a bit easier on their rookie tonight. we'll see in just a few minute rg3 can kick off his career on the right foot. live from ralph wilson stadium, carol maloney. back to you guys. coming up, a new battle in court in colorado. the man accused of one of the worst mass murders in u.s. history faces a judge again. not everyone is ready to gamble on a plan to bring a vegas-style casino to prince georges county. but we're getting a better idea of which maryland lawmakers are

6:12 pm
6:13 pm
i know what it's like to hire people and to make ends meet. from those experiences, i had the chance of running the olympics. the games were in real trouble. there'd been way too much spending. and in massachusetts i found a budget that was badly out of balance. our legislature was 85% democrat. and every one of the four years i was governor, we balanced the budget. i want to use those experiences to help americans have a better future. we believe in our future. we believe in ourselves.
6:14 pm
we believe the greatest days of america are ahead. i'm mitt romney and i approve this message. you're watching news 4 at 6:00. >> lawyers for a man accused of shooting up a colorado movie theater say their client is mentally ill. a thirgsatch was supposed to focus an a gag order. it also included a discussion about the suspect's mental state. >> given the nature of the charges -- >> reporter: it's been two weeks since this initial televised court appearance. cameras have been barred from proceedings now as james holmes returned to court today for a hearing to determine just how much the public may get to know about the accused killer and the
6:15 pm
ongoing investigation into the aurora movie theater massacre. lawyers representing at least 25 news organizations including nbc news are asking chief district judge william sill vester to unseal key court documents and loosen his gag order on the case. a motion filed by media attorneys says, quote, the public has an obvious and legitimate interest in knowing on a timely basis the actions being taken by the government officials, law enforcement agencies, prosecutors and judges responsible for the investigation, prosecution and trial of the defendant. but prosecutors warn releasing details of search warrants, evidence and witness interviews could jeopardize their investigation and prejudice a potential jury pool. >> the chief judge wants to make sure that this man gets a fair trial. that's clearly his goal. and what he has to decide is whether a blanket ceiling of all the affidavits and the register of actions is appropriate.
6:16 pm
>> while the struggle to survive and try to move on is much more difficult for victims and the scarred community. >> at the end of today's hearing the judge says he'll take into account all the hearings and rule at a later date. the arguments from the defense could provide insight into their long-term strategy. they referred several times to holmes' mental illness and said they need more time to understand and assess what that illness might be. jay gray, nbc news, centennial, colorado. there's a major leadership shake-up at the nati's largest breast cancer foundation. the susan g. komen for the cure foundation. the president of the group is resigning next month and the organization's founder nancy brinker is shifting roles. she's moving away from its day-to-day management to focus on fund-raising and planning. at least five other high-ranking executives have resigned in recent months. earlier this month komen was criticized for cutting off its

funding for planned parenthood for three days. it reversed that decision following a public firestorm. doug is here with a check on our weather. we've got some iffy weather out there. >> oh, big time especially west of washington and west of i-95. this will be a very stormy period for just about all of us in the next 12 to 24 hours. so get ready for it. make sure you have your umbrellas all prepared. and bring anything that can float away outside or maybe blow away outside. you might want to think about bringing those things in. always a good thing. i think we're in for some severe weather over the next couple of days. this will not be a repeat of the derecho we saw. don't worry about that. a lot of people asking is this going to be another day where thousands of people are without power? i don't think so. tomorrow we're still going to have chances for severe weather. high temperature today, 95 degrees. a low of 76. today was the 27th day of 95 degrees or higher. that is second all time the number one year that was actually just a few years ago. 28 days. and i think we could get there.

6:19 pm
folks around winchester and to the north. look at all the lightning with this storm. this one dumping a ton of rain. do not drive through any flooded roadways. we'll see that potential for some flooding over the next day as well because of the fact these storms are going to be moving in with a lot of moisture. look at all the moisture down to the south. this is the actual boundary. watch these storms fire off right here. and that line will make its way our way. this will be a widely scattered severe thunderstorm outbreak. i do not expect it however, to be like the derecho. not talking about millions of people without power. just get your plans in order. partly cloudy storms to the west. some of those will be strong tonight. temperatures 83 to 88 degrees. tomorrow morning, mostly cloudy with storms possible. we could see some severe weather in towards tomorrow morning. and overnight tonight. temperatures 68 to about 76 degrees. and then we move through the day on your friday. mostly cloudy. storms cloudy. strong toer is ve er ier i er e.

6:22 pm
there. and that is what we put together. and you have to marinade 24 hours before you can serve. that's probably the main thing. >> that's the main thing. marinade. over here we've got more food. what's over here? >> this is the rice noodles for, you can eat with that and some of the beans, vegetable and some of the fire rice. and some salads here. >> well, we are going to be tasting this in a couple of minutes. we're going to talk more about food. and i understand you are going to take me on in ping-pong. >> yes. we can do that. >> we're going to take that table way over there. that table where everybody is eating and we're going to turn it into a ping-pong table. be back in a couple of minutes. >> you know -- >> that's like a resort over there in their backyard. >> it is like a resort. and veronica, she's not coming back after that tonight. >> i wouldn't blame her if i were her.

in all those situations. you have to take the pressure off him. how do you do that? usually it's by running the ball and doing different things in the pass game. it's not asking him to do everything. you have to make some plays easier for him. when you do that you have to rely on other people. you get someone else has to make a play here and there and make it relaxed for him and you guys know he can make some plays, too. >> rg3 can only make plays if he can stay on his feet. here's the situation on the "o" line. three starters are out. jamal brown, corey lichtensteiger and chris chester. we're going to keep an eye on that. as far as the rung game, evan royster gets the start. we'll see a lot of roy as well. tim hightower is out. they are just keeping him moving slowly and keeping him out limited practice because of his acl injury. lots of expectations for everybody. most importantly, rg3. lots of questions. and we're sure to get a fuf those answers tonight. guys? >> thanks, carol.
