ago. we are still piecing together the violent incident that happened there earlier today. it was just before 11:00 a.m. when police say an armed man walked into the g street 801 g street northwest. he was confronted by a security there. >> the security guard was struck, right now he's receiving treatment. he's in stable condition. the security guard and others wrestled the suspect down to the ground, and he is in stody. >> reporter: law enforcement sources say the government is a local man from northern virginia. the sources also tell nbc news he was armed with a handgun and several magazines of ammunition. it's owned by the family research council, a conservative organization advocating against the pro-choice agenda, among other positions. the fbis which is also investigating, says it's too early if that motivated the

gunman. >> we don't know enough yet. >> reporter: police and federal agents quickly converged on the scene. this man caught still photos of the action right after the shooting. >> they brought a guy out on a stretcher that was bloody. i don't know if he's been shot or stabbed. i saw them put him into the ambulance, and then shortly after that, she brought out a guy in handcuffs. that's all i really know. >> reporter: why authorities, both local and federal are not yet commenting on a possible motivation, sources do tell news4 that this man also had paraphernalia, pamphlets from chick-fil-a in his backpack, as well as clips of ammunition. this group did come out strongly in support of the person who runs chick-fil-a, of their comments against smex marriage. again whether that was what drove this person to come here

remains to be determined. the suspect got to the family research council by metro. he left his car at the falls church station. >> it did not take fbi agents long to learn the suspects apparently did take metro to the scene of the shooting. a short time ago a silver dodge neon was surrounded and photographed extensively by fbi agents. they then called for a tow truck to remove the vehicle from the parking lot. sources tell news4 that four boxes that contained additional rounds of ammunition we are found inside that vehicle. fbi agency also went -- 28-year-old floyd corkens. we're told by our reporter at

square lane around 2:00 this morning. there was a struggle. the victim was shot and he died on the way to the hospital. the suspect fled the scene. police say the victim was a promoter for a local music group called total control band. late this afternoon a man was convicted in the death of his stepdaughter. prosecutors say he stabbed his stepdaughter last may. they say he was angry about divorce proceedings involving nguyen's mother. today a jury found him guilty of first degree murder. he will be sentenced in late october. alge step toward bringing another casino and gaming tables to maryland. lawmakers gave their approve today. now it's up to voters to decide the future of gambling in the

okay. pete williams has been following the developments. here's what we do know. floyd corkens of herndon. he took the metro, we're told, parked his car at the east falls church metro, then took it on into the district, and on into the family research council building at about 10:45, and set something to indicate he disagreed then when the guard challenged him. the man reached for the gun and shot the guard in the arm. that same guard managed to subdue the man with the gun, with help from other people in

the building. we're told he bought the handgun five days ago, that he had a fully loaded clip of ammunition, and two extra clips or magazines, so he came into the building with a considerable amount of firepower. we're also told in the backpack there was something to do with chick-fil chick-fil-a. we don't know if it has any significant. tone perkins, the president of family research council has recently made statements supporting the president of chick-fil-a, who says he's opposed to romney. interestingly enough, about 30 or so gale and lesbian, also decry the use of violence here, and they send their prayers to this guard, who we're told --

>> got no line. the firefighters are forced to retreat. rowan is forced to turn his back on 50 years. firefighters say between 60 and 70 homes have already been destroyed. they are hoping to have the blaze, at least 25% contained by the end of the day. now as 6:00, a security guard is hailed a hero after he's shot. >> a gunman with a backpack full of chick-fil-a materials walks into the family council headquarters pretending ton an intern. the security guard didn't buy it. >> the security guard here is a hero, as far as i'm concerned. he did his job. the person never made it farther than the front door. >> reporter: the guard was shot during the takedown, but survived. >> the security guard did a phenomenal job, and above and beyond what he was suppose to do do. good evening, jim
