those storms. you can see what we're talking about. we're going to continue to see a chance for rain. we had rain coming through the downtown area. still seeing some shower activity in southeast. what we're seeing is the radar and the storm off to the west. areas around luray. no more severe thunderstorm warnings out there. we have stronger showers now developing around the metro area which does include right around downtown ease and also down to southeast and along the an costa river. seeing another one north of gaithersbu gaithersburg. we'll continue to see those develop. they're more back toward the west. this is where we'll see the best chance for severe weather as we move through the evening hours. some seeing heavy rain across the region. take a look, more storms into west virginia and western portions of -- eastern portions of ohio. we'll continue to watch those for you and let you know how today, today may not be the only day we talk about the chance for severe weather. >> now to a developing story vofrg the massive wildfires in

the northwest. 400 families are fleeing a fire in washington state. it already destroyed 100 buildings including 60 homes. no injuries are reported. one person is missing tonight. the fire has burned about 20,000 acres since yesterday. more than 150 fire fighters from across the state are working to contain the blaze tonight. it is an action packed day in the battleground states. president obama is in iowa with stops in oskaloosa, waterloo and cedar rapids. mitt romney is in ohio. steve handlesman is on capitol hill with the highlights. >> reporter: you know how some preseason redskins games feel a little bit like practice? well this race for the white house now is looking and feeling more like the players. they clashed over energy.

deportation program. it allows them temporary legal status if they have no legal convictions, in school, or honorably discharged from the military. it is meant to protect people from being deported if they were brought into the country illegally as children. president obama announced the initiative in june. critics say it's an unconstitutional ploy to get the latino vote. supporters are grateful. >> the administration is taking on to itself the moral authority, if you will, to decidedictator or king who gets to come or who doesn't. >> it's such a relief that we're given this opportunity. >> an estimated 1.7 million undocumented immigrants are eligible for the program. >> police hope a $50,000 reward will help them solve the murder of a restaurant owner. he was shot and killed in his own home. it happened on a basement apartment on march 1st of last

year. witnesses say two men run from the apartment and get into a four door light colored sedan. the car was last seen driving down courthouse road. he owned the subway restaurant on waffle street. the reward money comes from an anonymous donor. a man is under arrest tonight and charged with sexually assaulting a woman inside an arlington grocery store. police say 24-year-old frank bookknight touched a woman as she bent down to pick up a bottle of wine. this happened at the whole foods store on wilson boulevard about 2:00 on sunday afternoon. people who shopped there say they're shocked to hear this happened. >> i never noticed anything. yeah, i've been shopping here. i come here every week. >> no, i haven't heard anything about that. yeah. that's awful. >> i always feel safe shopping at whole foods. >> police found book knight a few hours after the incident sleeping on a bench. he had several important graphic magazines in his possession and now he is facing sexual battery

charges. >> when the storm hit our area in june, it caused widespread 911 outage problems. now we're getting more answers about what caused it. derrick ward is in our newsroom working the story and has more on the mistakes that could have been avoided. >> shortly after the storm, it was revealed that two backup generators at verizon facilities in fairfax and alexandria failed and that led to problems with the 911 service to some three million people. now tomorrow officials from some of the affected jurisdictions will meet with regional authorities and emergency management officials to shed even more light on what happened then and what needs to happen next. a report that two backup generators at verizon facilities had a failed causing 911 calls to be dropped or to not go through at a time when emergency services were more critical than ever. >> it's like having a hospital without a generator.

>> reporter: other issues have come to the fore. some of verizons procedures were not followed and there may not have been sufficient staffing to address the problems at hand. tomorrow verizon officials, those with the council of government and emergency officials from the affected jurisdictions will meet to discuss the new revelations. >> i'm pleased that verizon is responsive at this point with looking and doing a self-analysis. i that i is positive. >> reporter: steps have already been taken, repairs to the generators, fouled fuel lines and notifications that backups were not kicking in among. they but those affected the last time around say a little more in the way of preparation would go a long way to do a peace of mind during storm seasons. >> i think there should be a plan that they need to have in place for the next time this happens. it will happen again. >> reporter: but at tomorrow's meeting in alexandria, it won't be just about scrutinizing verizon. >> that's one of the issues we're looking at is what happened to our own 911 during st that time frame.

people were having a difficult time getting through. >> reporter: some officials and residents are also calling for neighborhood level planning, literally going door to door when it's safe to do so to get the word out. they want to make sure that existing systems are as robust as they can be because in an emergency, seconds are critical. back to you. firefighters had to put out a second fire today in a home this belongs to a former d.c. fire chief. the original fire started sunday night on leeho court. that fire was put out. remembers of a cleanup company went to the home this morning, they saw new flames on the second floor. investigators say the second fire may have been caused by an electrical short. the home belongs to former d.c. fire chief theodore coleman. coming up, millions of people inside syria are in desperate need of food and supplies right now. there could be a new sign that the civil war there may soon come to an end. a driver in virginia was hit and killed by a falling tree. to night, new actions being taken to prevent another straj i

. riots injured at least 16 police officers on the streets of france overnight. burned out buildings and cars are all that are left. more than 100 people took to the streets, flipped the cars and set buildings on fire. this was the second night in a row that civilians clashed with police in the town. the government there has more police in place tonight in case more violence breaks out. this has been the deadliest day of the year for afghan civilians. police say as many as 14 suicide bombers struck in the southwest

province of nimroz and a bomb on a motorcycle exploded outside a crowded market to the north. the attacks killed 46 people, several of them children. many people in the market were shopping for the weekend feast that will mark the end of the muslim holy day of ramadan. the crisis in syria is growing. the united nations estimates that two million people are now in desperate need of food and medical supplies and the former prime minister who defected to jordan says the government is on the verge of collapse. >> reporter: in his first public appearance since defecting to jordan, syria's former prime minister told the news conference that the assad regime was on the verge of collapse. he also added that the syrian government only controls about 30% of the country, a claim that is impossible to independently verify but because it comes from somebody in assad's inner circle, certainly carries more

weight. he also took the opportunity to call on other politicians and senior military officials to defect and join the revolution to topple the assad government. the u.n. estimate that's about two million people inside syria are in desperate need of assistance, medical supplies, food, and other basic necessities. they also say about 200,000 syrians have escaped to neighboring countries including turkey, lebanon and jordan and what they have described as a humanitarian crisis. nbc news, is an bull. a man is behind bars accused of breaking into the home of late apple co-founder stephen jobs. computers and personal items worth more than $60,000 were taken. the suspect, 35-year-old kareem mcfarland is charged with stealing the items and trying to sell them. police believe the break in was random, that the suspect probably didn't realize the home's connection to jobs. a fast moving storm caught some people in crumb, texas, off

guard. this home video camera shows high winds roaring through this property sunday. it tore off the roof of this two story barn. just a few miles away, the storm caused damage to homes and knocked down power lines. hundreds of residence were left without power. several fences were also wiped out by high winds estimated between 50 and 69 miles an hour. >> seems like there have been a lot of storms this season. we haven't even really started with hurricane season, right? >> no, we really haven't. becoming -- we're getting to the peake of hurricane season right now as far as what we tend to look at. that is the middle of the atlantic. nothing going on there now. that's been very, very quiet. for us, kind of quiet. few storms. but most of us remain on the dry side. take a look out there right now. we'll show you how things are as we look out on our tower camera. you can see that we're looking -- look, that's a shower right there. that shower in towards montgomery county. that is rain actually falling down from that little shower. no lightning with that that i've

seen thus far. i have been watching it. temperatures 90 degrees today. low of 72. we have .2 of an inch of rain. that is from earlier showers and storms around the area. we did see some early rain this morning. it was out of here by 7:00, 8:00. but we're still eight inches below average. we really do need to see some ravenlt we haven't seen a whole lot of it lately. 85 right now. winds out of the southeast. we're still dealing with that cloud cover at least down at the airport. here is the current temperatures. 58 in washington. 90 in fredericksburg. but here's where we've seen the rain. where is that rain right now? it looks like a lot of rain out here. i think the severe weather threat diminishing as we continue to go through the afternoon. here's what's going on now. a few showers to montgomery county. we'll show you where these are, north and west of gaithersburg.

you with see what i'm talking about. here is damascus. these are heading to the mt. airy area. watch for those. they may pulse up and then pulse back down a little heavier shower. and then lighter showers out there. that's about it. as we move to the south and east, we had a severe thunderstorm warning earlier. nothing really going on right now. we did see some wind damage back here from these storms. actually some large hail. once again, those storms just dying out as they move off to the east. still some shower activity though in portions of rapahanock county. we still have some chances. we still have t frontal boundary. that still has to move on through here. the longer we go without storms around the metro area, the better chance we have of dodging them altogether. we need that sunshine, that fuel to really get going here. you might just want to keep the umbrella handy.

tomorrow it shifts to the south and east. not completely out of our area. a good chance for strong storms there. maybe eastbound around the d.c. region we could see a few scattered strong storms. we'll continue to watch out for that as we move on through. it's all because of a frontal boundary that will move through tonight and then stall to the east. that's why we'll have a better chance of storms there. good chance of storms that way. the whole system moves out. thursday looks great with plenty of sunshine. nice warm air. lower humidity with a high temperature near 90. not all that bad. evening forecast, partly cloudy. scattered storms, some strong. downpours and wind. once again, most likely to the west and northwest. temperatures 75 to 82 degrees. tomorrow morning, partly cloudy and a pretty nice start. temperatures 7 63 to 72 degrees. tomorrow afternoon, chance of showers and storms south and east of the area. most of us should see a chance of sun and cloud mix. high temperatures, 84 to 89 degrees.

with more on the aftermath. dars. >> i >> that tragedy unfolded right here along georgetown pike. i spoke to the daughter of the man who died. she says she's hoping this tree removal project will save lives. work crews in fairfax county are taking down dozens of trees deemed dangerous. it's a move aimed at saving lives. 64-year-o 64-year-old yelled albert carl rough was killed when a decaying tree fell on his car in great falls after a severe storm. lyn simmons says she was driving along georgetown pike the day of the accident. she says she was so close to it she could see the tree falling. >> i counted my blessings because i could have been under that tree. >> reporter: the death of roth shown in this "washington post" death notice forced the vdot to take action. vdot is removing 59 trees that pose a potential danger to

drivers in the great falls area. some residents have mixed feelings about the lossst trees that provide shade and beauty to their neighborhoods, they support the project. >> this is not a mixed feeling. i think if the tree is identified as a dangerous tree, it should come down. >> some are very old. some are very large. some are very close to development. but it's time. if they're dying, if they're dead, if they're a safety hazard, then we need to take them down. it's our responsibility to do that. >> a team of fairfax county tree experts inspected numerous trees and came up with a list of 59 to be sawed down making the tree lined streets potentially safer for motorists. >> pretty good. you know, it has to save people's lives. if they're dead, they have to take care of it. >> reporter: back out live. this is what's left of one of the big tree that's was cut down here along georgetown pike. vdot officials say this work will continue over the next

three weeks at a cost of $60,000 to $80,000. darcy spencer, news 4. . presidential campaigns are in full swing. romney is campaigning in ohio. paul ryan spoke at a campaign vent in colorado. president obama is making several stops in iowa and vice president biden, he's in virginia. the gunman from that shooting rampage near texas a&m made a special request as he was dying. thomas asked his neighbor to apologize for him. that's according to a local newspaper. he shot a constable yesterday who was trying to serve an eviction notice. three other officers were also injured and a 55-year-old woman is hospitalized tonight in serious condition. he was injured during a half hour shooting with police. a tractor-trailer driver is being bramd for causing a charter bus crash near harris tonburg, virginia. it happened at 4:00 this morning on interstate 81. seven people were hurt here.

the bus driver has serious injuries but is expected to virginia state police say the truck driver hit the bus while changing lanes. the bus was on its way from tennessee to new york city at the time. a developing story right now. maryland law makers are debating whether to expand gambling in the state. last minute negotiations delayed the start of today's special session and could make for a very long night at the state house. news 4's tracy wilkins has the latest now from annapolis. this is about one thing -- it's about jobs. it's about giving the voters the opportunity to determine whether or not they want jobs in the state of maryland. >> reporter: labor unions and minority owned business owners for prince george's county came together to show support for $800 million las vegas style casino in the county. >> we're looking at thousands of good jobs. good jobs with good benefits, health care and retirement benefits.

>> the bell which will allow for table games like black jack and maryland casinos was introduced by martin o'malley. it was passed during this special session last week by the senate. supporters of the bill say now it's time for the house to turn it over to the voters. >> if you trust the voters, then vote this thing out. and if you have a good case to make, you can make it between now and november, you'll carry the day. you should not be aframed for this piece of legislation to go to the voters. >> reporter: numerous amounts were added and taken away as the bill was debated in house committee yesterday. one of the most important amendments will guarantee maryland live and an raund will county and a baltimore casino that is slated to open in 2014 will be allowed to keep tens of millions of dollars in additional revenue. the money is supposed to make up for having to compete with a possible prince george's facility. delegates representing the county say they are also looking for guarantees. >> what we're trying to do is get a bill that will appeal to the voters because the voters have to approve whatever we pass

here. it doesn't go into effect. >> reporter: labor unions and business owners that support the bill say this legislation isn't about gaming but jobs. >> it's not about whether you support the issue or not as manufacture the delegates and senate members are saying. it's about whether or not you support jobs. >> reporter: now if the house does pass this bill, there will then be two versions, one from the house and one from the senate. the senate's going to have to approve a final version. that was expected to start around 8. 306789 tonight. but because the house was delayed in beginning the session, the senate will most likely also be delayed. this could go well into the night if not into the early morning hours. in annapolis, tracy wilkins, news 4. a battle to let voters decide on montgomery county's controversial am ambulance fee is over for now. the county's volunteer fire and rescue association was fighting for a referendum on the fee. they worry the costs which will between $300 and $800 per ride would keep people from calling

911. but firefighters recently struck a deal with the county. it will give them 15% of the revenue generated by the fees. it takes effect in january. county officials say in most cases insurance companies will foot the bill. a long overdue makeover of the laurel mall is under way in maryland. it will now be called the laurel town center. there will be residential housing at cherry lane and fourth. 400,000 square feet of new restaurants, spots to entertain and up to 50 new stores and businesses. that includes a grocery chain and a movie theater. the revamped center should bring 1500 jobs to the area. the town center is expected to open in 2014. virginia students appear to be having a tough time with the state's new math tests. scores are falling across the board more than 90% of third graders passed the sol last year. this year it dropped to 64%. fifth graders went from 90% to 67%. and virginia's eighth graders

dropped from 82% to 60% passing. the sol exam is more difficult this year to help kids be better prepared for college. pass rates for english, science and history stayed about the same. one of two nuclear reactors at calvert cliffs in southern maryland is shut down tonight after a malfunction caused a drop in power generation. a control rod dropped into the r reactor core. control rods regulate the speed of the nuclear reactor. federal regulatory spokesman tells us such events are infrequent and don't pose a risk to the public. constellation doesn't know when it will be back up and running. can you expect to see arrest ndz our area on friday part of a two week national crackdown on drunk driving. we have the consequences for anyone thinking of getting behind the wheel after drinking. >> reporter: washington area

police and federal highway officials staged a drunk driving checkpoint tuesday to promote the nationwide crackdown that runs friday through labor day. 10,000 people die in drunk driving wrecks each year. 70% of them caused by someone who's blood alcohol was more than twice the legal limit of .08. montgomery county police chief thomas manger. >> if you're not driving sober, you're going to be pulled over. your chances of getting caught are greater today than they've ever been before. so we hope we send a clear message that people need to dry safely and don't drink and drive. >> and the bottom line in the best rule of thumb is if you've been drinking, do not get heroin the wheel, period. >> reporter: officials displayed device that's can detect drunk driving and block vehicles from starting. actors played the roles. >> you have ever driven drunk? >> no, sir. >> reporter: never? >> never in my life.

. the woman who helped to find and organize the march for life education and defense fund has passed away. nelly gray was found dead in her d.c. home yesterday. gray worked three decades in the department of state and labor but following the 1973 roe v. wade supreme court decision, she dedicated much of her life to the anti-abortion movement. an autopsy is being conducted to determine how gray died. nelly gray was 86 years old. the commander of the uss pittsburgh has been relieved of his duties tonight after a report that he faked his own death in an effort to end an extramarital affair. we have more on this story. >> reporter: naval commander michael ward ii has been relieved of duties as commanding officer of the uss pittsburgh

just one week after he was put in charge of the submarine because according to the day of new london, a 23-year-old virginia woman says eentthe sen oifrd faked his own death to end their affair. the woman says she met ward who is married with children through an online dating site. he claimed to be a special ops agent, separated from his wife. then she tells the day that in july she received an e-mail from someone she didn't know telling her that ward had died. she only discovered not to be true when she went to his home to pay her respects. >> i just think that's disgusting. >> it was shocking to begin with. and almost comical that somebody of that stature would try something like that. >> reporter: the navy will only say that ward was relieved of duties based on allegations of personal misconduct but those in the community near the base had much more to say. >> i mean he's supposed to be in charge and supposed to set an example. what kind of example is he

setting? >> reporter: the virginia woman also told the paper that she was pregnant with ward's child but lost the baby after being sickened by the news. >> a then anybody woman's accused of trying to poison her ex-husband, says she was never trying to kill him. 46-year-old linda orr at mitts she tainted the milk last year that her ex-husband used on his cereal. she maintains she wanted to send him a message to leave her stuff alone. the pair divorced last year after 19 years of marriage but they still lived in the same house. >> i didn't mean to hurt him. i didn't want to hurt him. but we needed to sit down and talk. >> there are more than two dozen security cameras in their house that recorded the whole ordeal. linda is now charged with felony attempted assault and is being held on a $100,000 bond. >> the formula for this season's flu vaccine has been approved.

his agent said he had a heart attack and died in his sleep at his home in palm beach, florida. he lived in new york for about 40 years before he moved to florida for the past three years he taught acting at a charter school in the arts in west palm beach. he volunteered for the job after working with students on a film. coming up on news 4 at 11:00, a local couple married for 50 years hit with a diagnosis, both are now battling breast cancer. plus, the fate of a new maryland casino could be decided tonight. and we'll find out why some virginia workers could be getting a surprise pay raise. those stories and more at 11:00. a raccoon familiar sli back together after being trapped in an arlington home. a mother set up house with her four babies in this chimney in july. humane wildlife services easily rescued the mother and two of her babies. but two other babesy got trapped after falling down into the furnace area. they hadn't nursed in four days.
