the person never made it further than front door. >> the suspected gunman is in custody. >> i'm very sad. it's very surprising. it's all i can tell you. >> tonight, new details about a potential motive. >> i'm jim handly in tonight for v jim vance. >> we are learning more about what led up to a shooting. the suspect is 28-year-old floyd corkins jr. police say he made negative remarks before opening fire on a security guard. and he volunteered at a community center for lgbt people and may have targeted the business over its views on gay marriage. shomari stone is outside the suspect's home in herndon, virginia with the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: first of all, tonight, we have new information. the director for the d.c. center

for the lgbt community confirms, tells us that the suspect in this case, floyd corkins volunteered with the organization for at least six months. now the director describes him as kind, gentle and unassuming, part of the reason why folks in this neighborhood are stunned by all of this especially when they see fbi agents walking in and out of this house. the suspect is bind bars tonight. floyd corkins jr. is in jail. neighbors are stunned. ed lives across the street. >> it's surprising to hear. >> reporter: floyd walked into this building this morning carrying a handgun. he told the front desk security guard he was an intern. the guard questionedim and asked what was in his backpack and corkins pulled out the gun.

>> he opened fire on the security guard. >> the guard and ores wrestled the man to the ground and grabbed the gun. >> they put him in the ambulance. >> reporter: police found two loaded magazines with 15 rounds each in the suspect's backpack. sources say he also had chick-fil-a fliers. the fast food restaurant is surrounded in controversy. the family research council supports traditional marriage between a man and a woman. and the suspect made a negative ference about the organization's work. according to the associated press, corkins was volt teared at community center for gay, lesbian, transgendered people. >> we cannot determine his connection to the group. >> reporter: fbi agents found his car in the parking lot at the east falls church metro station. police found boxes of additional

ammunition in the car. >> it's unfortunate that people feel they need to do these type of things. >> reporter: tonight that security guard is in stable condition. he is expected to be okay. metropolitan police chief kathy lanier is calling him a hero. live in herndon, virginia, i'm shomari stone, news4. thousands of young, undocumented immigrants lined up for hours for their chance to live and work in this country without the fear of deportation. it's a scene that is playing out here and across the country. erika gonzalez has a closer look at the process. >> reporter: more than 1 million undocumented immigrants have been waiting this day. the applications are being filed. now the next question, by when could they be approved? the line outside casa del maryland formed this morning

people. police released the 911 calls today. in the background you can hear the sound of gunfire. >> the address there, ma'am -- [ indiscernible ] they are shooting. they are shooting. >> hold on, ma'am. >> another woman called from a hiding place inside the temple. her voice is barely audible as she whispers to the dispatcher. wade michael page killed himself after being shot by police. investigators believe he was a white supremacist who targeted the temple. justice for an honor student from montgomery county. david hang was convicted in the death of his 12-year-old daughter jessica nguyen. they say he was angry about divorce proceedings. he will be sentenced in late october. he could receive life in prison.

police are look for someone who killed a music promoters in his home. someone broke into the home at 2:00 this morning. yates and the gunman exchanged fire and yates was shot. he died on the way to the hospital. so far no suspects in this case. yates was a promoter for a music group called total control band. not just big money flash and glitz, maryland leaders hope expanded gambling will bring a $200 million boost to education. the governor signed the bill to allow a new casino in prince george's county. it permits table games in all the state casinos. voters will get to decide if that happens. the issue will be on the november ballot. the race for the white house took a toxic turn today. both sides lashed out over plans for medicare. without using a direct attack.

president obama used strong language to defend against lies about his plan. in ohio political analysts say that mitt romney responded to what he calls the negative tone of the obama campaign. >> they are being dishonest about my plan. >> so mr. president, take your campaign of division and anger and hate back to chicago. >> according to the congressional budget office both mr. obama and paul ryan's plans would slow medicare growth by $700 billion but would not cut benefits. more than 70 wildfires are burning tonight. 13 states are affected. here's the scene outside seattle washington. more than 70 homes destroyed and hundreds are in danger. many have been told to pack up and leave their homes. the fire is 10% contained. a similar scene in idaho and

nevada. in california hundreds of people were allowed back in their homes after progress was made against a wildfire there. dry conditions are taking a toll on crops. the u.s. department of agriculture says that a family of four will pay $615 more on groceries last year. the loss to farmers is worse. the industry is taking an $18 billion hit. 65% of the population is living in a state affected by the drought. an extra set of eyes will be watching the roads when students head back to school this month. frederick county maryland will be the first in the state to have their buses equipped with cameras to record drivers who go past them illegally. violators face a $125 fine. before this, the bus drivers had to record violators manually. a day on the water ends in tragedy. a mishap that killed a woman on

into the water. the boat was towing the woman and her husband. they found the woman face down in the water and tried to revive her with cpr. the couple was from connecticut on vacation. unbelievable injuries to a small dog and police in new york are looking for the person who threw this puppy from a moving car over the weekend. the dog suffered a broken neck. someone saw what happened and called for help and the vets are nursing the puppy back to health. he is malnourished and has dozens of bite marks around his neck. a burger king manager in fairfax county says he just did what he hopes anyone would do for him when he pulled an officer from a burning car. he drove up to an explosion and found two cars engulfed in flames. taylor ran up to what he later realized was a police cruiser

don't you worry. off to weather. hitting the lottery tonight, believe it or not as far as the weather is concerned. 86 degrees is the high temperature. 73 was the morning low. but that 86 is one degree shy of the average high of 87. today is the first day below average in 24 days. more than three weeks we have seen plenty of temperatures in the mid- to upper-90s. fortunately for us that trend seems to be over at least for now. looking a it the numbers, 78 degrees, winds out of the north at 7 miles an hour. the dew point is at 64. but temperatures are going to begin to fall. look at where they are in the 60s back to the west. 66 in winchester. 66 in frederick and gaithersburg. if you live around i-81 or areas to the west, watch out for fog

as you make your way out and about the rest of the evening tonight. on the radar picture we are seeing clear skies. no rain to talk about. but we will see shower activity. this is what we saw earlier today with the rain up there toward new york. the storms moving off the coast and behind it is clearing skies and cooler weather. after the cool down tonight we warm up with the sunshine. many areas in the upper 80s to around 90 with all that sun but with lower humidity it should be a pleasant afternoon. and friday evening we see another frontal boundary. it will be a warm and humid day. some of the storms on friday will have the potential to be strong and severe. we could see a good amount of storms here. we'll have to wait to see about friday. but tonight and tomorrow morning

you will notice a difference. low 60s back to the north and west and back down to the south and west. 70 in washington. very nice numbers when you wake up tomorrow morning. you might feel a chill in the air. mostly clear and a great start. cool in the suburbs. winds on the light side. tomorrow, mostly sunny, low humidity, 86 to 91. a great day to take lunch outdoors and a better evening tomorrow night. if you are heading to the beaches, thursday and friday look great. saturday and potentially sunday could be stormy. if you are thinking of heading to the beaches this weekend leave now and enjoy the next couple days. this weekend is looking cooler here. 82 on saturday, 82 on sunday. next week, temperatures in the 80s with sunshine. this could be the coolest trend we've seen in about two months. after the summer that we've had already i think we need it. >> a cooling trend sounds
