paul ryan. it's official. mitt romney bring as fiscal conservative onboard and the new team makes its fir stop in the battleground state of virginia. good evening, everyone. i'm jim rosenfield. that story in a minute, but we want to begin with the weather alert. some of our viewers have seen severe thunderstorms. meteorologist chuck bell is tracking conditions in storm center 4. chuck? >> good evening, jim. yes, indeed. a severe thunderstorm warning between 5:30 and 6:00 for southern prince george's county. that expired. the strong thunderstorm remains now across parts of northern calbert and heading into anne arundel county. you see the strongest part of the cell not terrible far to the northeast of waldorf moving up to the northeast. east of brandywine and south side of annapolis, a lot of thunder and lightning. and more rain across lower southern maryland. complete check on your sunday forecast in a few minutes.

jim. thanks. our other big story. mitt romney selecting paul ryan as his running mate. the man joining romney on the republican ticket is a seven-term member of the house of representatives, serving his home state of wisconsin. ryan is chairman of the house budget committee and a member of the ways and means committee. he also wrote the gop's budget proposal. clashing with democrats over his plan to balance the budget by cutting taxes on the rich, revamping medicare and slashing entitlement programs. ryan was first elected to congress back in 1998. he's 42 years old, married with three children. romney is introducing ryan with campaign stops in virginia, crucial swing state in this election. their blue state bus tour is on a visit to manassas this evening drawing a crowd at the harris pavilion now, where news 4's julie carey joins us live. hi, julie. >> reporter: hey there. the rally wrapped up about 30 minutes ago. you can see supporters are staring behind picking up

their station in life, victim of circumstances outside of their control and only the government is here to help them cope with it. >> reporter: a few hours earlier and a few blocks away supporters of president barack obama packed into the newly opened manassas campaign office. congressman jerry connelly led a loud rally there and called the paul ryan choice a hail mary pass made by mitt romney to shore up the republican base. >> but what he stands for, the radicalism of the content of his two budgets, is, is mind-boggling and is going to deeply trouble many, many, many americans who haven't yet made up their minds about this election. >> reporter: here among romney supporters, a lot of support today for the choice of paul ryan as vice president. one woman described the moment as fireworks. we'll hear more from them coming up at news 4 at 11:00. for now, back to you, julie

a health alert to tell you about for parents. apple slices sold in mcdonald's happy meals are being recalled tonight. the company that distributes them found listeria on its equipment. mcdonald's stopped serving the apples. they were also shipped to berg u burger kings in d.c., maryland, virginia and west virginia. so far, though, no illnesses reported. >> what do you think the chances are of winning? >> about a zillion to nothing. >> well, that didn't stop this man from buying a few powerball tickets at tenley mini market today. the jackpot for tonight's drawing -- $253 million and can you still buy tickets at d.c., maryland, virginia and west virginia. winning numbers will be announced at 11:00 p.m. $253 million. still ahead, chuck's going to tell us if it will be sun or storms for sunday.

flame in london tonight. the 2012 summer olympics nearly over now. a lot of people eagerly anticipating the fanfare surrounding tomorrow night's big closing ceremony. organizers packed a lot into these 48 hours, men's and women's track, to big crowds today. today america added more hardware to its collection. also some disate appointment. nbc's phil rogers has more from london. >> reporter: jim, good evening. 32 gold medals on the line today. the olympics busiest day yet as london sprints to the finish. in olympics crazy london, the party is almost over, and the british are already feeling the pain. >> really, we've loved -- really loved watching all of the games. every single discipline there's been, we've been on it. fantastic. >> reporter: london's organizers received high marks all around for spectacular games. and today, leaders of the u.s. olympic committee said its time

to bid on bringing that experience back to the united states as early as 2024. >> you know, we think the games need come back to america and the sooner the better. >> reporter: with america leading both the overall and gold medal counts, u.s. olympic leaders are happy with the team's london record especially by the women who gained more medals than ever before. the sole exception, usa men's boxing singled out today as a stunning disappointment. no medals for the first time in olympic history. >> we have to fix that. we have to change that. >> reporter: there's little to fix with men's basketball. heavy favorites to win the gold medal against spain. >> if we win, people will say we're supposed to win. if we lose, people will make it a big deal. >> reporter: brazil a heavy favorite to finally win the only major soccer championship it's been denied, but mexico spoiled the party today. scoring twice in a 2-1 win that instead allowed mexico to celebrate its first soccer gold.

the u.s. women's basketball team blew out france this afternoon, for the u.s. women it is a fifth straight gold medal. and that's the latest from the olympic games. i'm phil rogers. news 4 reporting from london. jim? back to you. >> all right, phil. thank you. chuck's watching the storms moving through the area. what do you have, chuck? >> quite a few showers still across mainly southern maryland now. keeping a close eye on those, where the bulk of the rain has been all day long. it's been a very different place to live down in st. mary's county as opposed to right here in the city of washington where we've just seen clouds. a chance of rain showers sneaking back in. 86 here in town. mostly cloudy sky. winds averaging 9 miles per hour. making plans to get outside, most of the showers to the south of the d.c. metro area for the evening and most rain drops out of here by 9:00, 10:00, 11:00 this evening. temperatures dropping sboob the mid-70s. not everyone will get rain on their saturday night, basically

if you live along and to the east of i-95, your rain chances are noticeably high perp thunder and light ning as well. southern anne arundel county good morning northeast bound. the city of annapolis, be ready. that thunderstorm is coming in your direction. another little shower just moving into the city of washington as well. we're watching out for rain chances here. we're not alone. it was a terrible day at the beaches from new england and long island all the way down through the carolinas, georgia and north florida, rain up and down the eastern seaboard. friends and neighbors in the shenandoah valley, a spectacular day today filled with sunshine. showers stay south and east of us the next couple of hours and gradually start to come to an end by midnight tonight. most over with. our drying trend continues on into sunday, tomorrow. a much prettier day than today and the good weather extends also on into monday as well nap is welcome news after what has been a fairly rainy day for a lot of folks in southern maryland.
