hard work. good evening. new developments tonight in the shooting at that family research council headquarters building in northwest d.c., the accused gunman floyd corkins was in court today. he's charged with assault with intent to kill while armed. he was ordered held without bond and assigned a public defender. prosecutors requested a mental health evaluation. meanwhile, the president of the lobbying group said his organization has received threats in the past. but nothing linked to yesterday's incident. >> we are grateful for leo johnson who acted heroically, but i also want to say i'm proud to lead a team of individuals who cross through these doors each and every day to stand for faith, family and freedom.

>> jackie bensen has more tonight. jackie? >> reporter: jim, documents presentsed in court today indicate the suspect may have been motivated by, quote, a dislike of people who he felt do not treat gale people equally. 28-year-old floyd lee corkins ii listened to the magistrate judge read the charges against him. one count of violating federal l law. according to court documents, corkins allegedly told family research council security officer leo johnson, quote, i don't like your politics. prosecutors say security cameras in the building show corkins removed a handgun and firing at the security officer who, though wounded, was able to gain control of the weapon. according to court documents,

after corkins was subdued, d.c. police officers found 50 rounds of ammunition and 15 schick fillet sandwiches. agents noted in the criminal complaint that the fast food chain had recently received national publicity. thomas peter is with the national organization for marriage, which recent i responsiblored a chick-fil-a appreciation day. >> we've seen threats on both sides. whenever there is a threat, with el immediately issue condolen s condolences. they didn't even -- in issuing a condemnation of violence. >> the family research council is a christian conservative policy organization that supports what it refers to as traditional marriage. the judge did grant the prosecution's request for a mental health evaluation, the suspect will remain behind bars until his next court appearance. reporting live at u.s. district

court, jackie bensen, news4. we're learn what leo went through yesterday. he gave a firsthand account of the confrontation to his mother, who spoke out today for the first time. that's when he pulled the gun out, then they got into an altercation. i guess that's when he shot him. he's got good spirit at all times. the president of the family research council also praised officer johnson today. he also is talking about what he blames for inciting the violence. we'll have more in our next half hour. we're following a developing story out of northwest d.c. police tell us someone stabbed a man several times in the chex. it happened around 2:30.

that helicopters came under heavy fire. nbc news has learned that two of the victims were navy s.e.a.l.s. atti abawi has more. >> their black hack hell koppetters went crashing down in a district of kandahar province. usual official say the team may have been on a special operations mission, but they couldn't confirm it. the helicopter went down because of the enemy fire or mechanical failure. >> the crash is still until investigation. i would like to offer my sincere condolences to the loved ones and families of these ten brave

soldiers and their civilian colleague. >> reporter: the taliban did claim respond for the attack. they say they shot the helicopter down and they claimed responsibility hours better they could even confirm there was a crash in kandahar. this year, 235 americans have been killed so far, and more than 2,000 americans have been killed since the star of the war. a federal appeals court says a man was wrongfully convicted for murder for hire. the decision upholds a rule, a judge haalready tossed out the conviction of justin michael wolfe. wolfe was sentenced to death after the murder of his marijuana dealer in 2001. the shooter later recanted his story. today wolfe's mother said her son has spent 11 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. it's unclear when he might be

released from prison. alcohol and speed are being blamed for a deadly accident that split a car in two. it happened around the driver was jahvid hue senni. a passenger in the backseat was killed. two others in the car are expected to be okay. prince george's county could soon have a new casino, but one community won't be voting. they are so opposed for bringing -- units the faith community does indeed have a significant am of -- >> ref vend jon than weave iris president of the group, a

what started as a small brush fire is now a major wildfire in washington state. officials started evacuating neighborhoods last night northwest of spokane.

the fire has burned more than 12 square miles. this is even tougher work than usual for firefighters. temperatures in the area are in the 90s and are expected near 100 tomorrow. now to the presidential race tonight. mitt romney took a gamble today with a disclosure about his taxes, and the white house was quick to call him on it. but first romney placed the medicare battle front and center in this race. steve handelsman reports. >> reporter: he made medicare a bigger issue with a surprise presentation in south carolina. writing on a whiteboard, "bankrupt" and "solvent". >> which of these are better? going interrupt or being solvent? obviously being solvent, and we're going to get a lot of support from people who understand that medicare should be protected. >> what were you doing? were you doing some lifting? >> reporter: romney's message to any american over 55 is --

forward and claim the prize. . protests outside the british embassy in ecuador over the fate of julian assange. today ecuador granted him asylum, but for now he remajors in the nation's embassy in london form the protests started over claims that britain may try to raid that embassy to take assange into custody. britain says that's not true, but he won't be allowed to leave the country. he's been in the embassy since june to avoid extradition. maryland's gambling expansion initiative is getting serious opposition. the challenge is coming from faith-based organizations the leaders of a coalition says the state needs to come up with a better way to generate revenue.

governor o'malley signed it yesterday. the virginia man accused of shooting a security guard at the family research council is being held without bond. according to court documents, floyd corkins may have been motivated by a, quote, dislike of people who he felt do not treat gale people equally. the security guard remains hospitalized. tonight we're hearing from officer johnson's mother and grandmother for the first time. they got a detailed account today of what led up to the shooting. that's where derrick ward is with more. >> reporter: for leo judgesen, security was a secondary duty here. his primary job description was that of building operations manager, but the secondary job put him in harm's way and the in the middle of a debate. when the news that someone at the family research council had been shot by a gunman posing as

an intern broke, a mother's intuition kicked in. >> i was trying to call him, and he was trying to call me, because he didn't want anybody else to call and tell me anything. he knew how upset i would get. >> reporter: finally crossed lines met. he assured her he was okay. >> he said he knew the man was taking too long to do what he was doing. so when he went around to see him, that's when he pulled a gun out on him. then they got interest an altercation, and i guess that's when he shot im. >> reporter: a shooting that council president tony perkins says was sparked by critics of his organization. some of those same groups have extended their outrage. in calling for an end to the reckless rhetoric that i believe

led to yesterday's incident that took place behind me. >> miles away from the rhetoric, a mother and grandmother dwell on what leo means to him. >> it looked lie he brings in a light. so he's a good hero. >> reporter: a title he's just earned in some circle, but one he's had at home all his life. >> yes, indeed, the best child in the world. perkins also mentioned some statements -- southern poverty law center shot back with a response, and used some of perkins' own statements in which he called homosexuality a crime and called for the deportation of homosexuals from the united states. mark potak, a director at the southern poverty law center, called on perkins to stop the demonizing and affirm the rights of all people. derrick ward, back to you.

a protest in front of the district's wilson building asked the city to help people who are often ignored. a small group of protesters asked for community support and recognition of transgender people. they are boy logically one is sex, but identify as the other. there have been several recent violent crimes. supporters say the demonstration is all about making the community more visible. >> well, we feel any time we can get these issues out into the public, even if people don't quite engage, but they see it, then that is one more step to bricking down stigma. >> d.c. council member jack evans came out and talked to the protester. he says d.c. could help even more. tourests helped to sign a cutout board. d.c. fire officials are investigating whether two maryland women scam local

firefighters. they were recently arrested in georgia. police tell us they posed as human resources employees. investigators believed this is how they got firefighters' personal information. police say they visited several that the organizations before they were called. students will continue to use a controversial textbook until 2014. the social studies alive textbook will be department in third grade textbooking. >> some parents pound to a passage of free health care in other countries. the superintendent says the textbook should be replaced, but it would be too expensive to do so immediately. there is growing opposition that governor mcdonnell's plan to charge a toll on i-95. this plan would build tollbooths at several locations near the

virginia/north carolina border. spots l le -- spotsylvania join others in opposition. >> it's a free ride, but governor bob mcdonnell's plans to add a toll are picking up speed. the cost $4 for cars, $12 for trucks. the roughly 40 million a year raise would be used to maintain and improve the heavily traveled road, but this week the spotsylvania's board of supervisor include ejoined seve jurisdictions opposing the plan. >> these roads have been built with gas taxes already.

the people who drive on them have paid for them, and now we're asking them to pay again for transportation improvements elsewhere that will benefit others. >> several national trucking organizations have mounted an online petition drive. secretary shawn ko notten says it's not something the governor wants to do, but something that must be done in the face of declining gas tax revenues. >> we're not seeing revenues to keep up with the needs for both maintenance and reconstruction. so we believe this is a viable mechanism for us to move forward. >> some drivers sayed toll could pay off in i-95 improvements, but others say there are better ways than a toll. >> there are other ways that the government can get money for roads. >> my bigger beef is getting from fred ricks berg to ft. belvoir. if they use the money for that,

we have new details about a stabbing in the district. police originally reported that the man was stabbed several times in the chest in northwest

d.c. they now believe that stabbing was self-inflicted and say no one is in danger. they say it happened around 2:30 this afternoon. . >> scientists say they have made a discovery that could lead to a birth control pill for men. researchers are working with a compound design, but when male mice were given the pill, they game infertile. they had the same sex drive. after they stop taking the pill, they game fertile again. still too early to try it out on humans, but doctors say it's an encouraging step. >> state health officials tell us the new case is in the d.c. area, involves a 70-year-old patient who is recovering. the first maryland case of the year was reported last month. state health officials say they are not seeing a big increase in west nile cases so far this
