plus, a warning on the rails. a disturbing discovery that has police telling women to be on the alert. and a new weapon in the fight against west file virus. good evening. the blame game continues tonight a day after that shooting inside the family research council headquarters in downtown d.c. the attack left a security guard injured. shamari stone joins us outside live of the hospital. >> reporter: well, tonight, leo johnson is in stable condition at howard university hospital. we talked to his mother and grandmother and they tell us he is a hero. >> i was trying to call him and he was trying to call me. >> virginia johnson spoke to her son, leo, after finding out someone shot a security guard in the arm at the family research council yesterday. he said, you know, the male is taking too long to do what he was doing. and so when he went around, you know, to see him, and then

that's when he pulled the gun out on him. then they got into a little alter kags and that's when he shot hichl. >> i don't like your politics. family research president says critics of his conservative christian organization sparked the shooting. some of those same groups say they're also out raged over what happened. >> but i would ask them to go a step further and to join us in calling for an end to the reckless rhetoric that i believed led to yesterday's incident. >> d.c. place say they found 50 rounds of am ewe nati ammunitio. the fast food chain recently received national publicity. the family research council also only supports marriage between a man and a woman. >> he's a good hero. >> leo johnson's mother and

grandmother are proud of him and they hope he recovers soon. >> when he come in, it looks like they're bringing light. >> reporter: now, corkins volunteered at a gay right's organization over the past five months. according to court documents, his parents said he has strong opinions over people who mistreat homosexuals. >> as the guard recover ins the hospital tonight, the shooting suspect remains behind bars. floyd corkins appeared in court this afternoon. he's been charged with violating federal law. and assault with intent to kill. corkins is being held without bond again and has been appointed a public defender. new tonight, families of virginia tech shooting victims are asking president obama and mitt romney to explain where

they stand on gun control. 67 relatives of those killed or wounded in the massacre sent each man a letter asking what they will do to for background checks. he passed two background checks to buy guns because virginia state agencies never shared his mental health records with the data base. police in laurel now face a protest because of what's seen in this video. an officer appears to punch or slap 27-year-old dante williams who was handcuffed outside the laurel station bar and grill earlier this month. tonight, the naacp held a meeting to discuss the case and several other alleged incidents at police using excessive force. >> the purpose of tonight's meeting was to gather information to support a possible case or information that we may want to turn over to

the department of justice to see if there is a pattern of police brutality here in the city of lawyer. . >> the naacp wants the police department to put the officer in question on leave. they plan to hold a demonstration at the dpt on monday. poce have not publicly commented on the case since the arrest. a warning for women tonight after a disturbing and counter on metro. right now, police are searching for a man behind an up skirting incident on rails. er erica gonzalez is live with details. >> reporter: jim, women that we talked to say the whole incident is not only weird, it's disgusting and say it could have just as easily been one of them. police say a woman called them yesterday about a man acting peculiar around her on the platform of the takoma park metro station. the victim says initially, the man approached her asking for directions.

she told police she noticed that he kept rubbing his book bag against her leg. when she looked down, she noticed the bag had a hole in it and inside was a phone. he was taking pictures of her skirt. >> that objectifies women. i'm just glad i'm covered up. >> according to police, the woman tried to snatch the bag away from the peeping tom when it ripped open. he quickly grabbed his belongings and bots. >> i think he's disrespectful. >> reporter: the woman told police she remembered running into a man a day earlier in a nearby neighborhood, again, asking for directions. tonight, the man behind the up skirting incident still on the loose. >>. >> probably just not to stand too close to guys mplt it's just creepy. >> police describe him as a black man, dark come plekted, short hair, 18-25 years of age. last seen wearing a green polo and jeans.

of the mississippi. officials sayhe dry, record heat is to blame. the national guard has been called in to help in colorado, wyoming, north carolina and california. 8,000 firefighters are battling a dozen different blazes in california. fires have burned hundreds of thousands of acres. a second case of west nile virus has been reported here in maryland. a state health official says the new case is in the d.c. metro area and involves a 70-year-old patient. the state's first case of the virus was reported last month in central maryland. health officials say one or two cases of west nile virus is typical this time of year. texas, on the other hand, is suffering from the worst outbreak of west nile in decades. now, for the first time in more than 45 years, the city and county of dallas are dropping insecticide from the air to combat the virus. ten people have died so far.

at least 200 others infected. the mayor of dallas declared a state of emergency today and supports the aerial defense. but there's widespread opposition from people who feared the kennel kals could be harmful. turning now to politics tonight, he didn't get the v.p. nod, but bob mcdonald will play a prominent role later this month. mcdonald will be one of six headline speakers. new jersey governor chris christie will give the keynote at that convention. republican presidential candidate mitt romney revealed how much he's paid in taxes today. during a campaign stop in high row, he says he's paid at least 13% in federal taxes every year for the last decade. >> you go back a look at my taxes. and over the past ten years, i never paid less than 13%.

i think the most recent year is 13.6 or something like that. i've paid taxes every single year. >> meanwhile, campaign spending on tv and radio commercials is on pace to break several records. an nbc news report tonight finds that campaigns have spent 512 million dollars total so far. that's about the same amount spent in the entire 2008 general election. tonight, we have our first look at the illinois congressman jesse jackson, jr. in the hopt as he undergoes treatment for bipolar disorder. he had an emotional meeting and shared these pictures. according to kennedy, jackson is worried about his political fu which are. but he called jackson an inspiration. jackson is up for reelection this november. just how many local people have applied for president obama's new immigration

initiative. thousands lined up out ca casa de maryland yesterday. they say the process is very complex, but they'll continue to help applicants. nationwide, the program is expected to grant over a million young immigrants temporary amnesty. a new twist in the penn state scandal. the university is still footing the bill for two ex-officials accused of of lying to the grand inju jury. turns out the school is not paying mike mcquery's legal bills. penn state says university bylaws report the officials because employees are protected against liability, including attorney fees. the school claims it is not obligated to cover mcquery.

a reason to stay out of the water or at least keep your eyes open when swimming in cape cod, massachusetts. a wildlife expert believe this is isn't just a shark, it's a great white. about 12 feet long. a fisherman recorded this video in massachusetts. it's unusual for those to make it into cape cod. just two weeks ago, a great white attacked a man surfing there. he had serious wounds to his legs but is now out of the hospital. a terrifying moment knowing their 10-year-old daughter was missing. 2000 miles away. fibi's parents paid a $99 fee to escort their daughter to o'hare airport in june. her mom called united. she says no one knew where fibi was. >> she came back and said, actually, i can't -- i can't sort it out. and i'm going off my shift. and my husband asked her if she was a mother.

and she said yes, i am. he said how would you feel if you couldn't find your daughter for 45 minutes. >> i asked several times to call my mom because i knew she would be worried. but they kept saying hang on a minute, we're busy. >> a gate agent had taken fibi to a special waiting room after the official escort didn't show up. finally, someone tracked down fibi's location. united has apologized and returned the ticket cost. ready for this? by mistake, scientists may have discovered a birth control pill for men. searchers are experimenting with a compound that was designed to block a cancer-causing gene. when they gave peal mice the pill, they were infertile. the science is still a long way off from clinical use in human beings, but doctors call it an "encouraging step." now to the mystery in michigan.

it has been 24 hours now since those winning power ball numbers were revealed. but no one has come forward to claim the prize yet. at least not yet. here's what we do know. the winning ticket was bought in a gas station at the small town of lapeer. the jackpot, a whopping 337 million dlar million, making it the third largest in history. by law, the winner has to come forward to claim the prize. after taxes, the lucky winner could take home a lump sum of $241 million. someone in our area got a nice piece of that jackpot. this 7-eleven sold a winning power baltic et worth $1 million. that winner has not come forward yet, either. $1 million tickets were sold in indiana, kansas, kentucky, new jersey, new mexico and pennsylvania. a new plaque captures a very special moment in presidential history.

fairly comfortable after a low this morning of 69. one of the coolest mornings we have seen in months around here all across the area. some of you made it into the upper 50s. today was our 47th 90 degree day for the year so far. high temperatures back into the low 6 e 90s. winds out of the west at about 7 miles per hour. the rest of the region, frederick in 60s, 68 in culpepper. still warm along the chesapeake right now. on the radar, nothing around our region. so don't expect any of those umbrellas when you step out tomorrow morning. but by the time you get home tomorrow night, you may start to need them. here's why. we've got a frontal boundary. this is a big line of thunderstorms causing a big, big damaging winds. winds gusting 70-80 miles an hour. deratio out here? you get.

that will make its way east. it will no longer be a deratio when it gets here. i think they will hit tomorrow oefbing. nothing over us right now, but, tomorrow, here comes that cold front. i think we get back into the low 90s tomorrow. and that's going to set the stage for what could be some strong thunderstorms, the heaviest of which should stay to our south in through the carolinas down through georgia. we could see some strong storms here at about 5:00, 6:00. then that front mus on through. saturday, this computer moo e model says we're dry. says we're sunny. some of the computer models that i trust the most, keeping some rain and some cloud cover in here on saturday. right now, i think saturday could have some showers. sunday right now, looking pretty good. mostly clear, a nice start, 60, 70 degrees across our area. tomorrow afternoon, sun early:
