i went for just a short little stint. and while i was there, sometimes you're like i wonder what event i will see and is it going to be a good one. this is what we'll show a little later. you were well represented. >> you were well represented. you were hammered, it was embarrassing. missy franklin, who is one of the swimmers, the 17-year-old, she tapped the wall and i got it on interview her afterwards and she won the gold. it was a great moment. the best moment of all was she hadn't seen her parents in i think a month, so after she swam, she tapped the wall, she won. and then we had a secret surprise for her. i had just interviewed her parents, so she was standing there and we were like look. >> aah.

the u.s. won a total of 104 in all, 46 of those gold. when you look at the numbers, i mean -- >> this is the best we've ever done. >> the first time we beat china in the overall medal count? >> i don't know that in detail, but the chinese must be very upset because we clobbered them. >> and the brits did very well, as well. >> you're so proud of everybody and happy for everyone. something so unbelievably infectious about this darling little girl just so young. >> and she went to iowa to train d she said to her mom, i really want to go and her mom was reluctant to send her and she said when she was there will, she even cried because she was home sick, but she knew she was there for a gold. what were you doing at 16? >> that's really none of your business, hoda. but the people involved have been nice about keeping it quiet.

because it was a huge undertaking. plus making sure the hours were going well. so god bless him, we missed him. i hope he'll take a little time off. >> can i say the best birthday present ever some i went with my family to the beach and the fedex guy comes knocking on the door. as they do. there was a huge box of crab cakes from baltimore. we cooked those up ten minutes on broil, they he even put the parchment paper in the box and you don't have to do thinking but cook them. >> your mother was there and your sister. >> there were other women. anyway, it was really, really great and we had fun photos from the beach. we were with the whole family. they did a cake. >> and you fought over the last crab cake. >> and then there's a picture about of all of us looking especially insane. everyone looks like we're on

>> cheers, my dear. i wonder what they're doing in london. let's read about, shall we? my one experience at the olympics was in 1988 when frank and i hosted the late night olympics from calgary alberta canada. that was the year that the jamaican bobsled team was in the contention. been there, done that. don't need to do it again. we'll be back in two weeks. it's not two weeks off from work, it's two weeks off from the same schedule so that it frees me up to work on this project that i've been working on for so many years. i started writing a musical about this woman who lived in the 1920s and 30s who fascinated me on a level i'd never had before. she was an amazing feminist before women had the vote. she was a preacher, but she was also a business woman.
