they celebrated an olympic gold metal three-peat. let's try and make our way down. >> we were so excited. natalie and i were at the soccer game. did you cry? >> i cried live. >> if they cry, i cry. when they got that gold medal it was amazing. as we climb down, you're going to notice we have many star athletes on board with us this morning. you may see a glimpse of the decathletes. meredith vieira as well. >> also the aforementioned women's soccer team. guess who is on the bus with us this morning. they are here in london. ladies. >> team usa. >> and we've got other athletes, including ryan lochte on the bus. he had an amazing olympic games. five medals] from london. >> we've got the women's water polo team also took home gold last night. >> gold and silver medals decathlon. congratulations, guys. ryan lochte. the whole crew here. >> athletes and medal winners. coming down from the top there. >> when you're in london you arrive in a double-decker bus even if you're an olympic medalist. we thank them for being here. we're going to talk to a lot of these folks in a couple minutes. first let's find out the latest olympic news. natalie. >> another huge night for team usa with lots of gold to go around. >> it's all over. redemption for the united states. >> a golden night for the u.s. women's soccer team with a 2-1 victory over japan.

not one but two goals from lloyd. the other star of the game, hope solo, an incredible save in the closing minutes. >> a save by hope solo. >> the win redemption after the u.s. lost to japan in the world cup last year. >> we got it back. we snatched our dream back and we're so happy right now, we're on top of the world. >> this means everything to us. it seems surreal in the moment. we're going to party and live it up and celebrate this gold medal. >> it's the third consecutive olympic gold for u.s. women's soccer. >> eaton continuing on his run. >> the golden night for the u.s. also played out in track and field in the decathlon. ashton eaton won gold.

in the jump, gold and silver. the fastest man in the world now has another olympic gold medal. jamaican sprinter usain bolt won the 200 meter thursday to become the first man to win back-to-back gold in both the 100 and 200 meter. as always bolt gave the crowd a show to celebrate his win. >> there's no words to explain how i feel. i came here to become a legend and i'm now a legend. i've shown the world i'm the best without a doubt. thank you very much. one team, no losses, gold medal. >> more celebrating in the pool with gold in women's water polo. team usa beat spain for its first olympic gold medal. maggie scored five goals. >> we turned it on. we knew it was going to be a battle. we knew they were going to keep fighting until the last breath. >> in women's boxing, the

17-year-old high school student beat russia. back on the track, an incredible run for mitchell. broke his leg in the 4 x 400 relay. you can see him limping at the finish. he thought it was just a cramp. later doctors said he had broken his left fibula. that's a guy you want on your team. well, mitchell's team ended up qualifying for tonight's final. the u.s. women's basketball team will also go for gold. they knocked off australia to advance to tomorrow's gold medal game against france. u.s. men play in the semifines later today. checking the medal count, the u.s. leads with 90 in all, 39 gold, 25 silver, 26 bronze. china has a total of 80 and russia in third with 56. matt. >> natalie, thank you very much. as you mentioned, the u.s. women's soccer team beat their arch rivals, japan last night.

they are three-peater as gold medalists in the olympic games and here they are. ladies, congratulations. how do you feel? ho hum, three in a row? what does it matter? talk about the atmosphere last night. 80,000 people in the stands, a lot of supporters for japan. when i was watching, seemed like an awful lot of american flags. somebody tell me about the atmosphere. go ahead. >> it was so electric. to have 80,000 people and feel like every one of them is down on top of you. there was a lot of japanese fans but plenty of u.s. chants going around. >> it was a little tense at the end there. can i say that? as i was sitting in a bar watching this. you guys were up 2-1 for seems like an eternity. how tense was it on the field? >> i would count down the minutes. it was good. it was exciting. >> a little hand for carli, because carli scored. [ applause ] >> all right.

when you're a little girl and playing soccer, how many times do you dream about having a game like you had last night. >> i actually did. i did in beijing. i think it's all in the mind. whatever you visually prepare comes true. >> hope, i'm watching the second, 10:00 minutes to go, 8:00 minutes to go, you made a save on a shot that was very close in that had my heart in my throat. take me through it. >> i think my heart was in my throat as well. you train so hard, you train day in and day out to make the save. you never know when you're going to have the moment, the game will ask you to make that save. toyed make it in the final game, the 82nd minute. >> let's talk about how sweet this may be because of missing beijing because of a broken foot. take me through the last seconds. >> this is a complete team win.

face seemed to say it all. did you know i've got this locked up? >> the pole vault is kind of a barometer. i was hoping things went well in the last two events. i know trey was a good competitor. i was hopeful. >> trey, you won both titles. people don't know this about ten months ago you had reconstructive surgery on your elbow. here you were throwing that javelin, doing so great. just to have that journey, does that make the silver sweeter. >> i said it before. the world title aside. this medal means more than anything because of the journey. ten months ago i was waking up from the operating room not feeling my hand, couldn't move my fingers. this was a big question mark here. it was a long journey. i don't think i've ever been happier than after that second throw. >> all had a wonderful journey. there was a moment, ashton, where you hugged your mom after the event.

time nationwide. attorney for colorado shooting suspect says he suffers from mental illness. could lay a groundwork for not guilty plea by reason of insanity. this is holmes former school, university of colorado, hired an attorney for the psychiatrist that treated him. financial firm goldman sachs won't face criminal charges following accusations it contributed to the 2008 financial meltdown. the justice department said the burden of proof could not be met, that goldman sachs bet against the subprime mortgage securities it sold to its clients. now to a near death plane crash caught on tape by the survivor. nbc's tom llamas in new york with the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the dramatic footage captured by not one but two cameras and proves just how close the survivors came to death. it was all smiles for nathan williams and three of his buddies as they took off from a dirt runway instantly, idaho.

the group had been hiking in a remote wilderness area back in june. williams and a friend both turned on their cameras with no inkling of the harrowing experience they were about to record. williams said warming temperatures made it difficult to get enough lift. their small plane started to lose altitude. after only three minutes, they crashed, slamming into trees. >> everybody okay? >> the pilot's son was one of the passengers. >> on the ground, upside down hanging from our seat belts. >> reporter: at first it wasn't clear if everyone survived in the twisted wreckage. stunned the men got out of the plane, the pilot seriously hurt with a broken jaw, fractured cheekbone and broken ribs. the men say it's a miracle nobody was killed. >> we certainly feel like we were watched over that day. >> reporter: part of this video is too graphic to show on tv but the cameras continued to roll after the survivors attended to the pilot and waited for help.

weeks after their ordeal the men agreed to post the video for friends to see, never guessing it would go viral on youtube and live leak.com where this plane crash has now been played more than 10 million times. >> the first time you see it, it's kind of surreal, full speed, seven seconds. not very much time. probably watched it a couple hundred times. it's surreal i was actually one of the people in the plane. >> reporter: amazing video. the son of the pilot said his dad is credited with getting the plane down without any loss of life and his father is expected to make a full recovery. natalie. >> all right. tom llamas in new york, thank you. now to another story of a man who is very lucky to be alive. amazing rescue on tape off the coast of australia. after his boat capsized he was left stranded and naked in shark infested waters. he struggled to stay close begging for a tv boat to rescue

him. finally they pulled him to safety as sharks moved in. it's believed he was in the water treading for 24 hours. one other fisherman was pulled from the water and died in the hospital. a third man meanwhile is still missing. incredible story there. it is 7:16. you're up to date now. let's go back over to matt, savannah and al and all of our athletes. >> thank you very much. mr. roker, we are ending with a bang weather wise. >> this is not bad. let's see what we've >> this is not bad. unfortunately, a bit of a bang as far as our weather in the northeast and mid-atlantic states. thunderstorms, heavy rain could even be some isolated tornadoes from upstate new york all the way down to charleston. as you look on the radar, you see we're getting storms firing up from charlotte, all the way up into new york, boston, back into cincinnati. rainfall amounts, some of them pretty heavy amounts. we're talking some areas back through michigan and wisconsin and on into pennsylvania. three to five inches of rain all the way down as far south as

were before we bid. >> sebastian coe was once an olympian himself, won two medals and broke records as a middle distance runner in 1980 and 1984. >> i always will consider the primary client group to be the athletes. >> do you think these ideas, the ideas of the olympic spirit and the commercial realities are in balance? >> i think they are in balance. but you're right to ask the question. there is a balance. you know, the old adage, he who pays the piper calls the tune is okay, we want to make sure they are not rewriting the symphony. >> surprisingly coe says if he could have predicted the world collapse he would have invested more in the games. >> we would have doubled our efforts. the fact 6 billion pounds worth of construction project money has gone into businesses often supporting communities that would have had precious little work during this period. this has been an economic

dividend that's bordered on a god send. >> throughout this interview you've sighed, i think mostly from exhaustion. what has made this most worth it to you? >> it's the generosity of spirit in this country. most mornings, we're all buried behind our newspapers, now we're talking to epa other. now we're exchanging stories about what it is we've seen and witnessed. we've just become nicer in the last few days. >> he also sees big life lessons in the game. >> the great thing about sports and the great thing about the olympic movement of olympic sport is it's actually a metaphor for life. it's not about patronage, charms, not about circumstance, it's about hard work. it's about diligence. it's about great coaching. it's about friendship and respect. >> diligence is something coe knows all too well. his work almost done with these olympic games, he next hosts the paralympic games. >> then you're going on

last two weeks. >> memories, one of them last night at the wimbley stadium as u.s. women won their third straight gold in soccer. it would not have happened without the work of hope solo. she had an incredible game last night. >> all right. that's one image we're going to remember. there's some other images, iconic images that are etched into our memories. for example, man walking on the moon for the first time. michael jordan gliding through the air before a dung and the famous photo of the beatles ending up on their classic album abby road. on a series of special reports, "today" in history. we're going to try to recreate those photos and find out what it was like to be there. >> first look who we've run into in these olympics. evan won gold in 2010. evan, we don't normally see winter olympians.

are you going to melt? >> i figure there's no better place than here in london to announce that i'm officially coming back to competition. >> all right. >> i'll start the season off this year in october at skate america, my first competition since vancouver. >> let's recap here. so you won gold in vancouver. we spent a lot of time with you up there. then you kind of took some -- you didn't officially retire, you just took some time off. did you miss it a lot? >> i took time away from the ice. i did. a variety of things. enjoyed all of them. but nothing satisfied me as much as training and competing. i still have the olympic bug. i think i have one more games in me. >> how has it been getting back into it and going back out on the ice practicing. you're a little older now? are you feeling it? i'm just saying. >> that's a good question, though. absolutely. i'm working with a different body. it will be four years later. i've had to be a smarter and more efficient athlete. training has been different. i've enjoyed every second of it.

so grateful to have this opportunity. >> you had all this emotion. when it got down to playing you had your game face on. one sports writer said you were kept constantly busy, which felt like an understatement to me. did it feel like an onslaught on the field? >> i don't know what it felt like. i mean, i was just so into the game. whether i touched the ball or not, i was making sure our defense was shifted two sets to the left, upside yards. i constantly felt like i was part of the game whether i touched the ball or not. you train so hard. a goalkeeper's life is incredibly difficult. you're the hero or the goat basically. you train so hard waiting for that. i probably dive 40 times every single training session. you can go into a game and never have to make a save. i made the save i needed to make, not in the last five games prior but in the final, the six games. >> last night you were definitely a hero. i think the save that came in the 83rd minute is worth an instant replay.

broken all kinds of records in london. it's called "matilda" the musical. in london there's olympic fever and there is 'n' matilda" fever. it's a musical about a little girl with magical powers is drawing audiences of all ages. it's become one of the hottest tickets on the west end. >> how excited are you? >> excited. >> excited. >> can't wait. >> adapted from "matilda" it centers around an imaginative girl whose supernatural power shield her against the cruelty of the adults in the world around her. >> it's not saccharine, not hollywood wood, not old-fashioned. it's very cruel and funny as a result. >> i sat down with three of the

welcome back to london. these olympic games have given

the world plenty to cheer about. moments of near perfection and sheer triumph. then there were some other moments that didn't quite live up to expectations. our willie geist is here to share a few of those. good morning. >> first of all, gold medal for these kicks this morning. >> thank you very much. i'm marching in the closing ceremony. >> you're right. the guy who did the back flop in the springboard probably not getting himself in the winning box but doesn't mean he shouldn't get his olympic due. >> good evening. >> reporter: we should have known the london games would be a little different when they opened with her majesty jumping out of a helicopter. with the queen, mr. bean headlining, the olympics were the biggest worldwide spectacle to hit this city since, well, last year. william, kate, and harry were just spectators this time, dressed down and turning up all over town to cheer on great

britain. the games so historic triumph. >> no one has won more. >> reporter: there were some flops, too, and some bad breaks, some major pains in the neck. >> loses his balance, the bar comes crashing down. >> and some shots below the belt. >> look at that face. >> who could forget the silver medal sneer from u.s. gymnast mckayla maroney that's gone viral, even out of this world. the 16-year-old told "today" the look wasn't about finishing second but about disappointment in her own performance. london saw two of the strangest scandals in the history of the olympic games. trying to throw their badminton matches and hiding it so poorly, four teens tossed out of the olympics. this is the first time since the

advent of human language that the word badminton and scandal have and next to each other. meanwhile an american judo fighter disqualified from the games after he tested positive for marijuana. his excuse, an unnamed family member whipped up a batch of pot brownies back home and forgot to tell him about the pot part. grandma's secret recipe, indeed. americans watched in awe as 16-year-old american ariel hsing gave the world's best a run for their money before heading home for her senior year of high school. americans also watched with sudden interest the dressage competition. rafalca would become something of a political celebrity with an owner named ann romney. mitt romney, however, didn't quite catch dressage fever. >> i'm not sure which sport the

day goes on. she will get the chance to see it. i will not be watching the event. >> even mitt romney had to be trans fixed at the london games by synchronized swimmingw a winning russian duo reminds us again what it takes to win gold on the world's biggest stage. hard work, dedication, and matching sequinned michael jackson bathing suits. looking good. we should point out, by the way, as we heard groans when the weightlifter dropped the weight on his head he walked away okay, somehow. we'll never know how. >> thank goodness. willie, good to see you. coming back, a medical student turned opera singer dazzled at the opening ceremony, but first this is "today" on nbc.

24-year-old emily has

already accomplished a lot in her life. she performed in the opening ceremony at these games. her album, our version of events" is climbing the charts. emily, good to see you. >> thank you for having me. >> that must have been an amazing experience to sing in the opening ceremony. >> it's incredible, something i'll never do in my life again. i'm glad to be involved in it. >> you have an extraordinary story. not every singer songwriter can say they spent four years in medical school. how did you get in that and how did you get into song writing. >> i love school and science. i thought a medical career is amazing. music is something i dreamed of since i was really, really young. i hope at one point in my life i can go back to medicine but for now making music and singing. >> you're quite a prodigy. you wrote your first song at 11. it wasn't about rainbows and sunshine, this is heady stuff. >> i was very serious. i wanted to be taken serious as a musician. they were fantastic songs.

going for gold. they knocked off australia to advance to the gold medal game. the u.s. men play in the semifinals later today. now to the rest of the day's top stories, the campaign trail is heating up as republican presidential hopeful mitt romney kicks off a tour dfour-day bus this as an ad questions romney's history of paying income taxes. meanwhile he could be days away from announcing his running mate. legal analysts say could lay the groundwork by not guilty by reason of insanity. hired an attorney for the psychiatrist that treated him. for the first time great white sharks swimming off cape cod have been fited with electronic tags so they can be tagged by an underwater robotic shark cam. this footage for discovery channel's shark week was shot in the same area where a swimmer

them. he was a lot of fun. i enjoyed -- as soon as we took the first frame i knew we had something. >> missy franklin here, showing how much fun she has, a hair moustache. >> missy was definitely my favorite. i hate to say i have a favorite. she came in, walked into the studio with all five medals by herself. nobody was there. really i just ran out of ideas. she was there for 15 to 20 minutes. >> ready to play. >> wonderful. >> and this gymnast holding an upside down handstand. was he holding himself up like that? how long was that? >> not that long. he did it half a dozen times. i was trying to have some fun with him. i said can you do a handstand with a medal. then i realized the medal. he said watch this. that was the result. >> this is hancock and his five-month-old daughter you've got to love. >> two things you can't miss with, puppies and kids.

part of the olympic games is the events, jenna bush-hager is here with one man's story. >> good morning, that's right. when most people hear jackie robinson, they think about the baseball player that broke racial boundaries in 1947. but a year later a different jackie robinson was playing for team usa's bbt teaasketball tea in london and he helped droo bring home gold. barcelona's team, beijing dream team and now lebron, kobe. before all of them, there were team usa in the 1948 olympic games also in london. a symbol of peace and rebuilding

after world war ii in a city destroyed by bombs. it was the first olympics since the war and the second with basketball as an event. one of the members on the team. at 85, over 60 years later, now a retired preacher, he's back. this time to a very different london. >> there was rubble everywhere. >> even this park was filled with rubble. >> there were holes with barricades around. the children had never seen a candy bar, taught them how to chew gum. >> in the summer of 1948, he sailed across the atlantic to a war ravaged city. the team dominated the game, a tight one with argentina. robinson scored one of the last baskets to clinch the wind and still has the game ball. the team beat france to win. >> when you got that gold medal.

>> i did fine. >> he even managed to meet king george vi, then pregnant prince elizabeth at buckingham palace. >> we made it to the gates of buckingham palace. >> there it is. been there and done that. >> 64 years ago. >> that's right. >> if somebody had told you 64 years ago that you'd be back looking at this place? >> it's a dream come true. >> at home in georgia, the reverend displays the medal in his office for the kids of his town to see. the medal you see here is not the one he brought home in 1948. that medal was stolen in 1964. he was told receiving a replacement wasn't possible. after some communication across the pond between rotary clubs in augusta, georgia and londonish one was located. he was surprised with it in 1968. part of this trip was to thank them in person. >> thank you. >> reporter: he now keeps the medal a bit closer to his heart when not until lock and key.

house. they even have their own polo grounds where william and harry happened to play recently. kate was waving and cheering them on, which is great. it's a grand hotel with a beautiful georgean style. i love their deep soaking tubs. you can see a view of the rolling hills and lovely vast property. what i love to do is horse back ride. you can go riding there, especially when you know you can follow up with a spa. >> put that one down. next the mag dallen chapter. how long to get here? >> three and a half hours. this is definitely worth it, some of the most beautiful countryside in england. the only county that has two coastlines, north and south. you're going to get incredibly mild climate and seafood. >> looking at those gorgeous rooms. >> a 19th century hospital they have revamped into a gorgeous hotel.

it just opened. one of the first people to stay there. a fun inside out pool, you can play indoors or out. bring the kids. >> yes. >> next over to the chewton glen in hampshire. this is a family hotel. >> this is one of the first country house estates that opened in the '60s. this has been popular. families go back year after year. they have a kids club, spa treatments which i love. they are not resting on their laurels. they have just opened these six tree houses, basically 12 suites in the sky on stilts. you get a great view of the trees. when you're done being in the trees, you can come out and explore the incredible new forest, which is a national park and gorgeous. >> kids love those tree houses. staying in hampshire if you're looking for a more affordable, smaller hotel, the pig is the place to go, the new in hotel. >> so much so we at travel and leisure named it your it list.

the pig is named proep appropriately because they love their food there. mark hicks goes everything from smoke his salmon to grow mushrooms in the forest. this is a place where you're going to have a cozy intimate feeling. a smaller hotel but we love it just as much. >> sounds fantastic. next, speaking of small hotels, langford in somerset. >> tiny property in somerset. they are known for incredible nature. once again, they have wetlands, bird watching if you're into that. this property has only six rooms and seven acres of english gardens. >> wow. >> garden, english, they do it better than everybody else. they do it well. >> got to book. tell us about the gunton arms. >> this is where hip londoners are going to unplug. this is a deft definitely a place, very popular now.

swim team after your all night pub crawls. >> it wasn't a pub crawl. we were at a party. all in good fun. no, this is one of the -- it's middle eastern, and it's street food, which has become really popular here in london. so it's super, super easy. >> it's been marinating. >> this is prime rib. it's been marinating overnight in yogurt, garlic, lemon, then we cooked it in that, boiled it. now we're going to take it out and slice it. >> you're using ribs but you could use chicken, a lot of different proteins. >> a lot of times it's more like a meat loaf but we used prime rib. i'm going to slice it up. can you shred it. >> i know how much time you love cooking, i spent time with you. you made me kale and eggs.
