there is breaking news on the political front tonight, republican presidential candidate mitt romney is ready to announce his running mate. romney will reveal his selection tomorrow morning at about 9:00 at a campaign stop in norfolk, virginia. it will be made on the naval ship uss wisconsin. among the potentials, are tim pawlenty, paul ryan, chris christie and rob portman. joining us on the phone is julie carey. why did he choose virginia as the place to make this

announcement? julie carey? apparently we do not have julie carey on the phone as we hoped. julie carey is covering mr. romney's campaign swing through virginia tomorrow. and as reported from his campaign officials at about 9:00 tomorrow morning, mr. romney will announce who his running mate will be in the presidential election this year. we'll have more coming up later in our broadcast. a d.c. superior court judge was robbed at gunpoint as she was leaving a tennis tournament in northwest d.c. now the search is underway for the men involved. erika gonzalez joins us live from the crime scene. >> this is a quiet neighborhood right on the edge of rock creek

park and this has a lot of neighbors questioning their safety tonight. does this strike you as odd? >> very. >> are this long time d.c. resident have lived in this northwest neighborhood for years without anything like this happening. >> more police patrol. you know, we don't want judges being held at gunpoint. >> reporter: police say last week the judge presiding judge in the south capital street murder case was robbed at gunpoint late at night. they were leaving the city open which is played at the fitzgerald tennis center in rock creek park. they were walking in this neighborhood when the two men with guns came up from behind them told them to turn around and give them their money. the crooks jumped in a car and took off after snatching purses, wallets, $100 in cash and a key to lexus. >> the police recovered the

wallet and the purses but no cash. this neighborhood may be familiar because a former d.c. mayor lives in this area. but as far as the crooks they are on the run tonight. erika gonzalez, news4. severe weather pounded parts of the northeastern part of the country tonight. a tornado touched down in new york's long island area. 85-mile-an-hour winds damaged homes and took out power lines. no reports of serious injuries. our area was spared from the severe weather today. doug with a look at what we might expect in the weekend. >> we saw heavy rain this morning. some areas picking up one to two inches of rain. that storm system is the one that caused that tornado in long island but it suppressed the threat for us today. we are now seeing the rain moving back in. this rain will stick around much of the night and parts of the

area. if you are out and about you have your umbrellas. we are seeing the rain around the fairfax and manassas area and in the south we are looking at storms down there. nothing severe but more storms. and i'm watching this area of rain with some thunderstorms. this is all moving our way. we could be in for a wet night and maybe a wet morning. i'll have the latest forecasts in a woman. a woman walking her dog in gaithersburg was bitten by a bat. she is recovering and talking about her encounter. shomari stone has the report. >> reporter: that woman said that bats that were flying like the ones behind me swooped down and caused anguish. >> reporter: it was instant pain. >> reporter: our camera captured the bats outside by her house. let's look in slow motion as they fly around. >> i guess it's surreal.

>> reporter: she tells me she and her husband, george, were walking their four dogs on garfield drive and looked up. what did you see? >> we saw a group of bats. >> reporter: suddenly two bats circled dina's head. >> i was nervous with the dogs. >> reporter: she stopped continued to walk. >> so many and so grefb. >> reporter: and then? >> i got hit if the back. >> feeling like someone stabbed her. >> like a sharp stabbing pain. so -- >> reporter: did you know a bat bit you? >> i did. he flew around. >> reporter: she got six rabies shots. bats are the leading cause of human rabies deaths in the u.s. >> i never expected that. >> reporter: it will take her a couple days to fully recover. >> i have a fever still and

tired. but, you know, hopefully i'll be better soon. >> we hope you feel better, dina. doctors give her three more rabies shots over the next week or so. i'm shomari stone, news4. back to the top story now, the breaking news on romney -- mitt romney getting ready to make his vp announcement tomorrow morning. nbc news is saying that he will choose paul ryan. julie carey is joining us. what do you make of this? >> reporter: it's interesting to announce a selection on a saturday morning in the midst of the olympics. but the romney campaign put out a news release saying it would announce the pick on the uss wisconsin tomorrow morning at 9:00. that led to speculation that it would be paul ryan. it is important to remember that

bob mcdonald will be with mitt romney at all of his three stops in the commonwealth tomorrow. it underscores the importance of the commonwealth in the presidential race. mitt romney is running behind president obama in virginia. this four-state bus tour that begins tomorrow is critical for the romney campaign to try to gain ground. they start in norfolk tomorrow and move up to ashland, virginia. late this afternoon, the romney campaign added a rally at randolph macon in ashland. and they come up to manassas and are having a rally at 4:10 in the afternoon alongside the train tracks there. and all the rallies and less rules were changed for that. they were show up with your press credentials and now they are requiring the media to be in

place early. so signals ahead of time something big was on the horizon. >> julie carey reporting to us. we'll have more on this in our broadcast tomorrow. now to a developing story out of california. one person is dead after a plane crashed in the middle of the neighborhood there. the victim was pulled from the cessna a few hours ago. the pilot declared an emergency shortly after takeoff from the santa mon santa monica airport. a minor crash on the runway at dulles airport. the wing of a lufthansa jet clipped the tail of another plane. all of the passengers were put on other flights. a playground in a small community in virginia has been burned by a fire. this time, the damage is much

worse than the other incident. the fire destroyed a recently installed community playground. people in the area raised thousands of dollars and spent two years to get the permits for the equipment. an historic church in virginia was destroyed by fire. it ripped through mount pleasant baptist church in gainesville, virginia today. there is extensive smoke and water damage but two bibles remained intact. there is no word on what started the fire. tonight an outpouring of support for a sikh community in wisconsin which was rocked by a deadly shooting rampage. hundreds attended a service for the victims. six people were killed last week. attorney general eric holder, and scott walker spoke at the

memorial. the members of the congregation left a bullet hole in the wall. a are doctrescue after a ma afloat for 20 hours. a big win for a local athlete in the olympics. and a surprise appearance from doug at london landmarks. dan hellie joins us after the break. an unbelievable scene in australia. a news helicopter spots a fisherman in the water. the man had been treading water forever 20 hours. the helicopter pilot tried to keep the shark away. the man was ultimately pulled to safety by a rescue boat. two other fishermen were on board when the boat sank. one of the men dies and the other is still missing. four men who survived a plane crash in idaho are revealing what it was like. they took a plane ride back in june. they had their cell phone cameras rolling. nathan said the pilot was having a difficult time getting the plane to lift because of the hot weather. they crashed into some trees. the pilot suffered serious injuries but everybody survived.

now that we have the scoop on mitt romney's vp pick, where were we? >> we were talking about the rain. it is now in portions of montgomery county west of i-95. the rest of the night this will gradually shift to the metro region and southern maryland. in the south heavier rain in culpepper. it had lightning associated with it earlier. but there are thunderstorms in

charlottesville and a disturbance coming toward our region. we will see more showers and rain overnight and maybe early tomorrow morning too. that rain will be making its way through here through the 6:00, 7:00 hour and that frontal boundary will shift to the east. the best chances of rain will stay to the south and east and that includes delmarva and the beaches. on sunday everybody dries out. rain well to the south and east. a nice day on sunday. monday looks nice as well. we'll see a couple nice days in here. and the next week is looking pretty good. tomorrow morning partly cloudy possible showers and areas of fog. temperatures between 67 and 76 degrees. the partly cloudy and possible showers to the east and east tomorrow. but a couple of showers along the i-95 corridor with the high
